The Black Forest was really rich with intense chocolate and cherry flavor with a sweet cream cheese icing. It's to die for. I am not a cupcake person but this place was awesome.we also had the strawberry crunch cupcake. It was very moist with lots of flavor. The cream cheese icing was packed crunch and was really good. We also had a blueberry scone which was perfect . The gentleman behind the counter made the suggestions for what to order and was right on. I contacted Star Spangled Batter when hosting a 50th garden themed birthday party for my sister. I live out of town so wasn't familiar with the local bakers. I contacted the owner Brenden and sent pictures of what we were looking for. He was incredibly helpful and the cake he made for our party was beautiful! A big big thank you to Star spangled batter in South Dakota . I was visiting for my birthday weekend but have developed a corn allergy and usually am unable to eat any outside desserts . We called ahead and asked if they could bake us a cake without any corn starch ( usually hiding in powdered sugar) or corn syrup. The team went above and beyond and even without my asking avoided using baking powder which also uses corn starch . If the owners husband doesn't have the time, energy or will to be here.. why do you make him work at your bakery? His attitude is disgusting and sad. Everytime I've come in here I say hi, how's it going? Keeping it casual and he's too good to even say hi back. Asks how many cupcakes I want and huffs and puffs when I take my time deciding. I called a pie restaurant to ask what bakery they would recommend for a perfect cake for a special event. They said, without hesitation, 'Star Spangled Batter". I phoned from Las Vegas, Nevada in February 2023 and explained to Erica what I needed. I needed a two-tiered cake with purple and gold flowers and personality for my mother's 90th birthday. I needed enough to feed 40 to 50 people. She said, "No problem. What date do you need it?" I told her I had a wedding on Saturday for a niece and the cake was for July 30th the following day for my mom. She explained that they wouldn't be open on Sunday, but to come by on Saturday and they'll have it ready for the trip from Rapid City to Custer. I called the day before to make sure everything was still as we had discussed so many months ago. She remembered my voice and told me my mom's cake would be ready for pick-up tomorrow. When we arrived, I could not have been more pleased. It had purple and gold flowers with purple little balls and cute dripping Dr. Suess-like icing. It was a magnificent masterpiece. Erica actually walked it out to the back of our car. The price was so reasonable, and when the group took their first tastes, the cake was a hit. It was THE BEST CAKE we'd ever eaten. This was a 90th birthday in a large family and it was seriously, the best cake ever in all these years of cake. I can recommend this bakery 100% to locals and to anyone searching for a bakery to service any cities within driving range. Erica is a genius. She even provided complimentary cake-pops for my bridal shower. These are the best cupcakes in rapid city! I used to like the small cakes cupcakes but ever since I've had these cupcakes the small cakes seem gross now. These cupcakes are so good they have literally ruined every other cupcake out there to me. She keeps a consistent menu everyday and switches out 2 or 3 new ones. When I placed my order I had high hopes because of the enthusiasm conveyed to me through the phone. She suggested flowers and I asked for butterflies as well. This was to be a birthday cake for my daughter's 14th birthday. We also agreed in a chocolate ganache filling. She told me the price and it was more than fair. Then I picked up the cake and was highly disappointed. No flowers or butterflies. Sprinkles thrown on as an after thought. Not even close to what I envisioned. The opportunity in question was to tell the truth about the who ACTUALLY made a cake that was in a picture they had posted on their wall. Fantastic service! My friend was planning a destination wedding at Bessler's Cadillac Ranch in conjunction with the Harley run in Sturgis last month. Star Spangled Batter was recommended by Bessler's and I am so glad they did. I called Kim 2 months before the wedding and told her I was wanting to surprise my friend with a wedding cake and she jumped in with all kinds of suggestions and ideas. I called 1 week before the date with flavors (and there is a LOT to choose from) and she went to work. My friend was SO impressed! She said the cake was beautiful and everyone was fighting for the last piece as it tasted so great. I understand that there was a small mishap with the delivery but Kim took charge, fixed everything and very few people knew anything had occurred. My only regret is that I wasn't there to taste the cake. It's always scary to order cake without tasting or viewing beforehand but you don't have to worry as Kim obviously loves her work, takes pride in her products and knows what she's doing!! Travelling all over the region on a regular basis I constantly review restaurants or eateries on Yelp and Trip Advisor, I have never thought less of an eatery than I do of Star Spangled Batter. Not only are the cupcakes subpar, the customer service is wretched and I remember a time back that the owner had to station herself across from a restaurant on the west side of town to try to debase their competition so she could try to win the title of Best Cake in the Black Hills. No other restaurant does that, they believe that their product stands alone far and above the competition no matter what a newspaper says. How pathetic that someone would have to do that and it screams that the owner even knows she cannot win fairly based on her recipe. Now after reading a few more reviews of what she does to other bakeries by trying to take credit for their cakes and then trying to openly criticize their competition I find it totally juvenile and completely unprofessional. RUN from this place if it ever comes up on your list of options. read more
