These cookies are awesome!…read more My daughter and I were waiting for our table to be ready at a nearby restaurant and saw this cookie store next door. A warm welcoming store with cookie aromas in the air! We went into this lovely little store and was greeted by a super nice young lady who was busily making cookies. She told us if we bought 6 we would get 2 free. So naturally being a cookie lover I said heck yes let's 6 and get 2 for free! We got 3 oatmeal raisin, 1 peanut butter, 1 snickerdoodle, 2 chocolate chip and 1 Oreo cookie All the cookies are loaded with chewy goodness!! Fresh and chewy..... so yummy! You gotta stop here when in Rapid City! We will be back again!

But The Cookie Shop in downtown Rapid City aims to change that perception. This locally owned, cookie-centric bakery operated under the Mary's Mountain Cookies moniker until a recent name change, but everything else about the shop has remained the same. The storefront is tucked underneath an unlabeled black awning beside the local legend Tally's Silver Spoon. Inside the single-room space, shelves of ingredients and stainless steel industrial baking equipment stretch all the way back. Christmas lights are strung from the ceiling, and the deep purple and forest green walls are minimally decorated with mountain-y tchotchkes. The blackboard counter is chalked with a Mt Rushmore-themed mural, and each cookie variety has a Sharpie-on-parchment paper description. I stopped by The Cookie Shop on a weekday morning, and I ordered right away. Across all the cookies, the dough was chewy with a dynamically rich flavor. Our far-and-away favorite was the Cookies 'N Dream -- Oreo buttercream sandwiched between two Oreo-based cookies. You wouldn't be alone in mistaking the thick, creamy frosting for ice cream, and the hockey puck size of each component felt like a sophisticated whoopee pie. But don't sleep on the more toned-down offerings. The Hopscotch (oatmeal-chocolate chip with buttscotch swirls and sugar crystals) paired solid flavors with dynamic texture, while the Americano (chocolate chip with espresso-infused dough) traded sweetness for decadence. Even the day-old leftovers far exceeded most bakeries' freshest of offerings. The service was friendly and efficient, and we were directed around the corner to the sister shop, Speed Goat Express, for coffee. The most expensive cookie varieties clocked in below the $4 mark (hence, comparable to Starbucks, Panera, or Crumbl). But the quality was god-level; it would be no exaggeration to rank The Cookie Shop's creations among the best cookies I've ever eaten, full stop.

But some of the states' best ice cream can be found around Rapid City, South Dakota. Enter The Silver Lining Creamery. This small-batch scoop shop only has locations in the Dakotas. But don't count out the rotating selection of premium, handcrafted ice cream. Silver Lining is routinely ranked among the best ice cream parlors in the state. The Rapid City location is at the far corner of the Main Street Square, adjacent to the covered downtown parking lot. Countless metal tables and chairs are organized on the outside patio, and the flavor lineup is markered onto a stainless steel menu beside a seasonal service window. A bulbed "ice cream" sign sits above the front entrance. Inside, the queue twists along the curved counter. Merch shelves and a grab-and-go freezer are pressed against the exposed brick wall to the right, while a half-booth is tucked into the corner beside the side entrance on the left. The two-tiered ceiling is accented by a baby blue lighted strip, while a deep blue "ice cream solves everything" neon sign is displayed against the back subway-tiled wall. Ambient music plays lightly in the background. My group visited on a Sunday evening in late spring, and Silver Lining still boasted a sizeable crowd. The flavor lineup ranged from standard to moderately ambitious -- namely, Silver Lining offered a perfume-y sage-flavored ice cream. After sampling multiple flavors, my partner and I opted to share a triple-scoop in a waffle cone. The cone was dwarfed by the giant scoops; our staff member treated it as a personal challenge to see how much ice cream the petite cone could possibly balance. The high butterfat content was unmistakable -- the ice cream was eyebrow-raisingly creamy but not overwhelmingly sweet. My favorite flavor was the mildly mocha-y Coffee Toffee, while my partner enjoyed the true-to-flavor Butterscotch. Our final flavor, Circus Town (birthday cake ice cream with frosted animal cracker), was no slouch, either. The service was efficient and accommodating, and a monster-sized triple scoop runs $8 -- a bargain by big-city standards. I left feeling impressed by the portion sizes and the execution. For a sophisticated yet crowd-pleasing dessert option, Silver Lining is a solid bet.
