As I get older, huge menus are becoming more intimidating because they offer a large volume of selections that you have to choose from while a server is waiting (sometimes not all that patiently). That having been said, there is enough variety on the menu here that if you can't find something you'd like, you are probably a very picky eater. One surprise and also an intimidating one was the humongous portions that are delivered when your plate arrives. I knew immediately that I would not be able to finish the meal and resolved not to try and ask for a take-out box once I ate what I could finish. My dinner (what I managed to eat was excellent) and the server had no problem providing me with a take-out box. The food kept well in my hotel's room fridge and reheated well the next day for lunch. The baked products at COLONIAL HOUSE were a feast for the eyes and I ordered a piece of strawberry shortcake to take with me back to my hotel. Mouthwatering delight! If you are visiting Rapid City and want to completely SKIP over the far too numerous chain restaurants in the area and get far better food brought to you by servers who actually seem to like their jobs and the reputation of their employer, look no further than COLONIAL HOUSE. Managers are responsible when staff are shorthanded and that is what we experienced. The Good: Our harried server was sweet and took good care of us once we were seated. Most of the food was good. The 55+ menu is a very good value. The wait for our food wasn't too long, so no knocks there. Parking was ample. The Bad: There were fruit flies bothering us throughout the meal. The green beans were cold, wrinkled, and rubbery (definitely choose a different side). We arrived after dark and it was very difficult to find the driveway into the restaurant, so some pre-dinner frustration there. The Ugly: It wasn't a packed house when we arrived, but we didn't know if the staff had been slammed prior to our arrival. What we experienced was a 12 minute wait to be seated (we were ignored until I stopped a server to ask about being seated). Our arrival coincided with a line of 8 people at the register and no cashier. About 4 people into the pay line, we noted that the cashier was being hassled by someone picking up a take-out order, thus delaying the line. At this point, we counted 3 staff - two servers and the cashier and the servers were also bussing tables. I fault management for inadequate scheduling and making their staff work their butts off that evening. I can only hope that this was a one off on their staffing, but I experienced it and hope management takes note.

Meal 2: Stopped in for pie and coffee. Slices are large! No complaints. Meal 3: We all had full breakfasts. Everything was piping hot and the portions were very generous. Meal 4: Breakfast before heading out of state. This was a nightmare, but I only have our server to blame. She first tried to seat us at a dirty table, when there were clean tables in her area. When she came to take our order, she didn't have a pen. She asked my husband what he wanted in his coffee but ignored me, which required us to call her back so I could get sweetener & creamer. Then....while we chatted with the other couple with us, we didn't realize for a long while that other people seated well after us were getting served. Just about the time we were going to ask where our food was (it had been an HOUR), she pops up and wants to give us the check! She didn't realize she hadn't served us, nor did she ever check on us during that hour, and no refills on coffee. She said she would check on our meals....five minutes later we walked out after paying for our 2 coffees and 2 orange juices because it was clear she went somewhere to hide. I made sure the guy who seemed to be the manager knew which table we were at because, while it's not his fault, this server clearly isn't cut out for the job. He apologized, but what else could he do for us....nothing. With 11 hours of driving ahead of us, we didn't want to delay getting on the road any longer.
