I kind of think the prior reviews are a bit unfair. Star Nails is a Chinese nail salon. They aren't a high end spa, and knocking them a couple stars because they don't give you a head and neck massage is just ridiculous. If you want the bells and whistles, then perhaps going to a $25 manicure place isn't your scene. Go pay $90 on Newbury St. As far as Chinese nail salons go, they are the best I've found. The pedicures last an hour, and they do a good job. The gel manicures last a full week longer than the OPI ones I get done at the mall. The place is clean and inviting. read more

After 5 years, it's time to give somewhere else a try. It's just too inconsistent. If you get Cindy or one of the 'OG's', you're golden. Other than that, it's a revolving door of technicians who couldn't care less. The tech today was rude and tried to upsell me on every last thing. I was getting a gel mani and pedi, I didn't need the $15 upcharge for the 'spa pedicure' which basically means they put more lotion on your legs. I have paid $50 every time for mani/pedi. The girl today tried to charge me $65 and got nasty when I argued it. I wanted a little me-time and to unwind, not be nickel and dimed and leave feeling peed off. No thanks. "Poor sanitation practices" I recently went to this nail salon for a manicure, pedicure and wax. Never again! Here are a few reasons why: Techncians did not wear gloves while providing pedicures Technicians did not wash their hands after each client The tools that are in an open sterile package were not cleaned before or after the customer and they were just placed back in the package to be used again The foot spas were not cleaned after each client. Water was simply just splashed around The nail buffers and emery boards were being used on customer after customer. They should be thrown away after each use. After the techicican cut my cuticle she did not throw away the nail buffer or board Poor communication with staff Techncian double dipped with the wax board. All and all I would have thought that a more prestige nail salon would have gone into this location and I am highly dissapointed or shall I say disgusted with Nail Salon & Spa. Once the health inspector makes a surprise visit to this salon I can't imagine it will be open for much longer. read more

This was my first and last time here. My pedicure took all of 10 minutes. She rubbed some lotion on my legs but it sure was not a massage. I live about 5 minutes from the Hingham Shipyard and decided to try out the nail place mostly for convenience, but I really wanted to get a Pink and White. They were beyond friendly, the place is very clean, and they're open pretty late considering the location. They accept Visa and Mastercard, not sure about Amex or Discover though. I got a full set of Pink and White for only $34 and they did finished them in record time. I'm very anal retentive about how exact the nails have to be or else I will point out every flaw. She did a wonderful job and I haven't had any chips or breaks in the 3 weeks I've had them. I'll definitely be going back to get a fill. read more

I came here with a friend for a manicure the other day. The regular manicure is $12 or $13, pedicure is $27, and shellac manicure is $25. The shellac is the only thing I would consider to be regular priced; everything else is a bit on the expensive side. The ladies there are nice, but the one who did my nails very abruptly pointed out that I "should really get (my) eyebrows waxed today." That kind of turned me off to the place. read more

Went here once to get a powder removed and they ruined my nails. My usual salon didn't have time to remove my acrylics so decide to give star a second chance and they ruined them again. She took a fake nail dug under the acrylic and took off multiple layers of my real nail and made one of them bleed. I kept telling her it hurt and to just drill them and she goes "it's easier". I was the only customer in the place but the manicure and pedicure were rushed and rough! Not spa like at all...everything was fast and sloppy. My manicure was actually painful. She pulled at my cuticles causing redness around the rims. She barely rubbed the lotion on my hands. I will not return. They are in a perfect location to do a good business but that means they need to treat the customers with care, and like they matter and make what should be a relaxing activity feel that way. read more

I figured I would try this place b/c I was looking for somewhere that could get me right in...never again!! The two stars is for cleanliness and the mani/pedi that my bf had. Mine, however, was less than positive. She cut my toe nails way too short and never even asked if I wanted them cut. She barely scrubbed my callused heels. My foot/leg massage was nothing more than rubbing lotion on and my hand/arm massage was non-existent. If all I wanted was filed, painted nails, I would save myself $40 and do it myself! I have gone here many times, but this time I left very unhappy. My pedicure and gel polish were rushed. I left with rough feet, and sloppy polish. Once my polish was done, she rushed my out of her chair and didn't even tell me to go to the dryers for my toe polish nor did she walk me over or turn the dryer on. I have gone to this place for many months, and was quite happy with my design manicures, UNTIL about a month ago, when the gel barely lasted a week. I returned as soon as I could (2 weeks after the service) and they refused to fix it for free - said that 2 weeks is normal. I don't do anything to abuse my nails - the polish had always lasted at least a month before that!! Since the polish had peeled off of five of my 10 nails it was obvious that it didn't just start peeling at two weeks, but they refused to bend and I had to pay to redo the polish (only $5 less than a full manicure)!! That was 1 1/2 weeks ago, and they started to peel again this past week (1-2 days more than a week)... but I am not going back. I will not be reprimanded again, and treated like I'm trying to get away with something - they tried to blame it on the weather, which is bull ... I think maybe they are adding thinners to the polish so that they can use them longer. I feel badly for the lower level staff, who are competent and nice - but some of the older staff are not nice, and customer service is a lost cause here! I'll find another place ... read more

Terrible experience!!! I went for the first time and I had called ahead for an apt several days earlier. When I got there no one greeted me or asked if I had an apt. No one was at the reception desk. After waiting 10 minutes I mentioned to one of the girls that I had an apt. She seemed not to understand that I had an apt and kept repeating the wrong time and then told me to go get a nail color. When I got the color and came back to the reception area she was no where to be found. So I sat down again and waited until she finally came back and then assigned a manicurist to me. The manicurist never said hello, she mumbled something about color and when I said I am sorry I could not understand you she got huffy and would not talk to me for the rest of the manicure. i went in to get a pedicure and to have acrylics taken off and a manicure. the pedicure sucked cause I was sitting in the chair with a bowl acetone on my lap and if I moved it could spill and ruin my clothes. she did a shitt job on my toes and I'm ready to go somewhere else for a color change. When she took of my acrylics she soaked them and then used the electric file on them and ended up putting holes in my nails to the point that I can barely use my hands cause it hurts soo much. My nail polish that was OPI chipped all the way off by the next day and I ended up having to repaint them myself. If you are in the quincy area or are willing to travel, mimosa nails in dorchester (right over the neposnit bridge) does a way better job for cheaper price. I will never go to Star Nails and spa again and I don't recommend that anyone goes there. read more

We arrived a half hour early and they still took us right away. Not the best mani-pedi and not the worst. Here's my gripe- They charged three dollars extra for the Orly polish used on my toes. The woman who did my mani/pedi today was pretty much a biz-nitch. I walked in, a teenage boy made me sign in and told me to pick my color. After choosing my colors a woman was yelling from the back of the salon "I'm ready!". She wasn't looking at me so I assumed that she was talking to someone else. After 5 seconds she came storming towards me yelling again that she was ready. Damn Tina, calm the F down. She did my pedicure first which was fine except that I am pretty sure that she only put one coat of polish on. I said something and she said that she put two coats on. Um, I can count. Next it was time for the manicure. Let me tell you, she was pissed that I chose a different color for my toes than my nails and even more pissed when I told her that I didn't want gel. I'm pretty sure that she was yelling at her co-workers about me, but since George Costanza's dad wasn't there, I can't be sure. The manicure looks like crap, she was very sloppy. Awful- had someone by the name of Cindy. First of all she was extremely sloppy and didn't seem to know or care what she was doing. She really nicked the cuticle on my toe and it bled the entire time. You would think that after hurting my toe she would be more diligent in her work. There was polish all over my toes and fingers that I had to tell her to clean up. The fact that she didn't think to clean her own paint job was sad. To make matters worse, I got an infection from the cut on my toe and had to visit a local podiatrist to remove the infected area. I have given this place a few chances and it is so unorganized, you walk in and you just stand there. People got so angry and annoyed it was so stressful. I walked out and they could have cared less. The customer is supposed to have the nice relaxed experience and it was far from that. No one says a word to you and they look so unhappy working there. i went there yesterday with 5 of my friends. we walked in and all the women just stared at us. finally, a woman said "can i help you?" i began to say what we needed and before i was done she said "pick color" (rude?) we waited about 20 minutes before somebody said anything to us, but we didnt mind since we hadnt had an appointment. eventually they started pointing to chairs for us to sit in (pointing. not telling us to go sit) the woman that was doing my nails was very rude and barely said one word to me. i was getting a new set of acrylics put on so she needed to take my old ones off. instead of soaking them for just a minute so it wouldnt hurt so much, she instead just yanked them off. now i dont know if its just me or not, but thats not the way your supposed to do it. my nails did not come out very well either. i had asked her if she could make them just a little shorter and she rolled her eyes at me and continued, barely making them shorter. my friends were not impressed with their nails either. When we were all done, we stood at the front desk for a few minutes before anyone came over. when the woman that did mine finally came over she took my money and walked away, without saying one word, no thank you no nothing. terrible customer service! dont waste your money! i dont know how anybody would enjoy coming here! Since moving to the area two years ago I have always gone to get pedicures here. Recently I have decided to start getting gel manicures again so last night I decided to go. I showed up a little passed 7 worried I didn't make it but the sign said open until 7:30 (same as yelp) and I was told rudely they were closed. When I told them the sign on the door said open until 7:30. I was told that was their Summer hours. Last I checked it was still winter and almost Spring so I asked why the sign said 7:30... this went back and forth a few times before the gentleman asked me what I wanted him to do about it. To which I said I would like him to adhere to the sign on the door and that I would like a gel manicure. His response were those were summer hours. He quickly talked with a woman there in their language so I didn't understand what they said. I can only assume she told him to let me stay because the next thing I know the woman is handing me a template of gel colors and telling me to choose. The woman who did my nails did a great job and was polite and that's the only reason I gave an okay score. They man was less than polite and because of him I will be taking my business else where. read more

The only reason this place gets two stars is because it is clean. However, we made appointments at 12:30 on a Saturday. We walked in and were seated to get our pedicures. My water was not even luke warm. It was cold. My sisters water was burning her. Well next thing I knew I was getting my foot massage which lasted maybe 30 seconds and was basically just the nail person lightly touching my leg, not a massage. Then when I was done and ready to dry, she lifted up the chair arm and watched me carry my jacket, purse and shoes over to the dryer and she pulled the chair out and walked away. Never spoke one word to me. My sister then got a manicure and was told she needs to get her eyebrows waxed today. Well her eyebrows were just done and they look great. Then we got charged $30 dollars for our pedicures when the price is $27 for everyone else. And it's now 1:15 and we are done. Don't waste your money! Go to Weymouth Nails and Spa. read more

I am visiting my family for the summer here and went to try this new place. I desperately needed a manicure. The woman seemed like she was in a bad mood and it was all I could do to stop myself from asking her what is wrong. Instead of explaining what she wanted me to do she roughly pushed my hands into the gel dryer or grunted at me to switch hands. It was my first time in the salon and when I was asked to wash my hands I asked where the sink was and the response I got was "over there," without pointing or showing me. I appreciated the timely manner I was helped, but the nail technician seemed so rushed and I had two divots on my nail because of the speed. Went in on Tuesday October 22nd for a gel manicure. Was in and out quickly which I usually appreciate because I was on a break from work however within 20 minutes of leaving there my gel manicure was chipping on 2 fingers. Went back in today 10/24 and asked for it to be fixed. The manicurist barely spoke to me except to ask what color it was. I showed her the color on my nails. She came back with a color that was not what I remembered. When I stated that it wasn't the same she claimed it was. When I got back out into the sunlight it was confirmed. The color she used was a shade darker and had glitter in it which the other color did not. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND!! I will never go here again. read more

I have gone here a few times and have been generally happy. But not after this past time. I got a gel manicure, a cuticle nipper tool was pulled from a drawer, used on me, then returned back to the same drawer. I expect it to be sterilized. I questioned them and they said they do sterilize when they have time between clients. The place was empty. Only 2 other clients beside myself. But that same tool was placed back with the others and not set aside. In the past they was upset. I tried to ask further about their sterilization practices and didn't get very far because of a language barrier. Go somewhere else! read more

I have visited Star Nails on two occasions this summer. The first visit was prior to the July 4th holiday so needless to say it was very busy. I wouldn't have minded but I called for an appointment and when I got there it was obvious the wait would be long. I chose not to stay and I returned the next next day and was very disappointed as I felt rushed and not relaxed at all. Later in the summer I decided to try them again. I have to say i experienced the same thing as my first visit even with a different girl. I have had many pedicures and I always feel relaxed and pleased with the service. I just moved to Hingham from Boston and was looking for a good, yet inexpensive, place to get my nails done on a regular basis. This is my spot! It's VERY CLEAN and stylish, with flat screen tv's and lots of polish choices. Moreover, I got inadvertently stranded there and needed a ride down the street and the owner, Henry, was kind enough to drive me where I needed in the middle of an icy sleet storm.
