Did they change ownership recently? I had always had a fine experience, but today I went in to get my lip waxed and I was asked if I wanted my eyebrows done too. I said only lip, but she continued to insist and before I knew it I had wax on my eyebrow. So I went with it, fine, but when she was done and I looked, not only where they too thin and uneven, but she had taken a huge chunk out of one brow. She repeatedly insisted it was like that before, but when I showed her a picture from a week early, she said "oh sorry." I will never come here again. I came here five days ago for a pedicure and the girl was ripping my toenails apart and digging into my nail bed. She used clean tools for this however used a nasty used pummus stone and brush on my nails before I could say anything. now I'm on antibiotics for an INFECTION. Disgusting. Came in for a manicure and paid for a manicure but basically got a polish change. I didn't get a any lotion on my hands/arms, my nails weren't Buffed, my cuticles were not cut even when I asked them to be and it took a total of 10 min. When I came time to paint I picked a light pink, the color went on so bubbly and Every layer of paint you could see. I asked the nail tech if she saw the bubbles, hairs, and all of the above, and that she was missing all of the edges of my nails ... she got frustrated got up and another women sat down. This new women painted another color which I was grateful for but I'm disappointed just a polish change again. No other manicure things I'm accustomed to.... Also they asked for form of payment early on, after my nails were filed and about to be soaked by the first women. That's all the was done! File and soak, then paint! They charged me $3 for gel removal (which I understand) but wasn't posted or said to me during the removal process. When I spoke to the owner he told me I was charged for a regular manicure and I should have received lotion at the least . I explained to him the situation and he told me they nail tech must have forgot .. ( she forgot her job?! ) he did ask me to come back and had my nail fixed . I said no thank you; I was hoping for at least a partial refund $16 for my nails to be ugly is a waist! I am breaking up with my nail salon after what had been a good run. Time to update my review since the first one I wrote in 2011. Since that time a number of the technicians have left. Two of them who got to know me over time shared that the work environment wasn't great so I think when people leave for other salons it's because their work environment is likely not the best. More recently a technician who has since left told me how penny-pinching the owner was. I could tell because despite the fact that OPI comes out with new nail colors all the time, there are rarely any color updates here. It's the same old, same old. One of my favorite colors is a nude OPI polish called Put It In Neutral. I was looking for it one day only to be told that someone had broken the last bottle of it and the owner didn't want to replace it. It's a very popular neutral and natural looking color. Why not replace it? For a couple of years now the magazine selection is laughable. One of life's simple pleasures for me is getting a pedicure and thumbing through magazines. It's relaxing. No more. The magazines are ancient, torn and uninteresting. The TV for a while wasn't working. I sometimes appreciated watching a show they had on mute but you could read the subtitles. Another time the TV was on a Spanish-speaking (with Spanish subtitles) station. The technician told me the owner stopped paying for cable and this was one of the only channels he could get. Because this is a large salon, I don't think the staff realizes how loud they can be. The technicians are often talking to one another quite loudly and shouting across the salon at one another. They often carry-on with one another otherwise ignoring interaction with the customer or seemingly, attention to the task at hand. This seems worse than it's been in the past and takes away entirely from the relaxation most of us look for in going for a mani/pedi. The salon cell-phone is often ringing and there doesn't ever seem to be just one person whose job it is to answer it. It can ring and ring. Often the technician doing my nails, ends up having to stop what she is doing to answer it because no one else has. Tick-tock! The staff seems in a rush now to do your nails and to get on to the next customer. There have been a number of times recently when I started with one technician only to be inexplicably handed off to the young (teenage?) son of one of the others who is learning the trade. Granted he seemed to do a fine job but for full price I didn't ask to be handed off to a trainee. The salon is still neat and clean. They use tools that are fresh for each person and people are generally polite. That's the good news. The lack of updates in nail colors, the often hurried feel I've had and on a recent occasion the less than good manicure I received have made me look elsewhere. Goodbye Star Nails! read more

Online appointments aren't real and you don't receive an email or text confirmation after making them. Some nail technicians are great and friendly, but others not so much. I would stay away from the guy with the earring because he rushes you and he's very rude for no reason. He doesn't with everyone I've noticed. I came in tonight at 5:15 to have a pedicure and gel manicure done before I leave for a trip tomorrow. The salon is supposed to close at 8:30. Pedicure first then gel manicure. I sat under the fan and heater for an additional 20 minutes after the manicure was done. The ladies wanted to close early at 6:30 so they said they wanted to wrap my feet in saran wrap and I'd be fine that it was all dry. After a 12 minute drive home this is what my nails look like. Completely ruined. I look ridiculous and now need to remove it all and have wasted $35. Will be asking for my money back when I'm home. I tried calling but no one is there (because they've left early) to fix this before I leave. The girls were nice but they shouldn't have forced me out the door if my nails weren't dry. The technicians really spent no time scrubbing or trimming our feet and nails. everything felt very rushed. there was no other customers waiting so rushing was not necessary at all. Most places set a timer to ensure that all customers are getting taken care of for the proper amount of time but not this place! 32 for a pedicure that lasts 12 minutes is not worth it at all. will absolutely not be going again. read more

Do not use this salon. I previously got ok manicure pedicure but went for acrylic nails and WHAT A DISASTER! The nails do not come off with 100% acetone and they are like slime which means this salon is using ILLEGAL MMA nails. This product can cause permanent damage to your nails. Worst manicure I've ever had. My technician seemed very nice at fist but as I critiqued she became defensive. My thumb nail is split- I asked for a silk wrap. She said they don't do that but have something better...that something better was crazy glue and acrylic powder. I won't go into how much time it took me to get her to buff that disaster down until it actually looked like a nail but good lord! Bottom line, the girl had to redo two nails, which in the end were worse. I plan on going to another nail salon tomorrow because I hate my manicure so much. One nail technician started working on my pedicure at 345 while my daughter waited for her turn. My pedicure was done in 10 minutes. I had to ask the technician to trim my nails. I was a loyal customer and recommender of Star - however they lost my business today. Last week (Wed evening), I got my nails done with my sister in law. gel mani and regular pedi for each of us. I always rave that Star's gel manis last at least 2 weeks. I left for a business trip on Monday and by Tuesday two of my nails chipped. Unusual. By Friday, three were completely polish-less. I wasn't too happy as I hate having sloppy nails at work. This is why I get manicures after all. I would have went in during the week but I was out of the country until yesterday evening. I called this morning and politely explained the situation. I was told to come down this AM and they'd re-do. When I got there, the woman recognized me and told me to sit right down. But then this is when it all went awry. The next 5-10 minutes at least 3-4 of the women were standing around me. One asked if I wanted the three nails re painted. I was clear I wanted a new coat on all. They proceeded to discuss with each other while I sat there awkwardly. I offered to share my receipt because I was getting impression they weren't either believing me or clear how short it'd been since they were first done. Finally I asked, "what is going on? I am not clear on the conclusion." A younger technician sat down and began to wrap my remaining painted nails with acetone (or whatever it is) and foil. It was dripping down my hands and arms. I asked politely for a towel, 2x. She ignored me. So I got up and got my own. Once she chipped off the remaining polish - she proceeded to redo my nails. It was just awkward. Yes, I did get them redone. But it was all handled very poorly. She didn't speak to me at the end. I decided to leave a tip because she wasn't the one who originally did my nails. I left a $10 tip which she did thank me for. I also said "thank you, I appreciate your help" to who I thought was the manager as I left - she did not respond. All in all, poor customer service. As someone who has gone there for awhile and recommended them, they handled the situation very unpleasantly. As if I was trying to get a free manicure. Um, no. This was a terrible experience and the worst suggestion I've ever made. My friend and I was in the Hingham area after going to the beach. I suggested getting our nails done after going to the beach. My friend suggested another place that she went to, but I suggested Star Nails because we were going to be at the shipyard anyways. We walked in through the back door and no one acknowledged us. It felt like they were waiting for us to greet them. Weren't we the customers?! We were finally asked, 'How can I help you?" I told one of the ladies, "I would like a pedicure and my friend would like manicure." The response was, "pick color". We both picked our color and we stood around for about 10 minutes. I don't mind waiting because I didn't make an appointment. Finally a lady looks at me and points to a chair for me to sit in. The lady who was giving me my pedicure was not talkative at all, so I never got her name. She didn't ask how I was nor communicated with me on when to shift my feet. All I got was a push and shove every time. My nails came out OK, but when it came time to dry my nails she didn't even tell me how long I had to dry them for. The dryer had no timer and it just kept going. When it came time to pay, I was going to pay with a credit card. After the lady ran my transaction, she said, 'oh, I added $0.20 extra, is that OK? please sign." She just shoves the pen in my hand and assumes that I was just going to accept it. I did accept it because that was going to be part of her tips from me. There was only customer service to those who always go there on a regular basis. New clients don't really exist in this salon. They just take you in to take your money!!! I would NEVER EVER go back there again!!!!! I WOULD NEVER recommend this place to anyone!!!! They are VERY, VERY EXPENSIVE!! I went here for a pedicure a few weeks ago and found it perfectly satisfactory. Would probably give it 3.5 stars if possible. Pros: the color options were great - a lot of OPI, the pedicurist was efficient and did a good job, the pedicurist didn't talk my ear off so I could enjoy my book, the hot stone massage was nice, my pedicure still looks nice weeks later, the facilities are all brand new and the massage chairs work. Cons: it is a little expensive at $27 for a pedicure - even with the hot stones, that's still about $5 too expensive for my taste, the hot stones were slightly too hot for me, the atmostphere itself is pretty bland - the space is very open and light, but there's nothing special about it, and it took a long time for the woman to come back out after putting me under the dryer to take my payment. Bottom line: if you just wants your nails done well, this place will get the job done. If you're looking for a "spa" experience, try somewhere else. I will be returning, since it's convenient to me. read more

I normally go to Michelle's Nails in Duxbury, where I am spoiled... no place I have ever been to beats them. You get what you pay for - fully. Would a neck and shoulder massage (standard with a manicure) be equivalent to a happy ending? Because it's amazing. My brother and I had an hour and half to kill prior to a movie; I influenced him to get a manicure, since I wanted a mani/pedi. Worst I've ever had. I didn't think the prices were too, too bad - I thought they were in the same ballpark as other places. My combo was 35, his manicure was 15. I was highly disappointed with the lack of attention to details with the mani/pedi. They were done simultaneously, rushing, thus they cut my cuticles too deep to the point where I was bleeding on three toes and one finger (thankfully, it was my middle!). No bueño! My brother said it was amazing and he can't wait to do it again on his fall break from college. I'm taking him to Michelle's. read more

My parents just moved into some condos in the shipyard so my mom of course had to scout out where her new nail place was gonna be. Star nails is just around the corner so she tried it out a few times, had a great experience, and so treated me to a mani on my first visit to Hingham. I was pretty impressed with the mani I got, and I'm pretty particular. They did a great job shaping my nails and cuticles. I keep my nails really short, and I have to say this is probably the first place in years where the manicurist didn't comment (usually with disdain) about how short they were, just got right into task. They also did a really good job of getting a smooth line of polish up to the cuticle and covering the whole nail. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like I've been to far too many places where the ladies don't even cover the whole nail on the side and it bothers me SO much. They also have the shellac/gel polish option. So this place is great and I will definitely be back! Maybe I will try a pedi too! read more

I popped in here today for a pedicure and I was pretty happy with it! The massage chair is comfy, the service is brisk and mostly friendly, and the salon is nice. It's pretty loud in the salon and they don't allow tipping on credit cards, which I understand to a point, but with the new pricing on debit cards, I feel like this is something they should start offering - I had to go get cash after my pedicure as I didn't know up front that they didn't accept CC tips. (PS, I work in the credit card industry, so I would gladly tip extra to compensate for the fees if they did it on CC; alternately, install an ATM and earn money off of our fees, ladies!) The pedicure was pretty good. I feel like the nails on my big toes, which I explained have a tendency toward growing into my skin, were cut too short. The rest of my nails were cut just right and the hot stone massage and exfoliating scrub were a nice touch. The nail polish used was great, but I did end up with a few spots on my toes that were obviously a mistake that was made when polishing my nails. Had I had more time, I would've asked them to fix it, but it was easily done when I got home. I felt the price was pretty good, although I typically go to a spa for my pedicures. My co-worker that works across the street said she felt the price ($27) was more than she typically paid in the city for a nail salon. read more

Not sure yet regarding rating but can understand from reviews with low marks sign in can be a farce! Just as some others described signed in and others taken ahead of them. There were 2 ahead of me and 3 behind all walk-ins like me but the last person a male taken before 4 other people. Ummm very interesting. Have been to many places on South Shore and Boston and sign in means just that...everyone is taken in order. Rating for sign in is a F!!! Already a wait of 23 minutes with 2 people jumping ahead!! Now let's see how long it takes and the finished product. Obviously cash since an ATM machine is at front desk. Not likely I will be back again when there are so many excellent Nail Salons in Hingham and Weymouth down the street!!! The reason for my negative rating is that some of the employees are not following the Covid regulations. While the manicurists wear their masks while working on a customer, when I walked in, two of the manicurists, who were not attending customers, were sitting and talking without wearing masks. I have been going here for years. I have never had a bad experience. They are professional, personable, friendly, and most importantly, great at what they do! I hate hearing people complain about how their prices went up SLIGHTLY due to covid. But you have to understand, they are a business trying to make it during a pandemic. I compromised getting this gel mani for the cheaper price than mini luxe and I paid for it. I warned the technician about my hangnail and not to touch it. She did anyway and I bled like crazy. I loved the color I chose but it's very bumpy and almost transparent. Given the other reviews it doesn't sound like an isolated occurrence. I'll pay the $20 dollars at mini luxe next time. read more

I have been coming to this salon for a while now. I usually get my nails and eyebrows done. Once in a while I will get a pedicure. I went there with my friend over the weekend for a pedicure, and wish I got the lady's name but she doesn't know how to listen to her clients. I told her I already cut my toe nails and not to, I look down and she's cutting them. I spoke up and she didn't say anything. Then I told her the other girls usually use the small design brush to paint my baby toe since the nail is small. She again didn't listen. I've never had a pedicure that hurt until this one. She started talking in her language to the lady working next to her and looked up at me. I will never go back and I plan on going in to complain cuz now my toe is all red and sore where I told her not to cut it!!! Ugh...I don't see the point in making an appointment here. My best friend got married last weekend (YAYY!!!) and she apparently comes here all the time for her manicures and has really good service since they know her. So she decided that the bridal party should get their nails done here...I was cool with it. She made an appointment for about 10 of us, and put down a 50$ deposit for it..which is cool, I understand. We showed up 10 minutes early to our appointment, and guess what, I waited over 45 minutes to be seated, about about 15 minutes for the lady to attend to my nails...seriously? We waited patiently while walk-ins..well walked in AND got taken care of before us. That was just terrible. There was no point in us making appointments and putting down a deposit. It was absolutely horrible. As far as my nails are concernsed they did a relatively ok job. The things I was unhappy with? Well...my nails are really healthy. Like so unbelievably healthy that people don't believe that they are real. I always have them filed nice and squarish and rarely use nail polish. When I sat down to get my nails done, I told her to keep the length and the shape and that I would prefer her to not cut the cuticles. My cuticles dont show, I am fine with them being pushed back...but dont cut them..they grow out and are annoying to take care of. Wo what did she do? curved my nails and filed them down so that they were level with my finger...not a huge deal. but my nails are a reasonable length...just a little bit past the finger. Other than that my mani pedi went well. They gave us all 5$ off because we were with Kaitlin and gave her a gift certificate to come in again for free since she brought in business..that was really sweet. But then again, I called and was told $50 with shellac and then when I got teh $5 off, it was $65 with a $10 tip....what? Well...her poor mother - in law! she sat down in the chair next to me and told the lady "I have joint problems in my big toe, *pointed to toe*, please be careful with it. Don't tug it..it will hurt! The woman rinsed off our feet and patted them dry. All was good...then I see her tugging at our toes to massage them and then she yanks the big toe! Oh my!!! That poor woman gasped and was in so much pain I could see it in her face. She reminded the woman again who didn't even apologize and just laughed at her! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! Then we got frenchmanicures on our toes and hands. The Mother in Law said that she wanted more white on her nails, the lady just kept on taking more white off, she said more white, thicker, like hers *points to my nails* she ended up leaving with barely any white on her toe nails. Disasterous. I understand not everyone speaks and understand english that well. That is half my chinese family...but seriously, if you are going to put someone like that on the floor who has to listen to a person's needs, then at the very least, have someone near her paying attention to what is being said and translating. read more

I kind of think the prior reviews are a bit unfair. Star Nails is a Chinese nail salon. They aren't a high end spa, and knocking them a couple stars because they don't give you a head and neck massage is just ridiculous. If you want the bells and whistles, then perhaps going to a $25 manicure place isn't your scene. Go pay $90 on Newbury St. As far as Chinese nail salons go, they are the best I've found. The pedicures last an hour, and they do a good job. The gel manicures last a full week longer than the OPI ones I get done at the mall. The place is clean and inviting. read more
