Prices are higher than what you'd find at the Market Basket in nearby Waltham The store has some really standout departments, such as the produce section, where one doesn't feel hemmed in by bins or shelves, and the fish counter, where the haddock and cod are always fresh. I also have to include the deli, which has better quality items than any other supermarket around and the floral section which rivals the quality of what one finds at the West Roxbury Shaw's. Selection of grocery items is adequate, if not a little small, and it's ok for baked goods. Quite noteworthy is the speed at which this Shaw's operates. I have always enjoyed very fast service every time I've been here, whether it's checking out, making an order or asking a question of the staff. It's a pretty good value, and a good shopping experience. read more

Received a bouquet of roses today (sent to me for Mother's Day) that were less than fresh. See photo. I called the store and was told that everything that went out today was offered. I offered to send a picture, which was declined. No apology was offered. In fact Florist hung up on me. Cannot recommend their floral service unless you can purchase in person. read more

Yes, it is old and could definitely use a makeover (which applies to many of the Star/Shaw's locations, but the ladies restroom here is awful!) but there are a couple of good things: self-checkout that actually works without needing to constantly have an employee come to swipe their magic ID (I'm talking to you, Stop & Shop), good pre-made salads with Boar's Head meat for when you are in a hurry and a good selection of Bisousweet Cookies (in the bakery department, TRY THEM... and they are made in Mass). Compared to the ancient Star Market in Newtonville (the one over the Mass Pike), this location is amazing. Exiting onto Comm Ave is a pain if you are attempting a left-hand turn (which will then back up the parking lot), your best bet is take a right and then left onto the carriage lane of Comm Ave and go that way. read more

They definitely need to work on cart management here. I spotted quite a few loose and many of the cart corrals were beyond full. Inside the store, the produce section was very spacious. A large area but the displays were quite far apart making for not a whole lot of product available. As it's corn season, there was a bit of a mess of corn stalks needing sweeping up. Grocery looked good and well stocked in most areas. Deli, fine. Butchery, fine. The sushi counter was well maintained and the sushi looked fresh. read more

Our family calls the Auburndale Star Market, "the Bodega". Not as a pejorative, but rather, we use it as an over-sized convenience store where you pick up things you missed in your weekly grocery shopping elsewhere, or an ingredient you need sooner than the weekly run. (Though there is occasionally a whiff of over-ripe something when coming in the front door.) What I did like is that for a time, they employed a number of challenged individuals, all very nice and helpful- and a positive way to give them opportunities. Props for that, though I have not seen them in recent years. The staff is middling- the high-school age kids at the checkouts are, well, high school kids, so I do not mark them down for cross-aisle banter. Usually very nice, some a bit awkward but hey, so were most of us. All good. (Small tip: Eggs go on TOP of the canned goods. I like scrambled but not that soon. Thank you.) The self-checkout does not offer an employee discount if you use it. I get why they exist but also do not need to be scolded by an early AI Bot, that electronic ex-spouse that resides in each. The staffer policing it could be put to better use at a staffed checkout or bagging groceries. The service desk is the worst. Rarely attended when you need them and a bit impatient telling you which aisle has what I need (after looking my self, playing "getting warmer/getting colder" for longer than is healthy. More often downright rude and dismissive. I ask little of them and by golly they meet that expectation. The glass-front cases in the frozen foods aisle (ice cream is a food group) are uniformly covered in frost and condensation inside. I suspect the overall store humidity is not controlled that well and may be cut back to save energy. But the condition requires customers to open the doors to see what they have, which lets in more humidity, frosts-over the product and creates a vicious cycle. It is not so much a store problem but is a feature at this point. This store had past glory and the brand as Star Market was our go-to growing up. Sure, it changed hands (Stars to Shaw's and back again, now under Albertson's I understand.) It is too bad, this could be so much more. The prices are higher than they need to be and the staffing is lower than it should be, current conditions accepted. The shelf-prices are often enough lower than the register price so one must stay on your toes. Issue is that when going there, we tend to be in a hurry, a quick stop, so any price adjustment needs a manager. If I cannot find one, but staff can, what does that say? We now shop for weekly groceries at MB in Waltham, where the staff is appropriately accessible, everyone is super-nice, starting kids of working age, recent and established immigrants get a good start and the prices are quite reasonable. The contrast to Star is why we switched for our weekly grocery run. I know supermarkets are a thin-margin business based on volume, but somehow MB pulls it off well. read more

The star market in Auburndale is my first grocery shopping destination. I can find items easily. I like the store. But there is one very bad thing that happened to me several times. That is they overcharged me. I am a member and use the "for U" items that are discounted. But several times they charged me at the regular prices. on several items resulting in as much as $26 more than I should have paid one time. The least overcharge was about $5 another time. The customer service department people acted as if I was begging for elms when I show them their brochure and my receipt and asked them to adjust the amount. Now when I shop there I worry about being overcharged. read more

This star market grocery store does not keep produce items up to date. I purchased two garden salads without looking at the expiry date. While checking out, didn't bother to get my receipt. When I got back home, I realized that the salads were expired by more than two days. I came back to return them within an hour. The store customer service personnel said no receipt no returns. I was surprised with this behavior. I was expecting that the store would be ashamed to keep expired food and would remedy the situation. Rather, they were willing to let customers go out the door unhappy for something that's worth 5 dollars or less. The kids who work at counters are amazing and kind hearted and hard working. But store management should understand that customer service is what will keep this stores doors open in the long term. read more

Once a great market, but poor management and spoiled employees destroyed it. Worse, the parent company turned a blind eye to the travesty it became. Children loading bags like they were playing basketball, loading heavy items on top of fragile ones. I purchased Nestle infant cereals from the star market but forgot to check the expiry date. Before opening it, I found that the expiry date was just 4 days away. I returned it at the store but I suggest the store management/merchandising team should keep close check on the shelf specially if it is infant food. Moreover, Nestle should also implement digital tracking system for Baby food so that they can track the products and collaborate with the trade partners and remove near expiries from shelf in time. read more

I'm continually disappointed by the produce in this store. I'd estimate about 20% of the fresh produce I buy here, is rotten within 24 hours of purchase. Which really means it was rotten in the store. I had to return a bell pepper last week -- and normally I just toss stuff that gets rotten but I was pissed, I had bought the thing not 30 minutes before cutting it to start cooking. Just an hour ago I bit into a white peach and it was rotten. I bought it and another peach 2 days ago and they were a little bit hard, so after 2 days they should be ready to eat. Not rotten. Their prices are too high. When they have a sale the discounts are generally good, but normally I ONLY stop here because it's on my way home from work and if I need milk and eggs, this is it. But I'm buying my produce from somewhere else from now on. Anywhere else is better. read more

I love my local Shaw's. When I moved to Auburndale I was worried I would miss my old supermarket. This Shaw's is fantastic, though, and I'm so happy it's close by. I've never had a problem with fresh produce. It's not as fresh as at Whole Foods, but it's definitely a step up from Trader Joe's where I often have problems with freshness. The staff here are friendly and helpful. The store is immaculate and well-organized. Plus, ya gotta love the weekly ice cream sales. read more

This is by far the worst Shaw's I have ever shopped at! First, the produce is horrendous. When you can't even find a decent onion, you know something is wrong. Forget anything more delicate like berries or even tomatoes. The produce department alone warrants my poor rating, but there is more... Second, the selection is really poor. Granted, this is a fairly small Shaw's compared to the ones in other areas, but still. Finally, the parking lot is a disaster and the staff is not very helpful. They remodeled this store. And it seems like every decision was made to make customers want to shop elsewhere. The produce section is small and anemic. Literally two heads of celery today. Understaffed deli that seems to unabashedly push Boarshead. Seafood and deli share the same case. The exit doors open wide six feet from the cash registers so cold air blasts in on the poor cashier's. Pathetic grocery variety compared to Stop & Shop and Market Basket. Recently my family was staying at the nearby Newton Marriott and we came to this grocery store a few times to pick up snacks and one dinner (once, when a freaky strong rainstorm with lightning and thunder struck and we didn't want to drive out for dinner). We actually liked this store! It had lovely pastries and cakes and desserts in the bakery area, gorgeous flowers in the florist area, and lots of fresh choices and ready-made meals for us, for our dinner: there was a fantastic salad bar with a lot of options there (we all got custom salads from this bar), good sushi (not great, but good, and fresh. We got a few types), and lots of choices of dishes in the deli area (we didn't have a microwave in our hotel, so we couldn't get anything that required heating). We did get something not offered in our stores in Seattle: a dense wedge of fig bread. Well, we thought it was bread, but it's really just compressed figs in a wedge shape. It's located by the fig spread (which we do have here, and is delicious with cheeses. We've had the spread/jam often). But this fig wedge was absolutely fantastic. I wish we had it here... There were other food and drink items at this store that we don't carry here in Seattle. The kids and I were amazed at the great MA-based items. Lots of great stuff here! Prices here seemed quite reasonable (compared to our Seattle grocery prices, anyhow. I suppose it's all relative). The folks at the check-out counters were all business, on the few occasions we were here. No warm fuzzies here; minimal eye contact and minimal conversation. The first check out lady didn't even say hi or bye to us. For this reason, and because the store closes at 10pm (we're used to grocery stores staying open much later, or even 24/7), I'm taking off points. read more

When you purchase berries turn them upside down to be sure they are not bruised and moldy. This happens a lot. Also, many time the avocadoes are on sale and they are pretty close to being rotten. .This is the Star Market on Lexington St I in Waltham. I would also suggest they put the refridgerator temp down a few degrees so milk doesn't spoil so frequently. (have heard this from many people). Just because they changed the produce department around doesn't mean the quality is any better. There is no excuse, they are not cheap so if I pay for something I want it to be fresh. read more

Congratulations, Star Market. You get to be my first review as Yelp Elite. I visited this place to pick up some snacks and water while staying at the nearby Marriott hotel. It's the only store within walking distance, and I wasn't expecting much from the other ratings. But I found this place pleasant enough, and they had a good selection of things I needed. Prices were not bad. The sandwich I bought was about what you'd expect from a supermarket. Other users have complained about the service being poor. I did notice that while checking out, which was awkward as the cashier didn't bother saying a single word or making eye contact. However, I usually don't demand any service at the supermarket. I show up, find everything myself, pay, and leave - I'd use a self-checkout if they had it here (which they really should - either train your staff to be helpful or make sure customers don't need them). But if you need something from the deli or bakery, I can understand the frustration with poor service. read more

I've shopped here for 30 years. Just spent 1/2 an hour browsing the limp vegetables, and out of date milk products to discover in horror a LIVE mouse in a bag of fresh rolls in the bakery department. I'd gone back to get the rolls when I ended up choosing ground meat to make dinner...The bag moved in my hand and I dropped it to the floor. I was horrified. Looking up, I saw two employees (a middle aged man and a young one) and motioned for them to come over. The older man (whom I am assuming was a manager) came up to me mimicking my motion...When I told him what I'd found, he did not apologize, nor offer to help me, but did state that he would find someone to "take care of that". Despite the fact that this store is a stone's throw from my door, I will not be back. I realize that mice and food go together, but indifference and rudeness on the part of employees is not something I will tolerate again. read more

I stopped at this store on my way to Boston Logan so that I could get a sandwich for less than the crazy airport prices. The lady behind the deli counter, Denise, was extremely argumentative and combative. She ignored questions I asked before the order, didn't listen to my order, and ultimately messed up the sandwich due to her inability and/or unwillingness to listen. Then, when ordering a second sandwich (my husband was willing to take the first one that she messed up), she became extremely hostile, refused to listen to my questions, and was overall rude in general. read more

This Star is so bad I can hardly afford the time and effort to review them. How they have stayed in business in Auburndale for this long is beyond my comprehension. The produce is notoriously egregious. Limp, brown or too hard, it is poor by third world standards, yet they have no problem charging top first world prices. While service is good sometimes, Romeo, for example is a gem, they rarely employ enough people to answer questions. Phone service is horrendous. Today my call got bounced around like a deflated basketball. As I said, sometimes the service is good, but I have been shopping here for over thirty years and have complained about them long before yelp that I just cannot rate them higher than a one-star rating. Did not have a good visit here as of recent... iv been shopping here for the past year and my last visit may very well have been my last. The store has always been very dirty and staff is rarely ever seen. its almost like they hide from the customers. in speaking of hiding from the customers i stood at the customer service counter and rung the buzzer labeled "Press here for assistance" and to no surprise no-one showed up after 3-4 minuted of waiting. That may not seem like a while but really. How hard is it to come help a customer. On top of this finding a opened milk that spilled all over my girlfriend is just horrible... yeah id tell an employee but THERE WERE NONE AROUND! going back to the employees, that are a real issue.. at the registers they don't even ask if you found everything okay! because no I really didn't. and i couldn't get anyone to help either..
