I was going to deli next door where sandwiches are steep prices when I saw a sign 8.99 sandwiches. Pick our roll, protein, condiments. I order a ham, Swiss cheese on French bread , lettuce, tomatoes, onions, mustard and bacon . Then written was 9.99 on wrapper. I told guy at register I had the make your sandwich for 8.99. He told me that was starting price. I said sign says 8.99 back and forth.... I then figured maybe bacon added was the buck extra ? Then I look at sign and says nothing about bacon... says lettuce tomatoes a 1.50 extra? Or is that for the roast vegetables? Very confusing? Then if charging for lettuce and tomato and onion adds a 1.50 ... not 1.00? Nothing about bacon on sign. Any way sandwich was excellent fresh French bread, all ingredients fresh.. another slice of ham would have been good or Black Forest ham instead... Tasty with the bacon and good sandwich and I think better than deli next door ... the deli sides in case all looked good... didn't see a side of potato or macaroni salad or coke slaw... seafood salad looked to be tasty in a sandwich. Actually looking closer at fine print I should have been charged 1.50 for the bacon and unclear another 1.50 for lettuce, tomato, onion or 1.50 each... then at that price ... sandwich wouldn't have gotten to cashier as too expensive. read more

This transition to new owners of Rob market has been a major upgrade for the community. The store has a good selection of necessities, also an extensive wine and liquor section. It is a great local asset. read more

Waban Market was sold and has totally renovated. it's fresh and clean. The owners and staff are so helpful and courteous. They still carry the unique Eastern Europea/Russian items but have added more everyday foods. Great wine selection. Loads of parking. So much easier than a full supermarket for grab and go. read more

New management has invested in improved shelving, refrigeration, and flooring. The new owners are pleasant and helpful. They have pivoted towards a lot of liquor, and a lot of candy which has displaced some of the previous products. Having said that, some of my favorite products that used to be hit-or-miss are now regularly available. The quality of the produce (which used to be on its last legs on the day of purchase) has improved. The funky Russian deli and prepared foods are still good and unchanged, this part of the store is still staffed by the old *friendly* faces. You can do a lot of your daily shopping here and pick up some delicacies. More than a convenience store, less than a full supermarket.....give the newly renovated Waban Market a try! read more

I've been shopping at Waban Market for 12 years, mostly for the fresh foods and desserts. I've never had a problem with the prepared food. The variety and pricing puts Whole Foods and any supermarket to shame. The foods lean toward Eastern European/Russian/Jewish, since that's what the market really is, and I there are usually new items to try. So for food quality, taste, freshness, price and variety, I give them 5 stars. You don't like that kind of food? Your problem, not theirs. However, in all that time shopping there, I think I may have seen a smile on a staff person once. Maybe. Rather than rude, I find them just unfriendly, and can't disagree with others commenting on their lack of ordinary and expected civil niceties. They're all grumps. Am I seeing typical Russian immigrant behavior or just stereotyping? I don't know, but there's a large Russian (and Ukranian) population in Newton, (and another,larger, Russian market called Baza where the staff is equally glum) and so I run into Russians in various places of business, and they are often quite grumpy. Russians, lighten up, eh? Make our shopping experience more pleasant--we know you can. read more

Where to begin? first of all, the people who work here have NO interest in customer service. i just shopped here for the first time. I wanted it to be great. the staff was so unfriendly. They treat customers like they wish you hadn't come in. i dared to ask a polite question. i was rebuked like I was bothering them. i asked if they had ground beef. The unpleasant woman walked away ( no reply) and came back with a package of less than a pound of ground beef. couldn't bother to ask me how much I would like? There are packages of interesting looking sliced cheeses. all are labeled in a language that is not English.. by this time, I didn't want to bother to ask about the cheeses. i had learned my lesson. Ei yi yi. i could go on. the apricot chicken I bought was nicely seasoned but the chicken pieces were cut up small with BONES. WE HAD TO KEEP SPITTING OUT BONES. Love this store! Their deli counter is the best, especially Rotisserie chicken, knishes, and variety of salads (always fresh). Their selection of grocery items is top notch and varied whether you are looking for tzatsiki, tortillas or gourmet frozen truffle oil pizza you will find it. Tucked into a cute section of Newton is a little bit of Russia. It goes by the name of the Waban Market and it's a great alternative to all of the unsupermarkets in the area. The shelves contain lots of the same things one finds in other stores but it stands out for its vast amount of Russian and eastern European goods. Particularly noteworthy is the deli, which stocks the traditional items one expects but also has all of the special things that today's grocery stores have stopped carrying. I'd go out of my way for the deli alone, but there is so much more. Shoppers find candy from Europe, magazines in Russian, beer and wine in varieties and quantities exceeding that of many other grocery stores and a lot of quirky, unusual items that make great gifts. One morning I was running way early on my daily commute on the green line to Riverside, that I decided to get off early and explore the neighborhood. I stumbled into this place because it was one of the only places open at that time of the morning. For the first time that I can remember, I was completely lost in trying to identify the items I found in the store. I thought they were Russian just because of the characters I found on the packaging. I tried deciphering what some of the items were, but had a hard time because none of the packages I held had a single word in English on them. I gave up and started wandering the aisles to see what else I could find. In the snack aisle, I found an item that blew me away: Desert Pepper salsa, made in my hometown of El Paso!!! I bought a couple of jars to tide me over until I find the product in Boston. I've had no luck in the stores I've looked, so I'll have to make a stop on my commute soon. read more

A fabulous place to shop. we have been devoted customers for more than a dozen years. In addition to fresh produce at favorable prices they have all kinds of exotic Central European food items at very reasonable prices. The deli counter is very comprehensive. Many prepared items (like jam) are made on site. Try the made-to-order sandwiches. Though small, the Waban Market is crowded with things you won't find elsewhere as well as familiar products. There is a good wine and spirits (especially vodka) section and fresh bread is always available. Seasonal menus (Rosh Hashanah, Thanksgiving) are not to be missed. I feel so lucky to live walking distance from this store. The prices are totally in line with bigger chains, their wine and alcohol section is outstanding, and their deli is terrific. I've been able to buy European cookies here that I've only seen in Europe! If you are looking for Russian specialty foods, they have a fabulous selection. This is one interesting "market". I was in the area and in need of two specific items. Since there isn't a supermarket within the immediate area, I thought I'd stop here and pick up the two items I needed. This store, Waban Market, is a small grocery store on Windsor Road, right in the heart of Waban. I would assume lots of local residents shop here when they need a dozen of eggs, or something like that, without trekking to a ginormous grocery store. My only actual concern with this store is the facility in itself. I looked up a few times and the ceiling seriously looks DANGEROUS. It looks like there has been serious leakage and the tiles could just come apart at any time.... there isn't any beams keeping them intact! Other than that though, it's a lovely little shop, with more than you would perceive from just looking at it. Almost as much as a small grocery store, with lots of selection in every department. Huge deli, lots of dairy, and not to mention the gigantic beer and wine section. Lots of snacks, candy, household items, and a complete Ethnic aisle as well. Store is pretty tight, so not much extra space, but they have carts that actually are small and made to fit, so you won't need to worry about that. By the way, if you are making a small purchase, just be told that credit / debit cards can only be used on purchases over $10. Staff are friendly and make checkout fast and efficient. And also, I was very surprised when the cashier gave me a plastic bag! Newton banned plastic bags in all retail businesses.... I like how they just don't care (plus that rule is ridiculous!). Perfect food for any occasion I am a foodie.. I traveled all over the world and tried and enjoyed many cuisines, flavors and specialties. When it comes to buying food in the US, I like my food authentic, fresh, home cooked and made with all natural and healthy ingredients. It took me a while to discover the treasures awaiting at Waban Market. You walk in and the traditional grocery store is in front of you. But then one wonders little bit to the left of the store where the FOOD is... OMG!!! Did I mentioned that I do have a sweet tooth too? There are always at least 9 freshly made torts on display - take as little or as much as you want. But this is where the conflict just starts - torts vs crepes vs Napoleons vs Cherry Buns vs... so may things... But sweets are not the only reason I com here... I have two kids - teenagers... I am single dad and I love to cook... and I like to feed my kids with good food... but I do "cheat" on cooking some time... I come here and every time I get something different - stuffed cabbage, fried fish fillets, chicken schnitzel (my daughter's favorite), Russian salad, or something else - there are so many home cooked meals that I always end up buying too much. It's a great neighborhood market. They have pretty much everything, and their price is reasonable, too. I don't have to go elsewhere for grocery shopping. As others say, they have a great wine selection and very good Russian deli. Beer section gets expanded. With T station, banks and a friendly post office, you don't need a car in Waban. read more

I love the food here, however, the people that work there are SO rude! I honestly hate giving them my business because they are so mean, even the young guy at the checkout register. Maybe someone should teach him the word "thank you". He basically just grabs your money and can't wait for you to leave the line for the next customer. Note: Price competitive: - Occasionally the local weekly paper runs a price comparison (standard market basket of items) on the markets in the area - six or seven big chains and independent Waban Market. Waban Mkt typically shows the lowest or 2nd lowest price.. Great performance for family-run market. Wine Prices: - Great variety and wide price range. The low end wines are as low priced and as good as you'll find at the big wine stores, even the Washington Street favorite near Our Lady's. AND, owner Yan will order what you want, a single bottle or a case, again at prices competitive with the big guys. Deli: - Got to agree with others. Great prepared foods. Some unusual and very tasty breads made on premises (available at the deli counter). Not the largest selection of ready-to-slice cheeses and meats but very adequate. Ask about the Russian hams and get a sample. Tastes like my MIchigan home town where we had two local butchers who smoked their own hams and bacon. Freebies - Us neighbors run in (or bike over) for the last minute ingredient or whatever we ran out of. 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, is like having a giant pantry up at the corner. However, when you do a "regular" shopping and hit a minimum - I think it's $50 in non-alcohol - you do get a free 100 gram chocolate from the eastern Bloc area. Now it may be a month or two out of date... but who cares? Down-side? Not the cleanest super market I've seen. But then the Farmer's Market doesn't have clean floors either. And Asian markets in both Boston and Hong Kong are much less clean on floors, etc. The food is protected and handled well. read more

Waban Market is my store of choice for daily food needs. It covers all categories, with many items, especially prepared foods, revealing the Russian, Jewish origins of the owners. In the past 2 weeks, besides doing regular food shopping, I assembled a wonderful luncheon menu from the deli counter (soup, entrees and dessert) and found the perfect last-minute birthday gift. The standout item is fresh-baked sunflower bread. It's incredible if you can get it when it's warm. There are several bulk items I buy there, though not all of my needs. Produce is adequate, with the exception that berries are always cheap and good quality. The store is compact, but usually stocked with at least choice in what I need, along with many surprising items as well. read more

Going to Waban Market makes you feel like you're not in 2008 Greater Boston. It's a little family-owned Russian market. And it sells BEER and WINE! They have a prepared food counter with all sorts of yummy things. I really like the place. It's a nice alternative to the Shaws and Stop and Shops around. Do not buy the fruit here. It is usually spoiled or spoils within one day. However their cooked chicken is quite delicious with lots of paprika - a little bit spicy. Also if you spend a certain amount of money they usually give you a chocolate bar which is quite a nice treat.
