Really bad if you're a new customer. Requested an appt, was rejected 7 days later because he said the consultation shouldn't be same day as cut. That's fine, I requested to keep the consultation without the cut and he ghosted me. If he had rejected the appt up front I could have just rescheduled a consultation without the cut, but he waited a week and canceled everything including the consultation. Just killed a week for me because he doesn't seem to care. Don't waste your time. read more

When I relocated to CA almost 6 years ago, my hair was in desperate need of a cut and color. Finding a good hair dresser / stylist is as important as finding a good Dr. / Dentist etc. I was putting it off because I didn't know anybody in the area. One day one of my clients came in with an AMAZING color job - I asked her who did it. She told me it was Juan - from Cost Cutters in San Bruno. Cost Cutters was in the same shopping plaza I worked at so I went in. To say I was nervous is an understatement. It felt like going to a fast food chain for a night out but I was desperate - and her color was fabulous. I couldn't believe what a great job he did. And what a personality! I was watching him as my color was processing, his clients LOVED HIM. He must have done 3 cuts while he was waiting for my color to take, he knows his way around a pair of scissors ;) I had to address the elephant in the room - why was a guy with this kind of talent working at Cost Cutters? He should have his own salon. Turns out, it was his last month there, he was in the process of relocating - so glad I went in when I did! That was almost 6 years ago. He was working at Star City Salon and Glamour salon in Alameda. Within the last year he's left Glamour and took over Star City. He's completely remodeled it - it looks so clean and fresh. I just left, he did highlights and low-lights. Even though I was heading home, he took an extra 30 minutes to style it perfectly. He said he was hoping it would inspire me to go do something fun instead of just going home. One time I was heading to the gym after seeing him, I told him it didn't need to be styled. He said nobody leaves his chair w/out looking beautiful, he doesn't care if I'm only going to the gym. A couple years ago I stopped to get gas after my hair appointment w/Juan. When I went to pay, I couldn't find my debit card. I assumed I must have left it at Star City. Thankfully I had $10.00 cash on me to get enough gas to go back. I called Juan from the gas station, asked him if I'd left it there. He said it wasn't on the counter. I was SURE it had to be there, I'd just used it there. I went back to search for it. By the time I got there, he'd already looked through all the trash cans, behind the desk - he'd looked everywhere. I looked again, it was nowhere to be found. I called my bank to cancel the card and send a new one. Juan asked me if I'd looked in my car. I hadn't - and I remembered my purse fell over when a car slammed on the breaks in front of me. I went out to check my car - it was in between the seat and the console. I immediately called my bank back, they said it was too late, they couldn't reverse the cancellation and there was no way to access the funds in my account., I wouldn't have access to the funds for several days because it was a Friday night, the new card wouldn't be there until Monday or Tuesday. What did Juan do? He handed me $100.00 and asked me if that was enough to make it until the card arrived - he said I could pay him back the next time I saw him (in 5 WEEKS!) - I paid him the day I got my card. This guy is one of a kind. When you're with Juan, you become part of his family. If you are w/in an hour drive of Brisbane, I highly recommend the trip to Star City to see Juan - he's an amazing stylist.....but more importantly.....an amazing human being. read more

I have been getting my hair done by Dayeli for about 9 years now! I will never let anyone else but her touch my hair. I have moved further away and will make the hour and a half drive to have her color my hair. She really goes above and beyond to provide you the best service and color possible all while maintaining your hair healthy. She isn't like those other stylists out there who will fry your hair just to give you the result of whatever picture you showed as an inspiration. She is honest and will tell you what realistically can be done with your hair. She has literally taken me from black hair to blonde without damaging my hair. I'm going to be in a friend's wedding this weekend. After spending plenty of money on the bridesmaid's dress, bachelorette party gift, wedding shower outfit, etc. I thought I'd just ignore the fact that my highlights were growing out, big time. I had about an inch and a half of darkness at the top because I haven't been to Star City Salon since before Christmas. While packing for the wedding today and trying out wedding hairstyles in my bathroom I realized I really couldn't get away without a touch-up. I mean, these pictures are going to be my friend's wedding pictures forever and we should all look as wonderful as possible. So I called Star City and left a message asking for V's contact info--she works out of several salons in the Bay Area. She not only called me back within an hour, she got me in there for an hour later! THREE hours later I left with an amazingly natural looking head of hair, highlighted to perfection with ALL ORGANIC dyes. I highly recommend Juan! My hair is very unruly and thick. I've always struggled with it. Juan is the type of hair stylist that takes the time to assess your hair, understand what you want, and then COMMUNICATES BACK TO YOU what can be done with your hair. For example, I wanted short, I didn't want layers, but Juan explained to my my hair texture and what it would mean if I had short, unlayered hair. He will always let me decide what I want to do afterward, but he gives me the option to make informed decisions. BTW, I learned I should just take his advice. I've been going to him for years now and I just let him decide what he wants to do. My hair is healthy and I have a regimen at home to keep it under control. I've been going to him for many many years. :) Oh, and on top of all of that, Juan is very friendly, easy-going, and has a wonderful sense of humor. Ever since I emigrated (ha!) to Brisbane, I've been trusting my highlights to Juan at Star City. This isn't something I take lightly, since I had been seeing my stylist in SF for over a decade. But I am soooo happy with my new salon: it's cozy, homey, and walking distance from my home. Talk about convenient! Juan does an extraordinary job with my long locks, and he's reasonably priced. A fantastic hair stylist who took time to talk about my hair and what I wanted. I wanted bangs and he did warn me that they would grow out quickly and I also had a cowlick so he explained how my hair would behave but we decided to go ahead and I was thrilled with the result. He was meticulous when cutting it and did a wonderful job. Not only that but he is super funny, interesting and easy to talk to which is great when you are stuck in a chair for hours.
