Such a cute cafe and study spot! We ordered the Apple Fritter and had it warmed; it was so delicious! The inside was soft and gooey with apple and cinnamon, with a crisp exterior which made for a perfect combination. The apple fritter was so delicious, probably one of the best I've had. We came here to study and were able to get a spot. The seating is limited as the inside of the cafe is small, but it was cozy and comfortable. There are also lots of charging outlets which is nice. What a great location, not just geographically, but the aesthetic is relaxing and chill. They have a lovely pergola outside that allows for outdoor seating (5, 4 tops) when there's great weather and there's both counter-style seating and smaller tables with chair and bench seating. Although a small footprint, They have plenty of tables and single sided work benches, and free internet. Not great for food, so more of a coffee date place or a place to do work. Th decor is very cozy and hipster-ish, and they sell some Came here on a rainy Sunday In the late morning. There were about ten other people there, but still plenty of space. Employees are fast and friendly, and helped a couple behind me in alpine figure out what they would like. I grabbed a Banana but muffin (tasty! Unique variety of beats playing most times may suit your study needs or throw off your groove entirely. There is easier parking after 5 but they don't stay open into the evening like Grayhouse or Vienna nor offer the wonderfully budget conscious menu of Sacred Grounds. Despite other better places for my preferences, Star City has nice outdoor seating, muffins to feed royalty, and their own style on drinks. the place is OK, my one star is about ONE bad experience. I had 3 drinks here, same drink every morning, same price (4 shots of espresso). Until the 4th morning, when the price doubled - for the exact same drink, and the amount was halved. Mystery. It is also a mystery that I said it out loud, not arguing, just stating these facts politely,, paid and left. The only answer I received from the gentleman was that this is the "REAL" price. One would think that when a customer raises two issues and also sees that you only poured the espresso once, he is not stupid, just gets the facts. This is actually my second review and an update, as I think my first one disappeared into the void/filter. To rehash some things, I have Star City labeled as the "modern hipster college coffee place" in my head. It was my favorite place to go to write when I was in college, and I stopped by again for a few hours when I recently came back for a visit. It's located in downtown Lafayette, so altogether off campus. Not super convenient on school days when I usually also had work, but I've been told it's great if you actually do live in Lafayette rather than West Lafayette. Especially if you don't want to deal with on-campus parking or if you don't want to have to navigate in the Chauncey area to get to Greyhouse or Vienna. But otherwise, it's a pretty convenient spot. If you're walking, then it's from Wabash Landing, across the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge, over the railroads, and you're there (second spot to the left after Red Seven, it's just slightly tucked away). If you choose to take the bus instead, the easiest route is to just take any bus to CityBus Center, and walk two streets over. And if you're driving, I'd suggest parking on Ferry Street (one over from Main) as it's free on the weekends or in the Lafayette Bank and Trust parking garage (also on Ferry Street, close to N 2nd St). It's was $1 an hour with a cap at $8 last time I checked. Actually, I usually cut through the garage when I'm coming from that direction either way. There's a shortcut via a white door in the back of the garage that cuts through to Main Street, and coincidentally right next to Star City. It's built to be a coffee shop as well as a bar for college students. Meaning, you'll have electrical outlets peppered everywhere and along every table because this place is meant for students to set up at and get to work. When I can't get a table, I'm perfectly willing to sit along the window counter, which also has electrical outlets along either side (look about foot level). Additionally, the menu set up is set up so that both coffee and tea drinkers have adamant fuel, as well as actual light meals and snacks (sandwich, pastries, yogurts, etc.). Next to the door, there's usually a keg of cold water you can fill your water bottle with. If you don't have a bottle, there's mason jars in the cubby underneath. It's all set up so you cam stay there from opening to closing without needing to leave. And from what I've seen, all these things also makes Star City a favorite spot for people to stop by for a drink, snack, or charge whenever there is an event happening on Main Street or the Pedestrian bridge Additionally, they have some games laying around in the back, usually in the area nook bar. It's not super popular or known as a bar, but it really is a hipster place to grab a drink. I usually stick to an iced matcha latte or smoothie during the summer and normal latte during snowy or rainy days for the caffeine. I got a cheesecake this time around, but I'm REALLY SAD that they don't sell the cupcakes anymore (goodbye, my favorite salted-caramel cupcake...). I will mourn for it. Overall, a great place to writing, read, work, and feel vaguely like a college hipster. It has a great atmosphere and I mind I usually get a lot of stuff done here. Be aware that the place itself isn't not that big, and can only fit a limited number of people. As a result, they get pretty crowded/busy later in the day. It's why I usually arrive earlier in the morning. I've met some pretty great people there and had some deep conversations that resulted in me sharing a table or lending a charger to the person sitting nearby. And even if you're looking specifically to not interact with others, still be open to share a table. In the end, most people go there to get their work done. read more

Wow what a gem of an authentic espresso cafe. I especially recommend the cordado that pairs an appetizingly bitter espresso with a small amount of milk fat, common in Spanish speaking countries. Basically a proper macchiato with a couple spoonfuls of milk added. If you want a shitty Starbucks coffee hosed with disturbing corn syrup sugars, you'll need to go down the street. My first visit here! I went here somewhat unplanned. I was meeting friends at Java Roaster around the corner but it was closed, so we went to Star City. The interior is nice and funky, and it was busy from a downtown festival and the fact that Java Roaster was closed. We had to wait a long time for our drinks, but it was busy. My latte was well made. We spent two hours here talking, so it is a comfortable place to sit with friends. I would definitely like to go back. read more

I love Star City, it's one off only two coffee shops I enjoy in Lafayette. I'm from the east coast and am used to having a selection of local, low key coffee shops with excellent coffee. Star city is a nice break from the mediocrity of Starbucks, which seems to be one of the only places to get your caffeine fix around Purdue. Their atmosphere is nice as well. It's got a chill vibe, and is a great place to get some work done. My only complaint is the limited in door seating. During the summer, however, they have a patio area with more seating. Its wonderful to sit out there and just enjoy the sunlight. They're also pretty dog friendly, which is another plus. I enjoy their seasonal lattes as well, although I usually just get the French press coffee. Sometimes I mix it up. So far the orange mocha latte was my favorite. In general, this place reminds me of home. Its inviting and relaxing atmosphere really makes it a special addition to downtown Lafayette. And they keep things fresh with seasonal drinks. Overall, a pretty great place. Location: On Main Street downtown between 2nd and 3rd. It is across the road from the Black Sparrow, a fact that is often evidenced by the overlap in clientele between the two establishments (on multiple occasions I've seen Black Sparrow servers/bartenders drop in for coffee during the day). Service: Easily one of Star City's highlights. The baristas are friendly but not overbearing. The espresso machine is situated such that they face you as they make the drinks. This makes it easier for them to carry on a conversation with you while you wait for your order, which they readily do. Typically they finish off the barista process with a flourish, via a decorative cinnamon/nutmeg sprinkling on top of the drink. It may not amount to much, but it's a nice touch. Atmosphere: In a word, great. The place has a welcoming look, with a rustic/steampunk feel. Solid-looking stained wood galore, and plenty of neat, if typical, coffee-related decoratives. The "star" theme is carried out nicely, with star-shaped cutouts in the chairs and elsewhere. They play decent coffee-shop-esque music, i.e. soft indie rock. Last time I went in I heard tracks from Miike Snow and Vampire Weekend. Above all, it is a good place to go and do work in the vein of studying/writing. The tables are nice and solid, there are plenty of power outlets for computer chargers, and the atmosphere is generally quiet and cozy. The window table is a favorite workstation of mine. Drinks: They have the usual assortment of hot/cold tea and coffee drinks. The hot drinks are good, particularly the dirty chai and cappuccino. They are reasonably priced as well. One complaint is that a few times my drink hasn't come out quite as pipingly-hot as I would like. They also serve beer, with a small selection of decent options on that front. As beer-drinking usually happens later in the day, Star City stays open until 10:00 on most nights. Food: They have a nice selection of panini sandwiches for lunch, but the real attraction here is the cupcakes. They sit temptingly in a display case left of the register. The variety is always great, with a good mix of traditional choices alongside some really creative ones. I personally liked the salted caramel, but have also tried a (tasty) avocado lime and a (slightly stale) chocolate cherry. Went here for lunch and had a good lunch. I had the caprese panino and my friend had the Granny Smith and we both enjoyed them. They come with a bag of kettle chips or a banana. I thought they were a good size...not too big and not too small. The special iced tea of the day was a mojito green tea that was good (50 cents for refills). Line was 3-4 parties deep, seating was hard to find, and the staff seemed a little rattled. I ordered 2 drinks and the barista told me there were numerous orders in front of mine. Approx 1 min later an order was ready under my name with the exact drinks I ordered. I was confused because there were about 6-8 people in front of me waiting for their drinks. I asked the barista if they were mine and she said "they must be" so I took them. About 40 min later another order under my name was read with the exact drinks I ordered again. I already had my drinks so those 2 drinks just sat on the counter and were never claimed. The drinks were hit and miss. I ordered a lavender vanilla latte, a little too floral for me but I could see how someone might enjoy it. My sister ordered a Nutella latte, very good and not too sweet. I pulled over to give them a try - the coffee was a bit bitter for me, but I just really like sweet coffee drinks. They had some unique offerings on their menu, so I had a grilled peanut butter and banana sandwich along with a cupcake. Another hidden gem of Downtown Lafayette! Seriously wish I discovered this place earlier on in my undergrad career because it boasts an incredibly cozy, peaceful space for studying or catching up with friends over coffee. They have some pretty intriguing drink choices here. The Agave Latte and the Nutella Latte caught my eye, but I ultimately decided to give the Vanilla Lavender Latte a try (I'm a sucker for anything lavender). I thought the lavender flavor was a little too subtle, but I was glad that it didn't taste syrupy like most lavender lattes I've tried in the past. Overall, it was pretty satisfactory, but not something I would come back specifically for. In addition to coffee, they also offer salads, sandwiches, waffles, and baked goods. I was able to steal a few bites of my roommate's panini that we both agreed was SO good. She ordered the Star City Turkey, which came with a choice of chips or an apple. It had turkey, mozzarella, tomato, basil, cream cheese and chives-- basically a "dressed up" caprese sandwich in my opinion. I really loved how the flavors came together in each bite.
