They also lost my keys for about 20 minutes when I came to pick up the vehicle. I decided to get a second opinion, and that shop not only showed me evidence that the two reported issues didn't exist, but also found bad bearings that this shop said were fine. We had a very disappointing experience with Stan's Automotive. After bringing our car in, we were given a long list of "urgent" repairs with a very high price tag. The way it was presented felt like they were using fear to pressure us -- repeatedly saying things like "we just want to ensure safety" in a way that made us feel like our car was dangerous to drive unless we agreed right then and there. Something didn't feel right, so we took our car to another trusted shop for a second opinion. We're so glad we did. Not only was the cost much lower, but we were told that several of the repairs Stan's claimed were needed weren't necessary at all. In other words, they tried to scare us with "safety" language in order to sell work we didn't need -- and at an inflated price. This left us feeling misled and taken advantage of. We have had nothing but excellent service at Stan's. We had to have new tires for one car -- I called several shops after I received the estimate from Stan's and the price was the same from all the shops. We had an alignment done and it also was the same price as other shops I called. I recently went in, without an appointment, as the low tire pressure light came on just hours after the car was serviced -- and tires checked -- at the dealership: Stan's looked at the car immediately and found that all the tires were low. Stan's inflated the tires to the correct pressure and installed stem caps (which the dealer had forgotten to replace) at no charge. I have no complaints and would recommend this shop! read more

I've been coming here for 30 years, but the last few have been beyond disappointing. There is a strong push to up-sell due to "safety concerns." Stan's was never like that in the past. My son took his truck there recently and the repair was so bad we had to take it somewhere else. I want to warn everyone about this Stan's Automotive in Lafayette CO. The people are friendly, the service good. HOWEVER, they do 2 things that are grossly UNETHICAL: 1. They overcharge enormously! for both the labor AND the parts 2. They recommend replacing things that do NOT need replacing I have taken our car to Stan's several times on recommendation of others. NEVER again! Here's what happened. My 2005 Ford Focus died in the middle of the street. I had to have it towed and they were the nearest repair shop. I gave permission for Stan's to run diagnostics to find the problem and told them what symptoms led up to the car dying. I was told it would cost between $180 up to $220. But when I gave a clear and detailed description of what led up to the car dying and not being able to start, he agreed with me it was likely an electrical problem and probably the alternator, which I thought it might be. After running the diagnostic tests, Stan's quoted me a price of $946.82 to replace the alternator and the serpentine drive belt (which was cracked). I was told I should consider getting the spark plugs replaced too, as the labor would be a little cheaper doing that at the same time. "How much would that be?" I asked. Another $900, I was told. I chose to have the car towed the 16 miles to my regular repair shop. Not only did they repair it in 24 hours. The bill was only $681. That means Stan's was going to charge me 50% MORE THAN MY SHOP! Highway robbery. Furthermore, Stan's invoice showed $419.95 for the cost of the alternator and $109.95 for the cost of the belt and $370 for labor. My shop, Glenwood Auto in North Boulder, charged me just $262.68 for the alternator, $38.99 for the drive belt, and $322 for labor, to Stan's $370. I'm disgusted with Stan's and am wondering whether this is how they overcharge all of their customers. hmm. I can recommend Glenwood Auto in north Boulder without any reservation. Long story short, they told me I needed a $6000 transmission. Over a year and a road trip to Texas later! My car is still driving? They charged me to replace fluids and diagnose the problem. Extremely disappointed in every way -- quality of workmanship and customer service, I can not recommend this shop, unfortunately. After 4 out of 4 disappointing experiences here, I am through trying to work with them. My final disappointing experience involved their installation of a set of 4 top of the line Michelin Defender tires for my truck. Each of these tires costs $280 (so, $1040 for the set). I chose these tires due to their quality and because they were rated at 70K miles. The factory-installed Bridgestone tires on this 2014 truck lasted 58K miles with no unusual wear patterns. The factory-installed brakes are at 85K miles and just needing replacement. My driving habits are not extreme, and are in fact pretty conservative. I drive a LOT and try to prevent unnecessary wear & tear on my truck. That said, when Stan's installed my new Michelin tires and did the alignment, they put a negative camber on the front tires. I did not find this out until I took it in for an oil change 15K miles later, and the inner 1/4 of my front tires were BALD. It is only visible when the wheels are turned drastically left or right, because the outside of the tires are relatively unworn (due to the pressure on the inner tire edge). As soon as I found out, I called Stan's and their response was, "We could not possibly have done your alignment incorrectly. Either you hit something or a part in your front end is broken, causing the wear." The service advisor literally would not do a thing about it. Not a free diagnostic (not that I would trust them anyway) or a free re-alignment, nothing. I am out 2, almost brand-new Michelin Defender Tires because of Stan's. Tires that were supposed to last 70K miles are worn down to the radial cords with only 20K miles on them. I am currently having a replacement set of 2 tires put on at another shop (another $850 cost to me with installation and alignment!!!) and asked them to tell me what damage there is that would be causing the wear. They said, "None. Your front end is tight. Nothing is broken or loose, it was just a poor alignment job." Stan's great reviews are misleading. Maybe at one time this shop was great, but not anymore. The other poor experiences I've had here involved a mysterious "bad gasket" after an oil change, which leaked oil all over my driveway and I had to get pressure washed (wonder if the filter was simply not tightened properly, or cross-threaded?), small jobs taking 3 times as long as had been estimated while I cooled my heels in the waiting room for hours on end, being asked to rush over to drop my truck off at 7:30 am yet by 11:30 am it wasn't even up on the rack yet (!) when I called for an update. Just poor service every time I have come here, and now, a shoddy AND extremely expensive tire install that the service advisor didn't attempt to mitigate in *any* fashion the 2 times I called him about it. DO NOT GO HERE - these people will rip you off, gaslight you when you call them out on it, and think they can get away with it if you are a woman or a person with a disability, both of which I am. We brought our car in for the first time based on what we thought were good reviews...never again... Although we brought the car in the early morning they didn't call us until an hour before closing. We asked them to fix two issues, which they did neither but instead told us they tightened some screws for $120. One issue we asked them to check out is an ear piercing rattling noise that the car makes while idling. I say ear piercing because it is so loud that people actually stare when we pull up to the curb, but Stan's tried to tell us that the mechanic 'couldn't duplicate the noise' - as if we're that stupid. Then they asked us to write a review, but we said we couldn't do that because they didn't fix the car and then we asked for a refund, which they didn't give us and instead gave us a whole lotta attitude. Our family has been relying on another business in the area for all of our vehicle maintenance for the past 18 years. We recently realized that over the past 3 services, 2 of the 3 of vehicles we had serviced had to return for one reason or another. I looked at reviews and talked to neighbors and decided to go with Stan's Automotive. I'm extremely happy I did. They were transparent upfront with expected costs and kept me updated as they completed the diagnostic. After completing the recommended work my 2004 Honda with 175,000 miles is performing better than it has is years. I highly recommend Stan's. read more

I normally call the manufacturer's dealership the STEALership because of how much they overcharge for what they do. Stan's is no better, and in some ways worse. I've worked on my own cars for 20+ years but was in a bind when I realized I was way past the service date for an essential service and needed it done quickly. We tried Stan's for both of our high mileage Subarus. I was pleased at first since they were very thorough, though a bit expensive. After a few services I noticed a pattern. Parts markup is crazy. They use NAPA parts, for which they upcharge you quite a bit. Sometimes double the retail cost that you would pay if you walked into NAPA and bought it yourself. Stan's does not reduce charges for overlapping labor. I paid for a timing belt/water pump and radiator hoses/coolant flush. Radiator and water pump are main parts of the cooling system so when you take them out, the coolant naturally has to be drained. I was charged AGAIN for a coolant flush for the radiator hose replacement which was done at the same time. Labor is about 80% of the cost for this service so that is hundreds of dollars down the drain. After I had these services done, I brought the car home, then the NEXT DAY, I drove 10 miles and the car overheated. Brought it back and Stan's they said the thermostat had mysteriously failed. Likely the thermostat was damaged due to overheating because they didn't get all of the air out of the coolant system on the previous service. Stan's charged me over a hundred bucks to replace the thermostat, a problem they created themselves. Finally, after having them replace the thermostat, I brought the car home and it was smoking. Apparently, they managed to spill/dump tons of coolant into the nooks and crannies of the exhaust heat shields, causing it to burn off for miles and miles. I would not recommend this shop. I will continue to do as much service at home as I can, and I will be finding another shop that's honest and frankly competent. read more

This was my first time to Stan's and I went there because I heard good things about this business. I took my truck in for it's 100,000 mile check up. They performed some scheduled maintenance and did a couple of needed repairs. The final will was about $1100.00 and it was done in a timely manner. They were very polite and they communicated with me during the whole process. I will return to Stan's for repairs and or maintenance on my vehicles in the future. read more

Bait & Switch! If I could give this shop ZERO stars, I would. We bought a Napa oil change coupon from a door to door salesman a while back. He assured us that the value of the coupon was $70 for each oil change and we would have to pay "a little extra" for synthetic oil and would have to wait 60-90 minutes for the service to be performed. Well, they charge us an extra $19.32 and had us leave the car at the shop for half the day. The pictures show that the total charge for the oil change is $77.77 and the value of coupon clearly shows a $70.00 value. When I asked why we're paying an extra $19.32 instead of $7.77, the shop manager said it was shop fees. What kind of shop fees? He couldn't explain it and got snarky. He said that they didn't sell these coupons and unfortunately they "have to deal with them." The coupon states they are looking for Lifetime Customers, well Stan's is doing the opposite. I just took my Honda Accord in to have the brakes replaced. After picking up my car the heater fan was no longer working; even though it was working that very morning. (Could have picked that moment to quit) I took my car back the next day and was told that it needed a new transmitter at a cost of $270. I called Frontier Honda to price the same part installed and it was $115. I called Stan's back to make sure that they quoted me correctly and the service counter guy said "you should take it there then." (Frontier that is) seriously?!! I was also told by Stan's that the transmission needed to be flushed for a price over $250. After speaking with Honda they said the transmission should never be flushed as it will damage the transmission. And to have transmission cleaned and fluids replaced is only $75 at Frontier. Lastly I compared the brake job cost and recommendations to what Frontier Honda would recommend and not only was it about half the price that I paid to Stan's, but I probably didn't need some of the things that Stan's recommended. In general, they are good but make mistakes just like any other shop (and correct them) I recently needed to have the spark plugs changed on our Toyota and asked them for a quote......$450. That seemed high so i called Mountain States Toyota, their price $315 and I also called another local shop, $300. I like Stan's , they do good work but their prices are just to high. VERY disappointed. I bought 0W20 oil for my car as I thought I'd read in my manual with the accompanying oil filter. The crew at Stan's put that in in November with no issues. They put a sticker on my car saying when I should come in for my next oil change, but recommending 5W20 oil. I dutifully bought this oil and its accompanying filter I came in today with the oil and filter and requested a tire rotation.. They put the car in the bay and ten minutes later informed me it was the wrong oil and filter. I told them I followed their, the experts', recommendation. They apologized. There was no offer to buy the oil and filter from me (they would definitely use the sealed container and filter through someone else). They didn't offer to do the tire rotation for free. This was WITHOUT QUESTION their mistake. I have zero reservations about this; I checked the sticker three times to make sure I got the right one. Their reaction: "Sorry". I got back in my car and the sticker was ripped off my windshield leaving behind a nice residue that I will have to clean up before dust gathers on the adhesive. I assume they did this to cover up their mistake. Now I am out $30 for specialized oil (which they recommended) and a filter that won't work with either of our cars. Their inaction to fix their error is a bad business decision that cost them two revolving accounts.and if I was Stan I would take a long, hard look at the business practices taking place. read more

This used to be my go-to place and I've had a lot of work done here, a few thousand dollars worth. Always super courteous and professional. Their prices were always high but I didn't realize that at the time and was too lazy to shop around. Every time I had them do a full inspection, they gave me an extensive list of repairs but most of them didn't seem crucial and my vehicle is older so I just ignored most of them. Glad I did because after several years and 30,000+ miles, I haven't had any problems with the things they listed. That said, I never had any issues with their quality of work. Last time I went in was about a year ago. I had a nail in my tire and they told me the tire wasn't repairable and would have to be replaced. Furthermore, they recommended I replace an additional tire that was in perfectly good condition so that things were balanced or whatever. The cost was going to be almost $300. I wound up taking it to Federal Tire & Wheel in Denver and told them the story and they said this place was trying to rip me off. They patched the tire for $5. This was about a year ago and that tire is still performing great! read more

$170 for nothing but to find how inexperienced Stan's front office team has become. My only option from the tech was a $2500 quote given his lack of knowledge of Ford ABS systems. I have been going to Stan's since 1989. At that time and for a while, they had top notch shop techs that were actually listened to to by the front office guys and the business provided fair value for their services. Now and for what I see as maybe 15 years they have become a money making venture, exclusively, and forgot about fair service. I cannot recommend Stan's for anything other than small, simple repairs and you're going to pay as much as any dealer shop. So sad to see any company go downhill. read more

The mechanics at Stan's Tire are like Colorado's own Car Talk hosts, complete with a repair shop. I had a Saturn under warranty that kept having its power steering pump go out. Each time, GM would replace it at considerable expense, but not think twice about it. I asked Stan's staff about it and they knew immediately what I was talking about -- a design flaw that can be fixed with a wider hose, for about $5. I took that information back to the Saturn dealer, and instead of replacing the power steering pump yet again, they replaced the hose. (Stan's had no problem recommending work to be done at the dealer, under warranty.) While the prices at Stan's can be a little higher, their staff is honest and low-pressure. They have no problem explaining DIY fixes, showing you what they're talking on the car itself, or giving you advice on how long you can hold off on doing semi-urgent repairs. Their repairs are always done on time and once they even stayed open a little late for me when I was running late to pick up my car. Stan's represents that rare nexus of honesty, competence, professionalism, and timeliness in an auto shop. Plus they have free wifi and comfy couches in the lobby. read more

I've been back to Stan's multiple times since my first visit. I get regular oil changes and service interval maintenance done. What's nice about Stan's is that they will check everything the service interval maintenance and let you know the items should really be replaced or not. This saves you money compared to the dealer which would often just replace no matter what. I've also utilized Stan's to look over a used car purchase. They do a used car service check to give you an idea of the condition of the car you're looking to purchase. They request to have the car for a few hours though, so make sure you allow that time within your schedule. If your car is going to be tied up for awhile, Stan's will gladly drive you to work or a nearby location if you need or you can arrange for a loaner car if they're available. The loaner car is nothing fancy, but it's clean and gets you from A to B. read more

Blogging your experiences about a poor service provider is therapeutic. It really does help you get through your bad experience. Additionally, commiserating with others with a similar experience can also help. Last, if folks perform their due diligence before making that purchase, before plunking down $30,000, and most certainly before you meet a sales person devoid of all human traits it's likely you will not have regrets later. Remember, the only person looking after your interests IS YOU! So with all the attention being given to bad reviews, what about the good reviews? They too are important for making informed decisions. Back many years ago when I first started going to Stan's, I was skeptical. Much like I was with pretty much all dealerships. Are they really fixing my Truck? Why are they charging so much money? Why is it taking 14 days for an oil change. Yes, I purchased this from your dealership. No you didn't. Yes I did! NO you did not and we will not pay for this recall. Uggh! Because my skepticism continued with Stan's Automotive, I felt compelled to go back to the dealership, even though "Every" time I did, I regretted it. Sometimes I can be such a dumb-ass. So I started shopping around for a cheaper alternative only to find myself, once again, going back to the dealership (even for oil changes). I knew my experience would be less than positive, but felt the dealership was a better solution than dealing with an unknown. What finally cured me of my skepticism was desperation. Basically we lost the antilock braking system on my wife's car. Stopping the car was like breaking on a 1950's lumber truck fully loaded. It was extremely difficult to drive and a real bummer, besides being unsafe, I needed drive the family to all events. My wife was scared and was not strong enough to fully stop the car. Since we were weeks from our warranty expiring, I took the car into the dealership. After about the 5th or 6th time and we still had the problem, I set aside my skepticism with Stan's. I still had my doubts, but again, I also was not able to find a garage I felt good about. So I took the car to Stan's Automotive. It was the BEST decision I made! Stan's fix the problem in about 20 minutes after they got the car up on the hoist. The longest part of the repair was waiting on the backlog of scheduled customers (I was a walk in). I have so many more stories, but to end this, I highly recommend Stan's Automotive for all your car repairs. read more

Hands down would recommend this repair shop to anyone who is looking for honest, thorough and friendly service. I was driving through Lafayette on my way back to Nederland and my Toyota Tacoma was making some horrible clunking. Pulled into Stan's because it was on the way, requesting a safety check, wondering if I could drive it to my mechanic in Boulder or if I needed a tow. Larry took time out of his day to test drive, put it on a lift and make needed adjustments and get me on the road with a minimal diagnostic and shop charge. I'm so grateful. I had to take a work vehicle to get some minor work done. They called me with the price I said let's do it. I picked it up the next day overcharged. Then had to take it back because my AC didn't work. Which was working previously. Usually I take my tools out so things don't come up missing in good faith I didn't. Come to find out things came up missing. I checked the oil and it was black and didn't look like it was changed. I will not be taking my work vehicle back and definitely not my personal either. Edited 5-9-17 Very disappointed in this shop. Based on the all the positive reviews, when my sister-in-law's truck broke down, I advised her to take it to Stan's. The truck just stopped running and wouldn't restart. Stan's asked for $140 to diagnose it, which seemed very fair. After spending an hour or two on the truck, they called and said it needed a fuel pump for $875. We authorized that repair, only to be called back a few hours later and told that it didn't need a fuel pump, it was just out of gas. Now, shame on my sister for letting it run out of gas and not realizing that was the problem, but she had some extraneous things going on in her life and sometimes dumb stuff happens. And she's not a professional, they are. But Stan's was paid $140 to figure out what was wrong with the truck, and they misdiagnosed it. They charged us an extra $287 for taking the bed off to get to the tank, only to discover they had mistaken the low fuel pressure for a bad pump. I don't have a problem paying $140 for them to figure out the problem. But when they didn't bother to check something as simple as no gas...? Disappointing. I asked them to refund us the $287 for their misdiagnosis and they refused. So basically, if you take your vehicle to this shop, be prepared to pay for them to throw parts at your vehicle until the figure out what's wrong with it. If they get it on the first try, good for you, but if not, be prepared to waste a lot of money while they figure it out. Added 5-9-17: Hey Scott, awesome that you responded. And I'm not someone who doesn't understand cars, I was a certified ASE technician for Mercedes Benz for quite a few years, so I do know what I'm talking about. Contrary to your statement, pushing on the bed will slosh the tank and make gas noises IF there's fuel in the tank. I just went outside and checked it to be sure and yep, works like a charm. The baffles you're mentioning are to prevent the gas from flying from side to side or front to back when you drive, they have holes in them, which allows the gas to, you know, slosh and make noise. And I didn't blackmail you, I told you that if you decided not to refund the money, I would post a review. These guys are awesome! I started coming here because they were next door to where I work. Obviously, I was drawn by the convenience of the location, but the more I've gone the more I've become a loyal customer. These guys really take care of you. I've taken my car for an oil change there since 2013 and they've just been fantastic and go above and beyond the call of duty. I once left my car and told them I was going to be going on a road trip the following day and he did a very through check to make sure my car was ready to go. Most recently, I had a faulty sensor that they advised me I should replace when I purchased new tires in the next couple of weeks. When I went to pick up my car, the tire pressure sensor was extra "wonky." It kept flashing and beeping, which wasn't the problem I had when I had dropped of my car. When I let the guys know they went ahead and replaced the sensor and didn't charge me for it since it wasn't in that condition earlier. Other places would have just slapped on the charge and said it was already on its way to breaking. These guys are great! They are great in letting you know ahead of time of replacements or fixes you should have in the coming months/years. With other places I've been to, I feel like they purposely look for things to replace immediately in order to charge you for it. Many times not needing to replace it for another year!
