I've been wanting to try this place out for a while since they boast that they have the best phillys. Came here with some coworkers and got a cheesesteak to go but honestly wasn't impressed. The cheesesteak was spicy, which is fine, but it was spicy because there was so much black pepper in that thing. The bread was great, I love a bread with sesame seeds but I couldn't get past the fact that there was a pound of black pepper in the sandwich. I'll probably be back at some point to try something else but not in much of a rush. The service was good though. read more

We had an early dinner tonight at Stanley's. Perfect feel of a neighborhood spot. We have been thinking of going since before they even opened the restaurant. We finally made it and weren't disappointed at all. I had Stanley's Cheesesteak, exactly as described on the menu + mayo ($16) with fries ($2). Don had the same, but added mushrooms and lettuce (no onions or peppers). OMG!!! The sandwich was overflowing with meat. We both left half in the wrapper to bring home. One order of fries would have been more than enough for the two of us to share. We will know next time ... and, yes, there will be a next time. If you haven't been, I highly recommend it. We had a lovely experience at Stanley's. I had seen a recent post on Instagram about Stanley's and it piqued my curiosity immediately. I am from the Philly area and so love a good cheesesteak. I recruited some friends and off we went! Stanley's is in a cute neighborhood location. The atmosphere inside was lively. My friends and I sat in the back and all ordered Philly cheesesteaks. We also tried a slice of the tomato pie. Now, I will say this. The tomato pie is exactly what I as a northerner thought it would be. (Also the bread is delicious. That sourdough or whatever it was, is to die for. Nice chew and big bubbles.) it's NOT what my southern friends expected it to me! I was happy to finish the slice for them. The cheesesteak also was really excellent. I ate the whole thing and I'm not ashamed. We had a nice waiter who was pretty attentive. The place was popping all night. I've been living in Richmond for 3.5 years and this is the best cheesesteak I've had thus far! My partner agrees. I love that it's served on a 10" sub roll. Sometimes 6" is too small but 12" is too much. I find that an 8-10" roll is just right. The meat in of itself was seasoned so perfectly and I love the way it melded with the cheese and cherry peppers. Two cheesesteaks and one soda came to $38. That might seem high but for as much food as you're getting and the quality, we thought it was a fair price. We'll definitely be back to try other menu items! read more

We decided to stop by in a Tuesday to get takeout for dinner. My husband picked this spot because it's new and he loves Philly-style sandwiches. I think we were both under the impression that this was like a Coppola's shop, with more a takeout vibe but really, it is more of a full service bar with a small booth seating area in the back, that sells Philly sandwiches and cheesesteaks. We don't live in The Fan so I guess if I walked by there first it would have been obvious, but alas, we walked in. The menu is not extensive. A few salads and sandwiches. We ordered two cold sandwiches to go at the bar. The bartender put a bill in a bill holder you get at sit down restaurants and then hovered around as my husband was signing the slip. I believe he wanted a 20% tip for taking our order, but when he saw he didn't get that, I feel like they took extra long to bring out our sandwiches. In fact, a guy walked in way after us, sat at the bar and ordered a cheesesteak and beer and got his before we did! We waited a good half an hour for two cold sandwiches and baby bag of Ruffles potato chips. Paid $35+ for them. So if we had tipped 20% that's like $20 each for a cold sandwich. Lord, no. The sandwiches were just ok. Nothing spectacular at all. I got the South Philly Special, which had way too much mayo and all contents falling out of it. I had to stuff stuff back in it for a decent photo. Just plain messy and we were just disappointed. If you've ever been to Grazie Grazie in DC (from the folks who did Taylor Gourmet), that was the quality we expected from Stanley's and Grazie Grazie is cheaper in more high rent area, so I just don't get it but we won't be back. read more

My first stop into Stanley's was a good one. My wife and I could tell the place was buzzing as we walked up to the front door. Every table and bar seat was occupied. A nice dude put our name on a waitlist and we were sat at the bar less than 5min later. The space, which I'd not been inside of since the Robin Inn days, was more or less the same just cleaned up a bit. I dig the decision of simplicity and holding onto some of the integrity of the old space. It feels "lived in" or like it's been "occupied" by them for a while. A tasteful draft list and wine selection. The draft prices are a bit steep, however. I opted for the cheesesteak for this visit. The sandwich comes out wrapped almost as if to-go, like grabbing it from a stand in Philly. It's meaty, spicy, savory, crunchy, chewy and filling in all the right ways. If you're not a fan of spice, order your philly without the spicy peppers as they do pack a manageable punch. I think I'll request no peppers on a next visit to appreciate better the meat/cheese/bread combination. The peppers all but overshadow the rest. The bread, sub rolls, were incredible. That made the sandwich in my eyes. Crispy, crunchy, soft, chewy, etc. and was the appropriate ratio to accommodate the rest of the ingredients. The bread doesn't overwhelm the rest is what I mean. Broccoli rabe on the side was delish. It's vinegary bitter, soft and crunchy goodness. Staff were friendly and welcoming. I'll be back and look forward to trying other offerings. Ordered a cheesesteak to-go and was in and out before I knew it! Staff were nice and the inside was clean and had more seating than I was expecting. Got the sub home and everything was still hot and more importantly the bread was substantial enough to not get soggy and fall apart, but not so hard that it would kill your jaw. They don't skimp on the ribeye and all of the flavors go together really nicely in my opinion. Short walk to the VMFA so if you're out and about you can take it and eat at the sculpture garden too. I have been to stanley's three times and have genuinely enjoyed the experience each time. I tend to go later in the evening so the kitchen has been out of something each visit (chicken, fries, fries + sausage) but honestly that hasn't mattered because the menu has plenty of options. My top two are the Ted Danson and the Chicken Cheesesteak. I could write a whole other post dedicated to the amazing sesame hoagie roll that all the sandwiches are served on but i'll save my breath (although very deserving of its own post!!). The drinks are fun and reasonably priced, draft options are great. The vibes are immaculate and the music is fun. Not a lot of TVs so a fun place to "unplug" and have great conversation. Live right around the corner from this place and have tried a few sandwiches (the Philly, the turkey and Italian one) The sandwiches are always CLOSE to being good but have one fatal flaw--they are literally just too salty. And I love salt. Like I'm a big salt guy. But every bite is just slightly too much and I can't do it. I try it every once in awhile hoping they toned down the salt but so far they haven't. My wife and I tried Stanley's for the first time today. We are Philadelphia transplants and although we have been gone for almost 20 years we still visit regularly including Eagles season tickets. In my experience it is virtually impossible to get a quality cheesesteak outside the 215/609 area codes. Anyplace far enough away to label it a "Philly" cheesesteak only offers disappointment. We have been in RVA for 15 years and appreciate the city's great food but miss decent pizza and cheesesteaks. (RVA has some very good pizza; Secret Squares, Christian's and RVA Woodfired Pizza to name a few. Just not certain that any are "great".) We visited Stanley's to pick up lunch and made the trek into town from the far West End. We arrived to a small line for seating and a few folks waiting for takeout. Our order was promptly taken by the bartender who was polite and efficient. We ordered one traditional cheesesteak and one chicken cheesesteak, both with Cooper Sharp. Yes, two sandwiches were $36.00, and yes, the checkout device included the now ubiquitous tip options. We thought the sandwiches worth every penny including the tip. Cheesesteaks are about the balance of cheese, meat and bread and the quality of those elements. The Stanley's versions were spot on. The roll was perfect. Soft without being delicate inside and a bit crunchy and toothsome on the outside. The meat was rich and abundant and the Cooper Sharp mixed throughout. To those who claim seeded rolls are not appropriate, I encourage you to visit Philly again soon and sample the best it has to offer. John's Roast Pork and Barklay Prime's famous $100 (now $140!) both have seeded rolls just to name a couple. Amoroso's rolls are great but not the only game in town. Seek out some rolls from Sarcone's if you are curious. We anxious to return and try more of the fare. read more

Hands down best sandwich in RVA. Came here on a Sunday night and I got the special that was a homemade beef bolognese with a Caesar salad (with fresh anchovies) and house made garlic bread. I cannot express enough how good the whole meal was. It came with a glass of red wine and was $26, an absolute steal. My partner got a chicken Philly and it was probably the best Philly I have ever tasted. Everyone here is so nice and they have a great sense of old school Italian flair within their decor. The food is amazing the staff is down to earth, it's a Philly bar " GO BIRDS", the drinks are really good and overall it's now my go to place for amazing food.
