Everything was focused on Bento Soul. On the negative side, the place is a slow. I see one review states "you can tell immediately that this is rooted in tradition, not shortcuts", although working multiple tickets is not a shortcut, it is a survival mechanism for restaurants. Guests will factor in whether or not they have an hour for a counter service restaurant and many won't come back. The service? This was fine, although you order from a kiosk, so not a huge amount of interaction with the staff. They did have someone standing outside the counter to deliver the food to waiting guests. The food? A mix of Asian and Soul, as expected, although the only real Asian part is the soul roll. Everything else is pure southern. Chicken? If I had know they had off menu pork chops. These were kind of meh, personally. Not bad, but not outstanding either. Greens? Fairly standard. Yams? Typical candied yams. Mashed Potatoes? Excellent flavor and consistency. Mac & Cheese? The star of the plate. The Soul Roll was an interesting idea, but I wish they had some different takes as I was choosing what I considered the lesser of two evils. I do appreciate the mashed potatoes and mac & cheese and would consider a side of either. If they would add some gravy, then another thumb up. Based on the hype, I feel this is a bit overrated. And I am unlikely to return if there are any lines. With two other places, only one open on weekends, and nothing else right there, I won't walk over to see if there are lines. If you are into soul food, you will likely find this a good plce to go to. A bit pricier than a diner, but the food fulfills the needs. If you are into mac & cheese, then definitely give it a try. I would avoid dinner hours.

You can tell immediately that this is the kind of place where recipes are rooted in tradition, not shortcuts. The food was flavorful, comforting, and cooked right--the kind that feels like home but still hits restaurant-quality standards. Portions were generous, seasoning was perfect (not bland, not overpowering), and every dish felt intentional. Beyond the food, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the team clearly cares about what they're building here. This place is a must-try if you love authentic soul food or just want a meal that actually satisfies. So excited to see what's next for them -- I'll definitely be back.

I got the spicy green beans and they were also tasty. The collards, what can I say, my wife could NOT stop talking about how good the collards greens were they were the first thing gone from her plate. The attempted 's squash us into the back corner of the restaurant. With barley a 12inch clearance for people to walk between two tables, when the chairs were empty and making contact with the tables. Then comes the interesting part of the experience. The waitress for the restaurant event was trying to take drink orders. I emphasize "trying" she made at least 8 trips bringing drinks most of which were incorrect. So sorry for her, she was a pleasant lady doing the best she knew how. The owner tried to assist but wasn't that far up the know how to serve customers than the waitress. The food orders were taken. After a great deal of time the orders began in shifts to appear at the tables. No more than 2 orders at a time. The waitress had no idea where the orders were to be placed. Sad because she took every individual's name when the orders were placed. The waitress finally thought all orders had been delivered. Only to discover one order had not been delivered. My girl was sitting in her place and there was no order that appeared. The waitress in a panic apologized and went searching for the order. The waitress kept appearing with drink refills and apologies. The missing order appeared about 15 minutes later with more apologies. The next panic point was the payment procedure. The owner, after we filed the complaint about the missing order agreed to giving 50% off the missing order. But had failed to mention that every order would have a 15% gratuity added to the total price. So there were gratuities left on the tables and now additional gratuities added to the check. What a mess. I will never set foot on their sticky floor again. Good food, very, very poor experience.
