Went for brunch on a Saturday. Really good food and ambiance. Everyone is friendly and overall happy in the morning sun. Good vibes. We ordered the poached eggs and the waffles with apple compote. Both were really good. Appreciate that the base version of most things is vegetarian but you can add sausages for a few extra bucks. Nice selection of breakfast type drinks that goes beyond another mid cappuccino. We had a cold brew latte and a chai latte. Service was good. Food came out quickly and staff were attentive to cleaning tables. For a Saturday brunch it was busy but not crazy to the point where you couldn't sit. Definitely had to keep an eye out on snagging a table if someone left. Overall a good experience and total cost was $60 in the end for 2 people. They just started dinner service and it's so good!!! Had the Seared Albacore Niçoise. It was perfect. The albacore was extremely tender but crispy on the edges. The roasted chiles? Incredible. All of the veggies complemented the dish and it felt very cohesive. And the vinaigrette was amazing in bringing everything together. I've been coming here for over a year and their lunch service is great as well. So excited by their dinner expansion and look forward to coming back! I have been told about this place many times, so wanted to try for a celebration lunch! The people in line were clearly regulars, and no one shared a smile. The cashier was a bit rude, and I didn't feel any warmth from the atmosphere whatsoever. I ordered the persimmon pudding ($7) and the special for my boyfriend and the trio plate with an egg for me~ was very excited! If you have limited time in Berkeley and are looking for a great tasting lunch then look no further than Standard Fare. Parking was reasonably easy, the line looked long (about 20 people) but moved quickly and the food was creative, fresh and full of flavor. We started out with a latte which was fantastic and then moved on to the Sweet Potato soup lovely with a hint of ginger (I would have like this just a little bit thicker). I had the half sandwich (Roastbeef with thinly sliced daikon radish on a focaccia bread and the house salad perfectly dressed. My wife ordered the Potato and Kale Frittata Sandwich which she loved but was quite messy. this is my new favorite lil brunch/lunch spot in the berkeley area for its farm to table menu. standard fare is perfect for when you want to grab brunch, but avoid the typical eggs, pancakes, bacon, toast, etc.. there is very limited indoor seating and a cute outdoor seating area. inside would've been fun in its own way as you get a nice view of the open kitchen behind you, but we opted to sit outside as the weather was nice. you order at the front counter inside, then take a number to your seat. your food will be brought to you, but clean-up/dish-return is on you. we ordered the hummus mezze plate, a pork and cabbage sandwich, and some sort of ricotta plate: - hummus mezze plate (9/10): we ordered this mostly because it was so dang cute. the veggies were incredibly fresh and i enjoyed the addition of turnips and fennel as they're not the most common vegetables you can find at brunch spots. the crackers were delicious, nutty, and crisp--a nice addition! a heads up that the hummus is not the thick, creamy/heavy garlic hummus you typically find at mediterranean restaurants (lighter/more chickpea-textured). - pork and cabbage sandwich (9/10): the flavor was incredible, and the cabbage and pickled(?) turnip worked beautifully with the pork (helped cut the heaviness of it). the focaccia-like bread was yummy as well. if i had to offer some form of criticism, it was a bit heavier/greasier than i would've liked. - ricotta plate (9/10): i forget what this was called exactly, but this plate featured some kind of za'atar seasoned ricotta, yellow beets, pickled turnips, a simple arugula salad over lentils, and crostini all a-top a green sauce. it was delicious, unique, and fun to eat with the various components. if i had to offer some form of criticism, it erred on the side of being a bit too salty. overall, i absolutely loved this place for the vibes aND the food. the menu is seasonal and changes frequently, so i would love to return...literally as often as possible.. would love to also try some of the sweet items the next time around. read more

We haven't been back since pre-pandemic or parenthood but BAAAABYYYYYYY!!!! There's nothing "standard" about this fare. My heart wanted the fried chicken. I had to have it. On a bed of mashed purple parsley???? Spouse got the roast pork sandwich which was the other thing I wanted. I thought we could do that thing we do sometimes where we share a bite but neither of us cared for the other's food because we were really feeling our own. He's a man of few words but he gave it high praise (said it was "good") so when I asked if he'd order it again, he said yes!! That's saying a lot because he's typically the type to want to try everything offered. Y'all. My chicken was perfect. The parsnips looked like your typical beige mash but that KALE?!? I can't tell if it was supposed to be warm or not because it was cooled down a bunch by the time we made it the mile journey home. Please eat it there. It was still wonderful and I rolled my eyes back a few times even though it was tepid so I cannot imagine it warmer. I might have to go back soon and try it out! We also split the olive cake that has poached pear on top of it (I can't remember what the other fruit is?) and it was moist, dense, and perfect with coffee after our meal. The closest description I can give is that they were waffled lace, emphasis on lace. Crispy lace. Like if you took a croissant and stripped away all the substance and just served the flaky outer crust. Not even that substantial. We should have sent it back. Were they running low on batter and decided to thin it out so as to stretch it for just one more order? It must have just barely covered the waffle pan. Then there was the dry flavorless biscuit with some sliced hard boiled eggs and a slice of yellow beet. Had to be disassembled to notice the thin layer of herbed cream cheese as said herb favor was not apparent. Had to order another order of cheesy eggs just to not walk away hungry. DISHES Their menu changes regularly but you can check online before you go. There is usually a vegetarian and meat option for things like sandwiches. RECOMMENDATIONS The two soups I've had have been so delicious, so regardless of what type of soup it is I'm now curious to try it. If there are items leftover from breakfast I wouldn't recommend ordering during lunch because it is no longer hot and fresh. SERVICE Ordering has always been pretty painless and rather quick despite having to wait in line. The last time I went they no longer offered online ordering but if/when it returns I would recommend ordering ahead if you want to cut down your wait time for the food. AMBIANCE There's outdoor seating out front you can enjoy your meal(s) at. Well the Coffee and muffin was decent, but sadly while we waited for our frittata to finish cooking, we saw the cook touch the food with her unwashed bare hands and fingers many times, then going outside, moving things around, touching the propane heaters, and then right back into the kitchen without washing her hands poking and pressing her fingers into the frittata over and over again...Yikes...It grossed us out so we had to ask for a refund and left to grab breakfast somewhere else. The open style kitchen served a helpful purpose for us today. Please just wash your hands or use gloves when handling cooked food please! The savory stuff is what you're here for. 2) The breakfast here is good, but pretty spartan on weekdays relative to weekend brunch. Most of the options, like the frittata and the egg sandwich, are served cold out of the pastry case. 3) I would advise against letting them talk you into putting an egg on your waffle.
