Great little boozer. Fantastic choice of (proper) beers, good food and a chilled out clientelle. Some good bands too.

This is probably the best cocktail bar in the north west you've never been to! Hidden away…read morealongside Wakiki on watergate street my first visit here was short lived as fashionable lateness had cost me last orders. Howevver we promptly returned the week after and immediately fell in love with the place. What an incredible experiance. First thing you notice is the size of the place. (Tiny) It genuinely feels like a hidden bar from the prohibition era with incredible decor and music that suits the Blues/Jazzy environment to perfection. Being here is like traveling back in time to the 20's when alcohol was illegal and small secret bars like these were littered across America. The theme is consistent with the menu hidden inside a book that's handed to you upon arrival. So mesmerized were we with the vibe and conversation the cocktail taste bud memories are hazy at best. (I'll leave you with a visual of the cocktails we had. One was lemon based the other strawberry based?) This is THE perfect place for those who like sophisticated conversation with your aptly aesthetic cocktails. It's not noisey, it's not busy, it's just right. Definitely worth a visit. I'll certainly be returning.

My one criticism would be that may be the music is too loud but that's that's it. They have an extensive cocktail menu however if there's something not on the menu just asked for it and you will receive. All in all, this is one of my favourite places to go in Chester

Ahh, the Grapes is your traditional village-esque pub. The clientele are true locals and although…read moreat first looked at us as though we were slightly lost, welcomed us in with open arms. (Well, she smiled when she poured my drink.) It's busy and ringing with chatter, the races on in the background. There is a community vibe about the place. Everyone seems to know each other but are more than happy to involve you in their conversation. One guy told me that he scored a hat trick against Bill Shankly in his hay day and another bloke was telling the newest joke about Rooney and the shocking state of the England team which contained a swear word. He turned to me and apologised 'sorry, love! I used a naughty word', I half expected him to tip a top hat to me and send me back on my way to a place where there is only birdsong and laughter. What a thoughtful man, but it was a funny joke! A proper place for a pint and a chat.

Neither majestic nor momentous, the Woolton Grapes (not to be confused with the Chinatown Grapes or…read morethe Mathew Street Grapes) is a pub that still oozes charm. Everyone here, from the skinhead barmaid to the Meatloaf lookalike to the coven of cackling oldies in the back corner, exudes a gentle insanity that you find it hard to resist. I've been here twice and both times were the epitome of the season they took place in. In winter, with snow blanketing the ground outside, I sat with my feet toasting by the roaring fire, discussing the situation in the Belgian Congo- either that or the new Expendables film. In summer, I sat drinking cider with the sunshine pouring through the window onto me. It's a place you can't help but feel at peace with the world in and I'd go there a lot more if the seasons occurred more regularly.
