I wanted to like Ye Cracke (called "The Crack") simply on name alone since I have the sense of humor of a 14 year old boy, but I've been there twice and won't ever be going back. It's got decent, old pub feel to it and a standard set of drinks behind the bar. Nothing special, but it's definitely a comfy place to go on a rainy night, with the warmth kept inside from the classic leaded windows. Like I said, I wanted to like it, but both times I've been there the regulars have been old, creepy, and standoffish and the staff (save for one male bartender) were completely arrogant. Hooray for you, you work at a minimum wage job in a place that someone famous may or may not have drank in. Do I sound bitter? Well, I should. And here's why: One night, while there with my BF, I accidentally left my phone behind. I didn't realize it until after BF had dropped me off, so I used another phone to call it. A girl who said she was a bartender answered and told me I could pick it up the next day as they had already closed. Ok, no problem. Then, about ten minutes later, text messages started coming in to my boyfriend and ex (who I lived with at the time) from my phone. To my boyfriend across town, the texts begged him for help, telling him my ex was hurting me. My ex then received messages about how I was doing all sorts of nasty with my boyfriend. While one guy was preparing to come fists swinging, the other's ego was slightly hurt by the cruel messages. Okay, I get it. Someone left a phone, you're drunk, mess with people. But to intentionally cause what could be a serious altercation among people you don't know? How pathetic do you have to be? Especially after you told the person you had their phone and she could pick it up. Are you stupid, too? Let's just say that the girl who took my phone was very lucky she wasn't there when I went to go pick it up.

Cosy enough in the winter and a beer garden providing a handy city centre sun trap for summer, The Crack is small and usually busy meaning that you can often find yourself striking conversations with its interesting selection of clientel. For beer connoisseurs it also has a small but regulalry changing selection of ales and ciders to choose from. It also has a decent jukebox - surely a winning element?

From the outside, the pub looks quite traditionally designed, if a little dingy, and on entering the pub you will usually be met by several groups of middle-aged men who are no doubt regulars who have been drinking there since they were old enough to buy their own pints. The people in there are generally friendly enough, but if you're looking for a place full of young people then I'd advise you to go over the road to the Birkey. However, if traditional pubs with a bit of character and a range of guest ales on draught are what you look for in a pub rather than how busy it gets of a Friday night, The Crow's Nest could be the place for you.

The downstairs interior is mainly booths with chipped formica tables and mini jukeboxes that don't work any more. There used to be a large jukebox near the stairs leading up to the function room, but I think it's been scrapped. I don't remember seeing it last time I was there, at least. The upstairs function room isn't quite so shabby, and I remember a few years ago when they held a karaoke competition up there and it was a huge success. Until I didn't win, of course. The bar offers double and triple spirits for a ridiculously low price, and also has a decent selection of bottles and draught beer. The food is typical student stuff, with chip butties and full Englishes all on the board next to the bar. A basic full English starts at £1.95, just for an idea of how cheap it actually is. The pub mainly has jukebox music but occasionally you'll find a live act on. The function room was also used to give pole dancing classes a while back, but I doubt that goes on anymore. (More's the pity). I have to say that despite its shabbiness and obvious appeal to squanderers and students, The Pilgrim holds a place close to my heart and if I lived nearer to the city centre I would aim to make it my local.

With a covered patio area at the front to boot, The Pilgrim provides a handy arena for us smokers too.

Sat just down the road…read morefrom Waterloo train station, Old Bank is a nice place to go for a few drinks or a bite to eat if you prefer pubs to bars, but also like quite a friendly and comfortable atmosphere. From the outside, the Old Bank looks pretty special as the front is tall and has quite a traditional design. Inside, there is a variety of seating and the pub makes good use of the space available to provide a comfortable drinking environment. The function room upstairs is also pretty spacious and good for hosting live music events. The food available is nothing special - the usual pub grub and nothing more - but it's worth a go if you're peckish and in there already. The drinks are reasonably priced and they offer a fairly good selection of draught beers as well as various bottled beers and spirits. A lovely pub not far from the station that offers a nice environment to go for a few drinks with friends or a bite to eat.

I don't tend to go to The Albert that much, even when there have been very few decent pub options on the Lane, it hasn't really been on the radar. There isn't much of an atmosphere here, I think that has generally got something to do with its layout of high ceiling rooms, everything feels cut off as if there is something better going on around the corner - but there never is. Creating scenarios of constantly letting your punters down will count against you in my opinion. However it does have a large beer garden, which in a leafy area like Lark Lane should be a must for more venues. The food is really not the best, standard pub food isn't really an excuse in this day and age, just stick with a pack of nuts till you venture elsewhere, God knows there are enough eateries nearby.
