If you live in Boston, are a student, and you love theatre, there is no excuse in the world for not joining StageSource. I joined initially to receive weekly updates about auditions in the area, but now I use it primarily for the ticket discounts. Here, in their words, is what you get out of a membership:
"The StageSource e-newsletters, annual auditions, group health insurance, professional development seminars, job expo, free and discount ticket offers, talent bank, and networking events support and connect our members with the theatre community. Plus, free access to The Source Online, a database of thousands of individuals and hundreds of resources."
An individual membership is $115/year for regular folk and $65/year for students (you must fax them a copy of your ID). They have different levels of membership for theatre organizations that are categorized by your maximum annual budget expenditures.
Now, for non-students, $115 *seems* like a lot of money, but take in to account that ticket prices usually run in the $30-$40 range for the cheapest seats. Remember, you get free or discounted tickets to just about every show in town (Huntington, A.R.T, American Rep., etc.). So your membership will pay for itself in free tickets after you've seen about three shows! And for students, you can spare the $65--it'll pay for itself in two shows!
And if you're looking to break into the theatre scene, then StageSource is a must. You can sign up for weekly Auditions e-mails telling you the where/when/what of the latest auditions in the Boston area. Looking for a theatre job? Sign up for their weekly Job Opportunities e-mail to learn about the available temporary, part-time, and full-time theatre jobs. And those ticket discounts I keep talking about? Make sure to sign up for the Discount Ticket Offers e-mail so you don't miss a-one.
Thank you, StageSource. You're the best thing to happen to me since that one time I had to have stage sex for a show. read more
