I started as a member of this amazingly supportive and motivating dance studio for Zumba classes…read more Little could I have imagined that just weeks later I would be embarking upon a life changing journey into dance. Having no experience with ballroom (or dancing in general really) I found myself in an unfamiliar world with lots of learning to do. The special perk was never feeling as if I was anything but meant to be a part of it all. That has nothing to do with my ability and everything to do with the unbelievable professionals of Avalon. Jess is an amazing instructor. She has a wonderful "straight to the point" attitude with an incredible ability to make the most challenging steps and moves easy to understand. Her commitment to your learning is present at every moment. And her true love of dance is literally contagious. I went from Zumba with Angela and Karen, to adding Ladies Formation class and performance with a wonderful group of women, as well as private lessons with Jess, and am now beginning to welcome the idea of taking some private lessons with Peter to become skilled at partnering/ ballroom. (Peter- have patience my courage my take some time) I can not say enough about just how much this studio has contributed to building confidence and joy into my life. Although I am challenged to learn and grow as a newibie, I feel am more able to express myself physically through movement and have truly fallen in love with dance. This is because of the wonderful environment and the amazing support and welcoming energy of Jess and Peter as well as the dedicated dancers I have met there. In less than a year I have quickly gone from trying out a Zumba class on a whim to a dedicated "lifer." So amazing. I look forward to every class and my future as part of this special studio and team of pros. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, Randi

The basic ballroom dance class is an amazing value. For under $10, a beginner can learn salsa,…read morerhumba, tango, waltz, etc., from award-winning instructors. Jess can teach anyone to dance and dance well with more than a few laughs along the way. Peter's old world British charm transforms the studio into a welcoming space where you immediately feel comfortable. Who needs to dance with the stars when Avalon Dance and Fitness is right down the road.

Three-floored community with a variety of dance classes. Came here on a Saturday for an impromptu…read moreSamba dance class at 1:30pm. It's just one stop away on the red line from Harvard, so it's a convenient option for students. It's $15 for the samba class, but they'll take cash and credit card. There's a Santander right across the street if you need an ATM, since some of the classes are cash only. Note for Bank of America cardholders, there is a $3 ATM fee. There is a gender neutral bathroom available The 1:30-3pm Samba class was super fun. It was my first time doing Samba, but the teacher was super energetic and there are plenty of other beginners so you don't have to feel awkward. You can put your stuff on the right hand side along the wall, and there's plenty of mirror space so you can watch yourself shake it. There were people of all ages and it was good vibes all around. It started with a warm up and then payment, and then the actual Samba class. There was even a live band that played while we danced. At the end, there was a dance circle and everyone left sweaty but happy. The dance center overall is a cool spot and you can try out a number of different dance styles and classes no matter what age you are. I noticed on the bulletin board they have kid classes as well.

My main complaint about this studio is that they don't have air conditioning, so taking class…read moreduring the summer when Boston temperatures are in the 80s and 90s can be extremely unpleasant and tower fans are just not sufficient. It can be uncomfortable just to be standing in that kind of weather, let alone doing cardio for an hour plus. Honestly, this seems irresponsible to me, and I'm confused by the fact that they don't seem to be concerned about heat stroke. There are definitely days when the only reason I don't go to class is because there's no AC. I also wish they had contemporary classes (they have one "contemporary modern" once a week, which is not the same as contemporary).

The dancers were super professional, dressed elegantly, and really breathed life into the song that the orchestra (hired from a separate company) played. I paid a flat rate per dancer, which included the performance and 50 minutes of rehearsal time before the proposal to give the dancers a chance to rehearse with the orchestra since they had not worked together before; Urbanity Dance was worth every penny and then some! The final performance was exactly what I had envisioned, and I especially appreciated that the dancer who performed last (Joy) finished her solo with a "lyrical invitation" for my partner and I to follow her to the predetermined proposal spot - this aligned perfectly with the music as it was fading out, and allowed for perfect photography/videography coverage - plus the two of us were in such a daze as everything was happening that we definitely needed the clear guidance Joy provided. Big big thank you to my POC, Cayley, and each of the dancers who made this possible: Genny, Katie, Haley, and Joy.
