Charles River Ballet Academy is a gem! It offers serious, classical ballet training in a fun,…read morewelcoming and supportive environment. My son (8) and daughter (12) have both danced with CRBA since age 3 and love it! My daughter now attends multiple days a week and is advancing in her ballet training, technique and pointe work. The teachers continue to challenge her and help her take pride in her progress. My son loves learning about different ballets and working with his classmates to choreograph pieces together. Both of my kids always come out so happy from their ballet classes. CRBA puts on an impressive Workshop Performance each year where students perform costumed and on stage. My daughter has also enjoyed performing in CRBA's annual Choreography Workshop. I would definitely recommend this ballet school for little ones just starting out to serious dancers who want to advance their training. The adult classes are fun too!

I came here for almost 10 years as a child, so granted, my review is reflective of my experience…read more at WCDA from almost 20 years ago (woah! time goes by fast). However, it appears that the studio is still run and owned by Robin. I have the most amazing memories from my time at WCDA, and for that I'm extremely grateful. I remember that the instructors were so kind, the studio itself was beautiful and in a great location, and the recitals were organized and well-produced. I praise WCDA for instilling a sense of positive self-esteem in their students and providing such a sacred space for creative self-expression. I'll never forget the pure joy and excitement I felt on the day prior to our recitals that they hung up the photos of our dance recital costumes we'd be wearing. So many sequins!

Aparna focuses on teaching the fundamentals with a strong emphasis on proper form and use of the body, as well as the aesthetics of Mysore style Bharata Natyam, an expressive and gentle form of this dance style. She sings the accompaniment herself and customizes group classes to suit multiple levels of students. Having studied with larger dance schools (Indian dance and others), I really appreciate the personal attention. I also study Kalari Payattu at the same school with Anil Natyaveda. This is a Keralan (the Southernmost state in India) martial art that combines intense workouts with various types of martial training. If you're looking for a martial arts challenge or a way to build upon yoga - this is it. Anil is a patient teacher with similarly strong emphasis on proper and safe movement fundamentals building into ever more complex combinations. The two forms together have greatly enhanced my dance skills with better body control, expressiveness, endurance and attention to detail. The school also supports Mohini Attam, and Kathakali upon request.

Group and Private classes are also conducted. She travels to other places (out of Boston) to perform dance, this weekend there is a show at New York (01-10-2009). Group classes cost $60 and private classes costs otherwise. She is such an encouraging and a soft spoken person. Twenty years in, and after a substantial hiatus due to a job that wouldn't let me get to this…read morestudio in time for class, I'm back here. These instructors, and these classes, are fantastic. I love how everybody here is friendly, supportive - but also won't coddle you along if you're just stuck in a rut of self-pity. The beginner class is usually divided into four sections: 1. warm up, where you actually stretch out just about every part of your body. Great if you've been sitting at a desk all day. 2. basics, where you work on some basic aspect of kicking, punching, or stances. 3. forms, where you do what would be kata in standard karate; this is my favorite part. The class usually splits into several groups at this point, depending on experience. There's almost always at least one or two beginners in the back working on Long Fist I, so don't worry if you don't know what you're doing - you're not alone! 4. self-defense, where you work on drills to deal with things like wrist grabs, punches, and kicks. I have *used* these (alas) twice, and in both cases, the hours of drilling I did took over while my brain was locked up. Instructors Mark, Karen, and Jonathan are fantastic, and I was classmates with Instructors Melissa and Jason until I had to drop out. They're terrific people, and there is none of the "buy-a-belt, learn to master the soooper seeeekrit martial arts" vibe I've gotten from other dojos. You sweat, and you learn, and everybody's supportive of that. They are also supportive of the fact that people may come in with pre-existing conditions, and will not make you do the idiotic "push through the pain" thing when you're actually hurting yourself. (I've had teachers who did this, and am very grateful not to be putting up with that anymore.)

For adults, they meet you where you are in terms of fitness and knowledge, from absolute beginners to students who been practicing for years, and they then figure out how you can improve from there. For the kids, I have never seen a team of instructors invest such attention and care to every child in every class and then achieve success through positive encouragement. I've been a student myself for over ten years, as has my child, and I'm still learning and growing. Can't recommend highly enough!
