I have visited this opera house before for other Broadway shows and have always enjoyed where I sit. The ushers do a nice job getting us to our correct seat placement and it is always easy to hear and see what is happening in the shows. This visit I saw Beauty and the Beast and I loved the music and the bar cup scene, the dancing and the other special effects during the play.

My absolutely favorite Boston theater! I usually try to catch 3-4 plays a year as Boston in Broadway brings some amazing productions to our city. My most recent play was Some Like It Hot and it was a fantastic play. The music, the choreography, the performers were fantastic. Another fun and memorable night out at the Opera House.

We came here on our trip to Boston to catch a rendition of the Whiz. The show was highly entertaining. The Citizens Opera House where we watched the Whiz was a fairly suitable venue to enjoy a performance. The seats are comfortable. The architecture of the space are esthetically pleasing. The staff was professional and courteous. Everyone filled in a timely and orderly manner. They even managed to sneak in late comers to the show without a lot of disruption to the performance.

I went to see the Nutcracker ballet which was an amazing show. They had paid bag check for $8 per item and many ushers directing people to their seats. The bathrooms were very busy before the show so I'd recommend going to the one downstairs with a lot of stalls. The performance was was magical especially the large amount of snow that fell

I am a frequent flyer to Boston's Citizens Opera House - and might I say this is hands down the best theatre in the city. The interior is absolutely beautiful, and coming here is definitely a treat. Lately, I have seen Swan Lake of the Boston Ballet and Michael Jackson of Broadway. Absolutely incredible performances, the performers really swept me off my feet. MJ was life changing, so much young talent and it really shows. You get everything from acting, singing, and dancing. I have also seen a few other ballets including the Nutcracker, and a few magic shows here. Opera House is always packed with people, but the staff does an incredible job here controlling the flow and ushering. Additionally, the women's restroom line may look scary during intermission, but it moves really efficiently. Prior to the shows, I always like visiting the concession bar and grabbing a soda and a pack of M&M's. They serve drinks over the rocks which is fantastic for a show. Transportation wise, the area is surprisingly easy to get an Uber in. There are plenty of adjacent streets that are accessible. Additionally, the theatre is conveniently located walking distance near three MBTA lines. You can get the green/red/orange lines from either Park St or DTX. I absolutely recommend visiting this beautiful theatre if you get the chance, they offer a variety of fun, well-known shows here.

We saw the Swan Lake here and it was a magical experience. I reviewed the actual performance separately :) The architecture of the building is in short, stunning. The seats are placed nicely and staggered enough so everyone can see. They serve a good amount of drinks for concessions. I suppose if I had one nit it would be - some of the audience members were disruptive (noisy, holding up phones and recording, etc.) and I do wish the staff had done more to regulate this.

One word: WOW. I just saw Swan Lake this past weekend and it's insane how easy everyone makes ballet look. It is not easy. Extreme athleticism and precision, with some outfit changes and cool effects like the smoke on the floor when they were swans rising up from the ground. The main swan dancer (Viktorina Kapitonova) is PHENOMENAL. Jaw dropping watching her in her element. Outstanding production. Also the Citizens Opera House has nailed the bathroom situation with a staff inside yelling out all the open stalls. Even if it looks like there's a long line, it'll move very quick!

Broadway in Boston - opening night for wiz, all black cast adaption of wizard of oz. The cast was amazing and the theater is beautiful as well. Be sure to come early to grab drinks and take some pictures ahead of show!

Absolutely gorgeous theatre! Seeing a beautiful show in a beautiful setting never disappoints. I was in a limited view seat, but still had a fantastic time. The ushers were attentive and very helpful about finding seats and providing information. There is one bathroom area in the basement which can be a hassle to get to at intermission, but the line moves quickly

i saw some like it hot on tour here and had a great time! i sat far back center balcony and the view was surprisingly good, and considering i scored $11 tickets i'm really not complaining. had to sit a little awkwardly just to see past the people in front of me, but when they left (interesting story) it was pretty much fully clear. accessibility options are great, i got a headset and the audio was super clear. it's close to chinatown so there's lots of meal options to do dinner and a show, but if you're seeing an evening show eat beforehand because most places will be closed when you come out. the legroom wasn't bad either!

Seeing a show at the Opera House is a must while in Boston! Came here for Les Miserables and had a fun night. The opera house itself is beautiful from the lobby to the theater. It's very picturesque and I suggest looking around the different rooms and areas to take in all the beauty. They serve drinks and sell merch for each show which is cool. The shows are top notch as it's Boston's Broadway so expect to be wowed. I've seen a couple of shows here from Anastasia to Phantom of the Opera and it's always a very professional production. Our seats were Orchestra Right, Row P and we were very close to the stage. Only thing was since we were off to the side, some parts of the stage was obstructed. However I'd rather be closer and have this as being in the balcony is very far and the actors look so tiny making it harder to see. All in all a fun night out! Bonus: accessible by the MBTA

While it is difficult to match the quality of New York's theatre experience, the Boston Opera House comes pretty darn close. The theatre itself is absolutely stunning, gorgeous period appropriate decor, but tastefully restored and modernized, as needed. Recent traveling performances, included Les Miserables and Hamilton were spectacular. The staff does their best to keep security moving and handling the crowds through the tight lobby. Two complaints: 1) For Les Mis, the staff did not enforce the seating hold. Audience members were given ample notice that the show would start promptly at 7:30pm. Inexplicably, the ushers continued to seat late arrivals until nearly 8:00pm. Our view of the prologue was blocked by ushers and patrons walking in late and using their cell phone flashlights. Very distracting and in very poor taste. 2) While no fault of the theatre, the lack of etiquette by some patrons was appalling. People using Apple watches, cell phones ringing, etc. during the performance was so rude. I wish the ushers would have removed these people at intermission.

Beautiful venue! We went to see the Nutcracker and the staff were fantastic... helpful with locating our seating and keeping the restroom flowing. Snacks, water, beverages, and souvenirs available for purchase. There are no water refilling stations on the second floor so be prepared to take a little walk or purchase if you need any. Parking is reasonably close and a discount code is available for the garage.

Are their any type of refreshments available before/after the show? Also is there a gift shop type place? Have never been before.

What's better - To be in the front row of Orchestra Left Box or row J of Orchestra left (not in the side box)? Any idea about how bad the obstructed view really is? Thanks!

Not sure, we sat in the balcony way back

I'm planning to go see the love never dies in February and this is my first time going. Want to know what seats are the best view. You think orchestra center left is the best seat to see or mezzanine?

For viewing (I mostly watch ballet) I prefer mezzanine. For sound, I like center backwards better but seating isn't the most comfortable.

    What is the dress code?

It depends what you're going to see and the time of the day. With that said, you will often see a variety of attire. Many are dressed formally and some casual.

I'm looking at attending Wicked with my son (age 5); which seats would be better, left orchestra towards the front, or box seats? How many rows are in the box seats--I can't tell from the reviews? Right orchestra further back is also an option.

Orchestra front. Many times box seems fancy and exclusive but the angle is all wrong.… Read more

We expected a "seated" audience, but as soon as the band took the stage, the entire audience remained on their feet swaying and enjoying the music and vibes. While I enjoyed this environment, I can see that elderly attendees, shorter patrons, or those with difficulty standing for 2+ hours might have been disappointed. The experience of getting tickets at…read morethe box office leaves a lot to be desired, though, so I'd suggest considering whether you want to brave the box office or just pay the extra fees to order online. In today's box office experience, I showed up during the normal box office hours, but the ticket window facing the outside of the building was curtained off, the door to the building was locked, and the inside box office door (which I could see through the transparent building door) was closed. I called the box office and they let me in, but maybe some clarifying signage (along the lines of "yes, we are open") would be useful. When I asked about purchasing a specific pair of tickets, the person in the box office initially stated there were no seats available in the row where I requested seats, although I could see seat availability showing up in my phone app. After we looked at the phone app together so I could better understand the discrepancy, they did confirm that the seats the app was showing were available and booked tickets for those seats. I also had quite a difficult time using a promotion for $25 tickets they had emailed me. First the person in the box office said that the promotion only applied to the seats that are always $25 dollars (although the promotion email said "all seats"), then they said the promotion had expired (although the promotion email said it was valid through midnight today), then they said that the promotion only applied to some show dates (although the promotion email said it applied to "all performances"). After we looked at the email together to try to sort through these differences, they let me book according to the terms in the email.

The seating however is always raised, and the theater cozy, so seats with a bad view are highly unlikely. One thing that I think was new this season is that they've taken to decorating the waiting area for each performance, which I find to be great fun. Refreshments purchased at the concessions stand are allowed into the theater. One thing I notice that they make sure to tell the audience before every show - they love their subscribers. Blocks of seats are saved for their subscribers, and I think that they also get free parking. This theater is an easy walk from the Central Square T, and is located on the same block as Mary Chung's. *** 8/2011 *** With the new season they've changed from open seating to assigned seating. So buy your tickets early for a better selection of seats. The theater gets chilly sometimes, so consider bringing a sweater. *** 10/2012 *** Validation tickets for the University Park @ MIT Garage - 55 Franklin Street are available to all CST patrons at the Will Call Counter for parking after 5pm on weekdays and all day on weekends for a max of 5 hours. Parking for $5? Nice! PS - they sell a soda pop sweetened with cane sugar here - I recommend the cherry. *** 11/2013 *** 2013-2014 is the 3rd season that the Central Square Theater is playing "Arabian Nights" based on "One Thousand and One Nights." I highly recommend going to see it - it is terrific and I've seen it both seasons prior and am scheduled to watch it this December also. For Black Friday through Cyber Monday, the tickets are $35 (vs up to $61), or 4-Play Subscriptions (peak) are $100 (vs $163 regular price). *** 8/2014 *** For those with little ones, Central Square Theater has begun offering a Date Night with optional childcare ($20 for the first child aged 6 and up, $5 for any additional children) for specific nights. The kids get to watch a movie, while the parents enjoy the show. Something else new was a pre-show MicroTheater performance of "Othella" which began in the stairwell and headed into the lobby. Theater, right in your face. It was cool. It was scheduled to accompany the performance of "Her Aching Heart" as part of their Central Conversations series of discussions and special events. *** 12/2015 *** The fifth and final run of the holiday special "Arabian Nights." See it while you can! This season CST no longer decorated the lobby area specific to each show, but you can still enjoy whiling away the time till the theater doors open, relaxing at one of a number of small tables or checking out the framed photos of past shows hanging on the wall. They sell snacks and drinks that can be taken with you into the theater - I highly recommend the oatmeal cookies. But my beloved cherry soda is no longer available here, as they've changed brands. I loved how they wove together the tales of the Little Match Girl and the Happy Prince in "Matchless & The Happy Prince." I admit it - I got a bit teary eyed at one point. *** 12/2016 *** CST has changed their restrooms to be All Gender shared restrooms as they believe that everyone should have a safe place to use the bathroom. What does that mean? It means anyone can choose to visit either of their previously labeled Men's and Ladies' restrooms. It also means that if will make you feel safe, you may ask a staff member to accompany you to the restroom. What I didn't like was how you could peek in (and out) of the stalls through the gaps around the door - well, no more! They've installed privacy covers which makes your going private from accidental eyes.

Don't get me wrong, this is still a great theater, but it is my least favorite of the three... especially in the summer. No, nothing to do with A/C, but to do with the seating! The benches they have can be terrifically uncomfortable for long-term sitting (you know, like the kind you do at the orchestra. The cushions are cushiony enough, no compaints there... it is the backs of these things that get quite fidgety! I don't really know how to describe them other than to say: they aren't really flat. What does this have to do with winter? Well, when it's cold you have have a puffy jacket to serve as a makeshift pillow of sorts. Now that this needlessly long rant is over... I like how the seating is in a semicircle around the stage. What I like about this is your head won't be turned 70° for the entirety of the show. While if you are sitting at one of the ends (on the second floor, at least) you won't see the whole stage... this is typical of halls like this. Also, since The Blue Man Group does not perform here, it is not as important. Acoustically, since I am not an audiophile I can't comment in much detail. However, the hall being semi-circular and smaller gives the sound a little more "oomph" than a larger hall. Architecture is pleasant. It is not quite as extravagant as an Opera theater, but not a nondescript space by any means. Enough to get you looking around a bit before the show. Also, the deep wood tones add that "establishment" feeling that help you feel the age and institution of Harvard, and all that preceded whatever performance or lecture you have come to see. I was also a fan of the large room (hall?) that is the lobby. A great place to do a little mingling and walking about after the show or during an intermission. A few concluding notes: * While there is an elevator to the washrooms, I don't think the balcony levels are accessible. * Bathroom situation is not great. They are kept clean, certainly. Only there can be lines, especially lengthy for the ladies'.
