I love the old school inns and especially their dining rooms! Stopped by for lunch and went into a dining room complete with white tablecloths and a silver pitcher of coffee and creamer placed on our table when we ordered coffee. We'd never heard of chilled cherry soup. Unique and delicious. We were offered a taste, since it is not everyone's favorite, but we really liked it. The view was beautiful, looking across beautiful gardens and green lawn onto Lake Michigan. We stayed elsewhere, but were very happy we made the stop for lunch. A stop at Stafford's Bay View Inn in Petoskey, Michigan in a "must" when in the area. Set on the shores of Lake Michigan, the Victorian era property is gorgeous. A long row on Adirondack chairs facing the Bay offers a beautiful view of the water--and inside is well-taken care of and filled with antiques. We learned the same family, the Stafford's, have run the hotel since the early 1960s, and it is obvious they have meticulously and lovingly cared for the hotel. Since we were only passing through Petoskey on a coastal road trip from the Upper Peninsula, we only stopped for lunch. Lunch ended up being Sunday Brunch. Normally, we are not buffet diners, but the Bay View Inn's brunch buffet was delicious and service friendly and attentive. We definitely would go back--but next time, also stay a few nights. read more

Our favorite inn in Michigan. At Staffords you are treated like family (thanks Corey, Stacy, Bobbie Jo and Ethan). Around the holidays trees pop up throughout the inn with various themes. Ditto for bunnies at Easter. The many fireplaces, quiet books, comfy library and other spaces make it a welcoming retreat in all four seasons. The restaurant has great food (thank you Chefs Richard, Laura and Freddie) and offers lovely views of the bay. We prefer the bayside rooms as they are quieter (and because of the views). We especially like rooms 7, 16 and 32. The mattresses are made locally and you can call ahead to request that housekeeping flip to the firm or softer side before arrival. Lovely old historic B n B inn , just outside a cute small town.The overpriced rate you pay is for the history, lovely grounds and views of the water (if your room is on the bay side), ambience, and service, Wifi and Breakfast included. Restaurant on premises - closed on Tuesdays. They have done a great job updating the old inn, but imho it's overpriced. Accommodations: 3/5 Rooms are quaint and small with old heat and ac. Four Rooms have a small balcony (8x12 ?) with 2 chairs and a small table -with nice breezes and a view of the bay, for a small extra fee. One had a sunbrella. Beds are vintage. Parking lot is adequate. For the price , the owners could update air conditioning, so there would be no dirty water puddles outside the rooms (see photos.) from dripping of ac units. Showers lack a hand bar for seniors and impaired visitors. Dining rooms are 4/5 -antiques and colorful. One large tv and multiple games in game room. . Service :5/5 Ethan and Elizabeth at reception were very helpful. Dining room service was good and quick; servers were pleasant and efficient . Complimentary breakfast is served until 1 pm. Location 5/5 Very pleasant grounds with lots of flowers in the summer; nice walking trails adjacent along the shore behind the inn. About a mile and a half away is the cute, boutique-heavy downtown Petoskey and the beach where you can find ancient Petoskey rocks, left in the bay from the glacier era. On the other side of the bay is Harbor Springs and within half an hour is the beautiful Walloon Lake area. read more

From the moment we walked in the door we where treated like royalty. All the staff where absolutley amazing in every way. The hotel definitely feels like grandma's house, old style, fresh cookies on your bed everyday, amazing food. We stayed for a few days for a wedding on the property and it was breathtaking. Stacy the wedding planner did an amazing job! I'd definitely make this your wedding destination, weekend get away, etc. There is a library on the second floor that had a tv, games, books, free coffee and hot coco, water, ice, card games, and lots of seating :) The sunroom is a perfect place to read the morning paper and just relax! Pros- staff where amazing (shout out to Cassie and Ethan for being absolutely amazing and helping us!), beautiful rooms, views, great food, clean, old timey feel, restaurant, library, comfy pillows. Cons- no TVs in the rooms (but that isn't a huge deal) We also found out that since we stayed at Staffords we can go to any of their locations and use the amenities for free! read more

We began our Upper Pennisula trip with 2 nights at this lovely Inn. We stayed Saturday and Sunday. The Inn was recommend to us and we greatly enjoyed our stay. The decor, location, landscaping, staff, food, view ect. Its all 5! It had the look and feel of the nicest b&b but has several modern comforts. There is an old elevator but its small and need to open 2 doors so would be tricky if alone in wheelchair. No phone or tv in rooms but that was ok. The ac gets as cold as i like which is RARE. The bathroom had a loud exhaust fan which i prefer, a nightlight and heat light. Room was quiet, lovely and every day 2 complimentary huge delish cookie left on bed.. omg. They gave discount coupons for breakfast and brunch. Food was very good.! Lemonade, coffee, tea and ice tea complimentary. Quant common room, wraparound porch and beautiful flowegarden. Easy walk to water access / beach. Unfortunately didnt see the discount coupons for Mackinac island ferrys until we had already returned. We Stayed here Saturday and Sunday. Brunch was best ever. Come for brunch whether you stay here or not. Soooo delish. In fact we both said best brunch EVER. What a lovely Inn right on the water. whether your looking for a lovely quiet place to relax, a romantic get away or a peaceful place start your Upper Peninsula trip .. this a great choice. This was 30-45 minutes from the Big Mack bridge to the Upper P. We went on a day trip to Mackinac Island on our second day and came back. Drove down town both nights to see the sunset at the harbor with the lighthouse. Unfortunately didnt see the discount coupons for Mackinac island ferrys until we had already returned. We drove up here from southern Ohio and stopped here .. stayed 2 nights to begin our Upper Peninsula trip. We had this town recommended to us and the whole town was great... cozy and cute. read more

An extremely clean, well maintained old hotel. Location, about a five minute drive from downtown. The staff was all more than willing to help with anything. Room I had was street side -so a little noisy. Upon check in received a voucher for $25 breakfast food. Shared a veggie omelette, with sausage egg, American fries dish. Both were good, not great. Waitress, friendly and always attentive. Free soda and water available 24 hours a day ! Hot chocolate- coffee available on 2nd floor in a library. Was told no two rooms are identical. read more

Terrific spot for a quiet, romantic excursion. I was quite pleased with my recent stay at this lovely B & B. My husband and I spent a long holiday weekend here recently and were quite happy with the overall look and feel of the place. Pretty much everything about our stay here was top notch. We haven't traditionally done the B & B thing that often, but when we have, we've had high expectations and we were not at all disappointed during this trip. Our room was a tad on the smallish size, just a regular room with a street side view, not a suite, but is was comfortably appointed and looked super adorable. The bed was comfortable, the furnishings and antiques were cute and the bathroom was not only much larger than I expected, but had obviously been remodeled recently. Everything about it was great, right down to the fresh-baked cookies left on our bed every morning by housekeeping (by the way, they were delicious and the desk clerk gave me the recipe, yippee). Heck, I even liked the purple floral wallpaper with a vintage feel that adorned our hotel room. The only hiccup seemed to be the water pressure in our bathroom. It took awhile for the hot water in the shower to heat up to my preferred temperature. Other than that, everything was great. The towels were super fluffy and thick, of a higher quality than your average mid-price motel/hotel (a la Days Inn, Super 8, Quality Inn) and bedding was crisp and new. Even the lighting in bathroom was decent and that almost never happens in a hotel! Every area in the hotel looked so cute and seemed extremely clean. I have to give kudos to the cleaning staff because they did an impeccable job. Our room was one of the cleanest we've ever had at any hotel upon check in. It almost seemed like they must have been doing the "white glove" test or something to ensure every surface passed muster. As a B & B, they only had two TVs in the place, in the sun room and the library, both of which were often occupied by dudes who had to watch sports, but we didn't care about that and didn't mind not seeing much TV over the holiday weekend. We just watched movies at night on our IPhones, so who cares? There were two fireplaces in the lobby and sun room downstairs and one upstairs in the library, giving the inn a cozy feel. If you don't appreciate white wicker furniture or the shabby chic look, you might not love the style, but I thought it was comfortable and in keeping with the theme of a historic hotel. The best words to describe the feel of the place are "elegant," "timeless" and "charming." We both enjoyed the cocktails on the gorgeous porch (alcoholic beverages weren't allowed past the porch and quiet time outside was expected after 10 p.m.) while watching the sun go down every evening. Like I said, the view was unrivaled and was a major selling point for both of us. Seriously, the view from the inn was just amazing. We walked down to the shore from the inn and looked for Petoskey Stones, snapping photos along the way, every single evening. The walk to the shore was super short, just down the driveway and through a small, but lovely garden, complete with benches and old-fashioned swings. Keep in mind, this is a historic hotel. It's old, the building is from the nineteenth century (it was known as Howard House originally), so the floors do slope a bit in places and the the Wi-Fi signal is wonky in certain areas, but our experience here was nothing short of incredible. We had a great time and loved the old world charm of this lovely B & B and the history behind it. The location was great, the views onto Little Traverse Bay were unrivaled and the hospitality was beyond reproach. It was precisely what a good B & B experience is supposed to be. It definitely made for a nice, romantic trip for two. If you're looking for a relaxing, romantic excursion, this quiet little B & B would definitely do the trick. Next time we go up to the Bay View/Petoskey area, we will definitely be making a return trip to Staffords. We both thought it was a great value for the money. It was more expensive than staying at a regular hotel, but absolutely was worth the extra $. read more

Although it was a rainy day we stopped for lunch in this beautiful old style hotel. As we walked in there were two elderly couples playing scrabble on the large Veranda sipping their drinks. Inside lots of Victorian looking wallpapered walls and white furniture and banisters. It reminded me of a "Miss Marple" setting. The restaurant had beautiful views. Our lunch menu was quite small but the food was excellent. All of those with me raved about the cream of mushroom soup which was definitely home made. I have hesitated at making a review here but it is important. I absolutely loved the staff at this inn. They were very professional and on point with every guests' need. My complaints are physical and for $300 plus a night, those should be improved. The food here is not worth the money at all. I saw the food service truck unload behind my room and that gave away the allure of a homemade style meal and put it into commercial food status. Don't eat here. The major complaint on the room I had was the bed itself. The mattress was very hard and had no pillow topper. I stayed in a cheap motel after this and it had a better quality mattress by far. I am a Smith and a life long Methodist. This hotel should have been a perfect match for me historically but being cheap doesn't help your guests at all. I felt like Mr Stafford Smith and wanted to take over the inn. Maybe one day..... read more

Well. what can I say? The Bay View Inn experience was much more than what I could ever expect from a B&B! Christine and Bobbi Jo were just fantastic to Joe and I. We have never been treated as well as we we were at the Bay View Inn! I believe the most wonderful aspect of the inn is the staff--from Corey and Ethan to Mallory, Sarah and Tom. Our great housekeeper was also wonderful, even though I never learned her name--thank you for the cookies each night! The inn was so lovely, both inside and out! The sunroom and the wraparound porch were our favorites, besides the quaint bar where we would have a nightly cocktail (or two!) or a bottle of wine to share with Dr. Mike, another guest, made expertly by Bobbi Jo or Sarah (or Mallory!) We had only planned on staying one night on our way to the U.P., however when we came back through Petoskey after our 2 days up north, we could not resist booking 2 more nights at the Bay View Inn. Now to one of my most favorite things at the inn--NO tvs in the rooms! There were 2 tvs in the common rooms, the sun room and the library (another of my favorite places!) and we didn not miss them one bit! the bed in our room was so comfortable, we would just fall into bed and pass out for the night (could be due to the wine, also!) I just loved the whole historic atmosphere also, being the oldest inn north of Grand Rapids( 1886), built one year before the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island---I just had this feeling the whole stay that my mother had stayed there for the summers when she was a teenager. She had allergies and hay fever, so my grandparents would send her to Petoskey starting around 1936. Maybe she didnt, but I am just going with it! Staffords Bay View Inn is right on Lake Michigan in beautiful Petoskey, Michigan. The sign outside says breakfast, lunch, and dinner M-Saturday. I was there around 2 p.m. on Sunday. I was a little scared that they weren't serving anything, but was pleasantly pleased that brunch was available. What a beautiful brunch we had! The food was so fresh and delicious. You can tell that the eggs were so very fresh - probably the hens just laid them that morning! If you wanted pancakes or omelets there was a chef making them fresh for you. They had a meat carver ready to cut up whatever type of fresh meat you wanted. The waiters were johnny on the spot as far as freshening up your coffee and/or water. I was in a party of 7 and we had absolutely no reservation and did not have to wait at all to be seated. They sat us near the buffet table so we didn't even have to go far for the food! They had breakfast items, lunch items, dinner items, and to top it all off they had dessert items as well. The decor was impeccable. Clean and very classy! They had tablecloths, fresh flowers on all the tables, cloth napkins - very beautiful set-up. We were not rushed at all. Afterwards we went out to the porch and took some pictures and sat on the rocking chairs and took in the view of Lake Michigan and all its beauty. The grounds were beautiful as well with all fresh flowers all over. Parking was very convenient and no problem. Definitely would recommend this place if you do take the 4.5-5 hour drive up north. Staffords Bay View Inn is 5 Stars all the way. I was there on a weekend retreat with my sister and fellow yelper, Debbie Z. We were awed by the beauty of the Inn which was located right on Lake Michigan in Petoskey. The Sunday Buffet was the best I've ever seen. Check out the pictures I uploaded. There was plenty of choices for breakfast, and/or dinner. Everything was fresh, fresh, fresh and tasted wonderful. My neices and nephews were with us, 7 total, and we didn't have to wait to be seated. Our server was Nate. He was incredible and funny. Loved him. After we ate we went out to sit and that fantastic porch with a lake view. We were served complimentary soft drinks while we basked in perfection. We met a couple from Clinton Township who have been making the 5 hrs drive every year for 16 years just to go to Staffords Bay View Inn. One of my facebook friends informed me that she knows a couple who go up to Petoskey every single year just for the Sunday brunch at Staffords Bay View Inn. My rating was either going to be four or five stars based on the decor, bedrooms, view, staff, use of gift certificates, and food. Most categories I would give it four and a few five starts, therefore, I'll give them 4.5 rating. Lets start with the gift certificate. I had a certificate (not gift card) dating back seven years ago, given to me by a friend. I didn't think they would honor it, but after speaking to the manager, he gladly accepted it. I thought it was great customer service. I initially thought it was going to be a small bed and breakfast, but to find it to be much bigger as a hotel. It's an old hotel dating back to probably 1800-1900s. The view from the porch or a small walk to their garden or beach is spectacular of the bay. It's perfect for a sunset. That morning, we had breakfast in their restaurant and we started with their sticky bun cinnamon roll. I thought it was a good start. It would have been nice if it were heated up, but it was okay. I moved onto the Michigan Cherry French Toast. It was much better than the sticky bun. It did have enough cinnamon and cherries to give it a nice balance of flavor and texture. One of the staff members even played a game with my little cousin while we waited for our food! I have NOTHING negative to say about the restaurant. This review is strictly for their restaurant. *3.5 stars* We had made reservations and arrived right on time. No one was at the host/ess stand. So we waited and waited. Finally a gentleman comes and takes us to a table. After asking about 3 times how many is in our party (um, don't you have our reservation?). Anyreservs...once we were sat, we noticed the absolutely gorgeous view of the lake from inside! Really so lovely. The menu is somewhat impressive, lots of interesting things on it. We started with a bottle of wine and the baked brie with fruit and crackers. Really enjoyed this, but then again I'm a whore for good cheese. They also have this dill/garlic bread they bring out and for lack of a better phrase...made by the angels above. If I were stranded on a desert island, I would want that to be my only nourishment. For dinner I ordered the perch with veggies and rice pilaf. Veggies were a little overcooked, but the perch was delicious. BF had the whitefish with roasted new potatoes and veggies. Very much liked his. MOL had ordered their fish special literally when we sat down. Of course no one else was ready to order, so we asked the waiter to come back. When we were all finally ready to order, he asked her what she wanted. She goes "I already told you what I wanted", he looked at her like she had 3 heads. The service was ok. He tried real hard. Forgot a few things here and there, but overall nice guy and all that. The food is delicious and tasted very fresh. The inside looks like a 18th century hotel. Awful green carpet and the wallpaper is just hideous. HOWEVER....it gives it character and I actually really enjoyed the interior design of this small northern bed and breakfast. I can't speak for the hotel, but the brunch just isn't what it used to be. You can expect to pay ~$120 for 4 people. While the view of the bay is nice, you may have to trek through the dining room to get to the buffet. The plates are small so you may need to make several trips. The desserts for the most part look like they were purchased at Costco and there may or may not be glasses available when you want some punch. The eggs benedict used to be great, but the ones I had today were disappointing. The english muffin was burnt, the eggs slightly undercooked and the hollandaise was runny and tasteless. This wouldn't be such a crime, but I just paid $30 for brunch. Short of the freshly, hand-carved, ham, there isn't anything about this buffet that stands out. Find a different spot for brunch and get your money's worth. read more

If you get the chance to come here for brunch, take it, do not hesitate. We came on a holiday (Easter), and although very crowded, we had a reservation so it worked out. If you can wait, the later seatings are less crowded (2:30/3:00), I think they were wrapping up when we left around 3:45 or so. I don't know for certain. I had a bit of everything. Turkey, good if a little dry, maybe the late seating was the cause, great when you added cranberry sauce though. You might more traditionally associate that food combo with Thanksgiving, but I appreciated it because I do not partake in the other carved meats they had on offer, lamb and ham. The baked goods, omg. Yummy sticky buns, and yes, definitely should be enjoyed while warm. Mini-Belgian waffle, w/ raspberry jam and whipped cream was excellent. The blintzes had blueberry cream cheese in them, also excellent. The fruit was plentiful and tasty as well. I also had some scrambled eggs, potatoes, asparagus, some chicken and fish. The chicken was in a morel & leek cream sauce, very nice indeed. The whitefish was in a sauce w/ capers, top notch. Their asparagus had this sauce with some kind of citrus zest in it, all other asparagus may disappoint me from now on. My mom loved the eggs benedict, and most of the stuff mentioned above. The food was pretty rich, you'll waddle out of there if you do not pace yourself. The view wasn't bad either, you can see Little Traverse Bay from the sides. This location is a doable walk from downtown Petosky (around 2 mi), and it'll make you feel less guilty for stuffing your face. Highly recommend. I couldn't do it more than once a year, no self control ya know. Ha. About 25$ p/p, before drinks and tip. Another nice thing, you can order drinks while you are waiting on the sun porch. There were only a few people in the restaurant but they said they needed a few minutes to set up a table for our party. About 20-25 minutes later our table was finally set! So, not a great start. Ordering and service was slow. They gave us sticky buns while we waited but they were very dry and seemed like they were from a day or 2 before. I got the veggie quiche and could taste none of the basil and feta it was supposed to contain but could taste only the overpowering flavor of mealy, frozen asparagus. After waiting almost 1.5 hrs at that point, I was so hungry that this almost made me cry. It was accompanied by fruit that was primarily melons with about 4 grapes and a strawberry. The buttermilk pancake wasn't amazing but it's the only thing I would eat again. My husband got the ham and cheese omelet. The eggs were hard and overlooked and was FILLED with cubed ham that did not taste great. Others at our table were satisfied with the country hash and the French toast, so maybe try those. Bottom line: only go here if you want a nice view, are not super hungry and don't care too much about the taste of your food. read more

The place is an institution in the area, and the flagship of the Stafford's restaurant chain. For a while they had a Friday night BBQ ayce dinner out in the patio which was to die for, I'm not sure if it's still available. It's a relaxing place, with a fantastic Sunday brunch, with top notch fixins, I highly recommend it. About the only complaint I have ever had here was an absolutely horrible server who ignored everyone while pimping for a big tip from an older obviously well off couple. After emailing the corporation with my complaints, they emailed me a gift voucher toward another meal. A totally case act, and really not unexpected gesture, as the Stafford's corporation wants to provide top notch service to it's customers in the traditional northern Michigan manner. read more

We stayed here for a weekend in October (Friday to Sunday). We really enjoyed the place! It was warm and inviting. The staff were very helpful and friendly too. Yummy cookies every morning after the room was cleaned, and they had coffee, tea and hot chocolate available for whenever you'd want something warm to drink. The room was a small room that faced the street with no balcony. The room had a heater/ac available. The bathroom was very nice and they had toiletries available. There are a couple common areas in the building that are very nice and cozy. Wifi available which was nice, we used that in our room since there are no tvs. There's also a nice front porch that looks out towards the lake as well as some Adirondack chairs on the lawn that face the lake too. We had Sunday brunch on our last morning there and it was nice. Good food and many options to choose from. Overall, we loved it and will definitely go back for another visit and stay! read more

I had my wedding at Staffords - they are absolutely amazing! If you like a more ecletic style for your hotel and don't mind rooms without tvs, I highly recommend this beautiful location. As for the wedding service, the staff is super knowledgeable about meeting planning and supportive and excited for events (even after they had at least one hundred before yours.) The food's alright - try the beef if you have a chance. All in all - Staffords has wonderful local flair, friendly staff and a calm atmosphere. read more

My wife and I stayed here for a night and wish it could have been longer. From the moment we stepped in we felt like the most important people. The front desk person Stacey was amazing and super nice. Great recommendations and made was always willing to help. The rest of the staff was also really nice. From there the room was nice and comfy with a couple of delicious cookies waiting on the bed. While many might not like the TV in the room I thought it was a nice touch. There are 2 TV's that are community which are in nice areas. Also they have free bikes (first come, first serve) This was especially great for the wife and I as we used them all day and didn't use the car after we got here. The location is great as it's right outside of downtown and not to far from Petoskey state Park. Finally the grounds are perfect and the huge porch is a great touch. This has been the best stay of our lives! We stayed here for four days for our honeymoon. The staff are particularly friendly, they work tirelessly to make sure everything is perfect. One such staff member I have to mention by name. Ethan, whose last name I do not know, but he works at the front desk! He was such a big help during our stay. He always had suggestions for us on what to do and where to eat when we asked, and always asked us how our trip was. On our third night there, he turned the whole place upside down just to find my new wife some chocolate. I can not give enough praise to this gentleman. He truly helped make this a stay we will remember. And if we are ever staying in Petoskey, I will stay nowhere else but here. Our stay was really that pleasant. I would recommend this place to family and friends. The atmosphere here is pleasant and they have lots of wonderful places to be outside. Along with bikes for you to borrow (at no additional charge) and umbrellas for you if it's raining. All the rooms are better than any Hotel I've stayed in, which is a lot due to how much I travel for work. If you want a nice quiet room, with a friendly staff, this is the place! Staff was snotty, food was marginal. Portion size was ridiculously small! The chicken I had could not have been 2 oz. About half the size of a deck of cards. Maybe 1/4 cup of vegetables, which were overcooked and very mushy. Everything was bland. Desert tasted like cake out of a box. I expected more for the very large amount of money we paid. What a gem! This hotel is a blast from the past. The walls are covered in old timey wall paper and the rooms are very simple. No TVs- just a bed and bathroom, but the room is very clean and perfect for a relaxing get away. Upon walking into the room there are 2 homemade cookies on the bed, and let me tell you they are amazing! The room cost also included a $25 breakfast voucher. Breakfast is served in a room that overlooks the lake and the food is very good. The staff at the Staffords Bay View Inn are so friendly and great to work with. If we ever end up in the area again this would be my first choice in accommodations! read more

Came here for brunch on a sunday with stsyi n g in the Bay View community and buffet was superb. They had quite the selection and the ingredients were top notch quality. Even had a turkey and ham carving station, along with homemade waffle station. The dessert buffet was just as good with huge variety. Can't wait to come back next week read more

Sunday brunch was good, a little pricey. Nice window seat outlooking the grassy area and water. Average age of members was 40+ LOTS of elderly people. Breakfast had large variety, and good bread. One of the only places for Sunday Brunch I believe in this area. Parking a little tough out front. read more

Great place to stay. Breakfast is very good. You will have a $25 credit when staying there. No TV in room. Get a room on the Bay side. (no road noise) It will cost you more but if you treasure your sleep, it is well worth it. We have stayed there for years and love it especially when there are limited amount of noisy kids. MOST people who stay there are smart enough to be considerate of others, and keep their kids under control. read more
