No frills...simple and clean room. The bathroom was a little outdated and some of the fixtures need repair, but they were functional. The staff was friendly, the shower water was hot, fridge worked and the heater didn't make a racket. I was right near a stairway exit so that was the only noisy part of this hotel. I sure would like something to be added to these doors so they don't constantly slam when someone opens them...that would be a real crowd pleaser for anyone that stays near these doors. I don't write reviews unless it was a major disappointment or an excellent experience. I called the property before booking to ensure they had a ground floor room nearby an entranceway to accommodate my physical limitations, and I was assured they did. When I got there, I spoke to the girl and asked her if she remembered talking to me she indicated she did. I asked her where the ice machine was, and she sent me down the hallway about half the distance of the hotel. Ice machine was broken with a sign on it. She assigned me a room and had me park far away from an entrance, and I had to walk the entire length of the hotel. When I called and asked for an accommodation to leave the next day, i.e. a wheelchair assist, I was told it couldn't happen for another half hour to 45 minutes. You couldn't open the balcony sliding door because it was broken. There was a stain on the carpet, ( looked like blood) And the room was stuffy and couldn't be properly regulated for heat or cool. The reservation attended was extremely RUDE to us upon check in. We have a registered support animal. We were interrogated about why we have him. The attended interrogated us about our support animal so we cancelled and stayed somewhere else! How sad that this behavior exists. Our dog is registered and has a license. We are Best Western Members and the quality of the room was sub-par. The room price was $189 on Thursday and weekends were over $300....the bedding, linens, shower curtain old and not clean. My friends and I got a great deal on this hotel through an outside vacation service. So, that's why we chose to stay there. However, when I checked us all in... they did put the actual nightly rate on my receipt... so, I was able to see how much a normal nightly rate cost... $300. WHAT?! There is no waaaaaaaaaaay this hotel is worth that much. I would say it's worth between $100 to $150 per night. Here are just some things that could have improved... -The entire hotel needs a face lift. It's very outdated. -The beds were the WORST. All 4 of us got horrible sleep the entire time we were there. The beds just aren't comfortable... they're really stiff and hard. -The shower head was very leaky. -If you're not on the top floor... you will hear people walking around on the floors above you. -The breakfast was not good... my friend got some biscuits and gravy... and when she brought it back to the room, and took a bite... it was still frozen on the inside. -And then the worst part... when we checked into our room... there was a packet of cigarettes out on the balcony. This really made me upset because my husband struggles with addiction and this was a huge trigger for him. So, I was VERY upset about this. With so many hotels to stay at in Petoskey... I will not stay at this hotel again, and I will not recommend it to anyone traveling to Petoskey. read more

My husband and I really like this place. We love the hot tub. When we went recently the hot tub heater had stopped working. The desk clerk, Chris, was so super nice. She tried with maintenance to get it fixed, but when they said it wouldn't be until the next day before it heated up, she was nice enough to put us in a Jacuzzi room for the night. We just had to move a couple rooms down. It was super awesome of her to do. Also the breakfast is pretty good. We like the big ole waffles. Both rooms we were in were very clean. Horrible- the place is not secure- told us room was on second floor. It was on the ground. Anyone could walk right up and jump over balcony.Note: you can see the room on the picture and it is on the ground. Screen door lock was broken. We asked for different room and were told "all rooms are signed into" However vacancy sign was on and people were still checking in. told clerk and was told "most screen door locks are broken" and they would tell mgr. Bright balcony lights on all night, drapes did not close, and the light glared onto bed. Nasty loud ac blasted right onto face in bed. Waterpipes very loud all night. Rooms are not sound proof. WE could hear "bed thumping" above us. Desk clerk and dinning room attended seemed to hate anyone who bothered them by being there. We filled complaint with Expedia, we filled complaint with Best Western and credit card company. Manager lied about lock on door . NOthing but the runaround. We will continue to pursue our complaint in hopes of getting refund for this horrible experience.. The only good things are the breakfast buffet and the nice housekeeping ladies. We stayed for a night here, price was reasonable compared to other hotels around the area. Clean spacious double queen room. First impression though was not good, the lower level by the elevator 2 has a stench, besides the smell of cigarettes from people smoking by the door, it seems that the garbage can by the elevator had something spilled in it and dried up and wasn't rinse. We were not really sure exactly what the smell was and where was it coming from, but the stench always greets you as you get on and off the lower level. So much to recommend this hotel. It's a great value. The rooms are very large with some unexpected extras for a hotel in this price category....Large bathroom with lots of nice toiletries . Comfy bed with great pillows. The staff was warm and inviting. I was travelling with two small dogs and the "no pet fee" was very much appreciated. But all the "pet rooms" are on the first floor and I was looking forward to enjoying the lovely lawn area shown in the photos. Unfortunately, there were literally HUNDREDS of cigarette butts littering the outdoor area...really disappointing. The hotel IS dated in the lobby and common areas. But it's still warm and inviting in an "old fashioned" way. Clean up that outdoor area and I'll add another star! read more

This is probably such an underrated hotel. When we first pulled up I saw the sign and said to my husband "oh no, this place looks so dated and the parking lot is so empty." We proceeded to check-in and were greeted with a warm welcome from Steven. The hallways were clean as we proceeded to our room. The room itself was very spacious and it was an added unexpected bonus to have a balcony facing the bay (all rooms have this). The room was clean and had all the amenities we needed to make our stay comfortable (towels, soaps/lotions, microwave, fridge, etc.). The view of the bay is spectacular from the 4th floor (where we were) and made it a great evening activity to sit out and watch the sunset. The Apple Tree Inn is a great location. It is about a mile from downtown Petoskey and very close to the State Park as well. It was perfect for getting around to all the places we needed to go during our stay. They do offer some sort of free limo service. I cannot comment on this as we did not use it. The complimentary breakfast is basic. They offer waffles, cereal, eggs, yogurt, fruit, coffee, juice, and an assortment of pastries (bread, bagels, muffins, and danishes). Perfect for a quick and free (well, included in your room cost) breakfast. They also have a pool, hot tub, and fitness center. We did not use these, but they do look nice and clean. All reviews led us to a stay at Apple Tree Inn. While it was quiet and had a nice view of the beautiful harbor, it had a not so nice odor. Shower was hot yet had no liner. While every aspect of our stay was 'okay', the Inn seemed a bit worn and dated. While it wasn't horrible, our expectations based on reviews, were higher. The pictures reflect a newly renovated hotel...a long time ago. The hotel is run down, dirty and it smells. The carpets are stained and dusty. It's the kind of room where you don't want to touch anything. We literally checked for bed bugs (found none thankfully). We left first thing in the morning without showering. We just wanted out. Room rates seem to be at the whim of the clerk checking you in - shame on us for not googling multiple sites. We paid $258 for a queen room, $279 for a queen "suite'. Today - one day later - I see rates of $129 for the same room. Check in was delayed until after 5pm due to limited maintenance staff. The hall carpets were horribly dirty. Wow! My wife found this while planning our vacation to Charlevoix and nearby Beaver Island (MI), and what a great find it was. A charming hotel with great hosts and very comfy rooms, we couldn't have been happier even if we'd paid more $. We knew we'd be arriving VERY late and called to let them know; they stayed late (the office normally closes at 11pm) to welcome us, and never rushed the check-in process, taking time to give us a number of maps and guides for the area, and answering our questions about locally-owned non-touristy restaurants. We stayed up a bit after we got to our room to decompress from the long drive from the Chicago area (including a stop of several hours along the way to see a friend). The best testament to the quality of the beds and quiet rooms is that we slept until after 10am! We are here two nights; if our next accommodations in Charlevoix could be canceled, we'd like to stay a third night. Rooms include a mini-frig and microwave, coffee pot, balcony. The entire site is non-smoking. We had a "king" room. The place was very clean. We opted to hang up our towels so they'd not be needlessly swapped after a single use (if you put them on the floor they are changed out). Daily hours are 7:30am-11:00pm. Indoor pool is open 8:00am-10:30pm. Complimentary breakfast is 7:00am-10:00am (cocoa, juice, tea, coffee, danish pastries, muffins, Belgian waffles, cereal, oatmeal and bagels). Local sights to see: Legs Inn in Cross Village for a great meal (specialty: Polish cuisine) via a meandering, windey, beautiful drive, http://www.legsinn.com/. The food was out of this world! Stop along the way to Cross Village at some of the pulloffs to get your feet wet in Lake Michigan (and see the swans in a few places). I recently stayed here for 5 nights. Not by my own choice. My apartment was being remodeled and this was where they arranged for us to stay. Well anyways my friend called the night before to see how early we could check in the next day. The employee who answered the phone was well aware I needed a pet friendly room and that it was already in the system and it was even in the system that I had a cat. When I got there Monday morning the lady I checked in with was very rude. All she said was yeah to everything I said. And when I said I had a cat she rudely said "They didn't tell me it was a cat!" And then goes on to even more rudely say "Cats destroy more things" I told her I have a scratch pad for my cat. She just kinda rolled her eyes and gave me a look like whatever. And so if you are not accepting of cats you should NOT be calling yourself a PET friendly hotel!! My cat destroyed NOTHING!! Not only that but people with pets shouldn't be punished to the bottom floor. My cat has bad anxiety and we were placed in the room right by the door where most people entered and exited. And it practically shared a wall with the elevator. AND it sounded like a herd of stampeding elephants was upstairs constantly EVERY minute of EVERY day! So like I said don't call yourself a pet friendly hotel if you don't want cats there. Most cats behave better than dogs. And if you don't want to lose business you should treat customers better. It was not my choice to come there and it was not my cat's choice to have to come with me. We were sent out of our home for the short time and we should have been treated with respect! oh and the sheets are not cleaned properly between pepole. Stains. If you want a hot shower or bath, do NOT stay here! The ambient room temperature was warmer than the 'hot' water coming from the shower & tub. There was some sort of construction work with loud machinery that started literally out side of my hotel room door at 8:00am. The workers were yelling casual conversation over the noise of their equipment. The tv remote did not work at all, so we were unable to lower the volume nor change the channels on the tv even by hand. The only option was not tv, or watching screaming children shooting gooey bright paint at each other at each other while the child audience cheered & also screamed. I had been house sitting in Petoskey while my sister was out of town & her home flooded. I needed a place to take the kids & pets to stay. We moved after one night. The front desk person was friendly. He did warn me to not smoke in the room or on the patio (although there was a back of cigarette butts all over the ground off the patio area). The rooms were clean & comfortable. The breakfast was good with many options including the 'make your own waffles'. The pool & hot tub are were nice. Maybe you just have to consider the hot tub as being your hot bath of the night here? Bring ear plugs in case they decided to work on a project outside your door. Use Netflix on your computer instead of tv entertainment after your cold shower. Enjoy! read more

My co-worker and her daughter and I stopped along the way to Boyne Mountain wanting something close by and affordable and somehow found this gem. Absolutely adorable it has a super warm and comfortable little eatery/lobby area when you enter. I have a small obsession with fireplaces and when we came down for breakfast the fireplace was lit and the Olympics playing on the television. They have a VHS library for guests to use in their rooms which adds a tinge of old school nostalgia and general enjoyment, as who doesn't like to relax to Disney or even SPEED. :) The complimentary breakfast comes with the usual dry cereal, waffles, bagels, toast, muffins, and a Keurig. That's right they have a Keurig. Not just boring coffee but fun flavors that everyone can enjoy. They recycle waffle mix cups which makes the environmentalist in me happy and they keep it very clean. Now about the rooms. They are very homely and cabin feeling and the view of the lake from the room is cute. They also have little balconies and they offer HBO int he rooms. The bathrooms are the right size and they offer a nice washcloth display of hair-net, make-up remover and soaps. Keep in mind this isn't a hotel this is in an Inn and as far as Inn's go it definitely takes the pie. The water pressure is great (surprisingly so) and gets super hot. They offer plenty in towels and the pool area is absolutely great. Very well kept and good temperature. They offer a nice computer area and workout area and have free wi-fi. (Don't forget the Username and Password are on your key card envelope) All in all this place was amazingly affordable and super cute. I couldn't stop aw-ing. Just remember and keep in mind that this is an INN. It's cabiny and homey and not over the top lavish. Now book your stay and get ready for an absolutely lovely time. read more

I originally posted a review with 5 stars and I will leave that review below. A few days since coming home I had bites all over my sides, on both sides. It was later confirmed-bed bug bites. They can show up, up to 10 days later. This was 3 days. I called and spoke to Everett at the front desk, I politely told him the story and he was EXTREMELY rude saying this was impossible and then he asked for my phone number and hung up on me. I assumed he was telling management and I would hear back. 48 hours later, I called back and again EVERETT answered and said he told management but what else do I want to hear? I told him I didn't appreciate how he was speaking to me and I just thought the hotel should know-I wasn't expecting nor did I want any compensation or even an apology but maybe some polite customer service and just accountability or at least to go and check the room and call back. I felt as a hotel they should have called me back after I complained. He was one of the rudest customer service experiences I have ever had and I can not believe it his tone with me. He was acting annoyed and didn't want to deal with the phone call. I'm really disappointed I was so happy with our stay here at the hotel. I felt that the room was very clean, the whirl pool in the middle of the room was a fun touch! The balcony was huge, nice view and having a fridge and microwave was a nice addition. It was not a large hotel and had many entry ways which made it easy to come and go. The complimentary breakfast was enjoyable, bagels, hardboiled eggs, cereals, and waffles. This place offered a free limo to any place downtown and it was so much fun! We also were given casino vouchers. $5 food and $5 gambling-per person. My husband and I go to Petoskey a few times a year to visit his family. We have never stayed at Apple Tree Inn. I thought it looked nice enough, so why not try it out? The bed frame broke when I sat on the bed. I called the front desk and we were moved to a different room. When the front desk worker came up to give us the new room key she said something like "It's strange that the last people that stayed in this room didn't say anything about the bed being broken." Was she implying that I actually broke the bed and lied to her? Or am I just paranoid? So....that was weird. I was very sick the next day. I had some sort of migraine. I was up all night puking and ended up having to go to the ER since I couldn't keep anything down and had become dehydrated. I could barely walk on my own to the elevator and I looked like hell. The housekeeper witnessed this! Still, we get a phone call saying that we had a dog in our room and now they're going to charge us to clean it. EXCUSE ME?!?! I had called the day before our reservation to see if we would be able to have our dog in the room. They said no because they have ground floor rooms for pets and they were not available. That's fine. The dog stayed at grandma's. The dog didn't even set foot on the parking lot!! Besides, my dog is tiny and doesn't smell like vomit! The AmericInn next door is MUCH nicer and the staff is not a bunch of accusatory A-holes. read more

My mom and I find this is a convenient place to stay during our "girls only" getaways up north. Located close to beaches, shops and the casino - you can't go wrong. The price is always right and the rooms are always clean. They also have casino vouchers available. You get one pack per guest. The vouchers are good for $5 in free play and a discounted breakfast or lunch buffet. The rooms are extremely quiet and most rooms have a decent view of the Bay. Both the customer service and cleanliness are questionable. If you are looking for a great view, you may not get "spectacular views that are the envy of Petoskey" (per the website) especially if you have a room located on a lower level. You *can* see the bay even from the lowest level, if that's all you're looking for, though. General summary: -dirty jacuzzi tub -untreated water with iron in it -poor "customer service" from two front desk people -poor website design Customer service: There technically is no acting manager who handles customer issues when the front desk cannot handle the problem. The front desk must get approval from the owners (who didn't seem very responsive) if he actually chooses to handle the situation. Turned out to be quite time consuming "adventure" that I will pass up next time I'm ever in the area. Cleanliness: I would be especially wary if you have a room with a jacuzzi tub. Technically the room wasn't ready at check-in time - tub hadn't been cleaned in who knows how long. I didn't notice initially, but while the jets were spraying, it loosened an orange substance presumably from the tub. It was pretty disgusting. Website: Automatic e-mail confirmation is a pretty standard and simple task if you've ever done web development. I shouldn't have even kept the reservation knowing their website doesn't work properly. I didn't received the promised automatic e-mail confirmation after reserving a room directly on their website. I had to call and confirm the reservation and their employee had to manually send it. More details: Called front desk around 9 pm and Channing, who was working that night said nothing could be done until 9 am the next day (when the cleaning crew and manager were supposed to be in). Jacuzzi rooms are more expensive and we were paying more for something that is dirty that can't be used. She said she didn't know if we could get a discount for the poorly cleaned tub that couldn't be cleaned until the next morning. Check-out is at 11 am. I explained this to her and she still didn't seem to care. I guess she thought about it. So, a bit later, she called and had someone clean it at around 10-10:30 pm. Cleaning fluids smell takes time to dissipate. So, we couldn't even use it that night. That doesn't really help us be able to use the tub, but at least something was done about it sooner rather than later. But it gets better... Next morning Renee was at the front desk. She indicated that the manager (technically a sales and advertising manager) might not come in. She also indicated that Channing didn't do her job (customer service) and the orange substance is "iron..." since they don't get water from the city. Her attitude was that there was basically nothing wrong on the part of the hotel... although unfortunate that Channing didn't inform us properly. We made a decision not to use the jacuzzi tub based on what their employee had (not) told us, so we didn't fully enjoy the tub. At this point it seemed that they fully intended us to pay the full amount of ~$120+tax. Iron deposits in water doesn't equate to safe water. There's a reason that cities treat their water. Treating costs money and unless there is a net positive benefit/cost ratio, I don't think we would be treating water for minerals like iron. The owners apparently decided not to treat the water.... Even if the iron infested water is completely safe, it still wasn't cleaned out properly. Renee suggested that we had used it before and this caused an iron build up. I tested the tub after it had been cleaned out, and one soaking doesn't cause rings of substance to form along the inside edge. It also doesn't cause an orange substance to appear when the jets were running after one use.... Not once did anyone apologize for this in a somewhat believable manner and Renee's attitude (which I am not going into) certainly didn't help. Ended up with a 10% discount but it wasn't worth the amount of time and unpleasant interactions upon deaf ears that it took. The second cleaning person was the most professional. read more

We stayed 3 nights, Wasn't too bad until a couple of us woke up with bug bits all over our legs and arms. I checked reviews for past problems with bed bugs, but none reported. I read this place use to allow pets, maybe was thinking maybe flees. Flees are hard to get rid of because the long life stages. It was the biggest hassle dealing with our luggage and clothing upon arriving home. read more

Had a family emergency, and had to cancel and called 2 days early to cancel. Apparently we called 4 hrs after the deadline and they charged us one night stay on our credit card. Our room rate was $99 and they charged us $197. After a month of trying to get in touch with someone, Marjoree Forbes "Manager" called and said it would be adjusted...but it never was. They will not call you back, and will ignore your emails. I finally got a hold of the so called manager Marjoree after months of phone messages and emails. She told me that were charged the $197 because I called " The night before arrival to cancel"....WTF? I said I called 2 days early, and that in that case I shouldn't be charged any fee. Then she looked it up and guess what....I did call 2 days early. But, Marjoree said that I called 4 hours late, and that she would have to charge me a fee. Finally after going back and forth, she realized that , DUH "We charged you to much...we are sorry" She already knew that and was supposed to credit us months ago. I explained to her what our family emergency was and asked again if she would just waive they fee, since we were only 4 hours late on the deadline. She said no, she didn't care, but it was ok for her to ignore calls, charge us the wrong amount and even give us wrong information on why we were charged a fee. I was very upset because of the way we were treated and on top of it the family emergency we had to deal with. Instead of trying to make a customer happy, they ignored phone calls, ignored emails, and try to charge us more, hoping we wouldn't catch it. I have asked and asked for Marjoree's supervisors name,email or even phone number and she continues to ignore my emails and never sent me any of the info....I have also asked for the hotel owners contact information and she again ignored emails asking for the information. Maybe she is scared to have me tell them what is going on? To put the icing on the cake...Marjoree sends me an email saying that my credit card will be credited for the right amount, but doesn't provide any of of the contact information I requested....but she does put a stupid =) , smiling face at the end of the email. I think she is a 13 year old girl running the place to send me a stupid smiling face after the hell they put us through. Good luck to anyone trying to get any type of customer service if you reserve a room and something goes wrong. They could care less about anything other than taking your money. read more

We had a very nice stay here in April. The customer service was excellent, our room was very clean, and the free ride to the casino in a limo was a hoot. I do agree with a previous review, in that the chlorine level in the hot tub was so high that it stings your eyes. Aside from that, very clean pool & hot tub area. I would prefer towels be available in the pool area, instead of at desk. We also ran into the issue of rooms being open with cold air blowing through. Probably unavoidable, but chilly if passing after the pool. Breakfast was ample, and tasty. Overall, we were impressed with the unique charm of the Apple Tree. We will be back. read more

I made a on line reservations for a Sunday night. Within 12 hours I had a unexpected family emergency and had to cancel my one night stay. I called the hotel and was told no refunds. They charged the entire amount of room. The hotel was Not sold out , as web page still showed rooms available. It was not a holiday or festival week. I just feel they could of been more understanding, even giving me a credit for a later stay, or charge a cancellation fee, not the whole amount within only 12 hours. Man on the phone was very rude. STAY AWAY!!! Absolutely the worst customer service! Pool had so much chlorine that our eyes were burning after 10 minutes of just being in the pool room!! Workers were painting on our floor- left ALL the hallway windows WIDE open and it was barely above freezing!! My son & I were moved up to the Holiday Inn at 10pm the first night!! I was furious! They didn't even offer us a free nights stay for our troubles! They're ridiculous!! Don't waste your money! I'd sleep in my car before going there again! YUCK!! read more

I would never stay here again. The one thing that you do get is a spectacular view of the sunset on the lake but the front desk service was aweful. One woman was on her phone the whole time and she didn't have the excuse of being a teenager. I asked for a ride in the limo they get and they simply said it doesn't run till four, good service would have said it more politely and helped me find a cab or something. Then they told us we had to get out a day earlier than we planned. We had our voucher and proof of reservation or we would have been out. Front desk service can make or break a stay. read more

Nice place to stay when in Petoskey, MI. Beds were comfortable and staff friendly. We enjoyed our stay here.

My husband and I booked a room at The Apple Tree Inn for our 10th anniversary. I actually found a Groupon offer for the room, so took advantage of that. When we arrived there, we were greeted by a wonderful woman at the front desk, she was gracious and welcoming. We walked into our room and it was spotless and very neat. We had a king whirlpool room, and the layout of the room was great, and the tub was gleaming. There was a nice jar of bath salts for the whirlpool, which was a welcomed surprise. We had a small refrigerator, a small microwave as well as a small bar sink in addition to the bathroom sink. There was a nice indoor swimming pool, a whirlpool, a fitness center and a business center as well. A continental breakfast is offered in the morning, and they also have a waffle maker with a great selection of toppings. The Inn was centrally located to shopping, restaurants and had a beautiful view of the bay. There are many wineries in the local area that offer tastings, which was awesome. All in all, we both really enjoyed our stay at The Apple Tree Inn and when we go back to Petoskey in the summer months to bicycle, we will definitely stay there again! read more

Location is ideal. However, this hotel is tired, tired, tired. The toilet area is so tiny it was ridiculous. Please, eliminate the Jacuzzi and build a proper bathroom. The tub takes up so much space that could be used so much better. The "breakfast" isn't worth eating. Only protein is a hard-boiled egg. And there's not enough room for the guests. Balcony overlooks the lake and the chairs are kept clean and dry to enjoy the view. Our contact with the staff was minimal but they were friendly and helpful. This hotel is a winter gem. For around a hundred dollars we got a whirlpool room. Room had a fridge and microwave. Pool was clean and a nice temp, though it might be small in peak months. Hot tub was nice. Rooms a bit outdated but well maintained. Rooms have a VCR, which might be a great thing if you're stuck in bad weather with kids. Summer pricing is steep. I would really struggle to pay the $330 they ask for a summer weekend night. $200 would make this hotel four stars in summer. read more
