I never ate there but I went several time for a late after dinner drink.... yes.. out of the bubble (Amsterdam) :) This place is in an old castle right in the center of Utrecht facing the main canal. Really a great setting. They have any kind of drinks but go for the home brewed beer... light, fresh and very very yummy. The ambiance is quite homey and there is also a big fireplace. I absolutely love this beer and even though I'm a professed lightweight when it comes to drinking, and hardly go beyond a second glass, I would for this beer. It's just the absolute perfect white beer. Jum. Oh, did I tell you about their bitterballen? No? Order them! They come with proper stone ground mustard and are delicious combined with the above-mentioned beer. For those of you who prefer quiet over people-watching (or aapjes-kijken as we say in Dutch) the outside terrace is continued down the stairs at the level of the canal in summer. Had been to Utrecht on one of those bright Sunny days! This is an old Town Castle coverted into a restaurant! It is a chandelier, folded napkins and quite space above. When u walk downstairs through their vaults brewing beer, you come out in the open to the wharfs below by the canals! Totally charming and amazing service! read more

Only really saw the cavernous downstairs area which was a bit cramped and loud. They brew their own beers, which are the only beers they serve. I recommend them. Upstairs has a larger hall. read more

Utrecht old town is full of little places along the canals where you can drink a beer and enjoy a meal. We found this one based on nothing much more than the fact that the preponderance of patrons appeared to be Dutch rather than tourists. We had their house-made beer, which we liked enough to order a second round, and since that was so nice we opted to eat here, too. The pot of mussels was lovely, and they even did a credible job with spare ribs. Pricing is fair, too, and the service was friendly. read more

While the real draws are the setting and beer the food was quite good. Seating on the terrace is first-come-first-served. Through encouragement from the waitress I tried the mussels, and I'm glad I did. Since they are cooked in a white beer, in place of wine, they had quite a lot of flavor. My wife had the chicken with garlic and rosemary, which was also rather good. Overall I felt like we were winning in the price/quality ratio. read more

Went here with my boyfriend when we saw the good reviews. Ordered drinks when we were seated inside, but then were ignored by the waiters in the area for over an hour. Everyone around us was served, so I'm not sure if we were ignored because we were American or because we were young. Decided to leave instead of staying for dinner.Just disappointed that we couldn't try the food because the service was so bad. read more

If you want to sit down and be ignored by the 2 cavalier waitresses of which one watched us leave after 20 minutes of waiting and serving other people, than this is the place for you. Seemed like someone should be managing the place, but couldn't find anyone to let them know. Went across canal to Quignon - great food and quick service although not on Canal - it's filthy anyway plus lots of smokers - yuk. read more

One of my favourite places in Utrecht. The interior is of course awesome - its a bar in a city castle! Nice beers, which are home-brewed, good food. I especially like the spareribs aaaaand salmon salad with horseradish dressing. Dinner menu is also quite good. And in summer there's a terrace:) read more
