This place opened in 1619. It's small with some inside and outside seating. The one bartender did a great job of taking care of all of us. He even took the time to explain what we were drinking. We initially thought we were going to get gin, but Genevere is just similar to gin. This is meant to be sipped with a side of beer. We decided on trying the two year Genevere, but they also have some older ones. The liquor was smooth and considered easy sipping. No need to mix it with anything It was interesting to hear their history. The governors of Amsterdam have all be drawn on bottles displayed in a cabinet. read more

We had a wonderful time visiting this place. Our most recent and honestly only other Jenever experience was at wynand focknick where they have every flavor known to mankind. The bartender looked at me like I had ten heads when I asked what flavors they have (my infantile palate) because they do not have any flavors. They do, however, have a wide variety of unflavored Jenever and I threw a dart into the dark and ordered the 6 year one. GF ordered the 2 year one for us to compare. Speaking of the bartender, he was very nice, friendly, and helpful. He also wasn't terrible to look at, either. Jenever isn't exactly grenadine or lemonade so I took my time getting it all down the hatch. We decided to share their "cocktail of the moment" which to my surprise, was a few spirits combined in a Jenever glass. It was DELICIOUS but on the sweeter side, just the way I like it. Seating can be a touch of an issue. There were two tables outside and very, very, VERY, limited seating inside. There is very interesting decor with old world ambiance inside and a bar where you rest your beverage while standing. This is definitely a spot worth visiting. read more

The day we visited, the bar was being run by the proprietor himself, who very kindly gave us advice on which Jenever varieties to taste. Their in-house single malt Jenever is absolutely fabulous. It has a smooth, rich taste reminiscent of a sweeter scotch variety. The juniper taste really comes through, in a way that differs from a standard gin. We also tried a few mixed Bols for contrast. We finished off by ordering the mixed drink of the month, "Rest and a steady hand," which was excellent and unlike any other mixed drink I have been served. This is one of the oldest bars in Amsterdam, and it's very conveniently located in the Centraal region, near many tourist stops. They have a nice collection of casks of Jenever, some of which are several hundred years old! read more

I saw this bar featured on Anthony Bourdain. Enticed by the jenever, a Dutch spirit, I decided to make this one of my first stops in Amsterdam. Wooden floors are dusted with sand. It must be for some reason, don't know why. Walls are lined with wood casks, which I'm not sure are still in service. A small and cozy space. Initially I wasn't sure what the difference was between "jonge" and "oude" jenever. But as I was sipping on it I had an epiphany. Jonge means young and oude mean old. That being said, I prefer the young jenever. Smooth. Mild cream and spice note. Alcohol finish. The old jenever has a tequila like flavor. Spicy finish. Definitely more complex in terms of flavor. I ordered a bottle of cider. A lot of carbonation. Light vinegar note. Apple vinegar quality. Clean finish. And lastly, got a Gulpener off the tap and its hands down the best pilsner I've ever had. Nice carbonation. Each sip is as refreshing as the last. The flavor is uber smooth with no astringency. A choice purveyor of alcoholic beverages. Do visit. read more

Dates back to 1650. Amazing old world feel. They are proud of their jenever--the oude (old) and jonge (young) What a treat to sample in such a setting. They pour the glass full so you have to bend over and take the first sip without touching the glass. Sometimes the jonge is served with a touch of bitters and often backed with a beer The oude has been aged in oak barrels. This café is located behind the Nieuwe kerk on the Dam. It was established in 1650. It is the oldest tasting house. They sell all sorts of gin/Jenevers, the usual Dutch beers like Heineken and some specialty beers, wine and drinks like Boswandeling. The outside area wasn't one of the comfiest ones but I liked the barrels for tables. The inside has a vintage feel. And the owner was very friendly. I will have to go back there as I just found out they sell a "bitterkoekjes" Jenever. read more

When my friends and I learned about jenever, we weren't sure where to go and randomly chose De Drie Fleschjes. I am so happy we did! It was fairly quiet inside and the bartender was happy to walk us through the history of the business and about the barrels folks rent out. The bar is pretty small, I imagine it gets busy fast. We drank the Old Jenever as we were instructed. It's piney and "herby" and I like it! We ordered beers and a couple of meatballs from the small pot on a hot plate and sat outside in the sun for a while. Truly a pleasant experience. read more

Oh, I love pubs like this, small, neat and with an old world charm. I mean even the barkeepers attire with his white shirt and neat appearance gave the place charm. Loved the barrels of liquor, about 36 of them stacked, each with a spigot attached to them. When I entered I was thinking you could get beer from the barrels, I asked for one labelled: Frank's Friend or was it Frank's Friends, something along those lines. No sir, I was informed you can order them by the barrel. They have numerous choices of liquor to choose from. A little indecisive of what I was going to order, I was going to order a Duvel but I ordered the same as what my host were ordering a Grolsch. I was going to leave this pub with only three stars for lacking seating, but forgiven, for such an upkeep part of history. By the way, we came here after the Dam Palace tour. It was a little before 4pm, which means in New York City time, it was a little before 11am. Drinking before 11am, something I haven't done since my early twenties. read more

Great bar with amazing Bol Jenever. We tried the straight Jenever in 2 varieties and a cocktail with Jenever, Bol Triple Sec, and Angostura bitters. The bartender was fantastic about explaining the proper way to experience Jenever and we loved the cocktail more than the straight tasting portions. This is a small, cosy, very unique, local bar. It's in an excellent location close to the Palace, and Dam Square, Damrak, the Kalverstraat shopping area, and Magna Plaza, are all nearby. We had our favourite drinks, beer and wine for a very reasonable price. The door was locked when we arrived even though the bar was officially open, and we got the impression we weren't particularly welcome and the bar staff were not over-friendly. Inside, there are barrels covering an entire wall which is fascinating, however there is only a minimal amount of seating - not great for weary travellers! Overall, we found the De Drie Fleschjes experience disappointing, however if you like brown bars, this may be the place for you. read more

I think this is my favorite bar in the world. This is the place for jenever and beer. Please don't come in fussing about Sauvignon Blanc. David has been our bartender three of the four times we were here, and he remembered us by visit two! We ended our food tour here with Sean from Urban Adventures. We aren't really big drinkers, but we are so glad we had a chance to stop by this place. The owner/barkeeper was very nice and personable. He gave me a very light Jenever that was cherry flavored. The tradition is to sip a bit of the drink from up top before picking the glass up and enjoying it. He gave my husband the stronger one to make up for my light drink. There was definitely a kick to it. I wished we could remember exactly what he had, but unfortunately we forgot to write it down. The bar is small and cozy, but amazing inside. It is one of the oldest bars in Amsterdam with a lot of history. Apparently one of the oldest bars in Amsterdam, and it looks it (I mean this in a good way! I like old things). They have barrels of liquor along one wall and old nick nacks all around. They have quite and extensive amount of flavored liqueurs on hand and a list of different cocktails that can be made from them. I just had beer this time which is also okay. Amazing discovery from the Layover by Anthony Bourdain. We tried three Jenevers. The young Jenever was phew too much like jet fuel but the older ones were very good. Founded by Rembrandt in the mid 1650s, this place has a lot of history and you feel transported to a whole new era while looking at the barrels asking the wall.
