Fortunately, that bar was full, so we were able to discover this one literally steps away, across the road. Though tiny, there was a table or two open that the three of us decided to snag. We ordered a drink and enjoyed our time. If looking for a low key, traditional bar/cafe in Amsterdam, I'd highly recommend checking out this one. Conveniently located next to In 't Aepjen and Het Elfde Gebod, I'd recommend spending an evening hopping to each of these for a taste of the traditional Dutch brown cafe/pub experience. The bartenders speak great English (just as virtually everyone does in the Netherlands), and the prices for drinks are good. Of all the brown cafes I visited, this was my favorite. For one single reason. A working fireplace! And they had a cat roaming around. Contrary to what you might think, brown cafes have food! Regardless, In 't Aepjen is known as one of (if not) the city's oldest brown cafes/bars, with many claiming that it opened in 1519. For a traditional Amsterdam brown cafe experience, it's pretty hard to find a better spot with more history than this one. Decorated head to toe with monkey decor, legend has it that cashless sailors would exchange exotic pets (mainly monkeys) acquired on their trips for drinks and to settle debts here. At one point, the bar became overrun with so many monkeys that customers began to complain of fleas and lice, so they had to get rid of them. What's more? It's said that In 't Aepjen is housed in one of the oldest wooden houses in Amsterdam, one of just a few to survive a fire that burned down the city in 1452. Legend and history aside, this bar is an awesome place to grab a drink. Between the decor, atmosphere, ambiance, and drink selection, In 't Aepjen has everything going for it. Service is nice and friendly, drinks are affordable, and the location is central and convenient. My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our time here, and would definitely come back again next time we are in Amsterdam.

The place is ran by a couple of cute guys who like to goof around. They rub off good vibes and can pour a mean one when it's not measured out exactly to the shot glass. Doesn't happen at all times, it's a wild card. Just recently it was renovated a bit and now looks more presentable. You have very little seating inside, but that's OK because standing around you are more likely to talk to someone, and the crowd usually consists of locals. Out front there is a smoking and outside seating area lit with those cool retro lights and it's heated too. It's not very big so arm yourself with patience and be prepared for a little squeeze on busier nights. It's definitely worth checking out :)

It has a very nice atmosphere, each time I go in, I meet interesting local and international people, and the prices are not bad. The staff is also friendly. I only give it 4 stars because the liquor selection is not a lot, but it is also not a cocktail bar anyway. Good times!
