Shrimp and Grits

We had the lunch specials. My choice was the Shrimp and Grits with Crawfish Sauce. My husband had the Hamburger Steak with Peppers and Onions. Both were excellent. The salad bar was equivalent to a Ruby Tuesday's on a good day. Yummy. We had to drive out of our way to visit this great little spot, but it was surely worth the time and effort. Great Service too. Thank you Kelton.

Crab cake appetizer was delicious as was the crawfish sauce- weird plating though. It was served to me on a tiny saucer with a plastic cup of sauce that barely fit the plate once poured on top, that's it. No presentation whatsoever. (Place it in a medium saucer bowl with the sauce on or underneath and a garnish, would raise the level of first impression) This restaurant could do quite a few small things to improve ambiance and flow such as: Train the servers to open with an introduction and conversation about the food and restaurant instead of : " what would you like to drink"- worst opening line at a dine-in restaurant. Play some music! The building is beautiful on the inside and so silent once you sit down to eat. Food Plating presentation goes a long way.

In town for work, the fried mushrooms alone are worth the visit. Great service, great food.

On the bartender's recommendation, I ordered the Catfish Plaquemine, and it was phenomenal. Perfectly prepared catfish with a sauce that really brought the dish together. This place has the feel of a classic New Orleans-style restaurant with consistently strong seafood. Definitely worth a visit and I'll be back.

The staff is attentive without hovering, professional without feeling scripted, and they genuinely make you feel welcome. The ambience hits that sweet spot -- energetic but still comfortable, making it an easy place to settle in and enjoy your meal. Now let's talk about the real headline act: the cheese grits. Absolutely out of this world. Creamy, rich, perfectly seasoned and the pepper Jack cheese added a wonderful touch-- they weren't a side dish, they were the star of the show. If they sold those by the gallon, I'd consider questionable life decisions. I ordered the shrimp po'boy. The shrimp themselves? Fantastic. Fresh, fried just right, and piled generously. The toppings and that homemade remoulade (or whatever magic sauce they're whipping up back there) were bright and flavorful. The only hiccup: the bread. The ends were toasted with the intensity of a NASA heat shield. I needed jaw strength training to get through the first few bites. Once you navigated past that crunchy barricade though, it was smooth sailing. I finished with the deep dish apple pie à la mode. I'm not sure if it was made in-house, outsourced, or assembled by a dessert engineer in a lab somewhere -- but I don't really care. It worked. Warm apples, flaky crust, walnuts, brown sugar, and cold ice cream melting into the whole situation... excellent flavor combo. Bonus points for a strong bourbon selection at prices that don't require a small loan application. That alone will get me back in the door. Four stars because of the bread battle, but I'd absolutely come back -- especially for those grits and a good pour of bourbon.

It's the kind of eatery where the waitresses call you "baby" which is a respected Deep South Tradition. I ordered the 1/2 po boy & 1/2 gumbo lunch with a side dish (I chose baked potato salad) for $14. The food arrived about 10 minutes later. My sandwich was a grilled shrimp po boy on bread that tasted like it was from Gambino's. It was very good taste wise and I enjoyed it. Ditto on the cup of seafood gumbo with shrimp in it and with a good tasting roux too. Finally the baked potato salad was creamy, cool and flavorful. Altogether this was a very good meal. On the front door is a sign saying that they charge an extra 4% for credit card usage. Also, on my check were two prices, one for cash and the other for credit. While I detest restaurants that charge extra for credit card usage, I will give Gumbo Pot credit in that they clearly disclose that fee on the door and on the bill but I still hate it.

We tried Boudin Balls that were stuffed (with cheese) and the regular. They were both outstanding but I'd say maybe the ones without cheese were better. It's hard to say because they were both very good. The smoked boudin was better in my opinion only because the casing dries out a bit it makes it crispy so we of course just ate it whole. The regular boudin has a casing that isn't crispy so we chose to just eat the filling. The inside was just as good as the smoked. We only tried the chicken cracklin's and holy cow were they good! Some pieces were real crispy while others were a bit bigger and still had some meat on them. There was a perfect mix up large and small pieces, crispy and not crispy pieces. I wish we had these in Michigan. We brought home some andouille so we could make jambalaya and gumbo. We just cooked some andouille, and it was a little bit spicy and so good. We also brought home some boudin and can't wait to cook that. Be sure to check out their freezer section and take home some different things. This place was such a gem to find! The staff was very friendly and helped us make decisions on exactly what we needed to try since we had never been before. There is seating inside if you're looking to eat there. We just ordered things we could eat on our road trip home as well as things to cook/eat later. I'm only complaint was that the bathroom was not very clean and the toilet didn't flush. That doesn't matter much because you should really be going here for the food! :)

To see across the dining room one has to shield one's eyes with one's hands.... Paint the walls gray, and put some shades on those bright lights! Flatware is the CHEAPEST sold to restaurants, terrible, just like the cheap flatware used by The Loft. Server was friendly for sure but not professional. None of the servers could tell you anything about any of the wines... except for the difference in color! Owners, teach your staff about the wine list! Your servers should know what a Malbec is and that it's from the Mendoza region in the Andes of Argentina, for example. We each had a dish that included a flatiron steak. Sadly our steaks were incredibly tough and chewy. I was able to eat ZERO of it... first bite... chew chew chew until it arrived at its destination, in a paper napkin. Same outcome for bites two and three.... Both ended up in my napkin! The server failed to notice that everything on my plate was gone but the steak appeared untouched! She should have noticed that the other foods were disappearing but the steaks sat appearing untouched on our plates. Green beans, shrimp, pasta dishes all a 10 out of 10! We will go back as overall this is a decent place to eat! However, still waiting on the down town Laurel restaurants to class it up! After all, we are a tourist town (HGTV-Home Town fans) and our guests are here daily from all over the country and world. Train the staff, learn the wines, ditch the cheap flatware, think about adding cloth napkins... and paint the dining room and dim those flood lights!
