I love this shopping center although it's a bit, "bougie" I guess for loss of a better word. Delicious! There is also a Navy Federal Checking which are pretty hard to find, FYI, and there is also a James Avery store, a Victoria's Secret, Ulta, Micheal's craft, and a pretty good shoe store, I think it's carnival shoes but I may be wrong. Than there are a few stores that I could care less about but you may like as they are pretty popular: a Trader Joe's if your into that, a Home Goods, some fancy gift stores, and that really popular cookie shop I can't remember the name but they are always viral with cookies that contain like 3000 calories a piece. There's even a movie theater but I can't speak on that as I've never been. The prices aren't great anywhere in here but the selection and environment is great!

When I drove into the area back on May 25, 2025, I was taken aback by how much this area of San…read moreAntonio had changed. The street that I remember driving in front of the Alamo many years ago is now non-existent! I am really digging the Alamo Plaza, though. From what I understand, the plan is to make it entirely pedestrian-friendly - no more vehicular traffic. Thus, much of the surrounding area is still under construction, but most areas in front of the Alamo are safe. This plaza is not the same as the Plaza de Valero, which is in front of Menger Hotel. Just ensure to wear loose, breathable clothing and drink plenty of water on the really warm to hot Texas days... a young lady in a tour group I was in passed out and hit her head on the concrete of the plaza. She (or rather her boyfriend) refused medical attention. I don't know if she's okay now, but it seemed serious at the time. PARKING I think your best bet with all the ongoing construction would be at the Rivercenter Parking Garage. TIP The building west of the Alamo will be the new Alamo Visitor Center and Museum. A grand opening for 2027 has been slated.

While the Alamo itself is rich in history, I prefer people-watching myself. And boy howdy, is there people watching here! While on my visit, I was enjoying a dish of ice cream, curtesy of one of the shops along the street, when I was able to get my fix of religion. There was a street preacher, or perhaps someone who just wanted to be a street preacher, yelling out scripture and nonsense. It didn't take long for him to be escorted to the end of the street by the police officers who where there patrolling on their bikes. Too bad, I was ready to repent and convert. The plaza provides lots of shade with several large trees and a little bit of seating on benches and concrete walls surrounding the landscape. Most of the shops along the street are geared toward tourists (souvenir shops, overpriced oddity museums and some eateries.) It's worth a visit for a while, but you might find better, less expensive options, a few blocks away.

When I travel and take on the persona of tourist, I do things I would not normally do in my typical…read moreday-to-day life...like browse through souvenir shops. I do not like to collect anything and only purchase items that have a purpose. So this shopping setup goes against everything I usually gravitate toward. However, when on vacation I do like to get a taste of the local fare and perhaps grab a little something to remember my visit. Near where we were staying is the Market Square-an indoor/outdoor market boasting brightly colored, cheaply made and mostly imported items. There are lots of people, upbeat music and an energy that lures you in. Here, you can find a variety of articles of clothing, hats and shot glasses. I was looking for something that I could take to my son-something practical-ish that I wouldn't mind seeing around the house. We visited three separate times (it was a stop on our tour bus), but each time I left empty handed. The hours are a bit limited-they open at ten (or a bit after, really) and close at 4pm. There are restaurants sprinkled throughout, which might draw more people than the actual market. I would have liked to see some more high-quality, artisan made items rather than so many cheap things that were mass produced. Or more "consumable" items such as soaps, candles, candies, etc. But if you're looking for a souvenir without having to spend a lot of money, you just may find something here.

What is Market Square?…read more a- Its part Mexican Outdoor Flea Market where you can get every possible Mexican souvenir you have ever seen in any clichéd tourist stand. b- Its part giant Mexican carnival with lots of food stands and kiosks c- Its part talent show - we saw a youth dance group and a young lady covering a Carrie Underwood song. d- Its part shopping mall with a food court too. So if you like restaurants, street food, Mexicana (Holy shit, I even saw a New York Giant Lucha Libre mask!), music, shopping, and 100% entertainment, this is the place. I have to put in a plug for a place I stopped at on the way out -its called Fruteria Cano, and for $5 I got a humongous cup of Cantaloupe Juice that was one of the best things I had on my San Antonio vacation.

The namesake of the park is William B. Travis, a 19th-century American lawyer-soldier, who at age 26, was a Lt. Colonel in the Texas Army. He died during the Battle of the Alamo. Interestingly enough, this park also once served as a camp for Confederate soldiers, which leads into an interesting segue into the next topic... STATUE CONTROVERSY That statue obelisk at the park's center is actually in honor of war veterans who fought for the South during the Civil War. The 40-ft-high monument is topped with a statue of a Confederate soldier, holding a rifle in his left hand, resting it against the ground, while right hand points to the sky. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/travis-park-plaza-san-antonio?select=2V59Z-sVCY1npQ5NH4oJ6w The words "Lest We Forget" are inscribed halfway down the monument, followed by "Our Confederate Dead" inscribed into the monument further down, close to the base. This resolute figure has stood, watching over the beautiful park on the northern edge of downtown San Antonio since 1900. The statue was first unveiled on April 22 1898, and I'm sure most folk in the intervening years paid no mind about the statue, and probably - understandably so - thinking this statue was of Colonel Travis himself. "Oh were that simple impression kept", I'm sure the city fathers & mothers are thinking right now. "REMOVE THE STATUE" People want to remove the statue as blight in regards to the history of slavery. Former San Antonio City Council member Mario Salas said "It is time to remove the tribute to the southern rebellion." So the soldier's long-term future may be uncertain. MAYORAL RESPONSE However, Democrat Mayor Ivy Taylor, San Antonio's first black AND female mayor, has a different impression of the importance of a clear landscape of history. While other liberal politicians in this bastion of Texas liberty pushing to eradicate Confederate historical sites and symbols from the Lone Star State's past, Ms. Taylor retains a more sober, thoughtful, less reactionary perspective. And interestingly enough, even as another San Antonio councilman, Alan Warrick, had communicated to Ms. Taylor recently to inventory all of the city's Confederate flags & monuments, and then decide if they should be removed, she responded back with thoughtful introspection: "Slavery and the Civil War are part of the American legacy. For more than 200 years we've been trying to fully realize the revolutionary premise of democracy: all men are created equal," she stated. Selectively erasing pieces of our past may make it more comfortable for us but it also makes it easier for many to ignore the historic struggles of Blacks and other minorities in this country, a struggle for equality that continues today." "It is offensive to use the rebel battle flag as a symbol of a city or state but it is also offensive to pretend that Texas was never a slave state or that racism has played no role in our history for the past 150 years." TODAY Notwithstanding the above controversy, the City of San Antonio's Center City Development & Operations Department (CCDO), still hosts the annual "Dinner in Travis Park" which raises funds that philanthropically further the productive development of the park. Since it reopened in 2014, Travis Park continues to be a vibrant gathering place for residents and tourists and is award-winning urban space hosting almost 500 events a year. ECO-FRIENDLY Props to Travis Park for having a bicycle rental station on it's perimeter allowing visiting tourists to grab a bike and ride it throughout the city's beautiful pristine parks and areas. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/travis-park-plaza-san-antonio?select=mtKf_T29YS5Z99kJcPNagQ THE LOWDOWN A wonderful park paying tribute to both a Texas patriot and the struggle for equality of a State.
