However, in looking it up, it apparently actually used to house a series of pizza joints, most notably a Cottage Inn. The dining room is spacious and well-appointed offering a pleasant place to enjoy a meal. I was there with a colleague for a late lunch before dropping him at his hotel before I headed home. Hence, because of the hour it was not busy. It's a bit of a cross between a Mexican full-service restaurant and a Tex-Mex fast food place. The format is walk-up-and-order but the menu is more like a full-service place. The service was friendly and very efficient. They offer some good choices on their menu. My colleague had Lengua Gorditas, which he liked quite a lot. I had one of my Mexican favorites, the Huevos con Chorizo. It was a very tasty selection accompanied by the usual refried beans, rice and tortillas (I chose the corn tortillas). The portion was quite good which worked well since I had eaten very little that day. Even at that, I was not able to finish the beans and rice. We both had bottled drinks. With food, drinks, tax and tip, our bill was $49. At $24.50 per person, it was a bit expensive for lunch, but the value was reasonable for what we got by today's standards. I go to Kalamazoo periodically for business. I'll keep this place in mind when I'm there. They apparently have another location near WMU, so that might be a target to try in the future.

So I had the brisket sandwich. Several thick slices of a grayish brisket in a hoagie bun. No pickle or cole slaw to provide acid. No smoke ring in the meat. I suppose I should have known better and gone to another truck. As the older man was taking my cash for my order, he asked - I thought at first it was said tongue in cheek - if I minded if he slugged the younger man doing the food prep. In retrospect, maybe I need to have greater appreciation for the stressed lives of people doing food service while working inside small metal boxes. Even so, I left no tip. I added the spiciest sauce option at the counter. And the sauce was the best thing about the whole affair. The meat was delicate to chew but was too fatty. And there was more bun than protein. I expected more for $10. It was a mind numbingly inadequate sandwich. My girl said if I could dissect from the hoagie a piece of the meat both untouched by the sauce and with no obvious fat, she would taste a piece. She said the only descriptors she could think of was "a tender, tasteless chew." (Her experiences with brisket in the past have left her scarred because she believes everyone prepares brisket in Kalamazoo to chew like shoe leather.) So we left the half I didn't eat on top of a green trash bin and we watched the bees fight for it.

We truly appreciated that level of attention to detail and the extra effort they made to help bring our vision to life. The food was delicious and exactly as expected.
