From treeology (the study of trees obviously!), to wading into the bay to catch fish, there's something for everyone. If you're more inclined to sit back and watch, the beach is beautiful, and there are great bridges for bird watching. The architecture on the property is also great. Huge mansions and such. I've never taken a class at the Oakdale campus, but my biology class took a field trip there and it was amazing. Just remember, if you're going from the city - traffic can be a ... your mom!

This campus might be a commuter school and dining might be subpar with limited options, but this school definitely provides value education at a fraction of the tuition cost. My favorite place on campus was probably Wang Center and the SAC/union. I also worked part time. To be fair, this campus is located DEEP in LI and does not have a lot of things to do. I still met many wonderful people and had a decent time.

Even though I'm not in that field anymore due to the physical nature of it, I felt that it was a very pleasant, inclusive class. Where my opinion of Suffolk sours dramatically is when I took an Electrical Assembly with an instructor David E. I am really new to soldering and I expected more professionalism. Instead, he complained that we students are giving him a headache. One time, I was taking a pen out and he came over and asked what I'm taking out of my bag. It was a pen. It was just very inappropriate. He would just make passive aggressive comments and it was very hard to work with him. I've never soldered before so of course I'm going to make mistakes. I need constructive feedback not sarcasm. Terrible instructor.

Registration is preferred, but not required. You can still walk right in. There will be plenty of staff available to answer questions. You're greeted with a welcoming, friendly atmosphere from the moment you arrive. Light refreshments will be available. Best access is from Nichols Road.. Enter the campus there and follow signs for Open House check-in. This entrance will bring you closest to the event area. It's the perfect chance to take a guided tour of the campus, meet staff, and see what Suffolk County Community life is really like. Days like this give you a much better feel than just looking online. Definitely worth checking it out if it's been on your list.

if your major is criminal justice, you're in luck. the professors in charge of the criminal justice…read moremajors are top notch. they are all present & past workers of whatever field they teach so it makes the information they provide so useful seeing how it's coming from genuine experience. the classroom sizes are small so everybody knows everyone's name & you're not afraid to ask questions (or at least I wasn't :) )-- the exams are super easy as long as you pay attention. it's a small college & for a commuter like i was, there's not much to get out of it especially because the sports teams there weren't exactly my cup of tea. but with a major you love you'll love waking up every day for class. & a plus to being a CJ major is having a debate about current events so you're always up to date with the latest news!

Attended Dowling College: 02/95 to 6/99 Degree: B.S…read more Transportation Planning & Management I am disheartened to read that Dowling College is planning to close down forever on June 8. Ironically Dowling College would end up similar to the overly enthusiastic student that started to lack direction and focus then ultimately dropped out. When I enrolled in Dowling College, it was an exciting time to be in the school of aviation and transportation. This was the era of the National Aviation & Transportation Center (abbreviated NAT Center). In 1995, the brand new NAT Center was going to lead Dowling College into the forefront of multimodal transportation. The college spent a substantial amount of money on the new campus bordering Brookhaven Airport in Shirley. The campus would turn into a white elephant with the dream of the NAT Center perishing and a name change to the Brookhaven Campus. That would come later after I graduated. In the interim, Dowling created the BS in Transportation Planning & Management. I'd invest 4 years of my life pursuing a college education between the Dowling Oakdale and NAT Center campuses. It was a $48,000 investment. Dowling College excelled in marketing. I remember opening my mailbox and reading the brochures advertising the NAT Center that included illustrations and of a transportation city transformed from the pine barrens in Shirley. This brochure motivated me to go back to college. I had always been infatuated with highways and transportation. Now there is a college eight miles from my house in Holbrook reaching out to my dreams. Right from the get go I was impressed with Dowling. The school had a very cozy vibe. Fortunoff Hall, where I met with the advisor was a Vanderbilt mansion. This building reminded me more of a museum than an institution. A short stroll away beside the shore of the scenic Conetquot River stood the main academic building: Racanelli Center. The small college along the Conetquot River won me over. Throughout my Dowling College life, most of it was commuting and academics. There was no college life outside of academics. In hindsight maybe I should of joined the canoe team. I bonded with the small student body in the school of transportation and numerous students. We got to do some cool stuff that included working on the New Bedford Airport project. I also bonded with Dr. Carl Beckowitz the Coordinator and main Professor in the transportation planning courses. Dr. Beckowitz exemplified the talent in the halls of Dowling College academia. My major complaint besides the hyper expensive tuition was that the curriculum was too biased toward the liberal arts courses. Dowling College is a liberal arts college. When I am paying a fortune of money for my education, liberal arts did me little good. Studying Anthropology, Art in Western Civilization, Senior Seminar in Earthquakes, and History in Western Civilization were some of the classes that I could of done without. Additionally I did not appreciate the secular propoganda that the Professors were promoting in some of these classes. I share the opinion of other students that the liberal arts background of the school was detrimental to the progress of the school of Aviation & Transportation. I saw firsthand some of the Professors negative attitudes toward the NAT Center. With the hour running late I hope that Dowling College survives. It would be sad to see the first four year college in Suffolk County go the same route as A&P and Waldbaum's. Moreover it is sad to see the promise and money invested in the dream of the NAT Center disappear. Unfortunately my dream of a high paying position in transportation disappeared with the NAT Center. You can take away the college but you can't take away the diploma. After graduating with a Dowling undergraduate degree, my GPA was high enough for me to be accepted into the Masters of Urban & Regional Planning program at Florida Atlantic University. When all is said and done Dowling College provided me with the tools to go on to graduate school.
