My Alma Mater! I studied here in 2017-2022, getting degrees in psychology and in Nursing. This campus might be a commuter school and dining might be subpar with limited options, but this school definitely provides value education at a fraction of the tuition cost. My favorite place on campus was probably Wang Center and the SAC/union. I also worked part time. To be fair, this campus is located DEEP in LI and does not have a lot of things to do. DATA THIEVES!!! They use your distraction dealing with medical issues or visiting sick family/friends to trick you into giving them information they are not entitled to nor need other than to be data-sellers. In December I made a rightful and legal request for them to remove a couple of items of MY information from their system that is not needed for any treatment or billing purposes. Beyond acknowledging that they received the request they've gone radio silent on my multiple attempts at follow up other than to say they'll let me know if/when they even deem my request for MY PRIVATE information to be worth their while despite it being in direct violation of NYS Dept. of Health and Patient Bill of Rights, and HIPAA as well as my personal civil rights. Even when threatened with legal action which I've now initiated against them (and I encourage anyone else that has their information at Stony Brook - essentially anyone who has ever used ANY of their practices - to join in the suit and make it a class action case) they have refused to answer or acknowledge my repeated demands that they remove just a few pieces of my personal information. The ONLY reason they could possibly want to hold on to this information is because they're selling it which means they're breaching patient confidentiality in sharing personal patient information to data-buyers. I could understand if I was asking for a lot of information or key billing/treating information to be removed but this isn't the case. And the absolute disrespect from them for the continued lack of response despite various messages is appalling. Do not act like MY information isn't MY RIGHT to control and think that you have any right to control my information. This matter is now going to be escalated to the public, to media, to the NYS AG and HHS OCR and a lawyer when all you had to do was remove a couple of pieces of data. read more

In my doctoral program at Stony Brook, I was not given any mock interview to help me with real interviews; nor any other kind of help. The year that we went on the job market, there was ZERO preparation given. This may have changed, but that's the way it had been for many years up to and including 2012. And regarding publications , no one from SB had given me any help there either. Thank heavens that other colleagues at other institutions were more helpful. They encouraged me to publish and showed me how to do it. None of my professors ever explained to us how to publish or what journals to submit to. What was the reason for this neglect of a CRUCIAL aspect of academic success??? Additionally, suddenly telling all alumni that the Stony Brook emails we had been using "for life" were being deactivated as of last week-June 30th, 2025-was repulsive. SB received a 500,000$ contribution two years ago. But it could not allocate any of that to maintaining this service. I hope they remember that when they ask us for contributions. Just to note: SUNY Binghamton is continuing with its email for life program, and they have less money than Stony Brook does. read more

At Stony Brook College on Thursday March 14, 2024, an Educational Conference took place for ADRC Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Loss "keeping help and hope in mind". There were many sponsors and supporters throughout a full day of 9-4:30 presentations. (see pix) The GPS did take me to the College. There were many signs to follow to the event, parking lots and building . In the morning there was a sign-up area to check-in. Denise Lanzarone a Senior Real Estate specialist helped me find the information for the 2 workshops I had signed up for. All workshops were in the same Academic Center on the 3rd floor. There were 2 workshop time frames, one in the a.m. and one in the p.m. with a variety of presentations to choose from. Along with presentations, shared heartfelt stories, and exhibitors as Melanie from Allegiant Homecare and Jennifer from Parker Institute, there was food and drinks for breakfast and lunch and even later a noted Ice Cream Social where the servers were dressed in style with aprons and hats. (see pix) Overall, I found the Conference well set up and smoothly run along with the capable adaptation of a presenter of one workshop when a something was not set up as requested. The Breakout Session workshop I found the most helpful with Improv and acceptance of in the moment time frames was called Game Changer: How Improv Exercises and Games Boost Well Being , Creativity, and Community. It also was fun and playful; so much that it, surprisingly to me, did lift my spirits. I found this lady Jude (lifestage_inc) to be quite special. There were the thankyous and speeches along with a formal Color guard presentation of men and a woman in uniform from the Fire Department. (see pix) Many exhibitors had handouts, gifts, raffles, and books. The first 100 people who had signed up had a white ticket in their (recyclable necklaces) name tags to enable them to get a free copy of a book of one of the noted Doctor/Author - speakers Sandeep Jauhar. Caregivers were acknowledged for their efforts, time, and love with tears and cheers. There were much heartfelt emotions shared that day. I was able to reach out and network with a few of the exhibitors and I hope to have further connections for our needs. read more

There's are two parts to the TESOL program. There is the section that you actually take at the university. That part of the program you take a foreign language and general classes. But, the TESOL teacher was prejudice. I took the course back in 20xx. I'm not sure if she's still there. For example, they would return your papers with corrections to be made. I would make all corrections and they would find more. I would make those corrections and it still wasn't good enough. And to make matters worse, when I went to the department chair, xxxx xx, she still didn't do anything about it. Then I went to the (Stephanie Preziosi was the teachers name back in 2018). The chairmans name was Mrs. Shideler) Stonybrook equivalent to the EEOC, and of course they founded nothing wrong also. By the way, I knew a black young woman that was also being treated the same way. She ended up transferring out of the Stony Brook. My daughter, who was also an A student, was treated the same way, but she took it and graduated. I subsequently was kicked out of the program because of that C grade. I was told I could not make up the C grade, and I wasn't a good fit for the program. Meanwhile all of my other class grades are Stony Brook we're good. I wasted an entire year just to be discriminated against. Yes, I know it took a long time for me to post this. And the people are probably gone. It took me this long to get over how I was treated enough to pass it on to other brown and black people to warn them of how Stony Brook operates. BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!! read more

Went to this school 20 years ago and came back today to revisit with my teenage child. Lots of changes. New buildings, bikes on campus, water fountains, Starbucks, markets on campus, and new dining options just to name a few. One surprise I found was Charles B Wang as the student infirmary. Charles B Wang has health centers throughout NYC for the low income and undocumented citizens. I was happy to see CBW has a center at Stony Brook. read more

I have applied to Stonybrook's main and school of nursing/ medicine quite a few times. Despite my best efforts I am highly disappointed in not only the unprofessionalism of the staffing but the rudeness, carelessness, and unorganized behavior that I received from them as well. I had dedicated my best time and efforts in filling out their application, only for them to "misplace" certain documents of mine. Not only did they not take accountability and blamed me for their mistakes, but as a result my appIication was a waste because of their negligence. I received such impolite discourteous calls when trying to explain my side and resolve the matter despite all my proof from the Dean Kenneth MacDowell. They were no even willing to refund me for my application fee after all the trouble I experienced from them. the experience was just overall sad, and I expected more from a school, who are supposed to encourage success rather than belittling and badgering prospective students. read more

Overall I genuinely enjoyed my time here at Stony Brook. I transferred in from a underfunded school in the Midwest and I must say having the extra funding at the school definitely helped solidify my experience here! Although I would not come here for more then one degree and never understood people that were able to deal with this school that long! That being said, what Stony Brook lacked, the school made up for in other areas. This school is heavily a "commuter" school, I commuted from both LI & NYC, arguably this school is a poster child of a commuter school. Anyone that says otherwise is wrong. I found the social scene and actual location to be quite off putting being that Stony Brook is in the middle of suburbia. But the school offers many clubs, diversity initiatives, alumni networks, events and student life on campus that made it all the more easier. Although this is a large school my department was very small and I got a a lot of individualized attention! Every course I took here was academically rigorous and I felt challenged. More so then the school I came from. The school could do a better job of managing their funding, I understand we have the Stony Brook Foundation and the schools focus on corporate philanthropy work but it kind of says something about a school when you don't value the humanities, languages and other disciplines besides math and science because although those are super important, I would expect a "flagship" institution to be more well rounded and diversified in their offerings to students. That being said, i am very concerned about higher level leadership and the direction that the school is going in. Seems to me their could be better choices made on where money goes (athletics, the president, health science campus). Like our endowment keeps getting larger but we are struggling for basic needs that the university needs to stay afloat. The school could also do a better job of addressing commuter needs of students from NYC, NJ & Nassau County. I found that commuter services did not really focus on making commuting easier for those that travel the farthest (my commute being almost 4 hours roundtrip) The school could also do a better job of providing more affordable housing to residents. Housing around Stony Brook is more unaffordable then at most other SUNY schools. Having a food pantry on campus for students kinda says something about the lack of resources for some students on campus. I loved the gym at this school! Brand new and always updating equipment! That being said the weight room was always way too small. I love that people complain about parking but in retrospect the parking was actually a lot better then what I have experienced at other schools! First of all, little to no fee for a parking pass, always availability in South P for parking and other lots after 4 PM. Some schools I have been too don't provide enough parking for students! i would advise people who want a traditional campus experience to NOT come here, I know what that looks like and I will tell you that Stony Brook does not embody that ideal. Students here seem more driven and focused then at other schools. This is NOT a party school, and many students do go home on the weekends. Dining is horrendous, but is manageable, specifically I liked the fact that Stony Brook finally decided to give us buffet style after overpaying for small portions forever. That being said the school went through THREE dining vendors when I went here! And they could do better about getting more chain stores besides starbucks, dunkin & subway. My favorite library was Health Science, wasn't a big fan of the Melville Library but the recent renovations of central reading room and north reading room were nice. And I was really disappointed when the school got rid of the stony brook union as that was one of the last student group focused buildings on campus. Seems student spaces on campus seem to be disappearing and replaced by more administration needs! This school is also always under eternal construction, I swear everytime I come back they add several new projects! I do think their is something for everyone at Stony Brook but I do think the school is not for everyone, their were several points I wanted to transfer out but glad i stuck it out! I would just advice anyone who wants to come here talk to alumni, students, take a campus tour and really do the research! People in the admission committee for the nursing program are very racist. I have a 3.5 out of 4.0 GPA I applied to the nursing program they rejected my application. Stony Brook University is not diverse. I don't see a lot of black students. Probably that's the reason why they rejected my application because I am black. I met black students who went there. they told me its the worst university to attend because they treat black people differently there. I regretted that I applied there I wanted to see if what black students are telling was true. well, it is true. I contacted them through email, but no one ever replies back. Racism is a disease that will never cure. There is a lot of racism going on at stony brook university. Shame on them. It's 2020 which means its time for a change. One favor I will do for them is that I will never apply to any of their programs again. read more

I admit I was a little bit harsh on Stony Brook in my last review, so I will write a better one. The best way to describe the school is with a metaphor. You see, Stony Brook is alot like Walmart, you get the minimal amount of education that you pay for at the cheapest prices possible. So it is technically legit. It is an accredited school. Not a good school, but a school none-the-less. This school is good at business, computer science, math and engineering. If you are anything else, I will tell you straight up, SCAM! You will have trouble finding employment with any other major. About 85% of the students who end up here are pre-med because they have this false idea that you have to be in this school to be pre-med. No, you can go to any school to be premed. It is just a series of courses you have to take to prep for the MCAT which this school does very poorly. If you are taking any kind of science, I want to warn you right now, the professors do not teach. You have to teach yourself. Seriously I learned all the sciences from khanacademy. The professors do not teach you a goddam thing. You need to teach yourself the sciences and have a basic understanding of it before going to class. I racked up a few C's before figuring this out. I had some crazy professors before like Huilin Li who made Biochemistry more a linguistics class. Yeah the biochemistry was easy. It's just that you had to translate whatever the language he is speaking into English because the test is in English. Use ratemyprofessors and common sense when choosing DEC's. If the consensus is saying "This professor is horrible or you will get an F in that class", don't take that class. Academic advising is a waste of time. I'll do the advising for you. It's in your undergrad/grad bulletin. It tells you which classes you have to take for that major if you want that degree and how many credits you have to take. It is all there in black in white so there is no need for academic advising because they do not know what the hell they are talking about. Just find out what classes you have to take and fit them into your schedule. The food is sometimes edible. Depends on which dining facility you are talking about. HSC food is guarenteed to be okay because it's for the patients but you can sneak in there too. This is a commuter school. Most people commute which is why it is a ghost town on the weekends. If you live in the dorms, it's cool too. Each dorm has its own amenities. Roth has AC and wifi with a compromise of a small room and a radioactive pond in the middle. H-quad has big rooms with a compromise of everything else so you really need to choose. You don't really have a choice, but if you pick SSO and opt to be a science major in the questionnaire, you will get the coveted Roth Quad. Freshman will be tripled though which can be a problem. Most people have to park at South P or Railroad. If this is the case, your commute will be 25 minutes more. If you front 150 bucks you can park at the stadium but come before 8:00 AM or all the spots will be filled and you will be forced to park at South P or Railroad. And that's it. So, Stony Brook is an OKAY school. They just don't teach you anything. They only give you the exams and certifications. YOU are responsible for teaching yourself read more

When I walked into the wang center the first thing I noticed was the modernness of the atmosphere, and once I walked kitchen/dining area it's smelt beautiful. As a vegetarian, my food choices are typically limited but I felt like I had many options when choosing food at the Stony Brook University wang center. The workers were also very interactive as well as friendly and showed interest in assisting me while picking out my sushi. Even though they told me that it seemed like a lot of carbs, which did shoot down my self esteem a bit. But overall everything Tasted super fresh and I would definitely indulge there again! read more

Background: I grew up around the Stony Brook area and came here for undergrad and worked here for 1.5 years after graduation. Do I like stony brook? No... Do I regret coming here? No... A couple of years back Stony Brook was rated #1 school with the most unhappiest students in the country. If you ask many students who go here... they will tell you the school sucks. A lot of that is mainly due to the feeling that the administration are working in the most inefficient manner possible. To some extent it is true. Ask any student that comes/went here and they can tell you something different. Now that said, college is not about what the school offers you, but what you make of the opportunities you have. If you are stuck going to Stony Brook, don't let the reviews or how others think impact how you think and act in college. While Stony Brook isn't one of the best of schools, it still has the resources to provide you opportunities should you seek them out. Be pro-active. Opportunities are everywhere. Just because they aren't being plastered in your face does not mean they aren't out there. P.S. Food here on campus get real old... real fast. Eat off campus. Oh Stonyland.. how I kind-of miss thee. We had some good times, some not-so-good times. From Langmuir to Stimson to the Union to the SAC. Up and down the zebra path. Strawberry fest and random fairs with free tshirts, cotton candy, and weird blowup obstaclegames. Cross campus run at 2:45am to Kelly because that's the only place left open for midnight munchies. Thursday party nights because Friday everyone goes home. I'm not with you anymore, but at times I thought I'd never be rid of you. I must ask... WHY did you make all science classes MWF at obscene early hours? While business and/or psych get TuTh afternoon hours. Not fair. I never attended this college but in the early 90's I saw some really cool shows here; The Red Hot Chili peppers, The Fleshtones, Fishbone, 1.6 Band, I didn't make it to the Dead milkmen but I did get to a spoken word thing where poppy Z Brite read some stuff. I used to skate the banks at some center and would regularly get kicked out too. The radio station 90.1 ruled the school, local, classic, and international punk rock. I made a lot of cool friends there and didn't go on to get a great job. read more

This rating applies to the school overall from the perspective of my entire freshman year of which I had the fortune to reside in the notorious Roosevelt Quad (supposedly designed by a prison architect) which had plenty of periods of no heat (so there were mandatory evacuations during the winter), no running water due to blown boilers (again, multiple times during the semester), Aside from that, the school overall is a hodge podge of old and new buildings, ranging from the 1950's to brand new futuristic addons tacked onto the old buildings. Regardless, for the price, the school is great for academics. Classes are challenging and the professors and TA's usually are sufficient. The intro natural sciences and calculus courses however are a crap shoot as they're the most packed and usually have two or more professors running each course -- and the grading for the most part is *very* strict (In CHE131 I remember seeing a midterm with the median as 45% and the professor not offering a curve). Anyway, I could go on, but overall your view of the school will depend on what your looking for. Everyone's college experience can be quite different. For most Stony Brook Students, they HATE it here. Being fairly realistic, Stony Brook was ranked on the Princeton Review list of most depressed students pulling up to third, behind Merchant Marines Academy and US Coast Guard Academy, it's bad. But it is what you make of this predominantly commuter school. There are always people on the weekends that are looking to have fun or goof around the campus, plus when the campus blacks out a huge game of man hunt always breaks out! The best hosptial on the Eastern End of Long Island. The ER is quick and the docs are qualified and courteous. Had the unfortunate experience to have been to the ER at least three times--and have also been to Peconic Bay ER and Southampton ER (yeah, fun year, kids!!), anyway, Stony Brook was BY FAR the best. At 3am there were many staff available to assist and docs on call were fast and very sharp. Lots of young MD's, obviously they are drawing from a very talented pool of candidates. Highly recommended, fast and, oh, THEY HAVE A PEDIATRIC EMERGENCY ROOM, --almost forgot this very important tidbit of info. read more

In my 4 years here (Biology major), I realize that most of these professors don't have a teaching bone in their body. When you have a class of 200 chemistry students and the average number of correct answers on the chem test is 8 out of 20 - then unless the students are all mentally challenged, the professor must really suck - but this is the reality. I was not permitted to do neuro research with the neurology professor because I didn't have all A's. The classes are huge and most of the professors could give 2 craps less about the students - they are only there to get a paycheck. This was a waste of 4 years of my life. Don't go to school here unless you live nearby and are planning on living at home to save money. Here's the truth about Stony Brook: -It's a commuter college, which means every Long Islander lives at home with their parents and there is no campus life. Unless you already know people here, you will find yourself sitting alone in your dorm room. You will not make friends here. -It's expensive. You're paying NYC prices for suburban sprawl with nothing worthwhile around. The university will also milk you for every dollar you have for stupid fees that don't actually pay for any services. For example, on campus apartments will charge you for the summer whether you live in Stony Brook during the summer or not (and trust me, if you make the mistake of coming to Stony Brook, you will not want to waste another moment of your life here once classes end in the spring). -There is limited class selection. Due to constant budget cuts there are hardly any classes offered. You will end up taking classes you're not interested in just to fill your schedule and you may end up taking longer to graduate because the courses you need are not offered. -On-campus housing options are overpriced slums. I lived in an apartment with holes in the walls, a non-working oven, a shower that broke constantly, and an internet connection that only worked half the time. No one ever fixes anything no matter how many work order requests you submit. Also, if you have a noise complaint (like an idiot who has been playing Marcy's Playground for 3 hours, like it's 1999 or something)-too bad! No one will ever address any issue. -The food options are terrible. Overpriced Starbucks with a half-hour wait in line is your best food option. -The campus is ugly and the facilities are poor. Do you enjoy waiting in line to access a computer to print? Do you enjoy outdated classrooms that you can't access internet in? Welcome to Stony Brook! -There are a lot of Asian and international students (mostly from China)-probably 50% of the student body. These students are nice, but they keep to themselves and have their own social groups. The international students hang out together, the Long Islanders drive back to their parents' houses, and you will be left sitting alone with nothing to do and regretting that you ever came to Stony Brook. -They have the highest rate of depressed students and a fair number of suicides every year. This is a horrible place and it wears on you.If you think you can get help at counseling services, be aware that you will be seeing therapists in training and only for a few visits. In Stony Brook, you will be completely on your own in a horrible place. I regret coming here, and if I would have just visited the campus, I never would have enrolled at Stony Brook. Typical commuter college, campus is a ghost town from Friday to Sunday as everyone goes home for the weekend. Campus hasn't changed since the 60s, it's depressing looking and needs makeover. Parking is horrendous and it's a constant battle to find a spot. You know how they say college is what you make of it? That's even more true for Stony Brook. For everyone I knew who loved to complain about how boring it was and hopped the LIRR back home on Thursdays, I knew someone else there who was outgoing, fun to be around, and I'm still friends with them. The "it's so depressing students are constantly committing suicide" stuff is completely made-up. There's tons of really active clubs. There's at least one or two for every major/minor (CS had two or three active ones in my last semester, and the leaders were thinking of adding more), a hall council for each dorm, and a bunch of others for swimming, any nationality you can think of. When I was a student, Community Service Club as a great, active club that had three or four meetings a week. Everyone involved in any of the student orgs is there to do something they love and meet new friends. I made some great friends just by being outgoing, getting involved in CSC, hall council, and a few of the other clubs. The STEM programs are all great, and have strong reputations. They attract professors from all over the world, which has its ups and downs. I took classes from Gödel Award winners and a CS professor whose textbook is considered great interview prep by Google, but I also had a few classes taught by profs who were obviously just there for the research and didn't make the slightest effort to get over the language barrier. You're definitely going to have to put in some hard work on your own part at SBU, no matter what major you're in or what professors you sign up for, but that's par for the course at college. One of the weird things about SBU is that the administration was actually a lot easier to deal with than at any other college I've went to. At CSI, you'd probably need to run all across campus and go to like four different offices in four different buildings to get something done. Here more or less everything is located in one floor of one building. Getting transcripts, graduation forms, major change forms, all of those were pretty easy. Even though I loved my time at SBU, there's definitely some things about it that suck. The campus is pretty dull-looking, and it's only really nice and pleasant during summertime - when hardly anyone's around. You get those awful torrential rainstorms in August through November too, but those are more of a fact of life for downstate NY than something specific to SBU. There's no real college town, either. I've heard that Port Jeff has some nice bars and things to do, but my impression of Long Island is that it's mostly just a bunch of boring little satellite villages for NYC, and Stony didn't change that at all. The food isn't too good, either. The Wang Center has some okayish Asian food, but aside that it's pretty standard cafeteria stuff. You could cook for yourself, but if you don't have a car (and come on, like half the students are from NYC), the buses running through. Some of the academic buildings suck, too. It's not without its warts, but Stony Brook is a great school over all, and if you're planning on going into a medical or STEM field, it's a wonderful choice. read more

I would suggest living on campus if possible, as the commute can be long, on top of the commute from the parking lot to class. I attended Stony Brook. I had great memories and met my wife here. The professors are good, though some of them were difficult to understand (language barrier). A lot of different, great programs to build a foundation for your future. The University is your standard commuter school. Students that dorm stay Sunday-Thursday. Friday and Saturday the place is a ghost town. Thursday is party night on campus. When I attended Stony Brook, freshmen had to park in the commuter lot near North Campus. If you are a student and you are looking for work, join RSP (Residential Safety Program). They pay well and you also play a vital part in securing the campus. (You must live on campus to work for RSP). The tuition is low because it is a SUNY but it is a great value. Would recommend for dental, premed, business and engineering majors. read more

I applied for a graduate program and the faculty I met with were awful from the get-go. The week before the application was due, the only contact person for the department was on vacation and not available to answer last-minute questions. When she returned, she sent me a very terse email asking me WHY I wanted to know this information, and because everyone works from home during these COVID times, I should know better than to expect an answer in a timely manner. (This is not verbatim, but pretty close.) I moved through the application process to an absolutely bizarre 7-person Zoom interview, and was told at the end of it that applicants would be notified by a certain date. I never got a letter, never got an email -- nothing. I finally contacted the director of the program by email. No answer (of course). A week later, I contacted her again and her beyond-priceless answer was that I did not get into the program and I must have missed the email notification. (Like I wasn't searching every single inch of my email for the past month for an acceptance or rejection. Totally MY fault.) Needless to say, NOT impressed by this school, but I look upon this experience as dodging a bullet. I got into a different school for my program and I'm so glad it worked out this way. read more

Great care facilities & endowment, considering they're NYS funded.

Don't take Stony Brook for granted just because it is local. It is one of the top rated schools in the US and so affordable!

Personally, I have nothing to say about academics. I believe Stony Brook has a good foundation when it comes to the professors and the courses they offer. The only downside is signing up for classes. Make sure before you come into Stony, you bring in a lot of credits from your high school because signing up for classes could be very competitive. BUT The only reason I am writing this review and giving this school two stars is due to my dorming experience. For those of you who are dorming and happen to get an unlucky roommate, I want to warn you (from my first-year experience) that situations will not be handled the way they should be. I have experienced roommate issues and even went through roommate contracts. I had to go through more than one meeting that did not fully resolve the issues, which led me to having several meetings throughout the whole two semesters just to handle small issues. There was this one time when the meeting lasted for 3 hours. This, obviously, took away a lot of my time (especially my studying time). We all know how precious time is and how busy college students are. I still don't understand why dorming issues can't be solved in a timely manner efficiently and effectively at this school. I also noticed that there was bias going around when handling roommate issues. The directors or whoever is handling your roommate issue will say they're not being biased whatsoever, but through my experience I sensed bias going around. Especially in my building, where the director was a mentor/ teacher for my roommate. The director obviously did not listen to my side of the story or take into consideration of how I was feeling in the situations I was in with my roommate. I will not mention any personal names or the building that I stayed in, but just so everyone who is applying knows, be prepared (if you do have roommate issues or issues in the building in general) for unprofessionalism and bias when handling such issues. A great public research University, but it's only a public research university. The campus is very pretty!

SBU is an amazing university at an unbeatable price. I have nothing negative to say about this school. The professors have always been open to helping me and respond to emails within 24 hours. All of the teachers are extremely qualified and the classes are challenging, in a good way. They have over 300 clubs for students to join, a beautiful arts center, and a caring staff. I've been to other universities and none compare to SBU. read more

I wish I could give these cheap cock suckers 0 stars. The people in charge have turned this once great university and turned it into a place where the only thing that matters is making $ off the students that attend. The paid parking was once 7$ for all day now it's been raised to a ridiculous 14$ for all day parking. They have changed food they serve !They once served ok food for fair prices. Now the food is horrible, lowered the size and quality of the food and raised to prices. All unfair to the student. I sincerely hope the people in charge lose there jobs and go to hell. read more

This is my second review to specifically share my experience with the financial aid/bursar. So first off I had been receiving counseling from the CAPs department for over a year (which actually isn't allowed but my counselor was the coolest so anyway if you've got any history of mental health issues don't attend here because the school will make you want to die and then won't offer counseling about it) so due to extenuating circumstances I had to make the earth shattering decision to leave the state of New York overnight and withdraw. So if I wasn't going through enough, after I was misinformed about my withdrawal I receive a $3,000 bill from the university (mind you, this was only a month into classes I withdrew) so I'm told (very loudly) by the financial aid department that if I want to do anything about it I'll have to submit a tuition appeal and letter describing my extenuating circumstances. After I pour my heart out in this letter I get a denial, and when I pursued this further I was told by Erik Andersen of the Bursar that "although your circumstances were unfortunate, you could have mitigated with housing." So this is after I, a college student with a history of depression and anxiety who made this very clear, went through a life crisis, I was told by the bursar basically "too bad, you should've done more." Fair enough, turn the knife after you stab me, I write again to ask what more I can do, can I send a letter from my counselor? Speak to someone higher up? No answer. Thanks for the consideration and compassion Erik! So after digging around on my own (because that's what we pay these people at the university for) I follow a different avenue and submit further documentation about my circumstance. I am denied by student billing now for (get this) being past the deadline, because Erik Andersen here that I am paying a whopping $3000 to provide me, the student, with financial services couldn't be bothered to dig deep into that black hole he calls a heart and find some empathy to just answer my questions. Now I'm screwed, can't get my credits from the university until they're paid in full, and I was told "hope in the future you are able to come back and finish your education with us." I would rather die, thank you Stony Brook University. read more
