My daughter had a Professor named AJ Delong for Developmental writing last semester at the Ammerman Campus in Selden. This Professor refused to help when she was asking for help she told my daughter to look on brightspace and was annoyed that my daughter even asked her for help. My daughter wrote a total of 4 essays her first one I get she got the grade she deserved but her final 3 she worked her butt off on and the teacher lowballed each one. My daughter is not the only one she did this to she also accused another student of plagiarism because the student used big words in her essay. My daughter complained to the department chair Dr. Douglas but he would not help at all he feels that my daughter got the grades she deserved because she was on her phone a lot and never asked for help according to Professor DeLong. Professor DeLong gave my daughter permission to be on her phone at times and it was only during those times my daughter was on her phone. When my daughter did ask for help Professor Delong responded back very sarcastically. My daughter tried going through proper channels but nothing is being done so this is our last recourse. Even my daughter's Evidence and Procedural Law Professor changed her grade from a C to an A once he read her final paper. Professor DeLong gave my daughter a D which is uncalled for and Dr.Howard had promised my daughter that he would read her essays but he never did and than said that he never promised that or that he would have the grade changed. My daughter never asked for him to change the grade just to read the essays to see what he thought and he said he would ask Professor DeLong to see them. All my daughter wanted is fairness and she definitely is not getting that. read more

I had a very mixed, and more upsetting experience at the Suffolk community college in Brentwood. I had an excellent experience taking a solar panel installation course. We learned a lot about architecture and the science of roofing, the tools that are involved and basic electricity. It opened my eyes and although I am not installing solar panels now because physically, I found the panels too big for me as a smaller stature person, and the work is tough, I still learned a lot and the instructor was professional and very well spoken. This class was free through the department of labor and I am very grateful for this. However, the next class I took was electrical assembly, also free through dept of defense funding. I thought it would be better because it's physically smaller. Well, it started out ok but every class I was leaving upset and slightly off until one day, I decided I had enough. Four incidences that gave me that icky feeling: 1. I asked if the professor could make the screen larger, and he could have said let me try or something, but instead with attitude, that I should move my seat. Just say it in a nice way next time. It's not a ridiculous question. 2. We all have busy lives but the instructor, I'll call him Mr. E kept complaining that we are giving him a headache. It's funny once or twice but every class I got tired of hearing him say that. 3. I was taking a pen out of my bag, and he came over to me and asked what I'm taking out of my bag. This is a college course man, not the TSA. I don't have to answer this question from you. I wish I said something more wittier to him. Unbelievable. 4. Gave contradicting directions so it was hard to know what he wants. It could have been great but don't appreciate being questioned about taking out a pen. It really made me uncomfortable. read more

Please improve the admissions process and rude counselors . This school is very unorganized and gave me misinformation. One person from the admissions department told me one thing then someone else told me completely contradictory information knowing students have deadlines to meet. Then when I try to get things resolved they refused to take accountability and acted as if everything was my fault being dismissive to me. I am glad I see this now before actually attending this college . SCC needs training as far as setting proper expectations to prospective students. First off I'd like to start by saying that the parking situation is an absolute nightmare. Just to find a parking spot for my car I had to park like 6 miles from where I needed to be. This only gets worse during inclement weather as far as they care. Mrs. Troy the teacher is a complete idiot when it comes to race relations. She accused me of using I guess what amounted to non PC language, but honestly I think she (a white lady) was just picking fights like the pretentious asshole she is. I tried to take a pre-PA class here as an adult learner and they treated my like garbage. They refused to let me sign up for a even basic biology class because they refused to waive a remedial math class. A remedial math class that they would not let me test out of and that they would not accept transfer credits for. A remedial math class that would set me back months and cost hundreds of dollars. Mind you I already have a 4 year degree. If you think that you can just take a few classes here and it will be an easy process, think again, they want to bilk you out of you money and waste your time while insulting you in the process. This is the worst place to get any kind of education. The teachers are mean and uncaring. The main office seems to just close themselves off and give attitude to people just trying to get information or help. I had an English teacher, Donna Barnes, who wrote a book and had us read the book and to get a good grade, we would have to go to websites like Amazon and Barnes and Noble, to leave good review to pump up sales so she can "Pay off her college debt". Her actual words. Another teacher, Lars Headstrom, would ramble on about nothing. Talk about how he hangs out and goes yachting with Billy Joel. I didn't care to hear about his personal escapades in the Hamptons and when I didn't pay attention he cursed me out of his class. He also called a few of us "Pieces of shit" for using laptops to take notes. Me and another student who this happened to spoke to the dean and he just shrugged and said "He has tenor." Which I guess gives free range to be disrespectful and get away with it. The math chairman at the time, don't know if he still is or not, just straight up lied to me. He saw I didn't do well in math in high school, so he suggested I should take an easier course as a refresher. I agreed, because yeah it made sense. I'm horrible in math. Well I barely passed that class and when I got put back in it and brought this up to him, he shook his head and told he has no recollection of this conversation and I'm obviously lying. Which then led to me having a math teacher who liked to ridicule me for not understanding math. He would ask "Who didn't understand that?" I would raise my hand and he would sigh and go "Well of course YOU didn't get it." The bowling teacher was a piece of work as well. I place more towards the bottom so on the last day he put us in to teams based on that. He listed off teams as "The best" or "Amazing!". When he got to my team, he just stops and goes "Crap." So we got a teacher evaluation form during that last class and it asked how his teaching was. I put down "Crap. Like what you called me." I could go on. No one there cares. No one there will care. I had friends come to the cafeteria crying from being yelled at by teachers and the head office there did nothing. Use your money towards somewhere/something better. You will not receive any help here and will be constantly made to feel horrible. read more

The nursing faculty at this campus, with the exception of Professor Williams, have exhibited behavior that I perceive as discriminatory. There appears to be a pattern of minority students being failed at a higher rate than their counterparts, with certain students seemingly receiving preferential treatment. There is a lack of transparency, as some policies are not documented in the student and nursing handbooks. Additionally, they disable exam scores on the ATI platform, citing "integrity," preventing students from knowing their true scores. However, this standard seems inconsistently applied, as there were points being selectively awarded to white students without explanation. The grade grievance process also raises concerns, as the close relationships among the predominantly white faculty may introduce bias, making it difficult for students to receive an impartial review. This situation highlights the need for a more transparent and equitable approach to grading and policy enforcement within the nursing program. I will never recommend anyone of minority to attend this college. Pay your money and invest in your future by going to a private college or Nassau Community College. Anywhere but SKKK, who takes minorities financial aid and money ultimately to fail them condescendingly. read more

Every professor I come in contact with are extremely helpful. They want you to succeed. I love this school so very much. 4 stars because bathrooms could be upgraded- and the only real problem I have with this school is that being a community college you would think they would offer more night classes. Most of the students here are working full time or returning to college after a long hiatus. Those are my only complaints, otherwise a fantastic starting school. Advisors are extremely helpful and patient when it comes to discussing your FUTURE with them. read more

I'm updating my review because after my last experience at Suffolk I felt the need to update. First of all it's been 3 glorious years after graduating but my job graciously offered to pay for a continuing ed class for the night so I can get some tips for the Notary Public exam. I'm in the field where being a Notary is an added perk to the resume. That being said off to the races I went back to Suffolk for the night with one of my gal pals from work who also is looking to become a Notary. I'm not one to be a snob but after getting countless emails on how the campus is now smoke free I find that EXTREMELY hard to believe. The amount of cigarette butts we encountered when we walked to and from the building leads me to believe the campus is not smoke free. I don't care because I have quite a few friends who smoke but don't say the campus is smoke free when the litter says otherwise. Also... speaking about litter. Let me just say this... the parking lot? Paper... random garbage from food and drink.. not pretty. The path to and from the building outside said building? One word... DISGUSTING. When people say females are more vile than males.. after this certain experience.... Hell yeah some chicks are just downright gross. I mean c'mon now. The hell is wrong with you? All I'm saying is I do NOT want to know the backstory on what we encountered. Thankyouverymuch. If you can get past the litter and the parking situation then you've got yourself a decent school with a pretty good education. This class on the other hand was rather interesting to say the least with the array of "students" if you will. So on that note... peace out Suffolk! read more

The teachers even if the class had nothing to do with politics would just bring it up out of nowhere and divide the class constantly I feel like they were lord focused on their own personal lives than teaching us. There are a lot of collegiate institutions throughout the United States. After looking through the options that were at my disposal during Senior Year of high school, indecisive old me decided to just buy myself a couple of years the best way possible - community college! I'll be honest - I was fully expecting someplace where I would just try and clear out my core classes at a relative discount compared to the more established universities in America. Much to my surprise... I was totally right. After all, that's part of what Suffolk Community is for - open the doors of education to all. Still, I was more than satisfied with the whole academic experience. Yeah, there were those that just took courses to get out of the house, but for every person that was just doing enough to get through, I can name more than one person that came in and gave their all. Beyond that, there were tons of student-run organizations and clubs, covering practically every niche - History Club, the student paper, philosophy club, etc. As far as professors go, I had one or two that didn't seem to give too much of a damn. But that was a very, very, very limited number. The vast, vast majority of professors that I encountered were passionate about their careers, the subjects they were teaching, the students, etc. I felt like I was being challenged quite adequately while at this school. Putting it simply, the cliche of "Scruffolk" does not hold too much merit, if at all. When it comes to other aspects: - Food providers changed during my two-year tenure - and admittedly, I preferred the first over the second. Now, they apparently have a Moes and a Starbucks... which is an improvement. - Wifi was godawful during "peak hours". - Most of the buildings feel like they came out of the 70s. This school ain't winning too many architecture awards. - Financial aid was actually quite receptive. Had an issue once, and they were able to resolve it. - Parking is apparently awful, but I took the bus to school most of the time, so... I waffled between three and four stars for Suffolk, but I ultimately decided on 4. Why? Simple - major bang for your buck. I left SCCC with an AA, wound up with no debt (with the help of my parents), all of my credits transferred over to Stony Brook University (literally up the road), and I was able to mature as a person during my two years here. Can't decide on a University? There's no shame in enrolling here at all. read more

Parking situation is actually garbage! If I don't have to drive myself, I don't! They also could have flattened this campus a-fucking-lot. It's all hills and so many staircases. Besides that, I don't really mind it. Keep in mind, it's a COMMUNITY college! It is a great place to start! Wish I did sooner. Some of the 18-year-olds are full of themselves and very obviously don't want to be there but you're there to get a degree and start your future, not make friends. As long as you look up your professors before-hand, you'll do just fine! Remember, no matter what college you attend, there is always going to be shitty professors, students and administrators. I think about the money that I have saved by going here instead of a more expensive school and I think it was the right move for me. SUFFOLK community college is the MOST difficult college to enroll into especially if you're a serious student. Most of the workers in admissions, financial aid, registrar ETC are so unprofessional and lost & they will give you a wild goose chase due to wrong information. The professors are awesome! read more

Pretty darn good school for a community college. Definitely get your assoicates with ease. This school is great for adults because of many adults that come here - makes it more of a learning environment - because kids don't dominate the place. Various night and weekend classes to accomdate working people, but no public transportation after 6pm. Also many online classes, too. The roads in the campus need to be repaved, and the parking lot lacks adequate security.(There has been many car vandalism - radios, breaking windows, etc.) Also during peak student enter and exit hours, it can get nasty exiting. read more

For the most part of my schooling at Suffolk county community college it was enjoyable. Until I enrolled into the Day LPN program. I completed all the required prerequisites and paid the $100 deposit that was required to hold my spot in class. Attenedend orientation and was told by admissions they accepted student loans and financial aid.. being a older student trying to better myself and working 2 jobs and going to school living independently on long island is not easy. Then once school is about to begin. I get a letter stating my student loans would not be accepted because they do not offer enough credits and would have to pay $2400.00 out of pocket and also but $1500 in books to be able to attend. After not being able to do this I had to withdraw and then finding out that becasue of there lack of information to students I could not get my $100 deposit back becasue its" non refundable" so be aware of this misleading information .. unless you like to throw away your hard earned money read more

Traffic is a pain as well as parking. But the small campus is easy to navigate. I have never had a professor who was demeaning and to a fault sometimes maybe a little to laid back. There is no good food here so if your hungry there are some close by places but you I'll have to give up your all coveted parking spot that you probably searched a half hour for. This place is a great place to get your associates degree and then transfer to a more accredited school. read more

The worst experience I've ever had. The staff is extremely unhelpful and doesn't care about your personal wellbeing. Sometimes you'll sit and wait for 20 minutes while the staff talks to each other. I will start this review by saying that I did not attend Suffolk County Community College recently. That said, what I will do is try to provide some highpoints as to what I took away from the experience attending SCCC back in the early to mid-1970s. Back then we still had a lot of returning Viet Nam vets. We also had the protests that took place in 1971, 72 and 73 and we had "the streakers." When I first attended SCCC immediately after graduating from HS in 1971, I did NOT want to be there because all my friends went away to 4 year schools and I resented having to attend "Second Chance Community College." After a year when I only completed 19 credits, I dropped out and my parents told me to get a job. I did in what was then a SEARS CATALOG department and as a waiter. I realized soon enough while working alongside college students with 3 or 4 years of college at SEARS and the restaurant that I had better get my ass back to school if I did not want to do brain-dead boring jobs all my life. I returned to SCCC in February 1973 with a new vigor and the intention to get better grades and shot for a minimum of 3.5 GPAs each semester. In the Spring of that year, I did just that, and again in the Fall of '73 and Spring of '74. As a result, I was able to obtain a 2 year Army ROTC scholarship to Hofstra University from where I graduated in 1976; only a year behind my original graduation date of 1975. Like so many recent students who have commented on the food at the Selden campus and the lousy parking situation, it was like that 40 years ago. So nothing's changed. What I do remember however were the instructors and professors who too often only taught at a slightly elevated HS level. Others taught somewhere between that an the first two years of a 4 year college. Despite that, I liked many of the courses I took at SCCC and despite not being an English major (but having taken AP English in HS) eventually left SCCC with 24 credits in English, Creative Writing & Journalism. I was active in student affairs when I returned to SCCC the second time and eventually became the editor of THE COMPASS, the college paper. As I worked my way through the degree requirements, I found that SCCC actually was a tougher place to get one's A.A. degree than what was required at Hofstra. The prime example being back then that one had to take 12-16 credits of math and science courses and this requirement applied to the A.A. degrees in General Studies, the Humanities, Social Sciences and so on. The Hofstra catalog I was admitted under required only 6-9 credits of math AND/OR science. Because of this and the fact that I was very weak in math, I did not complete those requirements at SCCC and thus, never did graduate. Once I knew I had the ROTC scholarship, I left SCCC after my last semester sans the A.A. but on my way to my B.A. When I got to Hofstra in the Fall of '74, I realized that in some ways I was NOT prepared for upper division college work because the reading requirements at a 4 year school were so much more demanding. I would spending my entire first semester on campus at Hofstra getting used to that idea. I also realized that had I attended Hofstra or any other 4 year school out of HS that I would have had to work a lot harder initially than I did at SCCC. Don't get me wrong, many years later I came to realize what a value SCCC offered me. It allowed me to discover college and the responsibilities and expectations that are so much different than HS. It allowed me to transfer to Hofstra without any existing debt and I did so with almost ALL of my core distribution requirements (with the exception of math & science) completed and transferred. At the time of my transfer, Hofstra ACCEPTED all of my SCCC credits. As I look back on my undergraduate years, both at Suffolk and later at Hofstra, I really came to appreciate the TRUE value of what community colleges offer. They are especially effective for the undecided or the students of modest means. My younger brother followed me to SCCC three years later when I was junior at Hofstra and he DID graduate with his A.A. before eventually transferring to San Francisco State University where he received his B.A. I wish I knew back at SCCC my first semester what I came to know later. Had that been the case, I would have applied myself more, completed ALL the requirements for the A.A. and then transferred. What I can say now with many years of hindsight is that if I had it all over to do again, with the means I had then, I would gladly go back to SCCC with all its minor annoyances, do what needed doing and then transfer knowing that in the end, I would have gotten a great education at a bargain price and a lot less debt at the end of the process. To students who are graduating from Long Island high schools, especially those in Suffolk County who may be undecided, give SCCC a chance. In the end, you'll graduate with less debt and off to new adventures. read more

As far as community colleges go, well it's community college. Expect the demographic to be fresh-out-of-high-school to "seasoned" individuals. This can be a frustrating place if you're a serious student (you can hear peoples eyes rolling, if they're not out-and-out sighing so politely when you ask more than one question during a class) but I've found the professors are largely there for the students and will embrace any chance they can get to offer further insight should you ask. Class sizes are pretty small - compared to some of the monstrosities I've been in at StonyBrook - the labs and equipment are pretty dismal, though for the most part functional. Do whatever you can in regards to registration/bills/etc online, because the lines for these things range from in-and-out to hour-long slogfests when it's busy. When I had to redeem a voucher for my tuition (the simple act of handing over a paper and showing my ID) there was ONE window open during the operating hours. The Library also sucks - badly. Very limited selection of physical books (I don't think I've ever seen anyone in the shelves, looking for books that is) and it can be pretty loud even in the designated "quiet areas". They now have a jangley-keys security officer patrolling the areas, perhaps in an attempt to keep the volume down, or maybe just to stop people from scrawling "we f___ed in this cubie!" on the partitions. Its operating hours also stink. Closes early, so those of us who work while trying to further our education are forced to do it at home with all the distractions there that typically one needs to sequester themselves in a library to avoid. If you DO come in the evenings and stay until near closing, don't freak out when the lights suddenly go out - they're on motion detectors (maybe that's why the anonymous couple were getting freaky in the cubie? "But officer, it was the only way to keep the lights on!") Parking is also INSANE. I won't even go there. Show up early to get a spot. Try to get a spot next to someone with a nice car, since I'm assuming they will be less likely to slam their door into your car when getting in/out of the tight tight tight spaces. read more

I'm a full time student already in my third semester. During second semester I experienced the worst time of my life in school. One of my teachers threatened me for having a black plain hoodie in his class and I never understood why he did it, but obviously the way he did it was wrong in my opinion. It's a community college those kinds of things should not be happening and by the way I dropped out of the class before he was not the kind of teacher that I wanted to have around specially if you paying for school. read more

Parents..Do not send your child here. First off...everything is done online. Your child fills out an authorized paper for you to speak on their behalf. Its in the system, nut no one will talk to you. Only.want to talk about finances. Since I'm paying the bill. Your on forever hold. No one picks up. And if they do, they are nasty. Dont like your job, find a mew one. And forget it if you go down in person...your there for 3 - 4 hours on line or sit in a room with a number. This college is horrible. Scheduling wise, phone communication, teaching, etc. GO TO SUNY FARMINGDALE...totally different world. Your a person, not a number. SUFFOLK COMMUNITY COLLEGE you should be ashammed of yourselves telling future students how wonderful campus life there is. Parents...trust me. You want a better education for your child. If you did well in high school, you will do well here. If you were a slacker who skipped class and never did any work, then don't even waste your time. Save the classroom space for students who want to learn. Classes get filled up quickly and it's a shame when lazy students who sit there and sleep take up the last opening. The parking lots are crazy during peak hours between 10AM-3PM, but besides that it's alright. It's better for everyone if you carpool. The classes are very easy and most professors are very helpful. Just be careful around the administrative offices. They tend to scam you into taking more classes than you actually need by telling you wrong information, or will bill you wrongly. Stay on top of everything and keep track of what they bill you. They have great clubs for every single hobby/interest you can think of, so it's easy to make new friends there. You may not like it now, but you'll miss it when you graduate. I definitely recommend it for anyone who is going into college. read more

I went to the Brentwood campus and after graduation I was asked to work there. Seriously, the worst thing that I have done. They destroyed my life. They blackballed me so it would be harder to find a job with the degree that I got there. The security there ticket my vehicle three times while it was parked because I was in the red which is for the faculty which I was!!! Then PAUL MINTIO takes the tickets because he's the one that put those tickets on my vehicle and tells me that he'll take care of them. However, he never did instead I find out that I cannot get my transcript from there due to them lying and had the tickets switch to reckless driving from a parking ticket. They are evil people to work with and the don't waste your money going there trying to get your degree there either. If they don't like you then you will be harassed and then blackballed. I give them No stars for a horrible place like this!!! read more

I graduated Suffolk 30 yrs ago and went on to eventually get my MA degree.My sisters also got their start at Suffolk many years ago and eventually got their degrees as well. My daughter recently graduated Suffolk with her AA degree and she has been accepted into Stony Brook. Suffolk has a joint admissions program with the SUNY schools now and it is great. You take the required courses that will transfer over , graduate with your AA, keep your GPA up and you will be accepted into the four year institution. It has saved us a lot of money going to Suffolk first and my daughter has been able to avoid loans. We do not qualify for any financial assistance, so we needed to find an affordable way to do college. This college is also not "easy" in anyway. The courses are the same as they are in any expensive private college and the student does have to do the work. . I will never understand the negative comments I have heard about this school over the years. . The student needs to come here prepared to work, it is not an easy way to get a degree. Many of the programs they offer here are also very competitive, and are not easy to get into(such as the Vet tech program and nursing). I would definitely say that this community college is one of the best around. . I saw that 30 yrs ago and they have only gotten better over the years. read more

Yeah Suffolk CCC is a great school.Its easy to get your associates(professors are not harsh academically speaking)and theres a myriad of ways in which that you can get involved,if you so choose.Students are for the most part cooperative and friendly,and theres a definite sense of COMMUNITY wehich is what a community college is supposed to be.Extracirricular activites abound and clubs are great.A lot of good evening classes too,with many adult students returning to get their degree.campus is physically very attractive,and like I said the scholastics are not demanding by any stretch of the imagination but are challenging at the same time.Good branch to Stony Brook or Hofstra or Adelphi or wherever you want to go afterwards.Advisors(guidance counselours)are very in touch with the American educational system at least on the college level.Almost like a 4year school.I love SUFFOLK!!!!!! read more

This is the most disorganized school. Trying to register at this school made me not even want to go anymore. I heard the teachers are fantastic. I tried to get my student id even though I was already a student and they told me that I had to register for classes. So I tried to register and they were so incompetent I had to drive to Riverhead. I was in and out of Riverhead campus in 20 minutes. So I come back to Selden a different day to get my id and straighten out my financial aid and then they told me I had to pay for my classes first. But I can't pay for my classes unless I had help for my financial aid. And I can't go to financial aid without my id. So I went to financial aid even though I didn't have my id and I wanted some advice on what to do because my father is recently unemployed and I don't talk to my mom. She was not having it. She wouldn't even listen to me, she just shrugged her shoulders and told me that she didn't know how to help me. Just to get my mom's information because she's obligated by the government to help. THIS IS YOUR JOB. they all send you around in circles to the point where you don't even know what you need to do anymore. I refuse to ever go back to the Selden campus. It's too much of a hassle. I stand by Riverhead. Those people know what they're doing. I live in port Jeff and it's worth the drive. Less aggravation. Shout out to Riverhead campus. You always had my back. read more

I spent three years at Suffolk and it was a great school! I recommend it for anyone who needs a fresh start in college. It made me forget about all the horrors of Sachem High School North. Way to go, Suffolk! read more
