My child was bullied in this school, by other students and faculty. He came home with rug burn on his leg. Overrated school.

There isn't too much I have to say about this school than other reviews here, but I will tell you…read morethis: I feel like student reviews are more important than parent reviews, because students are the ones who have actually been there. We aren't rating this school one-star because we hate school in general- it's because this school is actually very, very flawed. The point system, in my opinion, is ridiculous- this school degrades you so badly that you can't even walk in the hallways by yourself unless you're in eighth grade AND level 2. The level system goes like this Level 1- Average of under 80 points a day Level 2- Average of 80-94 points a day Level 3- Average of 95 points a day Thing is, you can go from level 3 to level 1 in a week, and I think that is very unfair. And, to be honest, the level system feels like a hierarchy. Although you can say that level 1s are treated wrong because, well, they are level 1 for a reason- you'd be wrong. The point system is irrelevant to a lot of students anyways. And I'm not biased- this is coming from a level 3. Also, there are a lot of bullies here. Not in my class, but there are in other classes. There are a lot of bigoted kids here and the staff doesn't seem to do anything about it. If you try to defend yourself, you're going down a level, and this is a really terrible thing, because there are many depressed kids here. I've never been to ALR or bir, so I don't have much to say about that, but I can say that there have been multiple occasions in which staff has used physical restraint. This may be legal but it still isn't a good thing, and staff goes too far. They broke the wrist of somebody in my class and according to a review, another student from two years ago. Please don't have your kid go to this school! It does not help with mental health- it makes it worse. I've been here for barely three months, and I have way too many negative things to say about this place. Another thing is that externalized behavioral issues are treated differently than those with internalized anxiety, and some guidance counselors don't care about one students problem as it isn't as bad as another students.

Except punish me when I fought back. I was always told "You must have done something, no one just bullies someone for no reason." First, that BS. Secondly, I can apparently do something for no reason but the bullies they protect are a different story. In Junior high it was a daily thing. Even teachers like Mr.Mutter, science in Gelinas, would purposely lose my homework or projects and claim I never handed them in. In 9th i was put on home schooling, because it's easier to blame the victim in the eyes of the TVCSD. They didn't punish any of the bullies, just me. To this day I have to pay for going to the school. I take anti depression meds and anxiety meds. All which came from these schools. Lets also not forget how over paid most teachers are here and the little care they have in teaching.

Attended from 1987 to 1990…read more    In the late 1990s Ward Melville High School was my home away from home. It was a home that the Philanthropic Ward Melville donated. Ward Melville was a driven individual that played a pivotal role in creating Thom McCann and CVS. Additionally he donated land to institutions such as Stony Brook University and this very school Ward Melville High School.   If only I was as driven as Ward Melville in the late 1990s. If only I was as interested in academics as the brand new Nintendo Entertainment System that came out at the time, listening to the current hits on the radio such as "Kokomo," "Got My Mind Set on You," and "Welcome to the Jungle." To put it nicely I am a better Yelper than I was a high school student. To tell you the truth I got no motivation.    In hindsight, I was fortunate to have attended a beautiful high school. Ward Melville is the high school of the award winning Three Village School District. The highest level Three Village institution of learning is a picturesque sprawling building adorned in brick architecture that is surrounded by acres of grass. It is the antithesis of so many of the high schools throughout the country that resemble prisons. Ward Melville provided two floors of spacious and at the time modern classrooms. The sprawling campus included a state of the art swimming pool, library, and sports facilities.   The aspect of attending Ward Melville High School that I enjoyed the most was the open campus. I tried to plan my schedule so that there were two continuous periods off so that I could walk to the Old Town Road 7-Eleven around a mile to the south or the closer Barella's Farm Stand. The thing I really liked about the open campus was that I could step out and get fresh air. Unfortunately, from what people told me, they ended the open campus because a certain few people were abusing drugs.    I attended the Focus program. The Focus program gave motivation to students that were more interested in other things. It was a family of students who shared a bank of three courses led by one teacher each year. In addition to learning this family of students had a forum to discuss their problems. Some of these were far more heavy problems than a shy student that preferred Nintendo, listening to music, and walking outdoors than sitting in a classroom. In hindsight what I appreciated the most about Focus is that in an overwhelming environment of a large High School it provided a sense of community and a more personal approach to learning. The three different Teachers seemed to care about their academic family. In my opinion every High School should have a version of Focus.    Although the Focus program was great, I felt that the Guidance Counselors should of played a more pivotal part in my academic growth. It's as if I was under the radar. There definitely and I mean definitely should have been time spent in Guidance Counselor to student meetings preparing me for the future. What did I have a talent for? What were my strengths? This leads to the point that there should have been instruction helping students get a direction on what they were good at. Not every student was born an Honors student destined to be a Doctor or Ivy League school-trained Lawyer.   Generally speaking the Teachers were respectable talented instructors. Yeah, there were some jerks. But that was the minority.    Thirty years after graduating Ward Melville High School, the same school that WWE legend Mick Foley graduated from; I think to myself how much I miss being a young man with no bills sitting in a Ward Melville classroom and walking its hallways. I will never forget walking its Commons hearing Andy Gibb music the day after he died, talking to fellow students about the new Guns N Roses album "Appetite for Destruction" and walking to Barella's Farm Stand listening to George Michael's new song "Faith" on my Walkman. The greatest lesson that Ward Melville taught me was that it is important to live in the moment and not wish the time away. I rate my general time attending Ward Melville High School 3.5 Stars with the Focus program rounding it up to 4 stars.

I wanted my son to complete his first year before writing my review to see how the full school year went. This school has been great for us in so many ways. Our son who is now just over 2 has completed his first Stepping Stones year. His two teachers Ms. Celina and Ms. Lisa treat our son and his classmates as if they were their own children. The kids get a lot of care and attention. The classroom environment is a very positive and well organized one. Our son loves going there every single day, which makes life easier for us parents knowing our kid loves it there and is in great hands. The other families who attend there have been very welcoming and friendly. Within just 1 year we have become friends with many of the parents at the school and love hanging out with them outside of school. The staff really goes above and beyond for the children and parents. Whenever we visit the school, everyone's always in a great mood. If you're looking for a school where your kids won't get lost in the mix this is a perfect school. The school is also very safe - everyone there takes school safety very seriously which is so important these days. They even has a summer program for the children which is great. The school and parents do an awesome job with the events they organize for the students and parents. I've had the pleasure to get to know the Head of School, Meg Sheehan. She really cares about the students and the families that attend. She's very easy to talk to and is willing to do whatever it takes to guarantee the children and parents have an amazing experience there. All in all, great experience. We're looking forward to our son's next year at this school. Thank you so much NSMS for going above and beyond for us and everyone who attends your school.
