My three kids went to Kumon, from 2013 to August 2023…read more Academic success is supported and cheered for in our house, it is necessary for adult financial success. When my wife and I found out about Kumon in 2013, when the kids were 4, 6 and 9 years old, we figured we'd give it a try, a little boost to ensure academic success. Fast forward to the present - those "kids" are now 14, 16 and 19. The oldest is in SUNY Binghamton majoring in Mathematics. She likes math. She's getting As and 100s. She got a 1350 on her SATs. The middle kid is in all AP and Honors 11th grade classes and her GPA is 95. The youngest is in 9th grade with the AP and Honors courses and he's also at a GPA of 95. They excel academically. The best thing that Kumon does is it gets children accustomed to the idea that success is attained through hard work. They learn over the years that consistent hard work produces success. Kumon is not easy. Sometimes, yes, there will be stretches of familiar work, but difficult mathematical concepts will present themselves. Getting to where these concepts can be comprehended involves failure, frustration, and patience. Over time, it is learned that they can confront difficult problems and succeed. Always. This connection - hard work + consistency + patience = success ... this stays with them for life. This work ethic will enable them to master whatever is put before them. The academic confidence my kids have, the understanding that when confronted with an academic challenge, it is a pain in the ass, but with patience and work they will understand it, because they have been in this situation with Kumon hundreds of times before, and they know the drill and they anticipate their success with confidence. And in the end (which, for us, is when my kids stopped Kumon in the summers after 8th grade), you, as a parent, will end up with confident, patient, hard-working young adults who are readily able to confront academic challenges. They will be imbued with the ingrained understanding that with consistent hard work they can pursue anything they want to, academically or otherwise, with the self-assuredness of future success. This mindset is gold. P.S. it has to be an all-in whole family affair. You (and your significant other) have to help your child grind through challenges week in and week out. It is worth it.

I used Kumon many moons ago at the Bay Shore location back then. My son and the entire group in the…read moreschool he attended were behind because their 1st grade teacher didn't cover all the curriculum and the entire group was lacking many skills they should've acquire in that grade. Thus when the second grade teacher received them she knew then she had her work cut out for this school year. In a parents teacher meeting it was asked of us to find extra help to help her brings these kids up to level. I was recommended Kumon and went for it. If I can say that was the best decision I made for my struggling son; he thieved academically the rest of his school years and If I say my husband and I never had to help him with homework from there on, I'm not kidding. This child just took off on his own like a rocket, straight A student. Today he's a college graduate in computer science. He's a successful 30 going on 31 soon young adult. This week I register my struggling 12 year old grandson at the west Islip center and I have faith he will thrive as well. Mrs. Ahns was very sincere and firm with my grandson stating she knows he is trying but is lacking many skills. The way she addressed my grandson making him confident he will acquire those needed skills and more but he has to apply himself and follow rules, be organized, neat with his work, and have a positive attitude. She stated if you do all that you will be fine and will succeed. I liked Mrs. Ahns because she is old school and stresses those little basic things kids are lacking now a days; respect, posture, coming to learned prepared, neatness, application to what you do, positive attitude, focus. I will review again in a few months when I can see, again, how great is the Kumon system and how it will help my grandson.

Raj, who runs the Trumbull and North Haven center is very easy to work with as well. I like that they offer support classes but also classes for enrichment. My son, who's a bit mite advanced in both subjects, is no longer feeling unchallenged in school because he takes these classes in between! MATH: With today's changing times where elementary and middle schools are leaning toward the common core German method of teaching (like the more well known and reputable universities in our country!) I think a program like this is going to be critical to helping our children understand the fundamentals of math. Schools today may not be able to teach both with an aggressive/limited school schedule unlike foreign countries who attend school year round and have the proper time. I have already found my son living to solve math problems and testing himself on skills. Unprompted! READING: great to learn handwriting, reading technique. My son has always loved books but now I find he's also loves writing things for me to read. It's awesome. We also discovered in school he is a speed reader and enjoys long novels. These classes ares teaching him how to use words properly and also the various meaning to the same words. Including sound variations. Summary: well worth the investment.

My wife and I enrolled our oldest daughter at the age of 7 in order to supplement her education and giver her additional grade-level skills. At first, we were skeptical of the Kumon system since it required our daughter to start with rudimentary/basic lessons that we believed she knew. I struggled with watching my daughter have to repeat lessons that she already learned. We stuck with it and noticed a change in our daughters math abilities after 4 months. It was a small change but she was making connections about math that she struggled with before. My wife and I also had her enrolled in English. My daughter liked reading so this seemed unnecessary but we figured why not giver her the opportunity to challenge herself. This extra activity gave her the opportunity to practice understanding how different ideas are expressed in language and begin to read critically about what the protagnists or the event in the story. The system so far has delivered and a key component has been Eva at Kumon-Forest Hills. She is sensitive to childrens different capacities, provides encouraging and positive words and has a great staff of co-instructors that are kind and helpful to the students. I often see the co-instructors smiling and providing 1on1 support to the students. My oldest daughter started Kumon at 7 years old and has been doing it for 2 years+. My younger daughter is 5 years old and has been doing it for 1 year. I asked them why do they like Kumon, here is a list of what they told me; - Eva is a really good teacher - We like Rebecca, she is really nice - The tutors give me hints at how to figure out a problem, then I can figure it out on my own in a few seconds - I like all the books that you can take home I plan to enroll my girls in Kumon once we move this Summer. I want them to learn the habit of taking on a bit of extra work today that will help them tomorrow. I figure that if they do this for the next 10 years, by the time they reach high school and college, they will have the will power and self-motivation to succeed on their own.
