I went to St James Place because a lot of the reviews said that James is experienced with curly hair, but I will not be returning. I went once in December, and the cut was okay, but not as good as my last stylist out of state. I went again yesterday, and it was a disaster. I clearly told him at the beginning of my appointment that I wanted shoulder length hair with definite layers, because my curl pattern gets weighted down with too much length. Somehow what he took from that was keep the length, barely do any layers, and frizz it up like it's the 1980s. I asked him towards the end of the appointment again to layer it so that it frames my face more, and he berated me for not saying what I meant. He did add layers, but in a way where I just have this chopped off section next to my face, and he cut it to a point in the back. My hair feels heavy and stringy; not at all like it normally feels right after a hair cut. All that would have been frustrating enough, but to make matters worse, the whole time he was cutting my hair he was going on and on about how good he is at listening and how he knows what I want. He said at the end of the appointment that I could come back in the next few days if anything needed to be fixed, but quite frankly, I never want to let that man near my head with a pair of scissors again. read more

James has got to be the best hairdresser in Milwaukee, hands down. Having grown up in Milwaukee, I have hopped around at several salons over the years, but since having found James, I will not see anyone else when I'm home to visit. In fact, scheduling a haircut is a must for me every time I am in town. I have wavy to curly hair and it seems to me that this is his specialty. My hair always grows out beautifully from his cut as well. The salon is definitely avant garde and not for those looking for a typical hairdressing experience. James works solo so there's only one chair in the salon and he has an orchestra of live birds in the back to serenade you through your haircut. He is very careful about choosing the products he works with and all the items for sale in the shop are very high-end and good quality. Long story short, he magically turned my "growing out bangs" phase into an effortless look. I thought I had 6 more months to go before I could rock the no bangs look. Not so! Also: curly hair. He has topnotch German color that only got more vibrant, more shimmery, and more saturated through the weeks- it's been 4 weeks and I'm still happy as a clam. He allows your personality and lifestyle to dictate the color. We went with a "shadow" effect to give me the bad-ass deep maroon I desired without compromising my professional work life. Meaning: I still, 4 weeks later, have people complimenting me. Even my own children exclaim: Oh! There's more color in there! 3. Ever since moving to Milwaukee 8 years ago, I have taken my thick, wavy hair to other cities (New York, Boston, San Francisco or Los Angeles) for a haircut. It's been a drag, but every time I thought, no, I'm being paranoid, there must be *someone* who can cut non-straight hair well in Milwaukee ... and I would try a salon, only to find that my hair had been butchered by someone who really couldn't cut my hair. Enter James ... I have a trip in 2 weeks to Copenhagen and my hair had really really gotten out of hand (last cut was 10 months ago in LA) .. who I chose after he popped up in response to my Yelp search for thick wavy hair. I had very low hopes. I got to the building and could see Coquette Restaurant and a doughnut store (Holey Moley) and a purse store as I entered, but I could not see a salon. Tip: The purse store is James' salon. He cuts in the back surrounded by lots of clutter (I'm a minimalist), but it doesn't matter, because he really listened to what I wanted and was very careful to check in with me throughout the haircut. By the way, he will cut your hair dry and then wash it afterwards, which worked really well, but could be a surprise for some.
