Worst haircut I've ever had. I told the stylist I wanted a trim but ended up with 3 inches off in some areas. I say that specifically because my haircut is extremely UNEVEN- the stylist didn't pay attention to my curl patter or how my hair laid. It looked so much different from normal when I left because of the "curl defining technique" they used, but when I did it on my own, I noticed how BAD it is. There's basically a shelf like layer of my top resting hair with a gap between the rest of it, I can't wear my hair down now without feeling self conscious. I had been growing out my hair for years and now I've taken huge steps backwards because of this. I will never be returning. read more

I have Yelp to thank for leading me to Freya Salon and to my stylist, Emma, who is absolutely fantastic. I can't believe it's taken me so long to post this review! When I first moved to Milwaukee, I had no idea where to go to get a good haircut. I live on the east side, so I feel like I'm surrounded by cheap places that I'm [perhaps unreasonably] scared to go to (such as The Cutting Group), Aveda salons (e.g., Neroli), and barber shops. I tried an Aveda salon in Brookfield the first month or so we were here, and I had to accept that Aveda products do absolutely nothing for me. I also felt like the girl was a little inexperienced to be working on my unruly tresses. At one point, I went with my sister-in-law at a different salon for her haircut, and I ended up begging them to trim my hair because I needed it so desperately. Needless to say, an hour later the guy was STILL cutting my hair, and I felt like crying. Enter Yelp. I went by reviews and searched and searched, until finally I narrowed it down between Freya and another salon (whose name I can't remember). Everyone who reviewed Freya had nothing but kind things to say about the salon and its stylists (who actually own the business together), so I took a deep breath, called the salon, made an appointment with Emma. I could go on and on about how fantastic Emma is, how she's an artist who really listens to me when I explain what I want done with my hair, and how she has gone above and beyond a typical stylist in so many ways. Rather than do that, though, I will tell you that she's excellent, and you should go there immediately and get a haircut. Molly cuts the husb's hair, and she gives him the best haircut of his life every time he goes to her. Stephanie cleaned up my hair when I got a bad cut while Emma was on maternity leave, and she did a great job, as well. Everyone is so nice and good at what they do! :) read more

I really, really, really hate to be the one to disrupt the constant flow of 5-star reviews, but I gots to be that person. I came to Freya on the high recommendation of a coworker. With glowing 5-star reviews up and down the page, I was actually excited to spend a good chunk of money ($80) on a haircut. I have wavy hair that doesn't know what to do with itself, and I came for a Deva cut. Learning the Deva system has been extremely helpful. I've found the way to harness my natural ringlets. Too, I know what to do to my hair so I don't have to spend forever styling and perfecting the curls in the morning. That's swell and great. But the cut itself is plain horrendous. It's the most uneven haircut I've ever had, including the cheap, cheap, cheap haircuts that cost $6 and those haircuts done by students. Even when I use everything to have it be curly and it curls, one of the sides is 1/2 an inch longer than the other. It's noticeably shorter, and this started about 1 week after I had my appointment. I get that hair grows in different rates, but after a week!? I think it just took my that long to notice exactly what was so off. It didn't look quite right even the next day. I'd rather drive up to my hometown, go to my long-time stylist, and pay for the gas and cost of the cut than pay to have it cut locally here. Everyone was perfectly lovely. I wouldn't prevent anyone from going, but I personally will not be back. read more

This is the fourth salon I've been to in Milwaukee and by far my favorite. I believe most if not all of their staff can do Deva Curl cuts. Jason taught me everything I needed to know about haircare. The staff here is amazing, they always answer the phone and get me in for appointments at my preferred times, and there's ample parking off of Kinnickinnic. Kay has become the "go-to" stylist for me and all of my curly friends. We all have fabulous, photo-worthy curly hair now and it's weird (after 30+ years of haiting my hair) to have people stop me at Trader Joe's and ask my what hair salon I use and products, et c. Super in love with the chill atmosphere, wine, and product selection. They also have a nail studio, but I've already got a manicurist near my house. Freya is worth the 18 mile drive, which says a lot. If Kay ever moves, I'll relocate states to keep her cutting my hair! read more

I came to Freya looking for color correction after three disastrous attempts at a new look from another top-rated salon in Milwaukee. I left the initial consultation feeling good about Kay - she listened, made knowledgeable suggestions and was very realistic about what I could expect not only with a first appointment, but the next few down the line to undo the damage in both tone and over-processing. I went in today for the color correction and left even more impressed than I was at the consultation. Kay was able to dial back the too-blonde spots, give the new color dimension and make the line from a badly done balayage ombre disappear. I feel like she really understood what I was hoping to achieve - low-maintenance roots, blending the gray I'm getting at my temples and subtle highlights - and had the skill and eye to pull it off. Kay is absolutely worth the two hour round trip and I'm so happy to have found a salon and stylist to call home. read more

All I can say is WOW! I found Freya after doing a search for salons in the Milwaukee area that are Deva Curl certified, and then followed up with reading Yelp reviews. My hair is naturally thick, curly, and haircuts can easily become a disaster when the person with the scissors doesn't know what they are doing with curly hair- ESPECIALLY since mine also straightens easily. I called on Thursday and was able to get in with Molly for a cut, highlight, and gloss for Friday at 6pm. For someone who travels for work as much as I do, being able to get into see your stylist that quick is a total plus. It may be because it was the Friday before Halloween and people were out at parties, but for a salon with this many raves, I was impressed. Nothing worse than needing a cut and color, and having to wait for two weeks. Another plus? They offer text message reminders about your appointment, which is SO much more convenient than a phone call and/or voicemail! I arrived for my appointment and was offered coffee, tea, beer, or wine while I waited. While I really would have loved a beer, if I had accepted, I knew it would probably be the longest cut in history with me having to use the bathroom every two seconds. Molly listened to exactly how I described wanting my hair to look! I'm used to my highlights being covered over with color so that they blend in, but she used gloss, which made my hair SO shiny and soft. As she was washing my hair, she thoroughly explained how Deva recommends washing curly hair, and drying it once out of the shower. Oh, while we were waiting for the gloss in my hair, she waxed my eyebrows and they are freaking fantastic too- no big red blotchy spots or anything! Since I occasionally blow dry my hair straight (especially in the winter) we didn't do a Deva cut, but Molly explained what I should do before coming in for one, which I'll probably do once the weather gets warmer again. BRRRRRR, was it chilly when I left! She did part of the cut wet, dried my hair, and then finished the cut before using a straight iron. Usually when a stylist uses a straight iron, I have my hair tie back in my hair in two seconds flat, because I look like I have a mullet. Not with this cut! The layers in my hair all fell together perfectly. The highlights in my hair are barely noticeable (what I wanted) and give the impression that each strand is different and I'm in love with the color! Some other things I really love about Freya? All the stylists are owners of the salon, and not just renting a chair from someone. Molly sent me home with some samples of the products she used in my hair to try at home, rather than pushing me to buy them that night, which honestly, I will probably go back and buy because I love how they work! Molly was super nice so easy to get along with and talk to- even for this tired gal who has been on the road non-stop for the past 6 months and hasn't been her usual chatty self lately. Maybe a little weird ... but I appreciated the magazine selection too - some salons only have trashy magazines, but Freya had Dwell, Travelers Magazines, etc. Molly did my hair, a cut and highlight. 4.5 stars actually My ex boyfriend told me that my 'perfectionist disorder' causes me to be a commitment phobe... this might also apply to the relationships I've had with hair salons over the past year. Right now I feel like I'm casually dating a few different stylists. After having "some space" from Freya, they tempted me to come back with a 25% off your next visit coupon. Since I'm a slut for good value, I decided I was going to cheat on my most recent interest and spend some time at Freya. I called requesting Emma because she has always been very professional, but she only had morning availability. Mornings? No thanks. So I asked which other stylists there are at the master level and had openings in the afternoon... Joseph was available. I showed up 30 minutes early and they offered me a beer or wine. Now we're talking! Opted for the beer. Spent a bit of time going through magazines so I'd be prepared to show Joseph some pics and talk about my desires. He knew what I wanted but steered me clear of some of the looks I liked since they would set me back if I was going to try and grow my hair out. I REALLY appreciate that he listened to my needs, but was still firm about NOT doing certain things I suggested. This showed me that he also had a vision and wasn't going to let me dominate the experience and sacrifice his creative knowledge and expertise. I also asked him for another beer and he said no (sad face)... Like Emma, he was also quiet... and as always, I was the jabber mouth. So, I asked him how he was feeling, and he said that he wasn't feeling well because of allergies. I decided not to take it personally that the conversation was one way. Being an artist as well, I can understand how some personalities prefer to get into their zone and aren't as chatty. I was really happy with my cut. I think Joseph put a bit too much product into my hair and the settings on his hairdryer and straightening iron were dangerously hot, but the next time I see him, I'l just let him know that. I know it's cliche, but I, like other reviews, would call my Deva cut life-changing. For years, I've struggled with thick, frizzy hair of an uncertain texture, that was big, and tough to brush/comb, but didn't seem to be particularly curly, to me. After getting one too many triangle-head haircuts at other places, I somehow stumbled into Josef's capable hands, and he gave me the best haircut I've ever had. He cut my hair dry (this has never happened before!) and gave my hair a great shape. Then, he taught me how to wash/style my hair myself, to get my hair looking its best. And guess what - it's curly! My hair has been impossible to style for years, and now, I get compliments on it all the time. Nobody believes my hair was just this curly all along. It was kind of an expensive haircut, but well worth it, because I actually like my hair, for the first time in years. I've had plenty of mediocre-to-terrible haircuts in other salons around town. I've never FELL IN LOVE with my hair cut and color until Stephanie did my hair is perfect!!! I've got complimented by 5 strangers at the mall the same day! Oh yehhhh! :) I'm not very picky but I know when someone's doing a good job or not. I'm very happy Stephanie did my hair! I went to this salon for the first time a few days ago - also my first Deva cut! - and absolutely loved it. The salon itself has a cute artistic vibe with exposed brick and hanging plants, and the staff is sweet and knowledgeable (almost every single stylist is deva curl certified!!). I saw Jason and really loved him. I take really good care of my curls but struggle to make it stay all ringlet-y after more than 24 hours. Basically I have styling issues. I was blown away with the advice and styling tips Jason shared with me that I never knew. My curls received more attention and pampering than they ever have before - and they are super happy! I also asked for balayage (also from Jason) and think he did a wonderful job there too. My visit was expensive, but I have to point out that deva cuts across the board aren't cheap, so I can't say this salon in and of itself is more expensive than another. All the way around I'm a convert both to this salon and this deva cut method. read more

I wanted to love this place as much as other reviewers. It was my first time here and worst haircut of my life. I've had many dry haircuts, but this was totally botched, and not subtly, but VERY uneven. The stylist did not bother to measure the cut at all. He also was very impatient and didn't have any helpful ideas for a cut. I called back to see if I could get it fixed. They squeezed me in, which was great. However, he spent a whole two minutes trying to fix it, and again did not measure my hair. In fact I had to show him where it was uneven. His styling tips were helpful, but bottom line, is that I'm here for a cut. If you can't cut it at the very least in an even fashion, I'm not coming back. It's too bad. read more

This is a review for Abigail. I started following Abigail on Instagram and was immediately awed by her creativity and talent. Over the past several years I have been losing my hair and finally decided to embark in the wig world. Seemed simple enough - just buy a wig and have no fuss dream hair in an instant, right? WRONG!! Turns out very few people have the skill to cut a wig and make it look natural. Plus, I wanted something cool and edgy, which is RARE in the wig world. I've literally spent thousands of dollars, endless hours, and had my hair pieces cut multiple times by multiple stylists and still wasn't happy with them. I decided to make an appointment with Abigail because she possessed the qualities that I was looking for in a stylist and had experience in wig cutting. Man am I glad I did! After looking for a salon I can call home, I've finally found one! I was greeted warmly the minute I walked in. I relaxed with a cup of tea while I waited for my appointment to begin. I was appointed with the stylist Joseph. He made me feel comfortable from the very beginning! I learned so much from him and my style is awesome!!! The exposed cream city brick mixed with modern, art deco and instutrial style decor. I know that sounds crazy but when you are paying $50.00 for a haircut I figure you might as well love everything about it. I think the business model is fantastic. All the stylist are owners and built the place from the ground up. Emma does a fantastic job. I recomment her. Freya is a fantastic salon! I have been trying to find a new stylist for a while. My last two haircuts (at 2 different salons) and highlights/color weren't the greatest to say the least. Very uneven hair - specifically choppy and hacked, and ugly brassy highlights, not to mention the placement of the highlights was totally weird. I have very thin, fine hair and it is cut short - so I need someone who knows what they are doing. Freya is THE salon! The salon decor is very cool. They have art from local artists for purchase on the walls. The receptionist was friendly and offered me wine! Molly cut my hair. She is great. Super nice, funny and easy to talk to. More importantly, she totally hooked me up with the best haircut I have had in a LOOOONG time. She also fixed my color by putting a toner on it. It looks much better. She did not push products on me, but instead offered me a sample of what she used in my hair so I could try it out before buying it. A nice touch. This salon is FANTASTIC!! Great customer service and friendly staff. Easy to make an appointment and very accommodating to ones schedule. I saw Tess and she is an amazing stylist. I went in for some "creative color" I got my hair ombre styled, dark brown on the top and chestnut on the bottom. She did such a beautiful job. I was impressed at how diligent she worked; paying attention to every detail but still very friendly and fun. After my color Tess gave me a beautiful hair cut with long layers and a great blow out. I have finally found my new Milwaukee stylist. While I was there another gal came in for a consultation with another stylist. She had self dyed her hair and it looked awful. I loved the way the other stylist conducted himself informing her of her options but being very realistic about what he was able to achieve. I felt as though I could trust every stylist at the salon with my hair. I can't say enough good things about Tess and Freya salon. I will be going here for as long as I live in Wisconsin. They also have a great product selection with a knowledgeable staff. I can't wait for my next haircut and fun style. I have had Molly cut my hair the past couple of times and she does a great job listening to what you want and carrying through with it. I recently had my hair cut into a long bob and I love it. She also did an amazing job covering up some of the new gray hairs that have popped up over the past year. Emma is great for a Brazilian Wax! I just moved to Milwaukee from Florida and reside in the Bay View area. Freya is close to me and the reviews indicated good things, so I thought I'd try it. The place is hip and CLEAN, which is important. Emma uses hard wax, which I have been a skeptic of since I hate the picking. However, Emma has changed my mind completely! It was quick enough and she knew a lot about the method behind Brazilian waxing and educated me on products to use in between waxings. The best part? She did not pick at all! She informed me she hated that part of it as well and had gone to education classes to find better methods, which is plus! Trying out the hair scene there this week! read more

I wanted something new and didn't really have an idea of what to do, so Katie made some knowledgable suggestions and although I was weary of the drastic change (cut super straight bangs), I trust her so I said go for it . I LOVE THE CUT! It fits what I'm looking for perfectly. And she always says if I don't like something to come back and she'll fix it. I also really appreciate that they don't push products on the customers, but if you ask they will suggest ones that fit what you're looking for. I've also been told if I do not like the product, I can return it. Another nice refill option---20% off shampoo/conditioner if you bring your old bottles (eco friendly and affordable). Did a bunch of research on the DevaCurl and Deva cut before deciding on this salon. I was reluctant to drop the money on myself, but after reading up, it seemed worth it. Freya salon is a certified DevaCurl salon with at least 4 stylists trained in this cutting style. They had rave reviews despite only 2 examples on their site of this style. I am VERY picky when it comes to my curly hair due to a lifetime of ridicule. I was booked with Kay. On their website Kay appears to be a vibrant out of towner who has made Milwaukee her home. She is VERY knowledgeable about the Deva style and was able to offer me pointed tips and tricks for my hair. She did not try to upsell or convince me to get more than I needed. End result? A great cut, reasonable maintenance plan, and follow-up. Price was better than expected too! I will be back! read more
