Adorable Little Gift Shop with various rooms filled with various items. Ornaments, books, candies etc. It was a quiet day but had people trickling in and out. Woman at the counter was polite but curt. While the building was amusing because of its age it felt like a well stocked tourist shop. Beautiful store. They sell a variety of things from home decor, tea sets, children's toys, books and Christmas ornaments. Ebeneezer Smith (founder of the store) is a descendant of Richard Smith (Founder of Smithtown). Ebeneezer built the store in 1857. He died in 1884 and left the store to his son Everett Smith. It was nice to see old/vintage items and the history hanging on the walls. The store was beautifully decorated with period pieces. The old charm was there. I stayed a while looking at everything. There was a lot to look at. I easily spent over $50 here (only buying two things). I didn't mind since what I bought from here is one of a kind. A tip: there are no public bathrooms here. Also, there's additional parking with a sign with its hours of operation. Pricing is high, but reasonable. The first time I came, I just browsed around for a bit. I took note of what I liked and did research on it to check for prices and such. After a week of finding nothing better in price or anything similar in fashion, I realized that it was one of a kind and unique...so I went back and bought it :) I recommend visiting this store. Established in 1857 by Ebenezer Smith, who was a descendant of the founder of Smithtown, this is one of the oldest general stores in the US. The oldest is Gray's General Store in Rhode Island, established in 1788. Today, as it has done since the second half of the 20th century, the store has sold various late-Victorian-era artifacts. The second floor contains old books and children's toys related to Long Island history. I loved perusing and learning trivia about such niche and random villages and towns. The first floor is more sporadic, ranging from fall decoration to jewelry to purses to candles to candy to home decor to greeting cards. The prices are a little high, but reasonable, if you find something you love. I got a little cinnamon-scented candle for $7 and a fake garnet ring from their birthstone ring collection for $4. The candle burned for about ten hours, and the ring broke easily a week later. Oh, well. Service is nothing special. They're just there to ring you up. The vibe is cozy and colorful, though. read more

I've been here twice so far. Once with my dad before work and once with my son. I love this store. They have such an assortment of different things, fresh baked cookies, candy, a whole upstairs level full of Christmas stuff, old fashioned toys for children, candles, lavender, and many different items too many too name. My family and I have been going to the general store for over 25 years on Christmas Eve. I'm very sad to say it will no longer be our tradition. My 3 year old cousin needed to use restroom and when we asked she was told no, they don't allow customers to use the restroom! My family and I are paying customers. She is a 3 year old little girl literally crying because she has to go to the bathroom. They suggested we take her to a gas station, which would be extremely hard for me to do being I had my handicapped 92 year old great grandmother. How could anyone treat a child that way. Horrible! Oh how I love this shop!! A necessary staple to Saint James that will hopefully be here for ever and ever. This is a wonderful place to stop in and browse if you are in the are. The selection of stock they carry is incredible. There is something for everyone and every occasion! Weddings, animals lovers, golfers, baby's/children/ moms and dads, gardeners...the list just goes on! They usually will stock for the season which is always fun. The candy that is offered is unlike candy you can find anywhere else! The prices are comparable to home goods as well which is always a plus! My 3 year old son and my father took and small trip to the store (and I mean about 30 minutes) we were very excited. my son had to use the restroom on the way there. once we got there, we asked to used the restroom before shopping. The 2 old nasty ladies told us no. I said "hes 3" she then said it doesnt matter, he cant use the restroom. Stating only the workers can. we then left obviously. its a shame we would have spent at least 50 dollars. Once a tiny town with one traffic light, full of small family owned farms. Still stands this historic landmark. Opened in 1846 by the Smith family, this store still has its original charm and character Christmas time the store decorates for Christmas the entire second floor. Candies of every kind fill the class jars, hand made soaps, delicate towels, wooden children's toys. A real threat for children or adults wanting a sneak back into time. House wares, dolls candles are sold here while old items are up high for display. This is a cool "turn back the hands of time" working general store from the 1800's. They sell the traditional "old-timey" candies in big jars, but they also have a huge assortment of specialty gifts. My most favorite time to go to the general store is before Christmas. Head to the back of the store, make a right and go up the rickety stairs to the second floor. Their Christmas tree displays are spectacular. You can buy individually sold hand-painted ornaments or the typical boxed variety. It's a tradition now that every year I buy a few ornaments and write the year I purchased on the bottom. Don't hesitate, go check out this place which is actually run by Suffolk County Dept of Parks. Very nice friendly place. It is a shop filled with knick knacks and AWESOME cookies!!!!!! With a lot of our history disappearing it was nice to see this place still up and running. They still have the original post office counter inside the store, as well as the old huge icebox that is the size of the wall.. They also have a decent number of other antiques on display. The store is nicely decorated with the knick knacks for sale depending on the season of the year. When I went it was decorated for Halloween. Would like to go back closer to Christmas to see it and of course get some more cookies!!!!!!!! read more

Okay I don't know about the cookies from the 1970's- When I was a kid all I wanted was molasses paddle and a bottle of coke in the glass, from the open and close self serve machine located out front. It has seen a lot of changes over the years.The old house used to be that- an old house owned by a Smith "the Bull" family. Its been there as long as Millers Pond and the like in Smihtown. This area doesn't exist any more- not like it was. Perhaps its the times, perhaps its all too close to the LIRR, who knows, Perhaps, its just a economic squeeze.What ever no one can take away great memories. Cute little place on Moriches road in St.James/Smithtown. We first discovered it when visiting relatives on Long Island last year, and now when we return we always want to stop in for some old timey candy and to see all the unique and cool stuff they offer for sale. Homemade jam, fudge, various christmas ornaments, postcards, kids toys, you name it, it's probably in there. Not the type of place to pick up a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread but that's ok. For what it is, you will be very happy. Check it out! Oh, they close at 5 pm daily so get there early or you'll miss out. read more

We were there yesterday, May 10th, Mothers Day. When we pulled up we weren't sure they were opened because the sign outside said closed. I thought that was strange considering it was 4pm on a holiday. From the attitude of the woman behind the counter, she seemed as if we were bothering her. Gave my partner a rude response and when he asked for a particular item that was nearest to the other salesperson she told us "you tell her" in a very not old-fashioned tone. I used to go here as a child in the late 70's early 80's (of the 20th Century, that is); and I remember getting these FANTASTIC chocolate chip cookies there; they were always slightly mysterious. My Mom would have us sit in the car, and she would run in, and come back out with a little bag, and she usually only had a couple of cookies in there (I suspect she gobbled one or two while still in the store, but whateva!). I remember her telling us that the store said an old lady baked them and wouldn't give away her recipe. They were so luscious and filled with rich chocolate - maybe they were chocolate chunks in the cookies. I went back there a couple of years ago, and the staff smiled when I inquired about the cookies, and they said a lot of people had asked about them, but they didn't know anything about the cookies or the baker. Does anyone out there remember this too? In any event, the General Store is worth a look, lots of souvenir type items and penny candies there for sale, and the store has the creaky boards and museum smell of an old building.
