Awesome spot in Byron bay. The lighting is fantastic, the vibe is chill, and the staff is amazing. This place is super popular - best to reserve ahead during high season. We got really lucky at 8.45pm and scored two seats at the bar. The dishes are tapa style. Great for sharing. MUST HAVE: Anchovies with eggplant, peppers, and toast - the anchovies came in a can but it was amazing with the eggplant and roasted pepper and jalapeño pepper. The right balance of soft textures and a kick from the jalapeño pepper. Quite delicious. Scallops with polenta - beautiful presentation. I think I would like a bit less polenta but very fresh. The pesto sauce on top was excellent. SOLID: Serrano ham with toasted bread with tomato paste - how could one say no to Serrano ham? Chocolate tart with hazelnut lemon cream with crumbles. The chocolate tart was moist and balanced with the acidity of hazelnut lemon cream. Pork belly and chorizo sausages - solid dish. Order when you still have stomach left to digest the fatty part of this dish. Ceviche with king fish and cucumber. This could use a bit more lime and the chips are not as crunchy (probably due to the seaside humid air) but still fresh and the fish tasted like sashimi grade! SKIP: Calamari with tartar sauce and cucumber - this is dish is a bit on the heavy side For wines by the glass, I would recommend cava and Albariño. read more

I am still dreaming about the ambiance, the cocktails and the delicious Spanish food. All gin & tonics need to be served the way they serve them. A Spanish gem in the middle of Byron and better than most of the meals I had in Barcelona. On a random weekday night, it was pretty busy so I would recommend making a reservation if you can. Also, the kitchen closing time was variable based on how busy they were so that was a bit odd. Thankfully they accommodated me. Onto the food! The pan con tomate was major heart eyes! It was more like pan con tomate and jamon serrano. Overall it was excellent. Arroz con gambas is reminiscent of a paella. Very, very good. Patatas bravas were also quite flavorful. I really loved all the dishes and my drinks. I can't how good the other items I missed out on were. St. Elmo, if I'm ever in Byron again, I will be back! read more

I love Spanish and tapas restaurants. You're guaranteed to find a great wine list, interesting bites, and innovative cocktail list. It's my fail-safe place to eat besides the French when I can find it. So when I read about St. Elmo, I was ready to put a pretty dent on my credit card. I came early (4:30pm) and ready to get my wine fix. The bar was open and I was the first customer in the restaurant but the staff was super cool and welcoming about it. I spent an hour trying several glasses of their reds. Then I worked up an appetite to their tomato bread. The tomato bread was unexpectedly good. It reminded me of a tomato bisque painted onto a tender toast. I don't know what I was expecting but it hit the spot. They finally started serving food around 5:30pm so I decided to give their scallops a try. Amazing! I really enjoyed the sociable staff and was told their cocktails are often innovated by the staff in the restaurant which is pretty cool. I love Byron's food scene. I was beginning to wonder having traveled from Cairns to Gold Coast and not really finding innovative menus, but there's plenty of innovation and inspiration here. read more

Best restaurant in Byron Bay. Great all round. I once got stuck in Byron on a work day and hung out with the staff as they made me feel at home with a temporary office on a table there. Not once did they put me under pressure to buy anything (though I did). Superb wine list with knowledgable staff and owners. Good tapas style food in addition to standard menu. If you are on a special date in Byron, take him or her to St Elmo and you can't go wrong. The owners own Targa round the corner which is also excellent thought the menu in St Elmo is still my favorite. read more

A stone throw away from our hotel, we walked to this hip and trendy restaurant on a cold winter night at Byron Bay! Definitely a spot worth recommending to locals and visitors alike. This well appointed tapas restaurant adds a delightfully new dining experience to the Bryon eating scene. A modern and inviting fit out provides good bones for the appealing ambience. The open plan feel is delightful as is the flow through air. There is a touch of flamboyance in the welcome which is well accompanied by modern language and some casual and cheeky humour .... on the two occasions we dined the experience was consistent and a mild differentiator. The food is good....we ventured across the wide menu and had pleasure with all the dishes. Some dishes we really thought deserved special acknowledgement and include the Ensalada de pepino, a salad of cucumber, fennel and so on with a tasty lime dressing, the Bocadillo, the soft shell sliders and the Arroz con pollo with chorizo...this slow cooked chicken which was tender, tasty and truly delicious...it was just right....and it is true to say there were other fine dishes too. Good wine to match the occasion and as we left we agreed it was a dining experience with a step up in more formal service and delicious food that was served with passion. Outstanding. We've eaten at great restaurants all over the world, and this is the best we've had in quite a while. Accommodating staff, good service, an interesting and creative menu with well matched wine list, and well-timed food service. The sharing plates are definitely on the small side, but every dish we had was spot on. We had: - pan tomaquet (Catalan tomato bread) (deceptively simple-looking, but perfectly executed with clearly high-quality ingredients) - seared bacon-wrapped scallops with sweet corn puree and salted caramel popcorn (I was not sure about the popcorn, but it made the flavours of the dish really... pop. Perfectly cooked scallops.) - patatas con salsa verde (beatifically fresh tasting ingredients, we enjoyed this dish but it wasn't quite as inventive or outstanding as the others) - baby chorizo with slow-cooked pork belly (of all the delicious dishes, this was the stand-out) Between the two of us we were comfortably satisfied with these 4 and decided not to over-indulge, but we could have fit in another dish or dessert. You had me at 5 types of G&Ts on the menu. We had the tasting menu and it was incredible. I could have gnawed in the lamb bones forever. [Only quick feedback: two of us ordered the the chef's menu and a couple of the dishes, notably the lamb, came with odd numbered pieces that were awkward to divide up.] Thank you! I recently spent some time in Australia on vacation and decided to get away from Sydney for a few days. I bounced up to Byron for a few days. In the town, I found myself looking for a change of pace from the holiday crowds, cheap drinks, and general beach-touristy vibe. I came across St. Elmo, and was blown away. The meal I had would have been at home in the finer places in New Orleans, San Francisco, or Atlanta. The wait staff was helpful, friendly, and sincere. The overall feel was much more upscale and urbane from the spring breakness of Byron. This was a nice escape around the corner from the main street, and if I ever find myself back in BB, I'll be sure to seek refuge there. So disappointing. After 2 fabulous dinners in Byron, we dined at St Elmos and were massively underwhelmed. Whilst some dishes were tasty, ( prawns and ceviche) they were seriously over priced for the servings. Other dishes, the mushrooms, were not hot and quite bland, and the pear salad was totally disgusting. Beware the Sunday surcharge, the credit card surcharge and the attitude some some staff. I really wanted to go to this place for about two years, and only got around to it a few weeks ago. The atmosphere is beautiful, as is the decor, but the food however...not so much. We ordered a lot from the menu and shared it around as you do, but the combinations (however enticing they may sound) just didn't work well together. Sometimes simplicity in food is the best way. You can embellish upon simple, but you can't cover up a bad combo by arranging it fancy on a plate and charging a lot. I really enjoyed the food and cocktails here. I had a gin cocktail with a fresh sprig of rosemary, gin infused with mediterranean herbs, and slices of fresh peach. We had a selection of tapas that were fantastic. Everything that comes out of the kitchen has great presentation and flavor. Nice atmosphere as well. read more

On our last night of a lovely holiday we decided to try this place. It was very disappointing. The service was poor, it felt like we'd been forgotten. The food and the price of the food was ridiculous! One of the dishes was a toasted sandwich, with the crust cut off. It cost over $12 from memory. The brisket was so bland and the other two dishes we ordered were tiny. Yep, I get that it is tapas, but the serving sizes were just silly. We ended up eating toast when we got home as we were still starving! Avoid this place at all costs. read more
