I did not know this pla e even existed. It is a animal reserve that takes all kind of animals from various sources. The animals range from seized to surrender animals and many more. You can look up Florida Kodiak bears and you'll find those bears here. All the animals have various stories and you can see from the interactions with the caretakers and the animals that there's a bond. It was a very informative exhibit and it was great to hear the wolves howling back at our group after we had howled. Unfortunately you can't take pictures, but I like being in the moment as well. You can purchase a flash drive that contains a power point with over 400 slides explaining the stories of the animals.

For an up-close look at exotic animals, check out the St. Augustine Wild Reserve. This nonprofit sanctuary was established in 1995 as a care center for rescued exotic animals. Mountain lions, bears, ligers and leopards are just some of the animals housed here. Notable residents have included five arctic wolves and an African lion that once belonged to Michael Jackson. The guides did a good job trying to get the animals active during the tour. They also did a great job explaining how the animals came to the reserve. They won the esteemed title of Best Animal Encounter in the Jacksonville area in 2020 and 2022! We highly recommend this tour when looking for something to do with your family when In St. Augustine. Your visit helps the reserve provide a safe environment for these animals. Tours are by appointment only. ~ Visit SAWildReserve.org to learn more about their nonprofit and how to visit! The new manatee habitat is gorgeous, and allows people to enjoy these gorgeous mermaid potatoes while they're treated and rehabilitated. The weather is the only negative, so plan accordingly with sunscreen, fans. hats, rain ponchos, money for the Kona Ice and Dippin' Dot vendors and so on.

There was an "art in the park" event so it was wonderful to see local artists set up to sell their creations. One downside of the new entrance is that the walk from the entrance to the tigers is very laborious, with no restrooms, water stations, or shade. It's not bad when it's not crowded, but I can imagine how terrible it will be when summer hits. It would have been nice if the walkway was had an overhead canopy of bamboo. It's also a very industrial area, interesting in a "behind the scenes way" (but completely out of harmony with the rest of the motifs of the zoo). Please note that the zoo is now 100% cashless, and there's a huge discount if you buy your tickets online in advance (or you risk paying up to 40 per base ticket). Overall I love the zoo, I can't wait to see their continued growth, I just wish their new walkways were more considerate of pedestrians and the mercurial weather of Florida.

The animals seem well taken care of and happy. The have mostly tigers but also a lion and some smaller cats. They even have two foxes and two bears! This is different than a zoo, because they have these animals as a way to save them. Some of them were from private owners and some were form closed zoos. The workers and volunteers were all happy as well.

But that's actually the point... every dollar this nonprofit earns goes directly to animal care, facilities, and expansion. Nothing is wasted on appearances. And that mindset defines everything about this place. We signed up for a tour and arrived early to walk around a bit on our own. By chance, we ran into Curt Logiudice, the founder and owner of the sanctuary... a remarkable man who has devoted his life to this mission. Hearing him explain how it started, how it's grown, and his vision for the future was inspiring. Watching him interact with the bear they have was priceless... playful, natural, and full of trust. You couldn't tell who was enjoying it more... Curt or the bear. What they're doing here is truly admirable. Their mission is the rescue of exotic animals from serious and often tragic situations. Once an animal arrives at Catty Shack Ranch, it has a home for life. They do not breed, trade, sell, or buy animals. The sanctuary is home to tigers, a bear, lions, pumas, leopards, lynx, foxes, and coatimundis... all cared for with dignity and respect. The guided tour is absolutely worth it. The staff is knowledgeable, the experience is educational, and you get surprisingly close to the animals while still feeling completely safe. The atmosphere is calm, respectful, and not overcrowded. I noticed families with kids whose eyes were wide with amazement... it's that kind of place. This is privately funded, and even veterinarians volunteer their time to care for animals in need of medical treatment. If you see Curt on the grounds... and you probably will... stop and talk to him. His passion, humility, and genuine love for these animals is unmistakable. Please visit. Please support this place. What they're doing here truly matters. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

This place is out in the middle of nowhere. I guess it kinda needs to be as their website states the facility has four acres of land and an eight acre lake. The only thing that identified that we were at the right place was a small sign on the gate. I parked and was warmly greeted by Dawson. He advised us where to go and to check in with our vouchers. Prior to coming here I had reserved the spots as instructed on the Groupon. This is a family owned business operated by a mother (Lureen) and son (Dawson) team. Both are instructors but Dawson was the one that lead the session that day. They started by telling us about the bow types (they used Olympic quality bow), proper handling and the safety aspects. The first hour was to get familiar with the stance and bows. The session had 14 people so Dawson would take up 3 - 4 at a time and coach them on the proper techniques. He was very encouraging and patient. By the 2nd hour, most everyone was more comfortable with shooting they started a challenge to determine the winner. While people were waiting their turns, they were entertained by the free range animals there. The pigs were both really cute and friendly, there was a rescue duck, two rescue horses, 11 goats (they were roaming somewhere so no one saw them) and probably a bunch of other animals we didn't see. Dawson was even surprised when he saw the duck and asked when his mom had gotten her. Lol. Right now it's hot everywhere and I wasn't sure how they would conduct the class outside in the heat. There's a shade canopy for people to sit under and it had a nice breeze but if you sweat easily, maybe wait until it gets cooler for a more comfortable experience. I'm not sure but they might have evening sessions as well. Besides archery, gardening & fishing classes are offered as well as kayak rentals. Both Lureen and Dawson were very personable and they did an great job in educating everyone about the sport and made sure they had fun while doing it. Come and check them out!
