I see no squirrel and I see no hill...
    Fox E.

I have a better explanation for why Squirrel Hill is known as Squirrel Hill. It's because in the local high schools, the rite of passage (hazing, induction), is that every new freshman gets given a Squirrely. It's like a Swirly, but it's in a bowl of nuts instead of a toilet bowl. It's really not bad at all. I mean the kind of nuts you eat. I mean like hazelnuts. Never mind. This is one of the most beautiful areas in Pittsburgh and also one of the most expensive. It's close to Pitt and CMU and so it's packed with students and artsy types and expensive houses and tree lined hilly back streets and groves, lots of police patrolling despite low levels of crime, hipsters and trendy folk, you get the idea. Forbes & Murray is a great little intersection, and the restaurants and delights up and down both streets are plentiful, including good bubble teas at Rose Tea and amazing authentic Belgian waffles at Waffalonia, not to mention excellent Turkish kebabs at... um... the Turkish Kebab House. Lots of (expensive) shopping options, and cute people, and a very multi-cultural feel. The kind of neighbourhood that nobody associates with Pittsburgh, but you really should, since it's changed a lot.

Sq hill has fun live music street fairs in the Summer and Fall !

As of the time of this review, options for foods and drinks include a Giant Eagle grocery store, a Fine Wine & Good Spirits, and about 20 restaurants (e.g., Burgatory, Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, Crazy Mason, Eat 'n Park, Jimmy John's, Longhorn, Storming Crab, and Yokoso). I enjoy many of the restaurants. Retail stores present a good number of options for clothing (e.g., Dick's Sporting Goods, LOFT, and Rally House), footwear (e.g., DSW and Shoe Fly), home goods (e.g., Costco, Lowe's, Michael's, Mattress Firm, and Petco), and health and beauty products (e.g., Bath & Body Works, GNC, and Ulta). Current entertainment includes AMC movie theater, Barnes & Noble bookstore, Dave & Buster's, Improv comedy club, Paint Monkey, and Urban Air Adventure Park. Other current businesses are a few banks, a few hotels, some cell-phone stores, a gym, and healthcare providers (e.g., dental and vision). As you can see, this shopping center has numerous options for different types of customers to eat a meal, go shopping, and be entertained. This shopping center does not contain all of my favorite stores, but I like it more than most other shopping centers in the Pittsburgh area. I even have a friend who drives two hours one-way to shop here.

It is a cool trendy place and I had fun walking around and taking it all in. I looked it up and it sits on the old U.S. Steel's Homestead Steel Works plant and there are some smokestacks and other artistic elements still visible. I grabbed a coffee at Starbucks, shopped at Ultra Beauty, Target, and at Lunch Mexican restaurant. Would recommend the area.

There is a Planet Fitness to get your sweat on and a Giant Eagle underneath it to grab a meal after. The Beer Minimum next to the Wine and Spirits makes party shopping so easy. If you want to get glam there are several hair salons, nail shops, and a beauty supply store. And a local tuxedo shop. The entertainment (Penn Hills Cinema) and clothing shops aren't the best, but it is convenient to have them. There is plenty of parking, but sometimes Pittsburghers make up their own driving rules... right in front of the DMV. There is very little this plaza doesn't have, but a coffee shop would be a great addition.

We parked here and walked around to find dinner after our sight seeing. I like how central the location was to all the things we came to do. Station Square got its name from the 1870s, when the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad had a station here. By the 1970s, however, people no longer frequently rode railroads, so the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation developed this land into a mixed-use center. Today, many of the original buildings have been replaced. I do know that the historic Landmarks Building remains. The area also contains other historic features from Pittsburgh's past, such as the Clinton Furnace, the first blast furnace for making pig iron. As of January 2024, restaurants include Texas de Brazil, the Melting Pot, Joe's Crab Shack, Kiki Japanese, Terrene, Grand Concourse, Gandy Dancer Saloon, Tupelo Honey Southern Kitchen, Homerun Harry's, Buca di Beppo Italian, Hard Rock Cafe, Yinz Coffee, etc. Recreational activities include the Gateway Clipper, Duquesne Incline, Monongahela Incline, Segway Pittsburgh, FA Climbing, Highmark stadium and Riverhounds soccer team, Mike's Horse and Carriage Rides, Adam Solar Rides, boat charters, a park, the fountain at Bessemer Court, etc. Please note that many of these activities are seasonal. One brick office building requires identification to enter, and it contains private businesses for life insurance, transportation, counseling, taxes, software, advertising, security, pharmaceuticals, etc. Years ago, this building contained stores, but it *no* longer is a mall. For about 25 years, I have occasionally visited Station Square. The area has experienced many changes over the years. When my husband and I were teenagers, we met for the first time on the Gateway Clipper! Several years ago, we enjoyed riding the two inclines up and down the hillside and eating at some of the restaurants. Most recently, my husband and I stayed at the Sheraton hotel for a staycation, and we ate meals at several of the restaurants.
