Unfortunately, it was not a great experience. The bartender served our drinks with no napkins and no lime. Details are key in a place like this. It was also loud, and it looked like a birthday party was happening. If that was the case, maybe the place should have closed to the public to accommodate that celebration. People were loud and drunk, and the birthday boy was saying vulgar things. We will not be coming back.

My wife and I recently celebrated a special occasion here, and overall, we had an absolutely…read morewonderful experience. The food was outstanding. The Tomahawk steak was cooked perfectly, the atmosphere was elegant without feeling stuffy, and the service was attentive throughout the evening. It was the kind of dinner that creates lasting memories, and for that, we are grateful. That said, I continue to struggle with the restaurant's à la carte pricing model. I fully understand that many high-end steakhouses operate this way, but I have never quite embraced the concept. Our Tomahawk steak cost $175 and arrived without a single side dish. The fries and broccolini sides you see here were both extra charges. To be clear, this is not a complaint about the quality of the food or the overall cost of the evening. We knew we were choosing a fine dining experience and were happy to pay for it. My concern is more philosophical. When a guest orders a premium steak, I believe a complete meal should accompany it, with opportunities to upgrade or substitute sides if desired. That approach would feel more hospitable and customer-friendly while still allowing the restaurant to offer customization and premium add-ons. None of this diminished what was otherwise a terrific evening, and I would gladly return. I simply think the dining experience would feel even more complete if the restaurant reconsidered the increasingly common practice of charging separately for every component of the meal. In short: excellent food, excellent service, wonderful atmosphere, memorable evening--just a pricing philosophy that I personally find difficult to embrace.

This is an update - my wife and I went to Salt and Char this evening after the Traverse Stakes. I…read morewill preface - we live here, and have been here countless times, half the time eating at the bar. It's a bit of a go to...errrr, at least it was. So here is where today got really weird - wife ordered a filet, medium...it was delivered med/well/well. We call over the server who proceeds to advise, and I quote, "I've seen this before, but due to the color of the sky, your steak may appear overdone, but it's actually medium. Did you try it?". Um - I've eaten at steakhouses all over the world, and that is truly a first. The color of the sky.... Maybe they serve idiots? I can't even comprehend suggesting that...but here we are. This half assed explanation coupled with an awful wine suggestion (insistence), has knocked Salt and Char from the rotation. Here's the weird thing, a month ago, we met another couple at breakfast who said they'll never go back to Salt & Char again due to a bad service experience and I insisted the place was fine. To that couple - my apologies....you were right. Still shaking my head - "the color of the sky"...

Since my first experience, I've returned several times over the past year, and each visit has been consistently excellent. The cocktail menu is outstanding, with a great selection of creative drinks. Their espresso martinis have become a favorite for my friends and me during our girls' nights out. The food is just as impressive--the appetizers and entrées are rich, comforting, and full of flavor, with plenty of indulgent, cheesy options that never disappoint. One of my favorite places to dine is the Library at Backstage Pub. It offers a warm, inviting atmosphere that makes every visit feel special. A special thank you to Terry and the wonderful staff for their exceptional hospitality and consistently providing such a memorable dining experience. I always look forward to coming back.

I've had this place bookmarked for awhile and finally decided to give it a try. One of the reasons…read moreI kept putting it off was because I thought the menu didn't look much different from the typical pub fare in the area. But after eating there I found they have curated their own unique versions of the classics. We started with an order of 3's company wings which was a mixture of buffalo, garlic parm, and lemon pepper sauces. The sauce was pretty good but I like my wings crispy and these were not. For dinner I got the Backstage burger and upgraded to poutine fries. Now I'm not the biggest fan of a traditional poutine but I wanted to try it anyway because it looked good. The burger was cooked perfectly and the beef they use is very good. The poutine fries were enormous and apparently only half the size of a full order. If you like poutine you'll probably be into them but I thought the gravy was a little thick and not that flavorful and the cheese curds didn't melt as much as I would have liked. The real sleeper hit though was the Mac & Cheese. I wasn't expecting anything special and was pleasantly surprised. Definitely would come back for that. When we showed up it wasn't too busy but they were full by the time we left and I got the feeling that reservations are preferred.
