The room overlooking the mountains in the main lodge is very nice. We stayed on the second floor and there is not an elevator so you carry your bag upstairs. Dinner was in the Pub in front of the Chalet Restaurant. Dinner was excellent. Chicken Piccata would have been the best I ever had however they do not serve it with pasta. Pasta in that amazing lemon sauce would have made the dish perfect. Salmon was also very good and try the sweet potato fries. They are so good. After dinner you can sit around the fire pit (complimentary blankets are available) under the most beautiful star filled sky. It's all very romantic, The Resort has a pool, outdoor bar, ice cream parlor, ping pong, horse shoes, and other activities. It's a great family place to stay and I look forward to returning in the Fall.

My visit to the Switzerland Inn was disappointing. I had been so looking forward to this stop and…read morethe views are breathtaking. I highly recommend stopping to take in the views but do not recommend dining here. Only the Terrace Dining was open the day I was there but you'd think that would bring great views. I was seated against the building and my view was of another building without turning my chair to the views. It was very slow there and there were plenty of open tables with amazing views. I had read about the prime rib plate and although pricey at $42 decided to go with what they were known for. When my food was brought out I was told that they were out of the prime rib plate and that I was brought out the prime rib sandwich instead. What? So if they were out of what I ordered why was I not informed earlier or asked what I would like to order instead? Then to bring another item with prime rib if they are out of prime rib doesn't make much sense. Then I overheard someone at another party ordering the prime rib plate and he was not told they were out of it. So what likely happened was the waitress put my order in wrong and instead of correcting it came up with the lie to try to cover up her mistake. She was also supposed to check on me to see if I liked it but never did. When I did see her again I told her it wasn't good then she said that she was happy I liked it. That is not what I said at all. What I was brought was disgusting. I'm not sure what was worse, the soggy bread, thin pot roast that was flavorless, covered with cheese and onions. And they charged $24 for that sandwich. My side of mashed potatoes were cold. I'm not sure if they forgot to reheat them. I will never dine at the Switzerland Inn again after the awful service and food. 6/30/25 Update: The weather was beautiful the day I visited. No rain or thunderstorms in the forecast. Solo diners are just given the tables in the back without the view which is disappointing that we are not valued. I do regret not leaving when the food I was presented with was not what I ordered. I should have walked away and gone somewhere else that respected me. This restaurant needs to hire better waitstaff or properly train them so that they can put orders in correctly and if a mistake is made, he or she corrects the mistake rather than lie about it. I do hope the restaurant can correct the issues with service as there is a lack of it and improve the quality and temperature of the food served.

What a great little Inn! The room we were in was clean, though compact, and of course there's the BALCONY looking over the mountains! What a great view! The gentleman in charge there was welcoming, friendly, and patient with us. You can order breakfast and/or dinner, which is added in with your bill. Not exaggerating when I say he made us one of the best cheeseburgers I've ever had, with thick slices of perfectly ripe tomato, and perfectly cooked/seasoned crinkle fries. In the morning, we had some of the best biscuits with sausage gravy, and pancakes and bacon since my grandma's! I'm sure the fresh, cool, mountain air had something to do with our appetites, but really, he did an excellent job at making some simple comfort food. Good/fair prices on the lodgings and food, nice company and stellar views=AAA+++ in my book. We'll definitely be back!

I have a lot to say about this place, so settle in for a long review…read more Breakfast Buffet : We love the breakfast buffet. Whether it's just the two of us or we have out-of-town guests, it consistently delivers on quality and variety. The coffee is always hot (and, I'm told, locally sourced). There are indulgent options as well as lighter, healthier choices, so there's something for every mood. We especially appreciate the freshness, cleanliness, and high quality of the food and the quick service means we can be in and out and ready for the day. Overall, the breakfast buffet is excellent value. Dinner : We've dined at the Nu Wray several times and each visit has been excellent. Service is consistently attentive and the food is wonderful. Over multiple visits we've tried many entrees; the roast with sides is our favorite. Portions are generous. They're often enough for leftovers to enjoy later. The dessert and wine selections are a treat. Lodging : We've had the pleasure of seeing several rooms at the Nu Wray and the adjoining Carriage House, each tastefully decorated, meticulously cleaned, and thoughtfully stocked with everything you need for a perfect stay. The inn's attention to detail is evident throughout, and the nods to its history are fascinating to explore. Don't miss the second‑floor balcony overlooking the town square, a gorgeous spot for morning coffee or a nightcap, with cocktails served by the skilled mixologists at the lobby bar. The whole place feels like a step back in time, beautifully and thoughtfully restored. Events : We hosted our twin baby shower at the Nu Wray Inn and are deeply grateful to James, Amanda, and their staff for making it unforgettable. From a personalized menu created just for us to hand‑crafted desserts made fresh by their exceptional baker, every detail was perfect. The food was outstanding, and the service went above and beyond. They took care of us and our guests the entire afternoon, allowing us to relax and enjoy the celebration. This was a once‑in‑a‑lifetime event that we will cherish forever; the beautiful setting, thoughtful touches, and flawless execution made memories we'll carry with us for the rest of our lives. Thank you to everyone at the Nu Wray for making our day so special.

Do you prefer to walk on the hotel's treadmill rather than risk the outdoors? Are you the type that expects to grab all the little boxes of (children's size) Frosted Flakes on your way out for road snacks? If these are your expectations then this isn't your kind of hotel place to stay. Here's why: #1. Spruce Pine is not Blowing Rock, Boone, or Asheville. It's not a "destination" spot for 84.7% of the traveling public. #2. If you're going, then you're probably going for the reasons we did, to find a nice place to stay during the night while we hiked around during the daylight hours. At the end of the day, we wanted some pretty Okay places to eat and when morning came we wanted some relaxing places to slurp coffee. #3. If you stay at this hotel as we did, then you are prepared to stroll over the foot bridge that takes you into their little downtown. For those of you who are taxing-paying North Carolinians, you will enjoy knowing that the area's community college has a big hand revitalizing the former school and hockey rink and turning them into the hotel and community sports/activity center. The overall (good, win-win) effect should be to help bring in outside tourist dollars while providing community members and their families with a nice indoor complex. We found our room clean and pleasant. The price was fair and met our budget. The staff people were helpful. The patio decks and landscaping are incomplete but enough work has been done to suggest how pretty it will be when it all comes together. Finally, although we're not into trout fishing, it seems pretty obvious that enthusiasts coming from outside the area will appreciate the super easy access to the Toe and the proximity to the hotel.

Wow what a nice unique place. Very clean and a perfect getaway. Great location with a great staff.read more
