In town for a Funeral and cancelled my paid reservation

I made a reservation at: SpringHill Suites by Marriott Hampton 1997 Power Plant Pkwy, Hampton, VA 1. Although I am a GOLD-ELITE member, I made this reservation through a third party. 2. I made this reservation the day before I was flying in from Florida on January 1, 2026 to Virginia to attend a funeral on the 2 January. 3. I arrived to this hotel on January 1 somewhere near 8 PM at night. I was in town for a FUNERAL! 4. Checked in at the desk & the woman looks at my reservation and goes on to say that the hotel doesn't have hot water. I just needed a place to stay and rest because I'm attending a funeral in the morning. 5. She then says they attempted to reach out to everyone who had a reservation the last two days. I said I've not received a call, text, email or contacted in any way about canceling my reservation. 6. I said that I just need a place to stay because of the funeral in the morning. I said that I'm not even sure if there's any rooms available this late and she then says "well I just canceled your reservation right now!" 7. I asked her why did she cancel my reservation because I was going to look to see if theres any rooms available that late at night and I had the funeral in the morning. She then says, "Well, every other customer that didn't cancel their reservation asked for a refund and that's why I canceled your reservation right now!" 8. I said I'm not every other customer and that I really just needed a place to rest because of the funeral in the morning and it was late. 9. She then says, "Well, I already canceled it so you're just gonna have to contact the 3rd-party that you made it with and there's nothing I can do now that it's cancelled." 10. She told me that they were without hot water for several days. She then goes on to say that they have the tank but haven't found somebody to install it yet. crazy 11. I asked if this was the situation for a few days, then why were reservations available for people to make? They should've been closed out! She says there's nothing that she can do since she cancelled my reservation & I have to contact the place I made the reservation. 12. This is completely unacceptable and I will never stay at this hotel chain again! What they did to me even knowing about this funeral shows they have no compassion This was just horrible. 13. I was able to find another hotel later on that night. They should have at least called me to give me time to look for another hotel & not waiting for me to come in at 8 PM just to cancel my reservation standing in front of them. 14. Any company doing this to a customer does not have the customer's need in mind & doesn't even care about their customer! 15. Again, Never again will I stay at this chain. I challenge the managers or owners to go back and look at the video at the front desk and see how I was treated. Do you think they cared when I told them that I was in town for a funeral?

    Mold around the socket

The staff was really polite and accommodating but the room was atrocious. The first room they put us in had mold that I smelled as soon as I walked in and all types of stains. I asked for another room the second room was better but still had stains on just about everything. I went and bought my own sheets and pillowcases because the bed had a mattress cover but the mattress itself was stained as well. The ownership truly needs to renovate and put some care into this property!

My first impression is that the staff here was very welcoming and friendly the pool wasn't working un fortunately. However, the location was great. I would try this location again. I Believe they offer breakfast. However, I checked out way before that.

6/24/21: I needed someone to stay close to a training I was attending. This hotel was close to the interstate, shooing, and restaurants. The front desk staff was not friendly upon check in. The hotel needs updating and repairs. It looked beat up in certain places. The room was ok, but it needed to be cleaned better. Stains in the carpet, a dirty bathroom, and hair everywhere is disgusting to me. It served its purpose & allowed me to rest before attending my training. That's about it.

I had a nice stay here at the SpringHill Suites (Hampton, Virginia). The staff here was friendly and professional throughout my visit, from check-in to check-out. Every place I visited within this hotel was clean and well-decorated, including the hotel lobby, hallways, and especially my room. I found the layout of my room to be a little awkward, although it had all the items that I needed. The bed was nice and big, and it was comfortable. The couch layout was unusual, and it made me feel like I was in the waiting room to see my doctor. The layout of my room also made it awkward to watch TV, because you either had to watch while laying in bed or watch from across the room while sitting on that uncomfortable couch. My room also had a very small desk, small refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, iron and ironing board. Additionally, the HVAC system worked well, and the bathroom was really clean. The hotel hallways were clean and well-illuminated. There was an ice machine on my hotel-room floor, and an ATM machine on the first floor. The housekeeping staff also did a wonderful job during my stay. They offer a complimentary breakfast for their guests, which was quite nice. The lobby area is also an inviting place, and great for unwinding and/or socializing. Overall, I enjoyed my stay here. I would rate my experience with a solid 3-stars, almost a 4.

Okay, so my family and I were on vacation again and visiting by the area. We heard that SpringHill just recently renovated its facility so we decided to book few nights here. My husband booked more than two months in advance of one room, double queen size bed. We are guest of 4. He received the online confirmation of the booking within a minute later. The day before our arrival, we printed our vacation plans and have all paperwork ready and handy. We noticed that the hotel changed our reservation from a double queen size room to a one king size bedroom. We never got a call, or confirmation of this change. We called the hotel and spoke to Janet who says, "well, our hotel is now booked so nothing can be done." She didn't provide a reason why and what reasons did anyone switch out reservation and also did not have the courtesy to inform us. We only learned of the change because we went online to check upon our reservation despite the fact that we had received the email confirmation of our double queen size room. She was apologetic but seriously what kind of hotel service does this to their guests?! Janet says she'll "look into any availability of double queen size room later in the evening and will get back to you". The evening came and no call or email communication coming from SpringHill. The next morning when our vacation officially began and as we were leaving NJ driving to VA,y husband checked the reservation online again and SpringHill made the update and we got our original reservation but still once again, no one including Janet from this location had called to confirm. Horrible, horrible customer service! With regards to the hotel renovations, yes, the decor looks updated but yet dirty. The walls have lots of art and doodle drawings from crayons and pens at three feet height and below. The mini fridge auto shuts itself in few hours which is the most annoying thing. If you need to leave your goods cold, you leave it in the fridge so auto chill that lasts for few hours while you're out all day is not cool! For sure, I do not recommend staying here. Services are not great. Rooms are still dirty despite some decor renovations were recently completed, fridge does not work well.

Spacious and clean upon initial inspection. But the devil is in the details, isn't it?

The best thing about this hotel is the staff. They are kind and welcoming at the front desk. However... The hotel elevators are wrecked. I mean, filthy, hand prints galore, the floor stayed muddy/wet both days I was there. The walls are PAPER thin. I could hear the guy above(?) me cursing in the shower one morning bc the water was too hot... even though that was amusing, that's extremely startling first thing in the morning. The hotel room didn't get cleaned while I was there, even though I was there for two nights, until I asked to have the room cleaned. I wouldn't stay here again, and honestly I'm amazed to see a branch of the Marriott in such bad shape.

I don't travel much, so I don't have anything to compare with as far as the Marriott brand, which I had always heard was nice, but I was disappointed with this location, Springville Suites in Hampton VA . On check in for my two night stay, I was told the system was down and they needed to get a photocopy of my photo ID and payment card in order to do the check in once the system came up. This was quite disconcerting! I understand it's the weekend, but one would think that a major, worldwide corporation would have someone available either onsite or on-call to fix issues such as internet access! I was told by the front desk that they were waiting for Verizon to fix the issue. We also weren't given any instructions for how anything worked or which way to go at the front desk, including check out time or which elevators to use. Along the hall, we noticed that the carpets looked old and dirty, and one room labeled electrical had the door left cracked open. Finally in the room, the first thing I noticed was the sofa very worn and one whole side was ripped! There was only 1 tiny bottle each of shampoo for two people. I have long hair so I used up all the shampoo on my shower and my husband had to use the soap to wash his hair. The other amenities were very chintzy also. A towel bar was broken, and the piece that broke off was on a shelf under the sink. Due to the internet access not available, our favorite television options were not available either. I did manage to hook my laptop up to the tv with the HDMI cable, but used up all my hotspot high speed plan to watch a few shows. The listing did mention "daily housekeeping", so I was also surprised upon return in the evening of the first day to find that housekeeping had apparently not been in the room, as there were no new amenities nor fresh towels, nor had the bed been made up. On the plus side, the towels were very plush and thick, and the shower pressure nice and strong! The AC worked fine too. We are about to check out now. The system still hasn't come up, meaning there is no internet access yet, and I have no idea how much I will be charged. I set up the reservation through Orbitz, but I cannot leave a review there, since I am not officially "checked in" nor "checked out" yet. Next time, regardless of brand, I will read the reviews on the property, as I have found that reviews for this one are mostly low ratings. Unfortunately, many of them noted specifically that this property is very subpar for the Marriott brand. One of the reviews mentioning some of the same issues I experienced was from 6 weeks ago, but another was from over a year ago, so I don't expect any changes soon.

Booked this hotel based on location & costs... then became concerned upon reading the Yelp reviews after the fact. However, I stuck with my 1 night reservation & I can now attest that the rating isn't quite accurate. More like a 3.5 stars & rounding my rating up to help accurately reflect the hotels current status. Pros: -Friendly, helpful staff that enhances your experience. -Large divided rooms with kitchenette area. -Pool/Jacuzzi amenity entertained the kids. -Great location for area shopping & dining. -Carpeted stairwells. (I am a stairs kinda girl.) The Indifferent: -Complimentary breakfast is on par with typical other hotels, but some items weren't quite eatable. The waffles split (seemed to the batter), the oatmeal was overly watery & French toast sticks lacked taste. Recommend sticking with the eggs, fresh spinach & salsa + greek yogurt. -Room was clean. I even looked under the couch (based on another review), but the sink faucet was missing a screw which made it quite confusing until we placed the handle on correctly. -Gym features several cardio machines, but only 1 bench with set of dumbbells. Thankfully I was the only one there to utilize, so this wasn't an issue for me. I love the HUGE mirrors in the gym! What makes this hotel stand out is the staff. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

But also there was one time when there was citrus water, cucumber water and lemonade out for guests, all at once. I thought that was very thoughtful. I overheard the staff interacting very positively with each other, thanking one another for their help/support. That was great to see. Our room was clean and spacious. AC definitely worked (which I loved, hubs not so much.) Nice big windows and the curtains blocked out most of the light, just not along the top of the windows. No flashing smoke detector, which is a peeve of mine. Speaking of peeves, the bathroom is beautiful. However, I hate that these hotels have taken on these barn doors. I would like to simply close and secure my door. This was worse bc it was a double door, loud and clunky. This led to unnecessary noise at night. Often times, I'd slide the 2 doors together, turn around and one would slide right back open. And no matter what I did, the doors wouldn't close all the way. I included a photo. Moving on, the shower was huge with a double shower head AND a closing shower door. However, the water pressure was very poor. Same goes for the toilet. Despite this hiccup, the hotel insists that everyone take the elevator rather than using the stairs (reserved for fire emergency only); the pool seems to be out-of-service this season as well. * some design flaws -- the bathroom's double barn doors seem like a particularly poor choice -- functionally, they're bad at keeping privacy because there is often a gap right in the middle unless you close the doors super carefully; aesthetically, they will seem outdated before long. We left and returned at 4p for check in and were met with a long line of customers attempting the check in, but rooms still weren't ready and the front desk staff couldn't be bothered to try and accommodate. A customer and a member of staff began quarreling over the lack of respect the staff was showing and the manager had to get involved. Room accommodations are subpar- For the $100 rate, you get a studio and no where for an infant or toddler to sleep. On a positive note, the staff was friendly for the most part. The laundry room was spacious which is much needed. Overall, a poor experience at this hotel and would not recommend to any families looking at this location as an extended stay.

The facade of manicured groundskeeping does give the impression of a decent place to stay. However, once inside, there's a truth of why I was compelled to not stay there. I booked the stay through Expedia. My reservation was scheduled for 7/23 - 7/26. None of the pictures in the app show the reality of what the rest of the hotel looks like. I arrived at the hotel 7/23 to check in. Upon the entrance of the lobby, there was a reception desk to the far left where they are stationed. Behind the desk, there is a wall on the left that has a noticeable water stain around it at the time I was checking in. The check-in process seemed okay. The manager Tracy checked me in, handed me the keys, and advised me how to access the side door number 2 to bring in my luggage. I get a porter to gather my luggage and walk through the hotel's first floor to the side door. The corridor to the side door is to the left of the lobby desk where I checked in. Once in that short corridor, you take a left to go through the hallway to get to the side door 2. Along the way, water stains on the ceiling are prevalent with irregular patches of smooth plastering and popcorn ceiling right to the door. Both finishes were stained. There was a sprinkler that had a square hole about four inches on each side cut out in the ceiling. My skin was crawling. With the help of my cousin, I get my luggage loaded on the porter, I go back inside to go up to my room on the third floor by the elevator. Upon exiting the elevator, there's a faint musty smell in the hallway. For the segment of the hallway where my room was located there are prevalent water stains on the third floor ceiling that ran from the elevator and extended beyond my room. As soon as I opened the door my room, the musty smell in the hallway was concentrated in my assigned room. It was rank of dampness and humidity. The smell stopped me at the door. I looked back at my cousin who said, "Ain't no way." I struggled to step further into the room but did go in. The back of my throat was gagging because the smell was so repulsive. There was a sofa in the room that looked like it was picked up off the side of the road, post rain storm as it has noticeable water stains on it as well as can be seen in the pictures. I sit down on a chair that is not upholstered to call Expedia. I told them that it was not possible to sleep in that room and that I had strong concerns for my health with the condition of the hotel. I was told that the matter would be escalated and to expect to hear something by the following Monday. I had not unloaded a single thing, make my way out of the room but not before taking more pictures of the hallways. I went back to the front desk where the manager, Tracy, that checked me in was no longer there. A Lala was there and took the keys back that was witnessed by my cousin. I requested that the manager be contacted to reach out to me. Never happened. I find accommodations elsewhere. Having been told the manager would be back Saturday, 7/25, I reach back out to the hotel. She was not there. Spoke at length with another front desk clerk that went on with excuses for the condition of the hotel. I requested the manager be contacted to reach out to me. Never happened. Monday, I reach back out to Expedia about the status of the escalation to get a refund to which I was told there was none. This agent does follow through with filing an escalation on which I did receive an email on 7/29 confirming an escalation was being reviewed for resolution. I do take it upon myself to contact the hotel and finally reach Tracy, 7/31. She told me that she'd never gotten any communications from Expedia whatsoever. I circle back to Expedia 7/30 about the escalation. I tell them of Tracy saying that she never received any communication from Expedia. Expedia calls the hotel, speaks with Tracy, and Tracy declines to give a refund for a stay that never happened. I reached out to Tracy to get the correct spelling of her name to include in these glowing reviews of the quality of service, integrity, and condition of the hotel of which she was made aware. Her tone was an arrogant apathy as she has my money. She not once apologized nor offered ANY compensation of an adjustment much less a refund. Please, use discernment when selecting a hotel through Expedia and the Country Inn and Suites located at 1917 Coliseum Drive, Hampton, VA 23666.
