The shuttle picks up here of course and I came around 6:20am; I was in the line by 6:45 and it was already wrapping around several times at the platform but the buses are big and particularly in the morning a bunch of shuttles come minutes apart so I actually didn't wait more than 15 mins or so to board one (I was on shuttle #3 of the morning). The organization is impressive, it's good they do it this way because the canyon would absolutely be loaded with cars otherwise!

I had an opportunity to get a permit to go up to Angels Landing. The hike is a rigorous hike because it's straight up uphill, but it's a beautiful walk. Highly recommend. The shuttles travel frequently and we were lucky enough to not hit the crowds. I've recommend getting the national Park pass so that you can use it on all national parks. It's only $10 more to get the universal pass than it is for entrance into just one part one time.

Stay in Springdale for the closest location. The Best Western was very nice and Shuttle stop 4 - Favorite easy trails in my order of preference: -- Riverside Walk (2.2 miles, 57 ft elevation change, 1.5 hours) - paved path along the Virgin River in a Canyon -- Pa'rus Trail (1.7 or 3.5 miles, 50 ft elevation change, 1-2 hours) - start at park shuttle stop #3 (Canyon Junction-shuttle only stops going downhill - Not from the Visitor Center) for a 1.7 mile walk on a paved trail near the Human History museum, past the campgrounds and to the visitor center. If you start at the Visitor Center, then you will have to turnaround at Canyon Junction and it is 3.5 miles. - The Grotto Trail (1 miles, 35 ft, 0.5 hour) - dirt trail paralleling the road from Stop 6 (Grotto) to Stop 5 (Zion lodge) - saw and heard a wild turkey. - Weeping Rock Trail (0.4 miles, 98 ft, 0.5 hour) - short but steep paved trail ends at a rock alcove with dripping water - Lower Emerald Pool (2 miles, 150 ft, 1.5 hours) - paved trail to a small pool. It had been dry, so it was underwhelming but if it had rained more, it might have been better. If you are adventurous and like a good view and danger, then try to get a permit to hike Angel's Landing. Someone died the week before we arrived. In the park, there are 9 shuttle stops where you can get off to hike. The following stops have toilets (may be a pit toilet or flush toilet): stop 1 Visitor center - flush, 2 Zion Human History Museum - flush - but you have to walk a bit to get to the museum where the toilet are located outside, 5 Zion Lodge - flush -inside the lodge, 6 Grotto-pit?, 7 Weeping Rock-pit?, 9 Temple of Sinawava - pit.

So we drove out to the East side of the park via the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway and tunnel and took in the scenery, looked for bighorn sheep, and pulled over occasionally to get more photos and stretch. At this time they were still doing a one-way traffic control through the 1930's tunnel (to manage large vehicles passing through without incident). That ends June 7, 2026 and specific large vehicle sizes will have to take an alternative route - no tunnel for you! See their website for details and updates. We only waited about 7 minutes to pass to the East and only about 2 minutes to return on the West side. Just good timing on our departure - nothing you can control to shorten the wait. While on the East side of the tunnel we were fortunate to find a parking space in the limited areas so we could get out and walk the Canyon Overlook trail. It was easy walking but considered a moderate hike due to the drop-offs along the trail (handrails and plenty of space on the trail to feel safe going single file through a couple areas.) Most sections you can pass hikers coming back and have plenty of trail space. There were a couple of rock overhang, cave-like sections that provided a cool break from the sun. The trail end viewpoint overlooks the highway below and in the left bluff you can find one of the windows of the tunnel. Then we headed to the Visitor Center (around 2pm) and had no issues finding multiple parking spots were open. We sat at a picnic table on the Watchman side of the lots and enjoyed the sandwiches we brought for lunch. We did then go into the Visitor Center and it was crowded. A quick look around and I didn't find much new that I was interested in since we were there a couple years ago - until I saw an art book on Wildflowers of the West by Molly Hashimoto. Since I had bought her Trees of the West at Cedar Breaks Nat'l Monument a couple years ago I really wanted this new book. The checkout line was well organized and in 2 minutes I had paid for the book and was heading out to the informational side of the building where the crowd was not! We could have waited until after our final hike to go in, but I didn't want to be time constrained while on the trail just to and make it back before VC closed at 5pm. We boarded the shuttle before 3pm and made our way to Stop 9 - Temple of Sinawava where we undertook the Riverside Walk. Shuttle seemed to take about 20+ minutes to get up its route to reach this final stop. (Restrooms at the Temple stop were temporarily closed for renovation. Can't recall seeing notice of this prior to arriving at that stop). We'd been on the Riverside Walk during a previous visit and wanted to show our visiting relatives this easy, pleasant trail that takes you up to where those more adventuresome (and prepared with proper wading equipment) head into The Narrows. The main paved trail was busy but not too packed. We were still able to be alone on the path and experience the quiet forest and spot mule deer, lots of squirrels and see and hear little yellow goldfinches singing. On a previous trip we were more ambitious and exited the paved path to walk along the Virgin River on the dirt trail. I think we had to scramble up/down/over/around some boulders occasionally to stay along that river trail but there were a few cutovers to get back up on the easier paved main path if needed. We jumped back on the shuttle service in the 5:30 - 6pm timeframe and had time to stop at Zion Lodge (Stop 5). There were several turkeys strolling casually around the grounds looking amused (or annoyed, who can really read a turkey's face?) at the humans on their land. We used the restrooms, checked out the gift shop and then headed back over to catch the shuttle back to the VC. The park was already running extra shuttles at this hour of the day so no one would be stranded at any of the 9 stops along the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. I think the next time I come to Zion it will be during the off-season when cars are allowed on the Scenic Drive - that will be a new experience.

Little that I know we really need it the whole outfit to get in the water so rent it ! Is worth it if you visit from Oct -Feb I promise you need it ! We were doubting about the bikes instead of the bus ride so all well we rented the bikes best decision ever ! The views c the air you breathe the time you spend in the road are priceless! We were…read morelucky to both get next day lottery permits for Friday afternoon, but it turns out there were no rangers stationed there in the afternoon. I have heard rangers are usually only there in the morning, so one could probably hike without permits if you wait for later in the day. Including breaks and 20 minutes at the top, we took three hours in total. Even in March, it was hot, and I probably should've brought more than 1.5 L of water. I logged a 4.8-4.9 mile hike from the Grotto trailhead up to Angels Landing and back down again. The hike up to Scout Lookout was challenging because of the elevation, while Angels Landing was more challenging due to the technical aspect. They have chains to hold on to in most of the sections. People brought their young children to hike, which I think is irresponsible and dangerous when one small slip could mean a tumble down the canyon.

There's minimal elevation gain making this a wonderfully walkable trail for families and others who cannot do the more strenuous hikes.

The damp/weeping wall at the end of the hill is pretty because of the vegetation growing there, and the water that drips from above the cliff face feels very nice and cool (like it's raining!). On a hot day, it's a nice spot after going up the steep hill. Reminds me a lot of Alum cave bluffs in smoky mountains national park if you've been. Overall - this hill takes like 10-15 mins to ascend if you walk fast, so it's an easy pit stop. Might as well drop by if you have the time :)

Otherwise you can park on the street. It is metered, for $1/hr, max 2 hours. Anything over 2 hours is $20 flat fee. There is a very nice older gentleman/parking attendant who is friendly and helpful. The trail is nicely paved and well maintained along the virgin river. It is a very easy walk, tranquil and beautiful. Everyone is very cordial, and respectful of the space. Though there are access to the river banks, there are warning signs posted about toxic algae bloom in the water for pets, so I decided not to go near the water just to be safe. There are a few poopy bag stations along the trail, in case you run out of bags. Overall the trail is very clean and very enjoyable.

I wanted to park at the visitor center (one of the only areas with unpaid parking; if you come later and by later the internet says 7-8 am -- good chance you have to park in neighboring Springdale and pay). I arrived around 6:20 am after a 35 min drive from Hurricane; it was still near totally dark when I arrived. There were still good number of parking spots but the lot was prob already over 1/2 full by then. I used the bathrooms (pretty decent for visitor center bathrooms; the soap is oddly watered down tho but works lol). The visitor center itself wasn't opened yet and the shuttles don't start until 7a but people were already lining up. I hopped in line around 6:40 or so, and when the park rangers let us approach the boarding platform, the line was wrapping around several times already. The good news tho - I only had to wait for the 3rd bus to come, since the buses carry so many folks. I don't think I even waited 15 mins to get on the shuttle, since several come right at the start of the shuttle service. I did ride in to the grotto first since I had the earliest angel's landing time permit. The trail was not busy by any means but did have quite a few folks already on it. When I got all the way out to Angel's landing I saw a guy propose to his (now finance) a little after sunrise. It was STUNNING (both the view, and the cuteness of the proposal!). I also went to the temple of Sinawava and did some shorter hikes. Shuttles come frequently enough you're really never waiting longer than 10-15 mins at a time. It's a very smooth system they have and definitely better than having hundreds of cars trying to all park at once! Good thing they have it :) Overall Zion isn't my fave NP of all that I've visited, but it's VERY up there. I would absolutely go back any time - hoping to do the narrows eventually (I did the river walk, but didn't want to get wet). Should be on everyone's bucket list to visit at least once imo!!

Would rec the walk even if you aren't going to do the narrows itself, just for the vibes :)
