We went for a birthday dinner. We were seated outside on a covered patio. It was a cool evening with a pretty strong breeze coming off the ocean. The view was amazing. The drinks were interesting- I had a pistachio martini. My husband had their iteration of an old fashioned. Both were fine. Dinner was good. Service was a little slow/spotty. Prices were high, but it is an island, so... We also returned to enjoy "happy hour" on the front lawn. There are Adirondack chairs lined up at the top of the slope of the front lawn, as well as groupings around tables on the lawn. Our server was very attentive and we shared seats with people looking to enjoy the afternoon. I think the lawn happy hour was a better experience than the dinner, for the sheer relaxing experience and better service. read more

I loved the spring house! The front lawn was my favorite part; we would often meet our friends on the lawn multiple times throughout the day, whether that be for breakfast or happy hour. Our room was very nice as well and we enjoyed our view. My only downside was that the lawn gets quite busy and it is often a battle for a chair. As someone staying in the hotel, it is frustrating when people not paying an arm and a leg to stay here are sitting in the chairs that I paid for. read more

The Spring House is one of the most elegant, historic hotels on the island. It is not cheap, but the rooms are beautifully renovated and air conditioned!!! And the staff, location and views are perfection. We sit on the porch and listen to music, walk thru the backyard to rent bikes, and stroll to the animal farm and into town several times a day. One person in our party became violently ill after eating the food Given the poor quality of the preparation it was outrageously overpriced. We were in town for a weekend wedding and had an excellent experience at the Spring House. The property is comprised of several individual rustic inns located on top of a hill with great views of the ocean and surrounding areas. Our room was very small, but very clean and comfortable. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. I will not hesitate staying at the Spring House again. read more

My friend and I walked up to Spring House Hotel for drinks. The outside area includes many white lawn chairs. On the back of the chairs are flags you can raise. Ballard's uses the same system that you raise a flag and you receive service. My friend and I sat at empty chairs and tables and waited with the flag up. We waited twenty minutes and after no one came, we went to the bar. I ordered a mudslide and my friend ordered a pina colada. They were both thin and okay. We sat at a different chair that overlooked the water. When we finished our drinks, a server came over and asked if we wanted more. We said no, we didn't want another one. Not sure I will try the food but I might try a regular cocktail next visit, most likely at the bar. read more

We sat in the lounge area in an attempt to be considerate since we were not looking for full meals, only drinks and a snack. The bartender sold us 2 dozen oysters and drinks. There were no open seats at the bar. When we walked toward our seats in the lounge area, we were told we could not bring the oysters to the lounge area, only drinks. I asked the hostess if we could sit at an empty restaurant table for ten minutes to enjoy the oysters. They said no. The table sat empty while we stood, gulped down 2 dozen oysters, dodging wait staff, and squeezing one by one at the bar. When we returned to the lounge area, the patrons adjacent us were served food at their lounge chairs! We complained to the manager and nothing was done. Extremely rude and disappointing. read more

Amazing location! Victorian elegance with the best view, high up on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic. Its location is unrivaled by any other hotel or B&B on Block Island-- an easy walk up from the ferry and accessible to the beaches, downtown and the bike paths. Lots of dining options here too: formal dining room, outside patio, porch, indoor bar and porch side bar meets any mood you're in. Enjoy some Rosé or Chablis on the Adirondack chairs, then dinner on the porch followed by drinks at the bar. Everyone is there for the same reason; to relax, unwind and take in the moment. No one doubts that this place has amazing views. And most of the time they make a great drink. But our last visit was just so so. After discovering a metal shard in our daughter's pasta dish, the waitress was responsive and saddened by it, and came back about 10 minutes later with some good news. She was going to comp the four dollar pasta dish. It clearly wasn't her fault, but the lack of responsiveness from the staff was a little eye-opening. My family and I spend a lot of money here every year, and a place can only get by on its looks for so long. Maybe it's just time to get drinks there and move onto some else where the food is better and the service is a little more responsive. read more

The Barn has the Dining Room vibe character and food. One has the feeling they may share a kitchen. Back to the bar ... drinks are what you'd expect on the Block. Except 5 star kudos to the wine buyer. Apps start to inch up with Squash Bisque at 11.00 and Beet Salad at 18.00. After the drinks and menus evaporate, entrees begin to roll in ... well timed at that. Shrimp n Grits aka polenta- somewhat dry, Mushroom Ravioli at 36.00, Halibut Special 44.00 and a NY Strip Steak (NOT rib eye) at over 55.00. Yeah, yeah, yeah ... it averaged out to about $90.00+ per person. In a bar, a grand bar, but a bar with a view of the room. Brought the family to the spring house hotel for dinner and drinks out on the lawn sitting among the beautiful Adirondack chairs. Wonderful views, but not much to say positively beyond that. We ordered drinks and a number of shared plates (limited menu outside) for our family of six (including two under two years). We had dinner reservations inside, but thought we could keep the chaos of our young children outside on the lawn so that it wouldn't be shared by others. Promptly after ordering, we were served our drinks. Another forty five minutes passed without food, so we politely inquired to make sure we were not mistaken as to being served outside. The staff confirmed our order. Another half hour went by, but no food. At this point, we were approaching our two year olds bedtime. We again flagged down waitstaff and we're informed it should not be much longer. We waited until more than an hour and a half after placing our order (for small shared plates: buffalo cauliflower bites, sliders, etc) until we informed our waitress that we would need to cancel our food order. She went inside to check again and assured us the food "was ready and would be right out". If this were true then I would expect the food would be there after several Inquiries. Regardless, we said no thank you as we were past our allotted time. Things happen and it was a busy summer night. The more infuriating part was when the manager came out to speak to us. He said that he did not understand why we were cancelling our order that was ready. I was stunned at how brazen he was that he felt we were the ones being unreasonable. A simple apology or acknowledgment that they were busy and the kitchen was behind (or our order was misplaced) would have gone a long ways. Oh well. read more

Seriously great pizza. I have eaten at all the top pizza joints in NY and Ct, and the Colony Grill is my standard bearer. The Pinza Romano is the best I've ever had. We had the Sicilian and it was the definition of pizza pie. Thick doughy lots of sausage onions and just pizza goodness. Not sure of when it closes for the season, but we'll worth a visit. read more

Oysters on the half shell were excellent! Tuna Poke was very good as was the lobster roll. Service was excellent and as anyone will note, the views are the most amazing on the Island! Great spot for lunch on the patio. We were also here for cocktails on the lawn. Arrive early for that as it fills up very quickly. I don't easily give out 5 stars but Spring House is one of our favorite places on the planet! If on BIRI, don't miss it! read more

The BI dumpem out crew needed a good sit down restaurant. After days of gai and dumpeming out, we arrived at the olde springy just in time for dinner. We were promptly sat down in a cozy spot near the front entrance. After ordering our many appetizers and drinks, we decided on our main courses. I got the swordfish and let me tell you...Best swordfish I've ever had!! There were no leftovers to be had (because I forgot them in the taxi). We wanted to check out the Atlantic Inn for their tapas but they weren't open for lunch. They recommended us to Spring House. The drinks and food were both pretty good! The federal hill pizza was good, and came out quick. However, something I was confused about/not a fan of was when our waiter brought us our same drinks without us ordering them. At that point, we felt bad about turning them down even though we didn't want anymore drinks!! It was just frustrating since they're pretty pricey drinks already, and he charged us those drinks. Will definitely know for next time to turn down drinks that we don't order. read more

Do not plan to dine at this establishment during your trip! We went during the posted business hours, there was no sign posted stating the property was closed, and my family was told they were closed due to a private event. This is the second time this has happened to us at this location, and the manager, Alex, was unapologetic and was unable to give us other suggestions in the area for dining after we spent 30 minutes walking to the property (and had another thirty minute walk ahead of us without eating food). If these are their business practices, they should just act as an event venue and not be a restaurant. read more

We eat here every summer. Today we went for lunch and the hostess sat us in an empty hot tent in the back. I saw that ALL the tables on the cool breezy porch were free so I asked if they were available. She said they might be reserved so she had to ask. We were then moved to a table by the bar - not on the porch- and I said nothing. The entire porch remained free the whole time we had lunch. Why wouldn't the seat us on the porch? The restaurant had 15 employees standing around chatting to eachother and plenty of empty tables. The only reason to spend $125.00 on lunch is for the breezy porch with ocean views. If I wanted to eat in a hot tent or next to a noisy bar I could do that anywhere for 1/2 the price. read more

Was at the Spring House on July 12th, my friend and I walked up to Spring House Hotel for a drink and sat outside on lawn chairs. The waiter was terrible took forever getting our drinks. I asked for check three times because we needed to get on the 7:45 ferry, he never brought check I had to find him and when he gave us check it was for the people sitting next to us! The manager had to void transaction then charged us for our drinks causing us to run to the ferry. Started with a glass of Opal Pearl SB and Narragansett which were average. Onto dinner... the clam chowder was AMAZING - best we've had. The swordfish and linguine and clams were tasty and the herb butter that came with our bread was unique and very flavorful. BUT our meal took extremely long to arrive. We booked a mid-June special where prices were 50% off during the first part of the week as we wanted a little getaway somewhere local and safe. From a pandemic perspective, these guys as well as all of BI were fantastic in their precautions. I hear that the visitor's of the island now in mid-summer are not being very respectful of these rules so please know that the island as a whole and the businesses (these guys included) are trying to play it safe in every way. Booking was easy but we had to secure a car ferry reservation first (highly recommended if staying overnight with small children) so I called to discuss room options and were able to book over the phone. Because it was two weeks out, a cancellation would forfeit my deposit but you do get a timeframe in which you can. We arrived on the slow ferry with our car and it wasn't check in time yet and unfortunately they couldn't accommodate us yet but were quick to call and let us know when our room was in fact ready. No elevators - but there are staff that can help bring bags to the rooms. Our room was 305 in the main house and I haven't stayed in others but I can assure you I think we may have had one of the best if not THE best room. We had a view of the ocean through one window and the beautiful homes and farms through the other. We were above the restaurant so with windows open you could hear a bit of that. We didn't stay through Thursday which is likely a good thing as it's Martini night and let me just say you may as well partake in it because you wouldn't be sleeping through that noise - it is a fun time though! We didn't opt to use maid services during our two night stay but the room was immaculate upon arrival. They even gave us hand sanitizer for our stay. There's no ice machine but they fill it for you downstairs and the bar even provides glasses if you choose to mix your own room beverages. The lawn had beautiful Adirondack chairs to watch the ocean the dinner at the restaurant was very good indeed - just know it's one of the pricier spots. There wasn't much of a breakfast choice they do have a guy selling coffees and small bites but a short walk down the hill you are at Ernies, one of the best breakfast spots. And before even reaching Ernie's, you have the Manissess exotic animal farm right within close distance and fantastic for kids! The king bed was comfortable and the pullout was a Queen size bed which was okay. Definitely book here if you want to stay on beautiful grounds with gorgeous scenery and a quick walk to pretty much anywhere in Old Harbour. read more

We come here every year for my husbands birthday and look forward to our reservation. The aesthetic is incredibly- the food is always good- drinks are great. However - this year the service was terrible and ruined our experience. I did speak w the hostess station on the way out. 1. Our dinner arrived 45 min after ordering - folks who were seated before us were served . 2. I requested ice cream to come with our meal for our daughter- never arrived . 3. Such a wonderful place with a breathtaking view for dinner! I went on a date with my boyfriend and the ambiance felt very romantic. The service from our waiter, Luke, was incredible. My water was always filled and I was continuously checked on. The appetizers came out very quickly, and the entrees came out shortly afterwards. There was still plenty of time to converse, take pictures, and enjoy the scenery. Now, for the food: We absolutely loved the bacon wrapped scallops and the beet salad. The Scallops are a must have! They came in this sweet sauce that is addicting. The beet salad was nice and refreshing. The ahi tuna entree was pretty good. May not have been the best one I've ever had but it definitely was presented well and it did taste delicious. The linguine and clams were not my favorite. It had a lot of clams which was nice but they could have been cleaned through a bit more. When I bit down on one of them I think I may have caught a piece of a shell and there was a little sand in another. In addition, the sauce was very bland and tasteless. If that's your go-to dinner, just add some crushed red pepper for a kick or cheese for a bit more flavor. The oysters were very tasty. I will say, as a Rhode Islander there are lots of places where you can get same quality oysters for cheaper prices. But the quality of service and the views justified the pricing for a pretty good dining experience overall! read more

This hotel is first off way over priced. I get that its block island , but $850 for a Sunday night and a small room is a joke. We stayed 1 night with our small service animal , after checkout they charged an additional $1200 for a "Pet cleaning fee" We have a small 25 lb frenchie. He did pee and we cleaned with a towel. So a cleaning fee is fine , but $1200. The manager lied to me when I called and questioned. read more

Quality cut just fell short but the manager did take 20% off the tab, very nice of him. Scallops were perfect, tuna was incredible, oysters and clams were perfect and the billet manhattans by Christian at the indoor bar were off the charts great. Venue is spectacular, service was good and staff very nice. Overall a good experience and we have been going almost every year for 20-years. A must stop on the Block. read more
