I'm excited a new, cheaper climbing opened near me.  Sportrock Climbing Center just opened at the Rio, where the Sport & Health used to be. I used to go to the Sport & Health. It is cool to see how they transformed the space. I wish they kept the swimming pool, but they turned it into a bouldering area. I'm not too fond of the layout of the gym. It feels like a maze. They have plenty of toprope and lead climbs and boulder problems. The brand new holds are really rough.  Got some scrapes here and there, but I'm still having fun on their routes. I loved climbing next to the giant window where you can see the lake down below. I wish they had more overhung climbs. If you are new to Sportrock and want to climb the walls, you will need to pass a belay test that's pretty easy to do. They also have some auto-belay routes, if you don't have a partner. You will need to a lesson and then get tested when you return the next time. The lowering part was interesting. The first few seconds feels like a drop, but then slows down when you're lowered.  They also have yoga room, workout room, and a small cardio room. I usually ride the stationary bike, but the ones here are a little too high for my 5 foot self. I'm excited to see what workout classes they have.  One of my favorite things at the gym are the individual saunas in the bathrooms. You can play music in them.  They also have two mini arcade game machines, Foosball, and table tennis.  Plenty of parking in the garage. $90/month for individuals. You get 12 guest passes a year. *Edit to add: I hope they add foot showers in the bathrooms. Also for the individual saunas, it'd be great if they frosted the glass doors. It's not very relaxing to have people look at you whenever they walk by.

5/5! With Rio being the newest addition to the Sportrock Climbing locations, expectations were very high. The Facility: The facility is huge! Plenty of top rope/lead and bouldering to go around. There are three main areas, the front top rope/lead area downstairs, the upstairs pool area (boulders) with a section to top rope as well, and the backcourts (bouldering/top rope). With it being such a huge facility, there's plenty of space to go around and it doesn't feel cramped even during peak hours. There's also a very nice gym on the bottom floor with very nice equipment. All updated with Rogue machines and accessories. The Routes/Grades: Routes are set pretty fairly here. I found that every grade I was reading looked pretty fair for each level of climber. It helps with the new grading system, so all levels aren't discouraged for trying new routes/grades. The holds are also very clean and fresh. So no slippery, dirty hold here! The Staff: The staff here are very nice and welcoming too! They are very informative and helpful if you have any questions. Overall, a 5/5. Sportrock is already one of my favorite climbing gyms in the DMV area, and with the addition of Rio, Sportrock members have another great option to travel too.

Super super cool !! To find out we have one of the best climbing gyms right here in Maryland is wild. This place is used for Olympic tryouts. Kids love it. Ping pong in the back for breaks. Great team building experiences for the family or work events. You only live one. Enjoy your climbs in style and colorful ambiance.

The stories of theft are troubling. And in spite of billing themselves as a country club sports facility there is more discord than you'd expect in a "classy" club. Easy to talk to and also felt comfortable to be quiet, my haircut left me speechless, it was beautiful. Pros: -the changing rooms are outfitted with lockers, toiletries, changing stall, showers, sauna, steam room, hot tub, and swimsuit drying machines -awesome indoor and outdoor pools, with a water slide, lots of padded chairs, and pool bar -day passes and guest passes available.. You can also use the gym if you get a LifeSpa service that day -several options to get food, protein, etc if you need that -staff was friendly -towel service Cons:- I was overcharged for my tab at the pool, signage said $8 for Mango Cart but I paid like $12+tip -$200+ per month is just not in my price range -the number of weight machines seemed low compared to everything else, I went at 1pm on a Tuesday so I can only imagine how long I'd have to wait after 5pm. Some things only had 2 of that machine, I expect more for the money paid.

Structured chaos :p…read more I've hosted parties here, have been guests at parties here ( speaking for Gaithersburg location only), and I have come here for leisure ... today I am here for leisure ( kids are on spring break now ) this is always the perfect place to come to kill time and let your kids let loose. There always a lot going on but it still feels structured and that's what matters most lol. It's easy to book, parties or just regular jump time. Today I booked regular jump for 5pm. At 3:30 ( you can book same day within the hour). Parking is easy, location is safe, there's other amenities. They also have certain "events" on certain days . I know for my daughter's birthday we had her party on a glow in the dark night, and this is something they regularly offer. So there's variety and fun. It's been 4 years ( since we been coming here) and I can honestly say they become a go to.

Great for birthday parties to let kids just run around and burn off energy. But if you have little kids, you should follow them and watch them because most staff are teenagers and are not paying attention and other times, there's no staff. Everyone has to sign their waiver before, so they don't seem to care, but this can get dangerous. I know kids who have jumped on each other and broken bones because there was poor supervision! Today I saw a staff just look at me and not say a word when I was lecturing another kid to keep her hands to herself and not push anyone because she made a boy cry when she pushed him off the ledge at the foam pit while waiting for the kid before to move away. She denied it but several kids pointed her out - this is dangerous for the boy and the kid in the pit. The staff should've intervened and gave her a warning, but nothing!
