My review is solely based on the cycling department. I dealt with many staff members over the last few days trying to find the perfect bike for my intended use. To start I was greeted in a very friendly fashion by Kelsie. She was very attentive and did her best to help. She informed me she was new and if I had any questions above her knowledge she would get someone to assist her. As the case she got a guy named Darwin to help us. He was just as friendly but with a plethora of knowledge. I originally was looking at Specialized bikes but was quickly drawn to some other brands. They carry Santa Cruz, Specialized, Yeti and Kona which is what I ended up purchasing. Darwin educated me on the prices and what you get for the money. MTB " mountain bikes" range now days from the $450-$15k. I originally went in with wanting to spend on the low side of $450-550. After being educated on parts and what my intended use was I ended up spending 700 on a bike that I won't out grow and is highly upgradable. If you purchase a bike it comes with life time service! The prices here are fair and come with great customer service. I spent two days touring Abq looking for bikes and chose Sport System mostly based on how I was treated! If you need a bike this is the place to go. read more

A read-up of the current reviews on this place essentially issue the following points: - Great merchandise - Merchandise you can find anywhere - Great customer service - Terrible customer service Years back I came in here when I was considering some of those foot skins with toes, which is a purchase most Burqueños contemplate at one point or another, because only in the Land of Enchantment can one legitimately enter the opera wearing shorts, a t-shirt and plastic footwear. So I figured I'd check 'em out and I thought the customer service was great. I've visited to register for the Duke City marathon, again, great service. But that's about all I know on that front. From a merchandise standpoint, I'm definitely blown away. The snowboard and ski selection is bar-none best in the city, and the entire bottom floor is dedicated to bikes, a year-round activity here. And in my limited experience, the staff are experts (I had no problem getting their attention, but then, you know who I work for). They explained technical aspects about the equipment I was looking at and they made me feel comfortable about a purchase. Overall, I'd simply state that you should plan to be living on 505 time, here. You'll be spending some time, because you're going to be dropping a dime and you should be very comfortable with that purchase. I was disappointed with the customer service I received at Sports Systems today. We purchased a pair of snowboarding pants yesterday and decided to return them today. They were on sale but we were not informed that if we returned them it would only be for store credit. This is printed on the receipt, however since you only receive a receipt after purchase this is not helpful. The sales clerk today was also not helpful or sympathetic. read more

These guys also run a website called The Gear Lounge, and the customer service they provide is awesome. I had ordered a pair of skis that turned out to be out of stock, but rather than stiff me or ask me to shell out more, they subbed a pair of newer skis at the same price without any prompting. I just wish I lived nearby so I could give them more business! read more

He was very helpful, knowledgeable and patient in explaining what goes into each product in making his recommendations for what is appropriate for myself and my skill level. Last season, when I was first learning how to snowboard, I took a nasty fall going toe-side down the mountain and hit my head pretty hard (not wearing a helmet). Lesson learned! Later that day, I stopped by Sport System to get a helmet (safety first). I was looking around at all of the helmets for quite a while before I received any assistance. They weren't that busy and there wasn't anyone else in the helmet section so I don't know what the hold up was. But the guy that eventually helped me was nice and apologetic. I ended up getting one that was on sale, which helped a lot since they're kind of pricey. Since then, we've been here a few other times to checkout their outerwear, snowboard boots/bindings. The staff is very knowledgeable and helped us out a lot, but we did have to wait quite a bit for their expertise as they do spend quality time with each customer that inquires about their products. The prices are a little steep too, so I try to find stuff on sale. read more

Whoa, the staffs are friendly! I came to rent alpine ski/boots/poles. I walked into the rental shop, and in less than 5 seconds, I was greeted and helped by a nice guy who ushered me to the rental counter. And the rest of the rental process went very smooth, too. When I come back to the town next winter, for sure I'll be renting ski from Sport Systems. read more

The place to go for ski equipment in ABQ. My experience is limited to Megan for boots and Nate for skis. This is my second year going to Sport Systems for ski equipment and advice. The first year I was coming in asking for advice on how to manage poor equipment choices bought on my own. The second year I was coming in for better (much better) equipment choices in terms of boots and skis. Boots (Megan) - Megan fit me for boots that worked exactly as they should the first time out. This included having custom insoles made on the spot and heat molding the liner to eliminate hot spots in areas that initially had redness. This wasn't a generic heat molding, she cut out pieces of foam for the trouble areas and we put them on the feet for the heat molding process. Went out and immediately felt the difference, no pain and was able control the skis to a whole new level. Skis (Nate) - After explaining to Nate my experience with the old skis he was able to recommend skis that fit my size/weight/ability to demo. The demo skis were head and shoulders above my old skis. Even though my old skis were listed as 'beginner/intermediate' on Internet forums and review sites they were very hard for me to handle. Instead of just handing me a pair of skis and walking off, he explained how to get the most out of the demo skis and what to expect. They offered to buy my old skis and also apply the demo price to the cost of the new skis. I never write reviews, however, I figure there are many folks like myself who make blind purchases from reading ski site reviews or advice from a clerk that maybe has only skied a few years. My experience on the mountain has been significantly improved this year and well worth the effort to source properly fitted equipment. read more

I just had another great experience at Sports Systems. The core of skiing and most sports is your core and your feet. Gotta be strong and certainly comfortable for without either it will make for no fun. Well I just had a super custom ski boot fitting with new boots by Kara Willard, Master Boot fitter. Not only is she a master but she is a prolific skier and knows not just what you say, but has felt it one time or another...a key to a great boot fitter. She was very personable and knew the insides and out. Spent quality time even before any boots arrived to try on. We did three different ones but it was the first pair she picked that worked and became even better with custom fitting and insoles. A sign of a real professional is being able to nail it right away...but like a professional tried more than one option to verify what was best. My feet will be super happy. Happy feet happy days. On another note...Duane the Owner visited with me to be sure all was well all the while doing that with everyone else in the store while waiting on other customers too. He is a local ABQ company and I am so dam glad he is here in ABQ. This is the go to place for ski equipment/snow boarding in ABQ metro area. The ski areas owe a debt of gratitude to him, because... I cannot imagine trying to ski without a resource like that here in ABQ staffed with very knowledgeable, happy, down to earth people. I will say two years ago I had a problem and Duane accepted it, corrected it and made good on it. That was great!...and just like today another shining example as to why I support them and they support the customer. The company brands he sells are tops and those manufactures should be very proud to have an outfit like Sports Systems selling their products. They have a great best price system which makes them competitive with any internet deal. I buy from them because no internet purchase will take care of me the way they do and can and in a very reasonable time frame....which when there is fresh snow can be a day or hours. So for a strong core...the core of your equipment should come from Sports Systems...they can make it happen...and if you need top notch ski boot fitting and new skis as well...ask for Kara Willard. This place had the worst service that I have ever had. My dad and I went in to buy boots and bindings and we didn't get any help. Not a single employee asked if we were doing okay. One employee just sat there talking to a girl and another guy was pricing items, neither of them even asked how our day was or even looked at us. Lost out on about $1,500. read more

I took my bicycle in because it appeared to have a seized bolt and this place is well known locally. They weren't able to get the bolt out, put a gigantic gash into the carbon fiber and returned the bike to me covered in grease and some kind of solvent with a "we weren't able to get it out so we could cut it off for you." Pretty sure seeing the condition of the bike after this attempt: no thanks. Didn't even bother cleaning it up or apologizing for the damage. A place that treats others' property like it's garbage doesn't deserve your business. Thankfully, plenty of other bike shops in town that will probably give better service without destroying my bike in the process. read more

Policies are extremely misleading. Wall signs states, "We beat internet deals - 100% of the time! Even if you find it for $1.00" When asking Josh, the shop manager for the bike shop for a price match, he stated that he would not honor the price of the internet website and handled the situation poorly. If you're going to honor your word, take the signs down. Needless to say, I will be shopping elsewhere until the shops honesty and integrity changes. read more

The kids (10 & 14) were getting ski equipment for Christmas and we stopped in to a very busy store. We were greeted kindly and by the end of the process, Billy had won us over completely. Our 10 yr old was stubborn but Billy found ways to make it work. We ended up with boots, skis and poles for both kids and I feel like we made a buddy too. He was professional, knowledgeable, patient, and warned our trust. If Billy made a recommendation we knew we could trust him. We only visit NM once a year, but this would be the place to go for all our gear needs. read more

Knowing this was a possibility, Billy made sure I was making the right decision and his expertise/knowledge helped me choose the right boot for advanced skiing and performance, as well as the flexibility for hiking! #ABQ has lots of great Local Bike Shops and I've had the opportunity to get acquainted with a great many of them. Among my favorites is Sport Systems. I like Sport Systems for two reasons; 1) the staff in their shop are top-notch, always working to solve my issues without taking any more of my money than necessary. Recently I'd ordered a wheel to be delivered in a few days and was out the door when they called to say they found a wheel in-house - and for $20 less! Plus, when I took them my Copenhagen Wheel to mount they were so enthused they did the install at a very reasonable price because "they were learning, too." (The Wheel has had NO install issues and is a blast for my commuting, errands, and the like.) The other reason I like Sport Systems is they work hard to reward me for my #BuyLocal instincts. They guarantee they can offer the better value than the internet. When folks come in to try on their equipment (biking, hiking, skiing - if it's a people powered sport Sport Systems has it) and then shop it online Sport Systems is right there to make sure the customer gets the best value IN THEIR STORE NOT ONLINE. If that means free tunes for life - oh, yeah, I think it does. If it means lift tix with your ski purchase - oh, yeah, I think it does. If it means getting solid advice from people who know their s#it - oh yeah, it definitely does. read more

I took my 15 year old to look into getting his first trail bike. We heard about their sale and grand opening so we were looking toward to it. We got there at 3pm and it was not very busy. After 10 minutes and watching our 3rd associate walk by without saying a word, I asked for help. I explained to the salesperson that this is a first bike. He shows me a $1,000 bike...then looses interest and wanders away when we start looking at something on the lower end ($500). We had to stop another sales person to request a test ride. Terrible customer service. We will not be back. read more

Generously timed Winter Gear rental from a local business? Check. Help selecting running shoes, insoles, etc.? Check. Sponsorship of local races and events? Check. Friendly, personalized help? Check. Competitive price-matching against the Big Bad Interwebs? Check! Cutest Shop Dogs EVER?! Check!!! We've rented snow gear here, purchased from their Used Gear Sale, bought Running/Hiking/Snow shoes, insoles and other accessories, registered for races and chatted with their community partners at packet pickups, and even splurged on a bike tune-up. So we've pretty much covered the whole dang store, and my husband is IN LOVE with the dogs who have the run of the place. Yes, they can be a bit pricey on gear and clothing (I usually look/wait for sales for that stuff), but I would much rather spend my money here than some soulless corporate store. I've found that chatting up the employees, and asking questions, helps improve service overall, and who DOESN'T have at least something new to learn about their favorite sport(s)? Plus, they are SUPER generous with the whole 24-hour rental thing; it's more like 36 to 48 if you time it right. As someone who is rarely, if ever, on time (thank goodness the library eliminated late fees!!) that's the kind of laid-back approach I can appreciate. read more

My Dad recently moved here and I recommended he go to Sports Systems for a bike tire repair. Today he waited outside in a line to get his bike looked at. The man working there was busy talking to the person in line in front of my Dad for over 20 minutes. He never once asked what my Dad needed. Then another "friend" of the worker shows up and the worker pulls him to the front of the line and starts working with him. My Dad decided he'd go inside. Unfortunately, the experience was the same. In fact, the guy inside said they were too busy and to maybe check back in two weeks or so. Two weeks to get a flat tire repaired? Needless to say, my Dad won't be returning to Sports Systems again. Most likely, neither will the rest of my family. It's a shame because we like to support the local shops and we typical spend several thousand dollars a year at Sports Systems. These are the most helpful and courteous workers! Everyone is busy trying to make everyone happy. I wanted to take up skiing because everyone is very nice and helpful. They have a tremendous variety of items available from all the big names in sports. I only know about the ski and snowboard section because that is what my family is into. I was over whelmed with the selection and when we looked kind of lost we had two people there to answer questions and get us pointed in the right direction. One person in my group was looking for snowboard boots, but being a college student did not want to spend too much. He tried some new boots on, because he had picked them out before the sales person came to help. He told the sales person how the boot felt and the guy immediately stated that the boot was not the right one for him. Even though it was a high dollar boot! While the two discussed what he wanted, his skill level, where he would be boarding, and the huge fact that he is a poor college student, the salesperson brought over a rental boot in his correct size and told him all about it. Also helped him learn how to put the boot on and work it. He made a sale! My friend walked out with a pair of boarding boots that he really liked and felt comfortable for what it would cost him to rent for 2 days! Exceptional quality and a great price. Thank you Dillon for helping!!! Next up with DH. He had not bought new boots in years. The Avalanche sale was too good to pass up. Since DH has been skiing for ever he thought he knew what size he was and what was best for him. NOPE he did not. Again a very attentive staff member came over to see how he could help. He sized Dh correctly and then brought over several different brands of boots. I thought this was going to take forever because DH always takes forever picking out footwear. To my surprise the salesperson picked out the best boots for DH tastes and needs. The boots were all at different price ranges and brands. DH finally decided on the salesperson personal recommendation and off we went! Check out was a breeze as well. Very efficient and friendly. We got free lift tickets as well! Great place to buy sports equipment! Knowledgeable and friendly! read more

Never ever go to sport systems on Montgomery. The worst customer service ever. Did not check to see if my 7 year olds ski boots fit him and did not recommend a helmet for him. I can't even begin to lay enough compliments on this place. I went in just to look around and ask a few questions. I ended up test riding what would become my new mountain bike. They found a bike in my price range, loaded with essential high end accessories, fitted it to me, showed me how to maintain it and made sure I knew that it was cool to bring it back for any adjustments or tune ups. I received a great deal on a great bike by a solid 'avid biking' sales staff. These guys know bikes! read more

Great shop! I lease my two kids skis here every season. Great program with a solid selection of gear for the little ones. The shop matches all online sales (in store credit typically). I have gotten plenty of loft tix to places in CO and at Taos. Staff is helpful and if your in a pinch to have a tune or wax - they are usually all over it. read more

Please boycott this store with me. When I had an issue with the service done on my skis and asked to speak to someone about it the staff yelled at me and threatened to damage my skis so I didn't have to pay. I was so shocked and upset I paid, and left and vowed to never EVER go back. There are smaller independent shops that need support. Buy on the internet, or go to REI or just support a place that is not obnoxious and threatening. They have lost my support for life. Please shop else where, this store is staffed by arrogant aggressive people. read more

Second Roubaix from this shop. Have to say, both experiences have been excellent. The gentleman I made my first purchase with has since moved on, but Dave Ortiz was more than professional, and helpful setting up my new bike. Sale going on, so a lot was going in. He took the time to set me up the way I wanted. Fair trade value for my old Roubaix, and consideration on the accessories I added on. Picking up the bike when it was ready was a good experience as well. Dave was off, but the bike shop manager made sure that the machine was ride ready, and took time again to make sure I was happy. I have purchased bicycles, skis, shoes and innumerable clothes and accessories from Sport Systems. Any time I've needed help or to deal with exchanges or returns, they have been more than accommodating. I've not been as excited about the Avalanche sales the past few years but that is only one weekend a year. While their prices may not always be the best, service and policies more than make up for this. I not only want to support local businesses when I can, there is real value in the customer experience. I will continue shopping there as long as I can. read more

I rented skis for my 8, 12, and 13 year olds to go skiing this weekend. We waited in line for about a half hour and were then told to sit down on the square bench if you could find a spot. After my kids were passed up for other people coming later I stepped in an got someone. When the kids finally got to try on the boots and told the guy that they were to small and that they hurt he said that was the right size and would not get a different pair. Needless to say when we got on the mountain the kids had to cut the day short because the couldn't deal with the pain any longer. Also, my 8 year olds instructor said that he did great but that the boot kept popping out of the binding but that for legal reasons they could not make the necessary adjustments. Overall it was a terrible let me take your money and get you out the door experience with zero quality control. read more

Rent from these guys! My two boys and I went here after getting the shaft from REi (xcountry ski equipment). We decided to rent down hill skis as well and could not have been more pleased. The young staff was exceptionally helpful and free of the "attitude" that typically permeates sport shops in town. The staff chatted up my young boys and made us feel comfortable enough that we were not intimidated to ask questions. I noticed that people behind us in line were quickly acknowledge and attended to as well. The rental cost was reasonable and the equipment was of good quality. I can only hope that the rest of the staff (read: bike shop, which I typically avoid all around town like the plague) has the same patient customer service. It was so refreshing not to get the "gear head" treatment. Also, this shop has the absolute best clothing sales rack in town for outdoor wear! read more
