    Completely unprofessional.

Today, I had an appointment for an oil change, tire rotation, and inspection. All of this is routine and the car is new enough with very low miles, that there were no concerns. My issue is that I was there for nearly 3 hours for this service. I understand you are busy, but that is excessive for routine maintenance. After over two and a half hours, I walked into the service dept. and I could see multiple people in the garage area just standing there. I asked if it would be much longer and my car magically was done. I mean, if you are busy, get moving! People are waiting. It's your job. Instead, I had to sit for hours for something my local shop would have knocked out in 30 minutes. There's no excuse other than the manager is running a loose ship and employees are not being held accountable. Oh, and take a look at all the oil they spilled on the hood of my nice car. Unacceptable. I will not be returning and I definitely won't be purchasing anything from them ever again if this is the way customers are treated. My second huge beef is gross. I ended up sitting in the waiting area opposite the men's room for over 2 hours. I can tell you, 99% of the guys did not wash their hands after dropping a deuce, just splashing their hands and running the drier fan for a second. You're not fooling anyone. Even worse, after at least 6 guys made a deposit, hearing how all those dirty hands touched the door handle, the service guy who helped me went in, took a leak, and just walked out. The overall behavior was half-assed and disgusting and then to see a guy go in after all that and not even try to wash up was just gross. I didn't want to touch my key after all that. Funny, he told me that I would be getting a survey and he'd like all 10s. Not to please consider giving me some 10s, he would "like" all 10s. Yeah, that's not going to happen. Now I just want to sit here and scrub. Blech.

My engine, spark plugs, full pump etc were left dissembled. The nuts and bolts that were supposed to be put back into place.

She suffered a radiator reservoir explosion, and I had to pull over ASAP before a fire started. I had already been ready to retire her due to other future repair costs, but circumstances forced my hand early, so I got to work researching available and newer Subaru Outback models. I visited one large dealership within five days, but their staff were extremely duplicitous, so I promptly left feeling very misled and annoyed. Enter the exemplary and professional staff at Durham Auto Mart: Chip, Toby, and other colleagues who I did not have the pleasure of meeting. I found a listing on Carfax to Durham Auto Mart for a 2013 Subaru Outback that looked in great shape, awesome Carfax report, low mileage, and in an excellent price range. I called Durham Auto Mart to inquire, but Chip sadly and graciously informed me that another buyer had already made an offer. He promised to call me back if it fell through though. And that he did. I was sitting at home pondering how long it would take to find a better deal, when suddenly my phone rang, and Chip gave me some excellent news. As my luck would have it, the other buyer was militantly insistent on trading in his very, very old car, which was not in good enough condition to be of any resale value, and somehow this condition completely undid his commitment to the 2013 Outback. Chip and I spoke for over 30 minutes. I asked him intensive, detailed questions about the vehicle, and he answered all my queries with specificity and patience, and he deeply impressed me with his knowledge and passion for all automotive matters. He was so authentically convincing that I (wisely) chose to immediately book an Uber and head straight for Durham Auto Mart. On arrival Chip greeted me heartily, and we got straight to business. I took a long look at the Outback and its myriad new features, then Chip and I took it for a test drive. I absolutely loved how it handled and was sold on it within minutes. On return we began the long and laborious process of certifying credit, transferring insurance, signing innumerable documents, and even hit a bizarre snag whereby Equifax decided that I didn't exist! Chip handled the problem ably and with determination. We learned that it was simply an issue with my name (I have two middle names) and eventually the system cleared me with flying colors and a very reasonable interest rate. Throughout this process, there was no artifice or deception from either Chip or Toby. Both of these gentlemen were straightforward, honest, and did not pressure me at all. Durham Auto Mart's transfer fees are low compared to competitors, there are no hidden "junk" fees bundled in with the purchase, and Toby explained all my warranty and financing options in detail. Some dealerships might have tried to take advantage of my inexperience in buying a car, as after all this was the first vehicle I'd bought in 20 years, but Chip and Toby did the exact opposite. They acted in good faith and treated me with grace and respect throughout, and they were excellent conversationalists. I strongly and without hesitation recommend Durham Auto Mart as a business and endorse their staff as trustworthy individuals. They have been in operation for nearly 50 years and my experience with them abundantly demonstrates why they have endured for so long. Independent businesses are so important to support in an era of increased centralization and corporatization, so if you need a car, even from afar, give Durham Auto Mart a call. -Anthony Joyce

I purchased a new 2026 RX350h yesterday after comparing a preowned version and a new vehicle. They were exactly alike in every way - except the preowned was 2 years old, had 10k miles and needed to be detailed. The total price difference was $5,500, and the warranty on the preowned seemed substantially better. Sophia could sell me either one, and carefully gave me pros and cons on each vehicle. The preowned manager came out to talk with me after I offered less for the preowned than asking price. He obviously wanted me to buy preowned, but I was leaning toward new - despite the better warranty and lower price of the used car that was identical to the new. He was nice, but hard core wanted me to purchase the used one. I went to lunch while they detailed the used car. Upon return, Sophia gently pointed out items that became obvious to her after the car was cleaned up that I would have recognized over time, but were not apparent to my untrained eye: the car had multiple "dents" from a likely hailstorm. There was evidence on the tailgate of sanding and repainting, and overspray on the chrome trim. The vehicle, despite a clean Carfax report, had either been wrecked, or at least damaged enough that it had required substantial body work. I am massively thankful to Sophia. She is incredibly well studied and recognizes things I never would have. I would've paid over $50k for a substantially damaged used car if not for her. I do not hesitate to recommend her and her expertise. Now, as for Johnson Lexus Pre-owned... not so much. Thank you, Sophia!!!

Flange makes a comeback, what happened…read more.. Johnson Lexus Durham service used to extremely reliable (barring one past episode 5 years ago)- I actually took my car for 10 years to the same service specialist. However, my recent experience has me rethinking... They incorrectly failed my 2015 Lexus on the state inspection - tire tread was 2.3 as reported by them, while low from a safety standpoint, it is not a failure by state inspection (which is at less than 2), they required replacing four tires at $1340. Which is $445 above Costco charges. Secondly the rear 12v lighter wasn't working, it was a fuse that is easily accessible they put in a charge for $120 and had told me some sort of fusible link - I didn't know what that meant initially I approved it and upon further research and their own invoice said it was a fuse. Those fuses are cheap and easily accessible and shouldn't require 1 hour of labor. Old Lexus used to do this sort of service complementary sometimes. There were multiple errors that seemed to be designed to give them more money, and I am wondering if service management has changed that pushes for more revenue and profitability margin than serving the customer. While they corrected both of these errors and reversed $120 charge and redid inspection and passed without tires having to be changed. I hope they improve and not continue this path - this is path that Honda Durham was on and I moved on from that brand. I was planning on purchasing an RX-350 due to comfort and ease of servicing with Lexus as well as the vehicles, but has me rethinking if I should go all electric with Rivian R2 instead in the future. Oh, BTW, what is that flange you ask, that was just non-existing fusible links in modern cars - its joke for that have seen old Seinfeld episode :-)

I tell them NO and stop by the Advance Auto Parts down the road and replace the air filters and wipers in their parking lot and save about $500.
