Whoever is running this operation, it stinks. I have been trying for 3 weeks to get an appointment to adopt 2 male pups from the same litter. I have called and left messages and emails and no response back. The dog they had for 2 months was in no way trained or bathed. We had to teach her how to use the stairs let alone potty training her. She was so bad on the leash that we had to return her before the week was out (she chewed through two of them and that's a legal risk I'm not taking.) We were promised a full refund when I returned her. I didn't even ask for one. It was volunteered by the large woman at the desk. We ended up charging back the cost because, of course, they never gave us the refund they promised. I hope the dog we returned got to live in a home on acreage because her hatred of leashes was legendary. Also the place was absolutely filthy and gave me quite a severe asthma attack. Use the humane society or Kootenai. Never EVER go to Spokanimal. read more

I'm very impressed with how I received my pup! How ever I'm not impressed on how they spend the money to neuter and do shots and chip but they don't bother to DNA the animals to be able to list there proper breads this I feel is extremely irresponsible and set theses animals up for failure. I was told my pup was a pit mix No he is not he's is going to be a 100 to 140lb boy black mouth cur. I needed a medium size pup for my new service dog Not a giant hyper boy I would not give him up for anything in the world thank god I have 40 years of training experience and have hunting/tracking hounds in my younger years. We adopted a dog from this shelter. They were super accommodating with us bringing in our dog to see if they liked each other. Gave us time and different places for them to be together. Fast forward - It worked out great! The two love each other and are great together. We are so fortunate to have found Annie at your shelter. We adore her! For some of the comments from other people: Annie (not her shelter name) was not house trained and pulled like a mule on the leash. It took time to work on training. Yes, she was a monster (I still call her that ;) ) and "out of control" but now she is muuuuuch better with manners on and off leash. We still have room for improvement, but she is a jewel and none of us could imagine being without her. Thank you to the staff at Spokanimal for making our lives better! read more

We had a 5 year old female dog spayed at this animal clinic. She was spayed due to having 3 failed pregnancies, after a very successful one. Her last one, she developed a bad infection, which we thought was going to take her life, but, proper antibiotics and care she pulled through. We made the decision to have her spayed, after the trauma she endured. During these past few months she gained some weight, as she wasn't able to be as active as normal.A We stopped feeding our dog according to their instructions at 8 pm the night before scheduled surgery. We were instructed to arrive at 8:30 am, but traffic detours delayed us and we arrived maybe 5 minutes late. Well, this clinic has a middle aged woman vet tech. When I dropped our precious dog off, that woman was very harsh with her mouth. She said, she was going to give my dog the sedation shot for her surgery immediately, which surprised me. And when that woman came over to me holding my dog on a leash, she began to say that my dog better not bite her... not just once but, repeated saying this around a half dozen times. I explained that she is a very tender happy dog and has never attempted to be aggressive to anyone... yet, she just repeated that statement over and over... with an aggressive tone in her voice. I held my dog by her collar and my dog didn't even flinch. So, I asked what time I needed to return to pick up my dog!?? She, in her harsh tone, said later in the afternoon, because she was given a human size dose of sedation meds, because of her size. My dog is normally around 75-78 lbs when fit. Well she gained some weight... about 10 lbs over the past 6-8 months, during her infection time mostly. Well, we arrived at the clinic to pick up our dog, around 4:30-5:00 pm as instructed. That harsh mouthed woman immediately began to shoot her mouth off about our dog having diarrhea on the floor, after her anesthesia started to wear off, and that they didn't have a kennel for her. Then she started shooting her mouth off about our dog being obese. And in her anger, she added more to our bill, claiming it was because our dog was obese. I will add... that harsh mouthed woman is not miss fitness... and looked fatter than our dog, for her size. The only good thing about going to this surgery clinic, is the veterinary doctor that performed the actual surgery. He is a super nice, kind, gentleman. That woman should not be working there... nor any other place that works on animals... nor, where she has to communicate with people. read more

Leukemia is contagious and the cats you adopt from Kitty Cantina/Spokanimal likely all have it. Please make sure you get them tested for leukemia before adopting from this place. read more

The dogs are covered in urine and the floors are only partly cleaned. The staff is awful. This place should be SHUT down. A lot of the dogs were sick with kennel cough. read more

While I'm sure Spokanimal has good interests, more people need to know how they are ran. I adopted an 8 month old kitten who I named Luci in February this year. They told me she was healthy, recently spayed, and that one of her eyes was a little runny but they had already treated it. She was attached to me immediately and has been my shadow ever since. Lively, affectionate, and always vocal when I came home, Luci quickly made me a cat person. Fast forward to now. She can't walk without falling over, she can't hold her head without wobbling, we have to coax her to eat food, and can't breathe properly. After blood work from an actual vet, we found out that she has feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV), which has caused inflammation around her organs and brain. We have no other cats in the house and we were informed she most likely has had it since we adopted her (contracting from prior to Spokanimal or while there) as often times there are no signs that a cat has it but gets it from other infected cats. As of now there is no cure in the US but we can pay $4,000 to have medicine shipped from Europe in hopes that it will help in time before her body complete shuts down. When asked why we were told she was healthy, we were told well she appeared healthy. They do not run tests, they simply pick up the animals, spay or neuter, and put them up for adoption with a cute name and a fake bill of health. Had they ran a blood panel, this would have shown up. Spokanimal has a "adopt as is" clause in their contract as if our future new family members are used cars. While I understand Spokanimal is not necessarily at fault for Luci getting sick, I feel they should have an obligation to ensure the health and well-being of the pets they put up for adoption for new and excited, loving families. Since she is having to be force fed, can't walk, and has dropped 2 pounds (she only weighed 7 when we got her), we now have an appointment with her vet tomorrow to euthanize so she isn't suffering as her condition takes over more of her tiny body. Thankfully we were able to take her to the vet and pay for the tests so she didn't continue to suffer, and my kids and I are able to say goodbye and make sure she isn't hurting anymore. In memory of my precious service dog that passed away on 17 April 2024, I decided to donate food to Spokanimal. This was a financial hardship for me. I bought $75 of dog and cat food as part of their Stock the Shelves drive announced by KREM news. I took it directly to the Spokanimal shelter because I wanted information about their program for foster care volunteers. What a mistake. I got yelled at by Spokanimal staff for accidentially opening the wrong entrance door. Then when I did manage to find the correct door the staff where extremely unfriendly. They didnt care or seem the least bit appreciative of the pet food donation. They did not want to talk to me about their foster care program but instead said just to fill out an application online. Another thing I was concerned about was how badly the Spokanimal office smelled. While I didnt see the kennel facility or any animals, I can only hope the animals that Spokanimal have taken in are not living in filthy conditions or are being neglected by staff who came across to me as mean and uncaring. I walked away from doing a good thing feeling like my donation wasn't really needed or appreciated by Spokanimal staff. They also made it very clear that my volunteering as a foster care person was not needed nor would my help be appreciated. Really an unfriendly and closed off pet shelter. read more

My daughter wanted a kitty so bad to keep her company. She went to Spokanimal and adopted an adorable 4month old. I helped her pay the 130.00 adoption fee which included spay and all current shots and health care. She had the kitty one week and took her in for a post op checkup and they told her the kitty has ringworm! What??? They gave her An infected kitty. Now she has to sanitize and clean her whole condo and keep the kitty in a crate quarantined for 4 weeks with daily oral and topical medicine and biweekly baths. Her other option was to surrender the kitty to them for 8 weeks. She is so overwhelmed by this and I think it is totally Irresponsible of Spokanimal to not make sure their adoptive animals are properly treated and disease free when they are adopted. Shame on you Spokanimal. You need to be more diligent with the care of your adoptees. They are giving her the crate to use and not charging for the medications to treat the ring worm, but this should not be an issue in the first place if they had been more careful. Beware of this issuif you are thinking if adopting a pet from the place. I do not recommend them. Update: This place is only open 2 hours on Tuesday and Thursday. For working people this just doesn't fit. They don't answer the phone and don't return messages. My daughter needed more medication to treat her kitty and they didn't give her enough to last till she was to come back. When she came back on the day they told her to return for a recheck they were closed. She found a nurse at the back door who was surprised they made her an appointment as the doctor was on vacation. She said she would check the kitty and told her she was clear. This is a joke. BEWARE OF THIS CLINIC. read more

The woman who was helping us was standing near the cages so I noticed a huge cat, as big as a puppy, looking at me. Once I saw him I knew he was ours. We ended up adopting a 6 year old, over weight, lazy old man cat simply because his eyes told me to. He has settled into our home nicely and we've discovered he is chatty and loves to play. Our new baby came microchipped, neutered and up to date on his shots all for only a $65 adoption fee. If we ever get another cat for our big, fat baby boy to have a friend we will go back to Spokanimal. read more

I have been a customer of theirs for years. I have used their clinic, bought and donated items to their thrift store and volunteered at past events or held events in their building. As a dog rescuer I have pulled many dogs from them when the dogs were too kennel stressed for placement so needed more training before they could be placed. I have also transferred some dogs from us that we got that we were not able to place when folks come to us for purebreds in our breed. I transfer our mixes we get once we get them socialized and retrained that way we can make room for more. They have placed them all in three days or less but most in less than a day! Bravo when they place 1,000 pets a month on average. So I am there about 100 times a year and take them around 40 dogs a year and an occasional cat. We live in the country so we get a lot of cat dumping out here. I know I can always take kitties to them when needed. The place is well run and clean. Their staff are friendly and fun. I love being a partner with them to help them place many unwanted pets in this area. I see them constantly at pet events and we are often right next to them so I see all their volunteers who adore the animals in their care. The best part? Their staff came to the dog rescue and inspected us in person in order to be a shelter partner with them! Other shelters have folks fill in forms and anyone can be dishonest on a form so that impressed me they cared enough to inspect us in person. People in this community always need quality animal shelters and this is one of the best that I have ever worked with in my almost 29 years of dog rescuing. I adopted a cat and 3 days later he had snotty nose and red marks on his body (he had to be shaved). Took him in to the Spokanimal clinic and they told me he was fine. They said his skin was from being shaved and as long as his snot was clear he was fine. Well 3 days later he can hardly breath and my other cat, who was kept away from new cat, has snotty nose. Went to my vet and $400 later and cats will hopefully recover. Oh and red marks are ring worm. Spokanimal told me it's the risk I take adopting an animal. read more

My son adopted a cat through pet smart The cat had no tail and was told that the red sore was just the stub healing. Could not get into the clinic within the week because of COVID-19. When he was finally able to get the cat into the vet he found out the cat had a serious problem with its Anus coming out. When you call Spokanimal you get a message from March 20 and can never reach anyone. Was able to get a message to them through petsmart and was told that would do nothing for this animal. I don't know how a company claims to be about animals could care so little for them to allow one to be adopted with such a problem. Will never adopt another animal from them ever again. read more

I wish I could rate them with negative stars..I don't even know where to begin because my family and I's whole experience here was awful and unprofessional. (PLEASE READ THE WHOLE THING). My family wanted to adopt a cat so I tried calling them to see if the had any orange colored short haired cats. The building is over twenty minutes away from us so we wanted to make sure before we went there. I called MULTIPLE times and there was no answer each time. I left voicemails but to no avail. We ended up just heading down because no other place had the specific cat type we were looking for. When we arrived, there were plenty of workers and they couldn't explain why they weren't answering my many calls. Alas they had a 2 month old orange kitten. She had a creme colored sister and I couldn't bare to separate them. They are named Penny (orange kitten) and Saphira (creme kitten). Saphira had a dark wet spot under her eye from it leaking and the worker helping us told me she had been sick but was better now and the watery eye would get better also. We took them home and they were so upitty and playful with each other. After a week of having her, Saphira's eye was not getting better. We took her to the Spokanimals clinic and ended up buying $35 worth of the Vaseline type medicine in hopes that it would cure her poor eye. Then she got worse. Another week went by and she wasn't eating, she had the runs, she was absolutely lathargic. Not her normal self at all. We took her to a different clinic and set an appointment up for the following morning, saying take her to the ER if anything changes. That night we had to rush her to the emergency room because she was throwing up and we didn't think she'd make it through the night. The doctor was incredibly helpful and I am so grateful for him. He did end up telling us that SPOKANIMALS has been selling sick kittens and he was surprised Saphira had lasted as long as she did. She had a respiratory infection. This visit ended up costing almost $200 and he told us to go to Spokanimals and ask them to cover the wages since similar situations have been happening for the past 6 months. They should have kept her and nurtured her before lying to me and sending me home with a sick kitten that I now have to pay more for because of their mistakes. I once again went through the problem I had before of trying to reach them over the phone and over the period of a week I didn't get any response. I drove down and brought them the receipts and explained why I was upset and would appreciate them fixing their wrong doing. I was given the run around for another week. They finally called me and told me that if I had purchased their insurance they could have helped. I'm appalled and saddened about this murderous shelter's greed. read more

This place does very well for what they are given. They run on donations and grants. The employees care deeply for the bond between the person and pet. They are kind and love the job and the animals as if their own. As for the recent negative reviews about a cat that was ear-tipped; please know the whole story. The cat was trapped a block away from the owners house. Why was the cat not on the owners property? Isn't it irresponsible for the owner not to keep the pet contained? SpokAnimal does not do animal control. They are an adoption facility with a very awesome clinic. They help neighborhoods and our comminity out with spay neuter programs (like trap/neuter/release), and low cost vaccinations and microchips. When cats are brought in in a trap they do not display the best qualities. They are scared. They don't understand what's going on. They are grumpy, aggressive and quite dangerous. Its not SpokAnimals fault that their first impression of a cat in a trap was aggressive and potentially feral. It probably even soiled itself for goodness sakes. Its a shame that someone couldn't keep their pet inside and or on their own property and an "ear-tip" happened; but its also a blessing that some stray dog also didn't kill the cat because of a negligent owner. read more

I HAVE a great vet - he's expensive and worth it - but I get EVERYTHING done here that I can. Their people are wonderful, their services humane, their prices are reasonable and they are so good to both of my fur babies. I get vaccinations and nail trims and spay and neuters here. Anything complex goes to the vet - but for everything else, Spokanimal is the very, very best. I also support them with my cash and kind donations, as well as designate them as the recipients from my Amazon Prime account. They deserve it! read more

We adopted a cat that came from Tennessee. He became very sick a week after we got him. I took him to our Vet twice and they gave him medication and fluids and said that there was nothing else they could do for him. I called Spokananimal and brought our cat back in and for 4 straight days they gave him fluids and medicine. Today he is playing like a regular kitty. I took my dog here to get neutered because their clinic was the cheapest place in town. I wish I'd asked around first because I later found out most people have a bad opinion about the place. A week later I had to take him back because he wasn't healing properly. The vet assistant was very nice, but she was the only one. The rest of the staff was indifferent at best. The vet acted like she was first afraid of my dog, then disgusted, and rude on top of it all. She did not look like an animal person at all. Next time I'll pay the few extra dollars at my regular vet to get the care and LOVE my pet deserves. read more
