When I was 23 years old, I had two traffic accidents in less than a week. I have to say that it was one of the worst weeks of my life because that meant that I had two whiplash injuries. After that, I spent two weeks on a bed, with a lot of pain, trying physical therapy, which it helped at the time. For job-related reasons, I moved to Richmond seven years later, with also seven years of moderate to severe chronic back pain. This pain was associated with frequent headaches, shoulder pain, and a lot of terrible sleeping time. My wife recommended me to go to Dr. Mulvaney after she received a complimentary massage in her workplace because she thought that I was going to benefit from it. Could you imagine that after visiting orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, neurologist, physical therapist, countless imaging studies including MRI, that I could benefit from it? I wasn't sure about it, but I decided to give it a shot because after all, I had so much to win. Trust me when I say this, I don't wish for anyone to experience this kind of pain, but if you have, I definitely recommend this center. When I got there, everyone was so Profesional, asking questions that no one ever asked me before leading to a feeling that these people actually care about my well being. Then, after two weeks of therapy, my headaches diminished not only in frequency but also in intensity, and I started to get better rest during my sleep time, which by the way improved my mood significantly. I have to say that I never thought that my back would get better, but after just two months of therapy, I was a different person, with more energy. I have gotten many, many massages over the years. I would try them out through Groupon. Eventually, before I retired in 2017, I settled on getting a massage every three weeks. The massage therapist at Spinal Correction Center was really excellent. Then he retired and Sonya came on board. I get a massage from her every month. She is very experienced and I can honestly say that she is absolutely one of the very best in town. She's very knowledgeable about the body and how to tell when there are problem areas and how to fix them. Also her massages are very sophisticated and they feel fabulous. Had a massage with Jordyn today, and it was exceptional. I walked in exhausted, had actually thought about cancelling earlier because I was so tired. Jordyn asked me what areas were of concern, so she would know what to target. She spoke to me about areas of tightness and had some suggestions to help with my leg pain. You can choose whether you want to carry a conversation, or complete silence. I enjoyed conversing with Jordyn, though the relaxing soft lighting, table and peaceful music lulled me into a meditative state. I started going to the Spinal Correction Center in September after experiencing sever pain in my left hip/leg region. Dr. Mulvaney identified some degeneration in my lower back via x-rays. He worked out a plan for me that I have stuck to religiously and am in almost zero pain today. In addition, everyone there is so friendly and timely. Massage therapists from SCCR came to my place of business to give free chair massages, which I think is a great benefit for those of us who sit at desk's all day. During the massage, the team made a hard sell to me to come in for a consultation with the chiropractor. I scheduled my appointment and made my way in. $67 a visit and a massage is a great deal, no matter if you plan on following through with care or not. My initial understanding was that I'd have a consultation and an adjustment at my first appointment, and then I could make a second appointment for my massage. At the first appointment, I did have a consultation and was then given the order to get x-rays taken. I did walk-in x-rays at the closest Bon Secours facility (they were great by the way) and returned to the office two days later for my follow up. At my follow up, the chiropractor reviewed my x-rays with me and I was given some very concerning news. He told me that I had the beginning stages of degenerative disc disease, a compressed disc and the start of a bone spur on one of the vertebra of my C-spine. On top of that, he told me that my C-spine did not have enough of a curve and that this could lead to significant structural issues down the line. I was presented with a 52-visit plan on-site with a bottom line of close to $3,000. Now, everyone's insurance is different, but mine, unfortunately, does not cover chiropractic care so I was hesitant to jump on board with a course of treatment that would put me out of pocket $3k. They pushed hard on my committing to the plan telling me that I would receive a discount if I paid the lump sum that day, or if I split the payment into 2 or 4 installments. I needed time to figure out what I wanted to do, so I asked to pay for my appointment that day (the $67 only includes a consultation and the massage - the adjustment cost me an additional $55), and I proceeded with my massage. At that appointment, they booked ALL of my appointments for the following year. Shortly after what I can now safely say was my LAST appointment at Spinal Correction Center, I decided to seek a second opinion and put all 52 appointments on hold. I sought the expertise of a spinal specialist at Tuckahoe Orthopedics. The doctor looked at my x-rays and saw absolutely no cause for concern and mentioned that if the chiropractor had told me that he could "fix" the curvature of my C-spine he was mistaken. He said that adjustments are great for acute pain or injury, and that I could do that if I wanted, but that I would be just fine without. Though, he did recommend lobbying for a standing desk at work :) I am really glad that I sought a second opinion in this case. I feel that while the folks at Spinal Correction Center are very nice, that their bottom line is more important to them than actual patient care. I feel like I was fed misinformation in an attempt to get me to sign on the dotted line, and this caused a lot of anxiety about my health when there was no real cause for concern. Needless to say, I won't be returning to SCCR for any care, chiropractic or otherwise. read more

The website says that the Spinal Correction Center of Richmond offers "pampering for your busy lifestyle" and it is like "escaping stress and experiencing bliss." I have had several good massages there. It is chiropracter's office, and I expect to hear patient's arriving and being greeted by the receptionist. But this evening I had a massage that was like none other--children were running up and down the hall and screaming for the last 15 minutes of what started as a really good massage (applause to calm therapist Dave who tried his best to relax me while the children were screaming). I complained that the stress releasing effect of my massage was compromised by the the screaming children. I was told that this is a doctor's office and I should go to a spa next time. Ouch. Maybe a little sympathy would have worked better? An offer of a discount on the next massage at quieter time? Anyhow, if you want to escape stress and experience bliss, I do not recommend getting a massage at the spinal Correction Center. The massage therapists are great, but the set up is just not good for reducing stress. read more

In addition to Dr Mulvaney's excellent level of chiropractic care, they have two outstanding massage therapists that make Spinal Correction Center a one stop shop for your wellbeing. I had lower back pain and was unable to sit or stand without causing pain, Doctor Mulvaney was recommended, I went for my first visit and the Staff was very accommodating, I filled out the insurance paper work and had an exam by Doctor Mulvaney, an X-ray was requested to determine if he could treat my issue. I had an X-ray and went back to his office and was treated and after the 3 visit the pain has gone away and not an issue anymore. I was taught different types of exercise that would strengthen my lower back muscles, I would recommend this Doctor to all my friends and co-workers in Law Enforcement. I've been seeing Dr. Mulvaney since early 2012. Everyone in the office is helpful and friendly. Dr.Mulvaney, Cynthia and Brittany are always there to greet you with a smile. I truly believe this place is a sham! I completely agree with "L.R."'s review from 7/10/2017 and with S.F.'s from 8/6/2015 and other negative reviews on here because they are telling the truth! This "Spinal Correction Center" is in business to take advantage of people and take their money! They are selling its business services on LivingSocial (like Groupon) which should have been a red flag to me to begin with but I was hurting so I thought they would help. The coupon deal was for a 30 minute massage and "A comprehensive consultation and spinal exam". The best part about it was the massage by Leland. He definitely is genuine and knows his trade. The sham is the "doctor" and his "comprehensive consultation and spinal exam". The entire process is a sales machine. The front desk people are super nice and friendly - which is wonderful but after two visits there you can see that the push is for sales, sales, sales. They take you into a room with a very old xray machine...the "sales girl" is the xray technician as well the doctor's assistant / "sales" person which was completely odd. She actually stood in the small room with the machine which made me wonder...."is this xray machine real?!"...."why would she stand in there unprotected and not behind the normal radiology protective walls?"....So, she then takes you to a room and pulls up the "xrays" on the computer really quickly. At that point, I honestly felt like the xrays were not mine. She began the sales job with a few comments on the xrays (She is not a chiropractic doctor, remember). Then she left and Dr. Mulvaney came in for the "consult"....the consult for the "corrective care program" was that my back (Note: my back is not hurting) needed over 40 spinal adjustments for a cost of approximately $2,600! After his consult, the sales person came back into the room with the cost of his recommended spinal corrections....She told me that "don't worry - it only takes about 10 minutes so you can slip in and slip out quickly". Wow. Okay...I will pay you over $2,500 for this doctor to quickly crack my back? She then proceeded to push, and push for the sale and seemed slightly upset when I told her "no" - even though they had a payment plan. Why wouldn't I sign on the line even with a payment plan?! ha! I since had an xray and there is nothing wrong with my spine. Another reviewer wrote this: "I feel like I was fed misinformation in an attempt to get me to sign on the dotted line, and this caused a lot of anxiety about my health when there was no real cause for concern." - THAT IS EXACTLY HOW I FELT but my gut was telling me to get out of there. I walked out of there shaking my head. I should have known better...what medical business needs a Groupon? My advice - stay away from this place. If you're back hurts or whatever, please see an orthopedic doctor. Mulvaney and the sales machine should be ashamed. read more

I wouldn't recommend this place. They go around to local businesses offering new client "specials", however, they don't actually deliver on their promises. I signed up for a deal of 2 chiropractic appointments and one massage, which would have been a good deal and I probably would have come back if they'd actually done anything during those appointments (aside from the massage, which was good). They don't do any adjustments or anything during the 2 chiropractic appointments, except try to sell you on their practice! My recommendation to the business, if you are trying to bring in new business, actually deliver on your promises. When a customer is told they will receive 2 chiropractic adjustments for a special price, but then you don't do any work, they think your business is a sham. read more

I do not recommend this chiropractor especially if you have Medicare. I was told when making the appointment that they take Medicare and will file the necessary paperwork but that is not what happened. I filled out new patient info on line and then again when I got there was asked to pay up front which I did (do not do this)!! I was then taken to an exam room and asked many more questions by an assistant. Then Mulvaney came in and examined me, after he had done that he started in with...some of my patients get Medicare payments without any problem but others do not. He then said in order for him to treat me he would need an X-ray which he could not do and I could not get paid through Medicare. Had I known this up front, I would not have made the appointment but could have gone to a medical doctor and gotten one done prior to the appointment. I asked for my money back and was told that was payment for the exam...well that is fine but I was never given the results of the exam by Mulvaney...instead I received a call from Cynthia to say she would mail them to me. I have no way to interpret the info on the form I was mailed....most consisted of questions that were asked from the assistant of me. I first went to a Chiropractor in 1983 and have used them since, so I am not new to this type of therapy. The only reason that I did not go back to my original Chiropractor is that he does not file insurance and since Mulvaney said they do I decided to take a chance since he has gotten so many positive reviews. After my experience, I find it hard to believe that they are even legitimate reviews. I told the story to my daughter who works in the medical industry for over 20 years and she had recently gone to another chiropractor, Dr. Zabinsky, and could not believe the treatment I received with Mulvaney. Needless to say I am angered and feel like I have been taken, especially after I paid for so called exam and also that this person has all of my personal medical information. Excellent chiropractor. He's improved my posture and has helped me with significant improvement in mobility following a sports injury. The office is kid friendly, easy to schedule, and will work with you on payment plan if needed. They also have fresh baked cookies around lunch time! He also has lots of trigger point tools to work out your body while you wait- this helps me make the most of my visits.
