Let me first of all say that I secretly (OK publicly) like the fact that everything in California closes down at 2ish. In Europe parties start around 1 (in Argentina even at 3AM), and that is hard if not impossible to implement in a busy schedule because it affects you for a couple of days (I'm an early bird too so that doesn't help) if you're able to make it in the first place. In case you are a die hard and a better party er than I am, Spin is open until 4AM (no alcohol after 2AM in case you can't live without).
I'm more of a indie/alternative/rock/small band music lover but I grew up with barely hip-hop in clubs (I'm not a hip-hop fan) and in a dance music capital, so I still like going to a dance club every once in a couple of months. Spin is a dance club like it's supposed to be and different than in downtown: warehouse style, electronics, lasers, in the middle of nowhere, cool crowd.
I've been here twice so far: first time a Japanese dj I didn't know (Sashi Tomei if I spell it correctly) and I was very impressed. This place attracts some very big names in the dance scene: Kaskade recently (-missed that one but my roommate still talks about it-) and last month Sander Kleinenberg- who absolutely rocked the house. Another Dutch dj Tiesto plays here once a year or so as well, and all of these big names play at the biggest clubs and parties worldwide (and make gazillions of money) so I respect the place for the fact that it's able to attract these names...
* the place is spacious, big dance floor. Fits hundreds of people.
* several floors, second floor looks out over the first (dance) floor.
* people actually come here to dance and have a good time (talking is hard anyway with this music).
* the highest floor is a cool outside roof top with heaters, dj's often hang out here after their set too.
* Sound system could be better but that's only compared to major places, so overall good job.
* location: free parking, kind of deserted area so good for a dance club
* attracts a very cool crowd, nice mix, bit older
* open until 4AM in case you can make it that far (I can't...i'm too old already haha)
* women are in the minority here, and only for that I would give it an extra star: no 45 minute wait for the restrooms for girls that bring a purse with their complete make-up set or girls who spend hours in the toilet or go together (?). Most women actually wear clothes too! I can see that as a guy you may not like this point hehe, so the guys that come here come mainly for the dance music.
* if you come in before 10 you usually get a free drink. Can't say much about the drink quality since I'm not a cocktail lover.
* Friday nights with big names are cool and often sold out (buy tickets in advance if you don't want to wait in line!!!! or come before 10): check the line-up first.
* clouds of mist and lasers
* something different than downtown clubs: different music, crowd and scene. Friendly bartenders/security.
* there is usually a $20 dollar cover when the big names play, which is very reasonable (Google what they earn and where they play and you see why... it's unbelievable what they make in an hour... ).
I'm surprised a lot of people have never heard of this place, probably because of the name changes and location. Roger Sanchez is coming up this May, and that's one of the biggest dj's worldwide. Hats off to Spin for scoring him to play here. If you like hip-hop music, simply don't go here. If you don't like crowds or want a high quality drink every 5 minutes, don't go here either or stay at the roof top. If you go out to score chicks, don't go here either. If you appreciate electronics/ dance/ house music, check their line-up, dance among other dance lovers and you will have a blast. read more
