This is the best 21+ venue for electronic music in San Diego. Hands down.
If you aren't a BIG fan who regularly follows EDM and can appreciate the talent booked at this place, than it's probably not for you.
My review strictly revolves around the Friday night events hosted by Giant Entertainment. They often have top 40/rap on Saturdays, but I only go on Fridays.
This venue is music focused, plain and simple. Those looking for exotic metropolitan decor should look elsewhere. The VIP lounges are simple, but well done. The rooftop bar has a somewhat beach theme, and is nice and relaxed.
The main room has THE BEST sound system in San Diego. I've been to all the hot spots in the gaslamp, and no room booms like the main room at SPIN. It's been well engineered and doesn't just sound like a giant subwoofer. If you want a club to do a big DJ justice, this is the one. The second room upstairs has pretty good sound as well, but doesn't compare to the main room.
The lighting is what distinguishes this club IMO. No other club has invested in quality lighting to the extent that SPIN has. Considering they cater to the EDM crowd, it's somewhat expected, but they still impress me every time I go in there. I work in entertainment staging and lighting, and this club impresses me every time I step in it. The new laser/disco ball combo they just added adds on to an already incredible installation.
The rooftop patio is a cool concept with good authentic roadside stand mexican food and a bar as well. They offer tacos and nachos which taste great around 1am after putting back a few drinks, and the view is great. My only grief is the fact that this area is always PACKED, and even though its outdoors it gets rather stuffy and hard to move around.
This club brings in the BIGGEST talent in electronic dance music. Since Giant took over, I have seen DJ Rap, Max Graham, Sharam, The Crystal Method, Felix Da Housecat, and Kaskade, amongst others. You will see this talent nowhere else in San Diego, and the headliners are reason enough to come see this place. The opening DJs vary from some real crowd rockers to some that make me wanna go to sleep to some that make me think I could do better in the booth. However, they usually are good at setting the mood for the night.
Cover isn't horrible if you take advantage of the many discount guestlist options, however, it's not cheap either (usually $10 or so). However, considering the talent that plays there usually, its a bargain compared to Vanguard or Avalon in LA.
The people there are generally EDM fans, although some of the downtown crowd spills over. One of my favorite aspects of this place is NO DRESS CODE. It feels great to leave work at 6, go home, relax in a t-shirt and jeans, and then leave directly for the club without having to change clothes. If you think you need to dress up to have fun, you're missing the point. The crowd is usually pretty sparse until about 11, but the atmosphere is still pretty good early, even if the place seems a bit empty.
My only complaints, and the reason I didn't give this place 5 stars, are two things. First is the bar and bartenders. Drink prices are expensive, and there are almost never any drink specials. Anything well is atleast $9, and if you even want a mid-shelf liquor, plan on spending $11-13 a drink. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me. The drinks are also somewhat weak for what you spend (this is a commonly known thing, but worth mentioning). The bartenders are generally pretty good at getting everyone's drink, and I've had good luck with visiting the bar early on in the night and tipping often and early.
My second complaint is the coat check. Lots of other clubs in SD offer coat check for free or $1-2. Here its 4 dollars, which was a bit of shock to me. This and the drink prices gives me a feeling that the club is trying to gouge it's customers out of money, which seems so weird considering they offer lots of good deals on cover.
Overall this is still my favorite 21+ hangout in SD. If you avoid the obvious money traps like the coat check and the expensive drinks and take advantage of the guestlist discounts, you can enjoy some of the best EDM talent in the world for relatively little money. The crowd is very like minded and the atmosphere will make you wanna rock out to the banging sound system. If you used to rave back in the day but prefer the older, more mature club atmosphere, this place is the best of both worlds. read more
